Jason Blum couldn’t reveal details today about Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 but he brought New York Comic Con attendees the poster for the sequel to last year’s highest grossing horror movie.

The first movie opened during the actors strike, day-and-date on Peacock and defied all hurdles during last fall’s marketplace. The movie based on the hit videogame was an anomaly performing equally well in theaters and on Peacock since it was a hot fan frenzied franchise. Five Night’s Freddy‘s was Peacock‘s most-watched film or series ever in its first five days, besting previous record-holders Halloween Ends, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Bel-Air and The Best Man: The Final Chapters.

Blumhouse Productions has been one of the biggest names in the horror genre for a couple of decades now, and Deadline reports that this Halloween season they’re teaming up with AMC Theatres for a special event called BlumFest, which will bring six Blumhouse movies back to the big screen in 54 cities and 150 AMC multiplexes.

The six week event begins on September 25th and will see a different Blumhouse movie screening in AMC theatres every Wednesday through the night before Halloween. The national screening festival will run for six weeks, featuring five Blumhouse repertory films (as well as one from Atomic Monster) anchored by the 15th anniversary of Paranormal Activity September 25. Tickets go on sale today.

Every Wednesday starting September 25, Blumhouse fans can attend special screenings, earn one-time-only giveaways, and be among the first audiences to see exclusive sneak peeks at upcoming Blumhouse films, plus recorded messages from directors and talent from the festival films. All attendees will also receive a special poster giveaway commemorating the 2024 lineup.

BlumFest has found its lineup for this year’s Halloween season. It will kick off with the 2009 found footage feature Paranormal Activity, that will get a one-night only re-release.

Writer-director Oren Pel’s Paranormal Activity kicks off the fest on Sept. 25 in 150 AMC locations in 54 cities. It will be followed every Wednesday by a different Blumhouse movie, which will screen at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. local time, and include free poster giveaways and sneak peeks at upcoming projects.

Lights Out arrives Oct. 2. The feature was a breakout for Shazam! director David F. Sandberg, who wrote the film with Eric Heisserer. The film was not a Blumhouse release, but actually hails from Atomic Monster, the James Wan run-company that recently merged with Blumhouse.

Insidious: Chapter 2 comes a week later on Oct. 9. The feature reteamed Saw duo Wan and Leigh Whannell, who wrote the script, with Wan direting.

It surpasses Halloween Ends, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Bel-Air and The Best Man: The Final Chapters for the honor, according to NBCUniversal.

The company is also touting Five Nights at Freddy’s as the most-watched entertainment title across all genres since its debut and the biggest opening ever for a film on Peacock through five days.

As is typical, NBCUniversal did not release actual data to support this. The film may appear on the Nielsen streaming charts next month, depending on how well it holds up against other streaming properties in its first few weeks.

Five Nights at Freddy’s filmmaker Emma Tammi has now set the opening weekend record of $80 million for a Blumhouse film, and she’s keenly aware that her journey to this point was an unlikely one.

Tammi started out as a documentary filmmaker, tackling such subjects as endurance running in Fair Chase (2014) and the 2016 Presidential Election in the Jason Blum-produced Election Day: Lens Across America (2017). From there, the producers of Fair Chase approached her about the supernatural horror film, The Wind (2018), after seeing the way she and co-director Alex Cullen captured New Mexico in their doc. We’ve always known what creeps us out. From clowns to small tight spaces, we as an audience have been subjected to enough now that we know what people and places to stay away from. Universal and Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s movie had a Massive opening weekend, scaring up $78 million and topping the box office here in the United States.

What’s particularly impressive about this massive debut is that Five Nights at Freddy’s was also released on Peacock the same day it hit theaters, shattering the notion that day-and-date releases are bad for the box office. A venerable jump-scare of the fall film season, “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is poised to become the biggest horror movie of the year. With a box office prediction of $50 million, director Emma Tammi’s animatronic house of horrors stands to outdo “The Exorcist: Believer” and “Saw X,” which earned $26.5 million and $18.3 million during their respective openings.

“I’m taking all of these predictions with a grain of salt, only because you never know,” Tammi told IndieWire in a phone interview.

“It’s amazing to be going into this weekend leading with all this excitement and those strong projections. But at the end of the day, I think my biggest nerves are wrapped around whether or not the fan base is going to embrace this film. And I’m staying focused on that. Everything else will be gravy if it comes — just keeping fingers crossed.”

The latest film from the horror film studio Blumhouse, Five Nights at Freddy’s, proves to be not only less of a typical horror product from the studio, but also more of a family-friendly and engaging story than one might expect from the genre.

The film opens as a troubled security guard named Mike (Josh Hutcherson) is let go from his current security assignment. Soon after this he begins work at a dilapidated pizza/arcade called Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Over the course of his first night on the job, Mike notices several odd occurrences that suggest the job may not be the cake-walk assignment it was presented as. Subsequent evenings prove even more harrowing as it appears that the animatronic characters designed as entertainment in the arcade may, in fact, harbor homicidal tendencies.

Taylor Swift isn’t the “marquee character” stepping up to save theaters from a strike-caused theatrical vacuum. Freddy Fazbear, the title antagonist in the popular horror-comedy video game “Five Nights at Freddy’s” is doing his part. The Blumhouse-produced adaptation, produced for $20 million and boasting an all-audiences PG-13 rating, earned a whopping $10.3 million in Thursday preview grosses.

Even if the poorly-reviewed IP adaptation plays frontloaded (think a 20% Thursday-to-weekend split like the “Twilight Saga” sequels), either because it’s “for the fans” or because it’s concurrently available on Peacock, Universal is still looking at a $50 million-plus opening weekend. If it plays anything like a conventional, less-frontloaded film, well, a 15% Thursday-to-weekend split gives it $66 million for the weekend.

Based on a series of comically horrific (or horrifically comical) video games centered on a Chuck E. Cheese-type establishment that kills people, the film arrives in theaters just nine years after the first point-and-click survival video game.

Director Emma Tammi was facing quite a lot when bringing Five Nights at Freddy’s to the big screen with writers like Scott Cawthon and Seth Cuddeback.

Not only did they have the challenge of delivering a fresh spin on a beloved IP already adapted in multiple other mediums, they are also facing down the dreaded video game adaptation curse and the film arriving amid a small but noticeable resurgence of “stranger danger” titles (think It, The Black Phone, Barbarian and Knock at the Cabin.)

Yet, the biggest challenge for the Five Nights at Freddy’s director may have been the one thing that most horror franchises are thinking about in a completely opposite way than her film: kids. Hollywood has a long history of making scary things for little(r) audiences — think Fright Krewe, Goosebumps, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Coraline, Wendell & Wilde, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Scooby-Doo! and Are You Afraid of the Dark?...

Aside from one non-canon take on an RPG, Scott Cawthon’s Five Nights at Freddy’s series has been milking the same creepy, winning formula for nine years. In the games, players inhabit a night-shift security guard charged with keeping an eye on a gang of sentient, decaying animatronic animals, who’ve claimed residence at a derelict Chuck E. Cheese-like establishment called Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Fail at closing doors and checking cameras, among other tasks, and one of these big fuzzy lummoxes does horrible things to your face.

Emma Tammi’s Five Nights at Freddy’s takes that formula and doesn’t exactly run with it. There’s a brief assault against a gang trying to break into the pizzeria that ends in one of the film’s two memorable moments of violence. The other? A climactic moment that’s basically the finale of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser but with pizza mascots.

A film version of the videogame has been in development for nearly a decade, beginning in 2015 when Gil Kenan, who directed “Monster House” and who just directed the as-yet-untitled sequel “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” (due out next year), signed on to direct and co-write. That began a fairly tumultuous production cycle that at one point saw “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” filmmaker Chris Columbus sign on.

But now it’s finally here, with a film directed and co-written (with Seth Cuddeback and original creator Scott Cawthon) by Emma Tammi and featuring animatronic characters created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. Blumhouse, the production company behind “Paranormal Activity,” “Get Out” and more recently “M3GAN,” is overseeing the film.

In case you aren’t familiar with the game franchise created by Scott Cawthorn, Five Nights At Freddy’s is a phenomenon in the sector, having hatched nine different games to date, several spinoffs, a novel trilogy and an anthology series all for the love of Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy the Pirate, 70foot-tall animatronic creatures who are capable of violence or love depending who is in the room with them.

Hollywood has not been successful at turning video games into movies — a disappointing streak that “Five Nights at Freddy’s” fails to correct. Despite being shepherded by savvy low-budget horror producer Jason Blum, this is a rather empty and unexciting effort at attracting horror fans during Halloween season. Kids are generally smarter than we give them credit for. For the most part, they're curious, open-minded, and understand the most fundamental truth about the world far better than adults do: that life simply makes more sense through the prism of dream logic. For every children's movie that gets this right, it feels like there are a half-dozen more that fatally underestimate their own intended audience. "Five Nights at Freddy's" can safely count itself among those in the former category, thankfully, and it weaponizes this strength to deliver the year's most charming and unabashedly kid-friendly horror flick just in time for spooky season.

Director Emma Tammi clearly recognizes the appeal of adapting a property with the unique sensibilities and labyrinthine lore dictated by this film's source material, a video game franchise that can only be generously described as "idiosyncratic." Still, the basics have been streamlined enough for even the most casual viewer to grasp.

Producer Jason Blum believes what sets Five Nights at Freddy’s apart from other adaptations is “the care that was taken with the story to create something based on a beloved game.” Universal Pictures’ new featurette is dedicated to the game’s fans, and director/co-writer Emma Tammi says that every creative decision they made was with the goal of doing justice to the game and its massive fan base.

Like almost anyone else who grew up in the past 50 years, film director Emma Tammi has distinct memories of visiting a certain type of children’s entertainment restaurant. You know the kind. The place where the arcade games are plentiful, the ball pits are crowded, and the stage is full of animatronic critters who do their best to twitch on key to a prerecorded music jamboree.

There’s a universality to Tammi’s recollections about such places too. As a child, she had joyous fun playing the games, hearing the songs, and chewing on the pizza. And yet, every once in a while, she might catch a glimpse of a motorized mouse in a tuxedo, and he gave her pause.

“[I would have] so much fun and also feel an eerie presence amongst us,” Tammi says now with a laugh. “The animatronic [creature] looking sideways and then straight into your soul is a memory that stuck with me.
