Warning: Spoilers for Action Comics #1078As an infant, Superman was sent off-world prior to Krypton's destruction, so he never got to grow up among other Kryptonians. Now, in a shocking upheaval to his status quo, Superman is officially exiled from Kandor forever.

Carol Danvers and Kara Danvers, two fctional superheroes raising one question: why do Captain Marvel and Supergirl have the same last name? There are striking similarities between many Marvel and DC superheroes, explained either by publishers taking inspiration from one another, or even creators moving between companies, and bringing similar heroes, villains, or stories with them.
On the surface, it's not hard to spot the similarities between Captain Marvel and Supergirl. Both are female versions of originally male characters: Supergirl was created as the female equivalent of Superman, while Carol Danvers originally suited up as Ms. Marvel in honor of the Kree superhero who first bore the name Captain Marvel. Both are beautiful blonde superheroines, and in fact, their power sets are comparable as well. Although Carol Danvers is now best known as an energy manipulator, she was a physical powerhouse, just like Supergirl. But how could they end up with the same?...

Kryptonite is an iconic part of Superman's lore, but it's almost always the green variant. Tons of differently colored Kryptonite exist, and Red Kryptonite is by far the most underrated - a fact best proven when one story brought back a horrifying redesign of a goofy Red Kryptonite adventure Superman had back in the Silver Age.
The Dark Multiverse is one of the most terrifying parts of DC's cosmology. It's where every story goes wrong, no matter how innocent it might start out. One horrifying example of this dark effect is featured in Sideways #8 by Dan Didio and Max Raynor. In this story, the young hero Sideways runs into a group of people who have been displaced from their homes, and one of them is a terrifying version of Superman.
This version of Superman was exposed to Red Kryptonite on his planet and transformed into a terrifying half-man, half-ant creature.

The Justice League. The Teen Titans. Heck, even the Outsiders. Most comic readers know these superhero teams from DC Comics, and can probably name at least a few key members, if not favorite stories.
But for a while in the 1980s, one team topped them all, rivaling even Chris Claremont’s X-Men run for comic shop supremacy: Legion of Super-Heroes won over readers with its futuristic space opera and its cast of unique characters.
The basic premise of the Legion of Super-Heroes is simple. 1000 years in the future, a group of superpowered teens take inspiration from Superboy and become heroes, most using powers they gained from their native planets. Like the best Superman stories, Legion tales tend to be optimistic and hopeful, certain that humanity can overcome its problems and work toward a better tomorrow.

Supergirl's debut in 1959 marked the beginning of her career as one of DC's most underrated heroes, sharing Superman's powers and costume. Her first appearance in "Action Comics" #252 introduced her as Kara Zor-El, cousin to Superman, and set up intrigue around her true intentions. Supergirl's character has evolved over the years, gaining more story potential and complexity, with her origin adjusted to reflect her experiences on Krypton.
The comic book debut of Supergirl deserves a deep dive. In 65 years, the Supergirl mythos has become as rich as that of her cousin's, with the character's popularity currently at an all-time high. DC Comics treats the character with enough respect to canonize that she's even stronger than Superman, solidifying her as DC's most overlooked character.
But to truly understand just how her popularity grew so vast over the years, one must analyze her original debut appearance in the DC Universe. Tracing the beginnings...

Nancy is a classic comic strip created by Ernie Bushmiller that first appeared in 1938. The strip follows the misadventures of the titular character, Nancy, and her friends as they navigate life in their small town. Over the years, several artists have taken over the strip, including Mark Lasky, Al Plastino, Jerry Scott, and most recently, Olivia Jaimes. Some of the most memorable moments in Nancy include when Nancy takes graffiti to a whole new level by drawing a flower around an open manhole, Sluggo's water gun antics, and Nancy's first female best friend, Esther. The strip also features several instances where Bushmiller breaks the fourth wall, acknowledging that his characters are in a comic. One of the more recent developments in the strip is the introduction of smartphones, apps, and streaming into Nancy's world by Olivia Jaimes. She has also shown how the modern world can be too busy to keep up with,...

Warner Bros.’ Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is taking flight with House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The actor screen-tested for writer-director Gunn last week, along with Meg Donnelly, who was also in contention for the role.
The film is partially inspired by the Tom King miniseries of the same name. Gunn and Safran have described this take as not the Supergirl audiences are used to. She will stand in contrast to her cousin, Superman. As Gunn told reporters in late January 2022: “We will see the difference between Superman, who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl, raised on a rock, a chip off of Krypton, and who watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life and then come to Earth.”

Brainiac has always been one of Superman's greatest enemies, and his reinvention in the New 52 continuity came with a secret identity nobody could have predicted. With his reboot, Brainiac infiltrated a part of society that everyone takes for granted, and proved that the villain still has a place in modern comics.
Created in 1954 by Otto Binder and Al Plastino, Brainiac has remained one of Superman’s most prominent foes since his very first appearance. Either an alien invader or a sentient AI with a robotic body, Brainiac has taken many forms over DC’s various continuities. What’s remained constant is that Brainiac shrinks cities down and stores them in bottles, most famously with the Kryptonian city of Kandor. With his prominence as a villain, it was all but guaranteed that Brainiac would be reinvented once more with DC’s 2011 continuity reboot, the New 52. In this incarnation, Brainiac is known as Brainiac 1.0 on Krypton.

James Gunn and Peter Safran have laid out their future plans for DC Studios, and the results are pretty exciting. Having the ship steered by someone with a clear vision and an obvious love of the source material is exactly what DC movies need. Speaking of comics, Gunn recently tweeted the inspirations behind DC's new direction. He was careful to say that while these books are significant to upcoming projects, DC Studios won't be adapting them all. It's great news because the comics serving as "touchstones" are all excellent!
DC Studios may not be directly adapting all the books Gunn mentioned, but we know one recent comic that is definitely getting a movie: "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow." The eight-issue miniseries from Tom King and Bilquis Evely first hit stands in 2021, wrapping up the following year.

It seems that Brainiac, the feared antagonist of Superman, had his entire history altered all because of an unfortunate coincidence with a toy. Thanks to a tricky legal situation, everything about Brainiac was changed, creating continuity errors and an altered legacy for the Coluan menace.
Of all the villains in Superman's rogues' gallery, one of the most dreaded is the knowledge thief, Brainiac. Hailing from the planet Colu, Brainiac's very name is synonymous with destruction. Brainiac travels to various planets, capturing and miniaturizing sample cities before destroying their worlds so he's the only possessor of its knowledge. Brainiac even attacked Superman's home planet, Krypton, adding the city of Kandor to his bottled collection. Brainiac's ego and his overwhelming armory of robots and drones makes him one of the DC Universe's most dangerous threats. Even Superman and his allies have struggled against the unique physical threat that Brainiac presents.

"Supergirl", The CW TV series, based on the DC Comics character by Otto Binder and Al Plastino, is celebrating its 100th episode, starring actress Melissa Benoist as the 'Girl of Steel':
"'Kara Zor-El' was sent to Earth from 'Krypton' as a 13-year-old by her parents 'Zor-El' and 'Alura'. Krypton was exploding, and Kara's parents sent Kara in a spacecraft to Earth after her cousin 'Kal-El'.
"Kara was meant to protect her infant cousin but her spacecraft was knocked off course and forced into the 'Phantom Zone', where it stayed for 24 years. By the time the spacecraft crash landed on Earth, Kal-El had grown up and become 'Superman'.

They say not to judge a book by its cover— but if that were the case, would DC Comics routinely be coming up with new looks for their comic book superheroes? Take Supergirl, for instance. She rose to Kryptonian legacy around 1959 under Otto Binder and Al Plastino's pen. Initially, Kara Zor-El was perceived to be the female counterpart to her cousin, Superman. But over the years, creative writers have taken the liberty of branching out this heroine by creating her own unique storyline and character arcs. With each new installment, Supergirl has been fashioned with topical costumes, some even reflecting the era in which the comics were conceived.

Supergirl is flying to the big screen again.
Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment are in the early stages of a “Supergirl” film. They have hired Oren Uziel to write the script, but have not found a producer yet.
The character has been played by Melissa Benoist in the titular CW series that’s heading into its fourth season and is overseen by Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg, and Allison Adler.
The “Supergirl” character first appeared in “Action Comics #252” from writer Otto Binder and illustrator Al Plastino. It followed Kara Zor-El, who was born and raised in Argo City, a fragment of Krypton that survived destruction. When the city is doomed, Kara is sent to Earth by her parents to be raised by her cousin Kal-El, known as Superman. Supergirl adopted the secret identity of orphan Linda Lee and made Midvale Orphanage her home.

In the aftermath of the #MeToo movement, Hollywood has taken notice, with much more of an emphasis not only on female filmmakers but female characters —Supergirl, we're talking to you — as well. In the world of superheroes, Marvel has certainly made great strides with the likes of Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow in various Avengers films, Zoe Saldana as Gamorra in Guardians of the Galaxy, Evangeline Lilly as Hope van Dyne, aka Wasp, in Ant-Man and the Wasp; and next year's Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson in the title role. And over at DC, there has been Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman, the sequel to which is filming now, and, of course, Supergirl. Supergirl was created in 1959 by writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino. Journalist Louis Black, who knew Otto well, comments to us, "One would be hard-pressed to argue that Otto was a feminist, but that having more...

Even though many enduring elements that we now associate with Superman were products of the Silver Age or the 1940’s radio drama, it’s important that we never forget the contributions that Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster made to comic books – and pop culture as a whole – when they created the Man of Steel for Action Comics #1 back in 1938. After all, that served as the very blueprint for the superhero genre as we know it today.
With that, one could say that the character’s 80th anniversary being celebrated by the release of the one-thousandth issue of Action is a bit too poetic. And appropriately enough, DC is complementing the periodical release of said issue with a commemorative hardcover titled Action Comics #1000: 80 Years of Superman. Suffice it to say, this is shaping up to be a must-own for any fan of Big Blue.
Understandably, many of you reading this...
