It could be argued that “Savage State” ultimately seems worse than it really is only because the opening scenes of this French-Canadian-produced period drama are so deceptively promising. But, really, writer-director David Perrault (“Our Heroes Died Tonight”) has no one to blame but himself. Despite any good will (or at least simple curiosity) he might generate during his intriguingly offbeat first-act set-up, he actively encourages his visually splendid but dramatically fuzzy film to gradually devolve into a gonzo mashup of gothic melodrama, Wild West survival story, and voodoo-flavored supernaturalism, with a side order of slasher-movie tropes and a sprinkling of kinky sex insinuations.
“Savage State” begins by noting that, as early as 1861, Emperor Napoleon III warned “French settlers on the new continent” to maintain “strict neutrality” during the American Civil War. But by December 1863, Edmond (Bruno Todeschini) — paterfamilias of a well-to-do French family situated in St. Charles County, Mo. — recognizes...

"He's coming with me, Esther..." "He doesn't want you anymore." Samuel Goldwyn Films has released an official trailer for a French indie drama set in America's past titled Savage State, originally L'état Sauvage in French. When the American Civil War breaks out, a family of french settlers must abandon their Missouri home to flee and go back to Paris. They're escorted by a former mercenary whose troubled past soon catches up with him. Sounds like an interesting parable about how bad it is in America and how it's time to get out. Although the politics of this film seem a bit sketchy. Savage State stars Alice Isaaz, Kevin Janssens, Déborah François, Bruno Todeschini, Constance Dollé, Abidou, Maryne Bertieaux, and Kate Moran. This looks gorgeously shot, and so very French, with lots of beautiful women and a few rugged men. Here's the official US trailer (+ posters) for David Perrault's Savage State,...

David Perrault's English-French western Savage State was picked up by Samuel Goldwyn Films just before the holidays and the distributor is moving quickly to get it into your eyeballs On Demand and Digital on Friday, January 29th. Today the official trailer and poster were released. You find them and a collection of stills down below. While the poster itself is completely serviceble you really ought to take a moment and check out the trailer. Filmed here in Canada and over in France and Belgium the film is far prettier than the poster sells it. I'll admit that when I received the press release I was going to give it a pass because the key art screams bargain bin. However, watch the trailer and we...

A mercenary walks into the den of a woman and her masked crew. They’re hoping to exchange French luxuries for diamonds, but the mercenary scams them. A classic fight with the sparks of gunpowder ensues, delivering the masculine toughness that encompasses most of the western genre. But the scene quickly shifts to a grand house where women outnumber men five to one. These characters are living and witnessing the savage state of a country that has resulted in a devastating civil war. Unlike most civil war films, the perspective here in writer-director David Perrault’s film is that of French settlers. But along with this unique viewpoint, Savage State can be added to the small canon of female westerns. Containing the same grit and violence as any film set on the American frontier, but it's one that’s wholeheartedly and unabashedly feminine.
It’s Missouri in 1863, home to a family of French settlers.

The first trailer for David Perrault’s debut feature Our Heroes Died Tonight (Nos heros sont morts ce soir) has been released. The film, which is was selection of the Critic’s Week sidebar in Cannes this year, is a crime noir set in the world of masked wrestling in the 1960s. As a huge fan of both wrestling and film noir, I’m looking forward to watching this. THR calls it , “a minimalist, semi-experimental throwback to early 60s filmmaking, employing stark black-and-white imagery to portray two downbeat wrestlers whose battles are overshadowed by traumas from the Algerian war”.
Synopsis: France in the early 60s. Simon, a wrestler, wears a white mask. In the ring, he is known as “The Specter”. He suggests to his friend Victor who has just returned from combat to be his adversary in the ring and wear a black mask, and be known as “The...

Back in 1960's France, masked wrestling was not a kitsch, novelty sport with a cult following -- it was serious business. According to the accepted narrative, it was not only a spectacle of brutality, but a powerful assertion of good triumphing over evil. In each match, a white-masked wrestler fought it out with a black-masked one, and ultimately emerged victorious. I don't think I need to elaborate on the symbolism here. And so, using this profession, with clear-cut versions of good and bad, as a backdrop for a film-noir, a genre which thrives on blurring the lines between the two opposing forces, is the first of many clever, inspired decisions director David Perrault makes in his film Our Heroes Are Dead Tonight (Nos Héros Sont...

First film in 20 years from Alejandro Jodorowsky, as Clio Barnard and Paul Wright fly flag for Britain
The line-up of this year's Cannes film festival is now complete after the announcement of the Directors' Fortnight and Critics' Week selections.
The Director's Fortnight has added 20 titles to its already-announced opener, The Congress, from Ari "Waltz With Bashir" Folman, a part-animated adaptation of Stanislaw "Solaris" Lem's sci-fi novel The Futurological Congress.
Highlights include La Danza de la Realidad, the first film for more than two decades from cult Chilean director Alejandro Jodorowsky (best known for El Topo), and a complementary documentary, Jodorowsky's Dune, about the director's disastrous attempt to film Frank Herbert's giant novel. Two more Chilean directors, Sebastian Silva, with his Sundance hit Magic Magic, starring Michael Cera, and Marcela Said with The Summer of the Flying Fish, have had films selected alongside.

I have been adding titles that will play the 2013 Cannes Film Festival to the database periodically since they were first announced last week as well as updating the complete line-up as more and more titles have been added. Last week it was announced Ari Folman's The Congress would serve as the opening night film for the Directors' Fortnight selection and today the fest organizers announced the complete Critics' Week (Semaine de la Critique) line-up, which will open on May 16 with Katell Quillevere's Suzanne and a selection largely made up of names I'm not personally familiar with. The most notable name is Sundance stand-out Ain't Them Bodies Saints from director David Lowery. Personally I expected this film to be among the Un Certain Regard selection after the love it received at Sundance, but its inclusion is a welcome one as Rooney Mara's performance is one that's been much talked...

This morning the official 2013 Cannes Film Festival line-up was announced from Paris, France. The committee saw 1,858 films submitted this year and while additional titles will continue to be announced, this morning we got the full Competition and Un Certain Regard lineup and it looks amazing so far. Among the films announced In Competition so far, many were expected including Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives, Steven Soderbergh's Behind the Candelabra, Roman Polanski's Venus in Fur, Asghar Farhadi's The Past and Joel and Ethan Coen's Inside Llewyn Davis. Additionally James Gray's once titled Lowlife starring Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner will play, but under the name The Immigrant and Takashi Miike's cop thriller Wara No Tate (Straw Shield) has also made the competition list. However, the biggest "surprise" is the inclusion of Alexander Payne's black-and-white film Nebraska, which is sure to be a big attention getter,...
