Benoit Blanc is the not-so-secret weapon of the "Knives Out" franchise. There's certainly no hiding him: Daniel Craig's performance is a highlight of both films and there are plenty of reasons why writer/director Rian Johnson would much prefer Blanc's name as the series subtitle. The Kentucky fried detective is a cigar-smoking, righteously angry, wealth-loathing star! But the very quiet truth of these movies is that, as much time as we spend with Blanc, how much do we really know about the man?
Blanc is introduced in "Knives Out" as though he's a caricature of the famed detective archetype we know so well: frequently called "the world's greatest detective," he's got a reputation that precedes him and plenty of famously solved cases under his belt. And what more do we learn from there? Well, the man obviously loves donuts, is filled with contempt for the wealthy elites he's so often surrounded by,...

This post contains spoilers for "Glass Onion."
Early on in Rian Johnson's follow-up to "Knives Out," it's clear that the penetrating mind of the gentlemen sleuth Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is clearly no match for the rather dull-witted billionaire playboy Miles Bron (Edward Norton). In "Glass Onion," Miles invites his oldest frenemies to his private island sanctuary to play a meticulously planned murder mystery game where he is the victim. As we get to know a little backstory, some clear motives emerge that point to someone who really wants him dead.
The title itself is a reference to a song featured on The Beatles' "White Album" subtly making fun of the super fans that overanalyze the band's lyrics. Johnson's film is also making a comment that sometimes we look for the meaning behind something when there may not be anything to decipher. Miles represents this idea as well, as...

If there’s one thing DC loves, it’s reboots. The comics cycle through their continuity in one form or another every decade or so, the movies…well…that’s a whole thing, too. So of course now it’s time for the DC animated movies to get a fresh start. And this time, they’re doing it with the hero who should pretty much always be the center of these things: Superman.
Since 2014, there have been 20 DC Universe Animated Original Movies, most of which existed in a shared continuity that began with Justice League: War and culminated in this year’s Justice League Dark: Apokalips War. With that story arc now complete, Superman: Man of Tomorrow will set up a new continuity for future movies. Butch Lukic is the new Supervising Producer for these DC movies, with Chris Palmer directing Man of Tomorrow.

With several tomes’ worth of backstory, enough screen time to fill up two and a half straight days of TV watching and a list of characters the size of Wun Wun (Rip, big fella), “Game of Thrones” might be the perfect TV show for the podcast era. Any of style of show works well in this universe: review show, obsessive deep dive, cultural criticism.
Some hosts can recite passages from “A Dance with Dragons” like scripture, while others are book agnostic. But the thing that ties them all together is this gargantuan television show that demands parsing out in other forums.

Dave Chen over at Slashfilm found this enlightening study that showed that there's a link between watching R-Rated films and early drinking. The study, which followed 3,600 middle-schoolers over a two-year period, showed that of the children who were allowed to watch R-Rated movies, 19 percent were drinking by the end of the two-year period, compared to 3 percent of those children who were not allowed to watch R-Rated movies. Moreover, of the children who were allowed to watch a lot of R-Rated films, 25 percent were drinkers.
So, watching R-Rated movies leads to drinking, right? Because children exposed to drinking in films will likely pick up the habit?
That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. What I don't suspect that this study takes into account is other environmental factors. Like, if your parents are the type to allow you to watch R-Rated movies a lot, wouldn't they be more likely to be the...

In January, Splice, Vincenzo Natali’s sci-fi horror film, premiered to good reviews at the Sundance Film Festival. The movie stars Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley as scientists who take bioengineering too far. After being shut down for wanting to create an animal-human hybrid, the duo takes matters into their own hands.
Most reviews were positive, although many were quick to note that this isn’t just a simple horror flick. Dave Chen of /Film called it a “quasi-serious exploration into the implications of playing God.” Sounds like a modern-day Frankenstein to me.
At the festival, the film was picked up by Warner Bros. and an early summer release was planned. The director was required to do some edits, but he claimed they were simply cosmetic. Now, the film has a trailer, embedded below.
