Some very good news over the long-distance relay for fans of alt-history sci-fi series For All Mankind. Apple TV+ has decided to not only renew the main show for a fifth season, but also commission a new spin-off sibling, Star City, which will explore the space race story from the Russian side of events.
Season Four of For All Mankind reached 2003, and the well-established Mars base on Happy Valley became a hotbed of blue-collar dissent and authority crackdowns. And asteroid mining became a hot-button issues, with disagreements over where this rich new source of minerals and metals should be positioned to maximize their use.
The fifth season will see another time jump, meaning we're likely to say goodbye to veteran characters such as those played by Joel Kinnaman and Krys Marshall.
Yet the new spin-off offers the chance to see the likes of NASA-chief-turned-defector Margo Madison (Wrenn Schmidt) again...

Apple TV+ isn’t done exploring the depths of space.
The streamer has renewed its drama series For All Mankind for Season 5. Additionally, Apple TV+ has given the green light to a spinoff series titled Star City, also from creators Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi.
Apple is billing Star City is “a propulsive paranoid thriller” which will explore a key moment in the alt-history retelling of the space race — when the Soviet Union became the first nation to put a man on the moon. But this time, it will explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers, and the intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space program, and the risks they all took to propel humanity forward.
“Our fascination with the Soviet space program has grown with every season of For All Mankind,” Wolpert and Nedivi said in a statement.

While many of our favorite sci-fi shows seem to either be on hold or suddenly canceled, Apple TV+’s For All Mankind shows no sign of stopping. The alternate history show is blasting off with its fourth season on the streamer this November and, as always, the premiere is the most exciting part of the series’ return for those who are curious to see where all the characters have ended up after the traditional massive time jump.
The season four opening montage sets the stage for a new era, and clears away anything surplus to requirements. At what point did "For All Mankind" truly come into its own? Maybe it was as early as its resounding debut season, which flipped one of the most pivotal events in human history on its head — the United States beating the Soviet Union to the moon — with an alternate-history twist where Russia had won the space race and reinvigorated the Cold War. Then again, season 2 was the one to use this fascinating jumping-off point to achieve even greater heights, melding human conflicts and space nerdery into one ambitious storyline about the series of small, personal choices made in narrowly avoiding the onset of World War III in the 1980s. When season 3 took the action all the way to Mars another decade later with much of the original cast still involved, it was easy to imagine the whole enterprise coming apart at the seams. Instead, the series embraced its own flawed (but three-dimensional) characters,...

“For All Mankind” Season 4 is nearly here. And a trailer that just played on the first day of New York Comic Con (where they’re also screening the first episode of the new season) gives us our first taste of what’s to come. Watch it above.
If you’ve never seen “For All Mankind” — created by Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi — it’s an alternate history tale of the space race. The first season was set during the race to the moon, with America training a group of female astronauts and Russia getting there first.
Each subsequent season has moved further away from actual history while still incorporating details from real life. And, crucially, each season is set a decade after the previous season, meaning that old-age makeup technology is constantly being put to the test. (Sometimes it works better than others.)

Are you a science nerd who's become disheartened by our collective inability as a species to work together towards a common goal, to put ego and wealth and politics aside, and simply explore the cosmos for the betterment of our species? If you haven't been following along already, allow me to point you in the direction of "For All Mankind." I should clarify, this isn't the show to watch if you're looking for an escape from all the cynicism we've been seeing in our news headlines for the better part of the 21st Century. Rather, the Apple TV+ series shines a direct light on all our missteps through an alternate-history lens -- one in which the Russians won the space race by landing a man on the moon back in the 1960s, kicking off an even more intense game of one-upmanship between the world's superpowers locked in an eternal Cold War.

For All Mankind Season 3 threw the show’s alternate history space race into overdrive — what was once a contest between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. expanded to include a new competitor. Helios was much more than a would-be contender; until some fancy maneuvering on Dani Poole’s (Krys Marshall) part and Ed Baldwin’s (Joel Kinnaman) second thoughts, it looked like the privately owned space exploration company could beat NASA and Russian cosmonauts to Mars.
But while NASA may have sort of won the day, and Ed and his daughter Kelly (Cynthy Wu) established a base along with Dani’s team, tragedy and subterfuge loomed around the corner. Series creators Ronald D. From “Saved!” to “The Miseducation of Cameron Post,” Sundance movies tend to paint fundamentalist Christians as severe, cult-like zealots, hellbent on brainwashing the next generation. While such portrayals can certainly be cathartic for those scarred by conservative upbringings, it’s a refreshing change to see this milieu treated with the level of nuance that Laurel Parmet brings to “The Starling Girl.”
Set in a small Kentucky town where morality is strictly enforced, Parmet’s promising, evenhanded debut focuses on a religious teen (“Little Women” star Eliza Scanlen) who’s never had reason to question her faith, until a crush on her handsome youth pastor (Lewis Pullman) awakens her sexuality and scandalizes the community. For the adults in this repressive rural enclave, organized religion seems to provide the discipline and structure they seek. But for 17-year-old Jem Starling, their values are starting feel like a straitjacket.

Writer-director Laurel Parmet’s The Starling Girl quickly draws us into the remote Kentucky community at its center, a place small enough that everyone knows everyone else. Wide-open spaces stretch out from it in all directions and keep the rest of the world at bay. Most importantly, it’s a place where all of life revolves around the church.
In this stifling place, every single move a person makes doesn’t escape Old Testament judgment. One early scene even shows us a teenager being forced to confess to the sin of watching pornography in front of the entire congregation so that they might forgive him.
Within this milieu, we meet 17-year-old Jem (Eliza Scanlen). At home, she’s forced to play the role of doting daughter, working tirelessly to care for her younger siblings. Her mother, Heidi (Wrenn Schmidt), watches her every move like a hawk, her face fixed in...

"I want a heart full of love. I want it to fill me to the brim." Bleecker Street Films has revealed an official US trailer for The Starling Girl, an acclaimed indie film that first premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The film marks the feature debut of the talented filmmaker Laurel Parmet, also featuring the first original film score by Ben Schneider of the band Lord Huron. 17-year-old Jem Starling struggles with her place within her Christian fundamentalist community. But everything changes when her magnetic youth pastor Owen returns to their church. Starring Eliza Scanlen as Jem Starling, Lewis Pullman, Wrenn Schmidt, Austin Abrams, and Jimmi Simpson. Reviews describe the film as "authentic and subtle; troubling and triumphant", in an "examination of the hypocritical fundamentalist Christian institution" and a teen girl's "intense journey of self-discovery." Sexuality and sin are closely aligned in writer-director Laurel Parmet’s coming-of-age drama “The Starling Girl,” set in a fundamentalist Christian community.
Eliza Scanlen stars as 17-year-old Jem Starling who develops a crush, and subsequently inappropriate relationship, with a new youth pastor. Per the official synopsis, 17-year-old Jem Starling (Scanlen) struggles to define her place within her fundamentalist Christian community in rural Kentucky. Even her greatest joy of dancing with the church group is tempered by worry that her actions are sinful and she is caught between a burgeoning awareness of her own sexuality and her religious devotion. With the return of Owen (Lewis Pullman), an enigmatic youth pastor, Jem soon finds herself attracted to his worldliness and charm. Slowly, he draws her into a dangerous relationship that could upend their entire community.
Wrenn Schmidt, Austin Abrams, and Jimmi Simpson also star.

Two years ago, Accused Season 1 Episode 9 might have seemed dystopian. Less than a year after the Supreme Court dismantled protections afforded women with Roe vs. Wade, effectively transferring the matter to the states, it's our reality.
"Jack's Story" found Jack at the heart of a terrible situation in which one of his students desperately wanted to terminate her pregnancy but without a tenable route to do it.
Enter Jack, the teacher with a heart of gold, who made her problem his problem, everyone else be damned. It caused him much more than he bargained, but he didn't lose the women he loved, Britney, played by For All Mankind's Wrenn Schmidt.
I tuned into this episode just minutes after reading that the governor of Wyoming was looking to ban the morning-after pill, and as many southern states are considering the death penalty for women seeking abortion services.
It creates a very uneasy feeling,...

Accused has done it again. The producers have released another polarizing episode with the potential to engage and divide viewers.
This episode touches on the controversial overturning of Roe V. Wade and how access to safe abortions is not available in many areas.
Accused Season 1 Episode 9 was directed by Emmy Award-winner Michael Chiklis, who himself starred in the show's Series premiere. The show featured a host of talented actors and starred Jason Ritter, who has shown himself to be an accomplished and dynamic actor.
Jason Ritter's Jack was selfless yet lacked maturity and good judgment. He is the definition of "heart was in the right place," but I don't know where his head was.
He made many ill-conceived and illegal moves to protect and support a student. His movements made no sense because, as a mandated reporter, he has training on how to handle these situations.
Although Clara was manipulative in her own right,...
