Beyond the Light Barrier, directed by Uga Carlini, is a conglomeration of several testimonies and points of view of people around Elizabeth Klarer, a renowned meteorologist in South Africa. The film is an adaptation of the book Beyond the Light Barrier by Elizabeth which is a part of her autobiography. In the book, she explains how she meets an alien, Akon, falls in love, and gets impregnated to have a child in outer space. There are mixed testimonies of people, some declaring her story to be a hoax while others are staunch believers of the story. The film showcases the interviews with the family and friends of Elizabeth and other experts in the field. Is the story of Elizabeth Klarer true, or is it just an act to grab the attention of a wide audience to convey something greater? We are sure to find that out through further discussions.

Early in McCurry: The Pursuit of Color, renowned photographer Steve McCurry bemoans that the world is becoming an endless airport terminal, devoid of color and humanity. This is certainly one way to experience New York City, where McCurry hangs his hat between journeys but never really lives. Known for his iconic “Afghan Girl” image, McCurry views himself not as a photojournalist (he’s been a freelancer for most of his career) but as a storyteller who defends himself from the criticism that he too often digitally manipulates his images.

Denis Delestrac’s portrait feels a bit unfocused, bouncing between various chapters of McCurry’s life, what his colleagues and family have to say about him, and his present work as he sets off to create a book that explores the human species. Maybe we know his name, maybe we know the ‘Afghan Girl,’ but not much more,” Denis Delestrac told Variety, ahead of the Doc NYC world premiere of “McCurry: The Pursuit of Color.” In his new documentary, the award-winning French filmmaker uncovers new aspects of the photographer’s biography by intertwining archive footage, photographs, observational sequences and some interview excerpts featuring McCurry himself as well as his relatives, friends and colleagues.

Exclusive: London-based doc specialist Dogwoof, which has a pipeline deal with Nat Geo, is expanding further into production and financing as it eyes bigger plays in an increasingly crowded and lucrative factual market.

The film and TV distribution company, a regular at major European film and TV markets, has had a banner year with Oscar-winner Free Solo and Apollo 11 returning strong grosses at the UK box office, taking $2.7m and $1.8m, respectively.

The firm’s sales wing has also done good recent business on the likes of Cunningham, which went to Magnolia Pictures, and Maiden, which sold to Sony Pictures Classics.

Sheffield Doc/Fest (June 10-15) has unveiled the programme for its 23rd edition, including 160 feature and short documentaries, an alternate realities line-up and a series of on-stage interviews and debates with major filmmakers and industry figures.

As previously announced, Michael Moore’s Where To Invade Next will open the festival with the Us documentarian in attendance at Doc/Fest for the first time since 1998.

The UK premiere and Q&A will be live streamed to 114 cinemas across the UK through distributor Dogwoof. It marks the second time Doc/Fest has streamed its opening, following Pulp: A Film About Life, Death & Supermarkets in 2014.

There are a total of 27 world premieres, 15 international, 19 European and 52 UK premieres with documentaries from 49 countries including Mexico, Cuba, China and Peru.

French genre specialist WTFilms has picked up sales on documentary La Bare, which goes behind the scenes at the famous male stripper club La Bare in Dallas, as part of a move into non-fiction.

WTFilms co-founders Dimitri Stephanides and Gregory Chamet say the move is a natural one for their Paris-based company, which has built up a strong reputation for its genre-based fiction slate in recent years.

“We love genre but want to tackle every aspect of its wide range”, said Stephanides

“Great films like Jodorowsky’s Dune and Room 237 have inspired us. Our name means we want to sell intense, rock ’n’ roll movies, and that is valid for documentaries as well.”
