It just premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival in their "Series" section, and debuts streaming in Denmark (more countries later) in October. In a not-too-distant future, Denmark faces total evacuation due to rising water levels (climate change is definitely going to ruin everything whether we like it or not). Families Like Ours, the debut TV drama from Thomas Vinterberg, has begun principal photography as well as formally announcing its cast, with several stars of his Oscar and BAFTA winning feature Another Round set to appear.

Exclusive: Another Round creator Thomas Vinterberg’s debut TV project has set cast and commenced principal photography.

Canal+ and TV2 Denmark’s six-parter, which first emerged two years ago and reunites Vinterberg with Lars Von Trier’s Another Round producer Zentropa and co-producer/distributor Studiocanal, is shooting on location in Copenhagen, Sweden, the Czech Republic, France and Romania.

The beguiling, intoxicating and sometimes dangerous nature of friendship and alcohol are the twin engines that drive Thomas Vinterberg's latest film, which does an admirable job of balancing the positive and negative aspects of both.

Martin (Mads Mikkelsen), Tommy (Thomas Bo Larsen), Nikolaj (Magnus Millang) and Peter (Lars Ranthe) are teachers at the same senior school who are all flirting with midlife crisis. History teacher Martin seems to have lost his mojo in the classroom and at home, where his encounters with his night-shift working wife Anika (Marie Bonnevie) are more practical than emotional. His colleaguesTommy and Peter are on the other side of failed marriages, while Nikolaj has just hit 40 and is trying to cope with the pressures his young family are applying to his relationship with Amalie (Helene Reingaard Neumann).

Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg’s Another Round is continuing its trajectory as one to watch this season. The Mads Mikkelsen-starrer has been shortlisted by Denmark’s Oscar Committee as one of three pictures that will vie to be the country’s entry for the International Feature Film Academy Award. The other two films are Rotterdam prizewinner A Perfectly Normal Family by Malou Reymann and Venice Critics’ Week title Shorta from Anders Ølholm and Frederik Louis Hviid. The official selection will be announced on November 18.

Another Round on Sunday scooped the Virtual Audience Award for Best Film at the BFI London Film Festival. It had previously received the official selection label for Cannes’ 2020 edition and had its international premiere during the Toronto Film Festival. Denmark’s Thomas Vinterberg reunites with most of the crew from his 2012 drama The Hunt for a drama about binge drinking, Druk (Next Round), which will star Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Lars Ranthe, Magnus Millang, Susse Wold, Helene Reingaard Neumann and Maria Bonnevie. Sisse Graum Jorgensen and Kasper Dissing are producing, while the project is being lensed by Sturla Brandth Grovlen. After getting a taste of Hollywood with his adaptation of Far From the Madding Crowd, Thomas Vinterberg headed back to Denmark for his next film, The Commune, adapted by Tobias Lindholm (his partner on The Hunt and Submarino, and a great director in his own right with A Hijacking and A War). Following a family whose move into a tiny community ends up tearing them apart, the film will finally arrive in the U.S. this summer via Magnolia and now the new trailer has landed.

A couple’s experiment with group living backfires in Thomas Vinterberg’s beautifully acted but heavy-handed drama

Danish director Thomas Vinterberg’s own experiences of growing up in a commune during the 1970s and 80s inform his unflinching approach to the subject in this drama, which was based on his own stage play, Kollektivet. More heavy-handed than Lukas Moodysson’s similarly themed Together, less abrasively confrontational than The Idiots by fellow Dogme 95 signatory Lars von Trier, The Commune is slightly melodramatic in its exploration of the emotional fallout when an experiment in collective living coincides with the breakdown of a marriage.

When university lecturer Erik (Ulrich Thomsen) inherits a huge house on the outskirts of Copenhagen, he is dissuaded from selling it by his wife, Anna (Trine Dyrholm), who proposes sharing the space with like-minded friends as a way of easing the financial burden, and staving off the middle-class, middle-age...

Thomas Vinterberg has yet to re-attain the heights of his 1998 breakthrough feature, the vehement Dogme inaugurator The Celebration. His focus on the scabrous underpinnings of interpersonal relationships has remained more or less constant, but his treatment of the subject has lost its trenchancy, and films such as Submarino and The Hunt are too willful and calculated in their abrasiveness to achieve genuine insight. Vinterberg co-wrote those later features with Tobias Lindholm (director of the excellent A Hijacking and A War), and the two Danes reunite for The Commune. Berlin International Film Festival (Feb 11-21) has added nine titles to its Competition line-up, bringing the current total to 14 (the full Competition programme will be announced soon, according to the fest).

The new additions include The Commune, marking the first time Danish director Thomas Vinterberg (The Hunt, Far From The Madding Crowd) has been in Competition at Berlin since Submarino in 2010. The film centres on a Danish commune in the 1970s and will be released in Denmark this weekend (Jan 14).

French director Mia Hansen-Løve (Eden) has been selected with her drama Things to Come, starring Isabelle Huppert as a woman embarking on a new life after her husband leaves her for another woman. The film will world premiere at Berlin.
