Sarah Grey and Jake Manley in The Order (2019)
The Order (2024) Movie Ending Explained: Does Agent Terry Husk Find Robert Jay Matthews in the End?
Sarah Grey and Jake Manley in The Order (2019)
“The Order” (2024) is a brooding investigative thriller that puts another feather in director Justin Kurzel’s cap. After the chilling character portraits in “Nitram” and “The Snowtown Murders,” Kurzel returns with an equally harrowing depiction of evil in human beings. This time, he shifts his focus toward a White Supremacist terrorist group that was active in the 1980s. He paints the picture of a small American town mainly through the eyes of an FBI agent, who ends up in a cat-and-mouse chase with the terrorist group’s members. Although the plot essentially leads us toward its leader’s capture, it is more interested in interrogating the human tendencies that affect the usual order of any place, and how people react in such situations of change.

Spoilers Ahead

The Order (2024) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

“The Order” starring Jude Law offers a grim portrait of an FBI investigation in the 1980s to investigate a white supremacist group,...

Jude Law & Nicholas Hoult's 92% Rotten Tomatoes Crime Thriller Gets New Streaming Home
Image
The criminally underrated The Order did not gain as much attention as other titles released on the big screen in 2024. Last year provided moviegoers a number of critically acclaimed features across various genres, leaving the Justin Kurzel-directed crime thriller somewhat overshadowed. However, that doesn’t mean the film wasn’t a critical success, with a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score as of this writing. Now, the movie is bound to be introduced to a much wider audience this month. The Order — starringJude Lawand Nicholas Hoult — will be added to Hulu's extensive library starting April 18, 2025.

The crime thriller boasts an ensemble cast led by Law and Hoult, both of whom have impressive acting portfolios under their belts. Law, best known for his performance in 1999's The Talented Mr. Ripley, has continued to prove his range as an actor time and again with a range of genres, including comedy, thriller, drama, and action.

‘The Order’ Review
Image
Stars: Nicholas Hoult, Jude Law, Tye Sheridan, Marc Maron, George Tchortov, Daniel Yip, Daniel Doheny, Sebastian Pigott, Phillip Forest Lewitski | Written by Zach Baylin, Kevin Flynn, Gary Gerhardt | Directed by Justin Kurzel

Justin Kurzel’s new film The Order acts as a history lesson that remains as relevant as ever, at times too relevant, something that echoes today’s history before us. The film also acts as a sleek detective movie and a crisp action thriller, one the big screen has been missing.

The Order follows the true story of frightened communities throughout the Pacific Northwest America in 1983. Where a series of increasingly violent bank robberies, counterfeiting operations, and armoured car heists are tied to a group of dangerous white supremacists and domestic terrorists, inspired by a radical, charismatic leader (played by Nicholas Hoult). A leader that spreads his hateful, dangerous ideologies to his followers. Tasked with hunting down the...

The Order: On Demand brings Jude Law’s compelling FBI thriller home for the holidays for a Christmas Eve digital release
Image
Santa Claus won’t be the only thing coming down the chimney this Christmas Eve, as director Justin Kurzel’s FBI thriller The Order comes to On Demand. In the film, a string of violent robberies in the Pacific Northwest leads a veteran FBI agent into a domestic terrorist plot to overthrow the federal government. Nothing says Christmas like violence and corruption! Who’s bringing the spiked eggnog?

Here’s the official synopsis for The Order:

“For over a year, a series of bold daylight bank robberies and armored car heists leaves law enforcement baffled and the public panicked throughout the Pacific Northwest. As the attacks become increasingly violent, FBI agent Terry Husk (Jude Law) becomes convinced that the robberies are the work of a domestic terrorist gang that plans to use the loot to finance an armed uprising against the U.S. government.

Based on a true story, The Order...

Tye Sheridan Explains 'The Order' and Its Relevant Truth
Image
Tye Sheridan might play a young, somewhat innocent character in the neo-Nazi-hunting thriller The Order, but he has deep wisdom about what the story truly means. "I don't think you can fix any problem without understanding what the root cause is," Sheridan told MovieWeb in a recent interview. The Order is based on a non-fiction book, The Silent Brotherhood, which details the story of an FBI agent who takes down a white supremacist terrorist group in the Pacific Northwest. This is a true story from 1983, but audiences and filmmakers alike can't help but see a lot of recent history in it. Director Justin Kurzel even explained how the January 6 storming of the US Capitol was a source of inspiration.

Tye Sheridan, so excellent in The Card Counter and The Mountain, did plenty of research for his role, both in the original text the film is based on and the text...

The Order Review: Jude Law & Nicholas Hoult Explore The Evils Of Hatred In Gripping Crime Thriller
Image
This review was originally published on August 31, 2024, as a part of our Venice Film Festival coverage.

The Order is about hate, though not quite in the way you'd expect. It seems an obvious theme, given the story follows a white supremacist terrorist cell and the FBI's effort to stop them, and some space is given to the hateful doctrine they live by. But the movie is less interested in hate ideologically as it is in the feeling. And director Justin Kurzel is less interested in explaining that feeling than he is in observing it and its effects. Surround that goal with across-the-board quality, and you have a consistently tense crime thriller that leaves a lasting mark.

A lone FBI agent, stationed in a small Idaho town, uncovers a disturbing connection between a series of violent bank robberies and a white supremacist group known as The Order. As the investigation deepens,...

Jude Law's Neo-Nazi Crime Thriller Was Inspired by January 6
Image
Jude Law's newest film may technically be a period piece loosely based on a true story from the past, but its resonance feels eerily prescient for the present, as well. And that may not be totally coincidental, as The Order's director Justin Kurzel recently revealed how the January 6 insurrection inspired the Neo-Nazi crime thriller.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kurzel broke down how the visuals from the day showed him just how relevant the story he was telling was to modern times. As Kurzel put it, "There were just so many similarities to what was going on within this incredible script Zach had written that I just found it so compelling and wanted to find a way into it that I felt could be a wonderful first American film."

He added, "I was really surprised that I was reading a period piece that was speaking so...

Jude Law Takes on Neo-Nazi Terrorists in The Order Trailer
Image
Based on true events in the 1980's The Order stars Jude Law as FBI agent Terry Husk investigating a series of car heists and bank robberies. He soon discovers that the crimes are the work of a Neo-Nazi terrorist group, fronted by Bob Mathews (Nicholas Hoult), looking to fund their uprising against the US Government.

Set to release in US cinemas on July 6, Justin Kurzel's crime thriller received a 7-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival. Early reviews put the film at an 86% Rotten Tomatoes score, with critics largely describing the film as a compelling and intelligent docudrama. In a newly released trailer, suspicions grow about Husk after white supremacist fliers begin to appear around Washington.

Jude Law dons a think mustache and enters a deadly cat-and-mouse game with neo-Nazis in the first trailer for the critically acclaimed The Order (2024), which promises to be one of the best movies of the year. The crime thriller is based on a chilling true story and takes inspiration from the 1989 non-fiction book The Silent Brotherhood by Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt. The movie made its debut at the Venice International Film Festival where it received a seven-minute standing ovation and praise for Law and director Justin Kurzel. Jude Law Crime Thriller The Order Promises to Be One of the Best of the Year
Image
Jude Law's latest film, The Order, received a seven-minute standing ovation at the Venice International Film Festival and promises to be one of the best movies of the year. While much of the attention went to the film's leading man, Law's co-stars and director also enjoyed the celebration-like reception of the crime thriller, which is based on a true story. The Order is director Justin Kurzel's latest drama and stars Law alongside Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Sebastian Pigott, Jurnee Smollett, Huxley Fisher, and Marc Maron, among others.

Per a report from the event via Variety, the premiere in Venice resonated with the audience, who cheered for the director and cast for seven whole minutes (some reports put the number as high as eight), during a standing ovation that would likely have lasted longer if the cast and crew hadn't exited the theater. Other films that received standing ovations...

Justin Kurzel’s domestic terrorism thriller, The Order, starring Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, and Tye Sheridan, lands at Vertical
Image
Vertical is getting ahead of the crowds as this year’s Cannes market starts wheeling and dealing for Hollywood’s hottest projects and properties. The studio acquired the U.S. rights from AGC Studios to The Order, with Justin Kurzel in the director’s chair. Based on Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt’s novel The Silent Brotherhood, The Order stars Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult, and Tye Sheridan.

Here’s a synopsis of Flynn and Gerhardt’s novel courtesy of Library Journal:

Two courageous investigative journalists have created an insider’s account of the “silent brotherhood,” the anti-Jewish, white supremacist underground that, with the justification of some perversely interpreted Christian teachings, conducts an all-out race war. The movement has gathered a group of superpatriots, zealots, malcontents, as well as, rather disturbingly, a large majority of ordinary people. These followers see the underground’s survivalist creed as the way whites can protect...

Justin Kurzel’s True Crime Thriller ‘The Order’ Starring Jude Law, Nicholas Hoult & Tye Sheridan Acquired By Vertical
Image
Exclusive: Vertical has acquired U.S. rights from AGC Studios to The Order, a dramatic thriller directed by Australia’s Justin Kurzel (Macbeth), on which we were first to report. Written by Oscar and BAFTA nominee Zach Baylin (King Richard), the film adapts Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt’s book The Silent Brotherhood, chronicling the escalating crimes of the titular white supremacist domestic terror group. It’s set in 1983, when a series of increasingly violent bank robberies, counterfeiting operations, and armored car heists frightened communities throughout the Pacific Northwest. As baffled law enforcement agents scrambled for answers, a lone FBI agent (Law), stationed in the sleepy, picturesque town of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, came to believe...

The 10 Most Terrifying Traps In The Saw Franchise, Ranked
Image
You can't keep a good Jigsaw Killer down. Even though the artist formerly known as John Kramer (Tobin Bell) first showed up onscreen as a man with terminal cancer, and subsequently died in "Saw III," we're now nine sequels deep, and only one of them ("Spiral: From the Book of Saw") didn't include him in the cast somehow. Mostly this boils down to an ever-more-elaborate series of flashbacks, accomplices, copycats, and detailed instructions and recordings made for future deathtraps.

All of Jigsaw's traps are the last place you'd want to be, but they vary a lot in difficulty level. Some simply require following his instructions exactly while others involve either forgiving or murdering someone else. Still more depend on cooperation, and most of them deliver a twisted form of therapy, with the patient urged to get over their baggage in the next 30 seconds or so if they want to live.

Fantasia Review: ‘Jade’s Asylum’ is a Nuanced Descent into Terror
We don’t get our bearings as far as locale and characters go until a little ways into Alexandre Carrière’s Jade’s Asylum. While we’ve already met Jade (Morgan Kohan) and her boyfriend Toby (Kjartan Hewitt) in the midst of a fight wherein he blames his infidelity on her need for a therapist (if his infidelity can be believed along with anything that occurs on-screen), it’s two police officers engaged in an illicit affair (Mauricio Morales’ Alvares and Diana Marcela Aguilar Chavez’s Vasquez) who fill us in on their surroundings with palpable disdain. They don’t like that these rowdy Americans have come to Costa Rica to throw money around and build a party mansion for drugs and women away from prying eyes because they know only bad things can result.

You have to figure their idea of a “worst case” scenario is a drunken overdose...

‘Anon’ Review
Stars: Clive Owen, Amanda Seyfried, Colm Feore, Sonya Walger, Mark O’Brien, Joe Pingue, Iddo Goldberg, Sebastian Pigott, Rachel Roberts, Ethan Tavares, Marco Grazzini, Conrad Coates | Written and Directed by Andrew Niccol

Writer-director Andrew Niccol has made a career out of depicting tech-enhanced dystopias, whether it’s his 1997 debut Gattaca (genetic engineering), his script for The Truman Show (reality TV taken to extremes) or 2002′s S1m0ne, which now seems weirdly prescient in its anxiety over digitally augmented reality. His latest film, sci-fi murder mystery Anon, finds Niccol on familiar ground when it comes to tech-based paranoia, but the plot falls short in comparison to the imaginative world building.

Set in an all-too-believable future, the film stars Clive Owen as world-weary detective Sal Frieland, whose job has been rendered ridiculously easy because all crimes are almost instantly solvable, thanks to an implant called the eye that uploads every citizen...

One More Time: Netflix's Us Trailer for Augmented Reality Film 'Anon'
"Who can hack a human being?" One more trailer for the indie sci-fi film Anon, written and directed by sci-fi storyteller Andrew Niccol. We posted another trailer earlier this year, and a new international trailer this week already. This new Us trailer from Netflix presents the story entirely differently - about hackers and hacking our augmented reality, and how one of them is getting away with murders by erasing memories. Clive Owen plays a cop investigating a series of unsolved murders, who meets a mysterious hacker woman known as "The Girl" - Amanda Seyfried. This also stars Colm Feore, Sonya Walger, Mark O'Brien, Joe Pingue, Iddo Goldberg, and Sebastian Pigott. This actually looks good, I'm planning to watch once it's available - starting in early May on Netflix. Here's the official Us trailer (+ new Us poster) for Andrew Niccol's Anon, direct from Netflix's YouTube: You can still watch the...

New International Trailer for Andrew Niccol's 'Anon' with Clive Owen
"We can't control what we can't see." Another new international trailer has debuted for the indie sci-fi film Anon, written and directed by sci-fi storyteller Andrew Niccol. We posted another trailer earlier this year, and it still looks very intriguing. The film is about a near-future where there is no privacy or anonymity, where even private memories are recorded in an effort to cut down on crime. Clive Owen plays a cop investigating a series of unsolved murders, who meets a hacker woman known as "The Girl", played by Amanda Seyfried. She has no identity, no history and no record. Also starring Colm Feore, Sonya Walger, Mark O'Brien, Joe Pingue, Iddo Goldberg, and Sebastian Pigott. I'm usually interested in whatever Niccol makes, especially if it's full-on sci-fi, and I'm fascinated by this. That digitized filmmaking style with augmented reality Pov is crazy cool. Check this out. Here's a second international...

First Full Trailer for Andrew Niccol's Sci-Fi Technology Thriller 'Anon'
"Anonymity is the enemy." A trailer has launched from Greece for the new sci-fi film Anon, the latest from one of my favorite sci-fi filmmakers - Andrew Niccol, who last made The Host and Good Kill. What he learns from her changes everything. Also starring Colm Feore, Sonya Walger, Mark O'Brien, Joe Pingue, Iddo Goldberg, and Sebastian Pigott. Why does Seyfried look so like anyone but herself? This seems to be a slick sci-fi neo-noir. I'm always curious about Niccol's films, will be watching it. Here's the first international trailer for Andrew Niccol's Anon,...

Natalie Krill and Erika Linder in Below Her Mouth (2016)
‘Below Her Mouth’ Is What Lesbian Porn Would Look Like If It Were Actually Made By Lesbians — Review
Natalie Krill and Erika Linder in Below Her Mouth (2016)
There is no scissoring in “Below Her Mouth.” That is about the only position missing from this 90-minute sex movie, which feels like an attempt to singlehandedly correct every misrepresentation of lesbian sex ever put onscreen. Many straight male directors have selflessly tackled the trope, including Park Chan-wook with “The Handmaiden” and Abdellatif Kechiche with “Blue is the Warmest Color.” While those films have artistic merit on their side, each feature laughably acrobatic scissoring positions, which no one should attempt at home, and could only have been imagined by someone who has never actually had lesbian sex.

In “Below Her Mouth,” director April Mullen (“Dead Before Dawn”) and her all-female production crew film every lesbian sex position under the sun, almost as if they had tasked themselves with delivering a primer to all the curious people out there.

Below Her Mouth movie review: not that there’s anything wrong with that
MaryAnn’s quick take… Lesbian and not-quite-sure-if-she’s-a-lesbian have a weekend fling. Sometimes unintentionally hilarious, this is little more than soft-core porn. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for stories about women

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Construction worker Dallas (Erika Linder, who is famous, apparently, as an androgynous supermodel) is definitely a lesbian. Fashion editor Jasmine (Natalie Krill) is trying to be straight, or something; she’s engaged to Rile (Sebastian Pigott), which isn’t even a name but which certainly describes she does to him when she has a weekend fling with Dallas while he is off on a business trip. “Try to take some time for yourself this weekend,” her fiancé tells her over the phone, so she cheats on him. With a woman. The unintentionally hilarious scene that intercuts Dallas is doing a roofing...

Emma Watson’s The Circle Ends The Lame Spring Movie Season -- The Weekend Warrior
Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.

Even Emma Watson and Tom Hanks May Not Be Enough to Make a Mark As April Ends

The last weekend of April, and the “slower” spring movie season is ending this weekend, leading directly into the start of the lucrative summer box office next week. As has been the case in past years, the last couple weekends in April see a couple movies hoping to bring in any amount of money before the first big summer blockbuster, and other movies that will steal away their theaters. Last weekend was pretty sad, but hopefully a few of this weekend’s movies will fare better.

The movie that stands the best chance at finding an audience this weekend is the tech industry thriller The Circle...

Passion Ensues in Trailer for Romantic Drama ‘Below Her Mouth’
A steamy trailer has arrived for Below Her Mouth, the latest drama from actor-turned-director April Mullen. Penned by Stephanie Fabrizi, the film follows Jasmine (Natalie Krill), a successful fashion editor who has a stable relationship until she meets Dallas (Erika Linder) at a club. Though she rejects Dallas’ dogged confidence, she cannot seem to shake the surprise she has been struck by. Soon, she gives in to her baser instincts and the two set off on an affair that causes questions to arise in both their lives.

Judging from this trailer, Below Her Mouth looks to be intimately shot, with striking lighting and lush mise en scéne. The fact that only women wrote and directed the film assures that its focus on female pleasure is rid of the male gaze, a welcome change from the fetishization of lesbianism that is often depicted in Hollywood. Ahead of a release next month,...

Tobin Bell in Saw 3D (2010)
Saw 8 Spoilers Tease the Return of a Surprise Character
Tobin Bell in Saw 3D (2010)
Last month, we reported that production has started on Saw: Legacy, with the first set photo that revealed someone had dug up the grave of John Kramer, a.k.a. Jigsaw. Unfortunately, no cast members have been confirmed yet, or even spotted on the set. But today we have new details that claim Jigsaw will in fact be back, with Tobin Bell reportedly involved in a scene with another returning character, Jon Cor's Ryan from Saw 3D. None of these details have been confirmed at this time.

Bloody-Disgusting's source reports that one of the traps in this film will include "some spike strips and motorcycles." As for Jigsaw's return, we don't know how he will be brought back from the dead, but after the photo surfaced of his grave being dug up, it's possible that he is somehow revived to continue his quest to get people to appreciate the life they have.

‘Below Her Mouth’ Exclusive Trailer: Two Women Embark On A Sudden And Steamy Romance
Natalie Krill and Erika Linder in Below Her Mouth (2016)
An unexpected romance can feel like a bolt of lightning, a powerful experience that must be felt to be truly understood. April Mullen’s latest film “Below Her Mouth” captures that feeling in its story of two women who suddenly and passionately fall in love.

Successful fashion editor Jasmine (Natalie Krill) lives with her fiancé, Rile (Sebastian Pigott), but one night out in the city, she meets Dallas (Erika Linder, in her film debut), a roofer recently out of a relationship. Jasmine is surprised when Dallas confidently hits on her. Though she turns her down, Jasmine can’t get Dallas out of her head, and in a manner of days, the two women embark on a steamy affair. Their relationship feels like a fantasy away from Jasmine’s plans with Rile, but reality soon rears its ugly head, and Jasmine is forced confront the profound changes their romance has brought into her life.

First Trailer For ‘Two Lovers and a Bear’ Starring Tatiana Maslany and Dane DeHaan
After a promising initial line-up, the Toronto International Film Festival has delivered more titles with their full Canadian slate. Among the line-up is Xavier Dolan‘s It’s Only the End of the World, Bruce MacDonald‘s new feature Weirdos, Deepa Mehta‘s Anatomy of Violence, as well as Two Lovers and a Bear, starring Tatiana Maslany and Dane DeHaan, which we have the first trailer for today.

We said in our review from Cannes, “Kim Nguyen’s Two Lovers and a Bear is a film that suffers from a bit of an identity crisis. Like an indie playlist stuck on constant shuffle, unapologetically reveling in a sort of manic unclassifiable genre. This isn’t always necessarily a bad thing, but, for some reason, Nguyen’s scattershot tonal shifts — which hop between a romance on the rocks; a self-serious study of grieving; and a surreal buddy comedy — can prove quite jarring.

Madeleine Stowe and Emily VanCamp in Revenge (2011)
Revenge Recap: Relative Insanity
Madeleine Stowe and Emily VanCamp in Revenge (2011)
Jack Porter: Good father, great eye candy, terrible policeman.

The Hamptons’ second pluckiest rookie — Ben is obviously No. 1 — thought he was saving the day on Sunday’s Revenge, anonymously submitting the flash drive containing Malcolm Black’s criminal exploits to the police, but it turns out he only made things worse. Much worse.

Malcolm was released due to “lack of evidence,” which further fueled his rage — rage that he then directed towards Emily, whom he now knows to be Amanda Clarke. Two tranquilizer shots brought Em and Victoria to their knees, while a menacing Malcolm stood over them. (“Night night” has never sounded so terrifying.

Revenge Sneak Peek: Meet Louise's Brother — and Nolan's Next Boyfriend?
Madeleine Stowe and Emily VanCamp in Revenge (2011)

New photos from Sunday’s episode showcase the arrival of Sebastian Pigott (Ascension, Being Erica) as Lyman, the golden child of the Ellis family. Though, honestly, how could you not be the golden child when Louise is your sister?

(Side note: Not to be presumptuous, but given their similar attire, could Louise’s brother possibly be a match for Nolan? As if their friendship could get any weirder…)

But because dinner parties aren’t allowed...
