Between his Star Wars comics, novels, and audio dramas, few authors are as prolific in a galaxy far, far away as Cavan Scott. He is one the five original authors of Project Luminous, now better known as The High Republic, a multimedia publishing initiative that began in 2021 and is set to conclude in 2025. One of his many contributions is his tales in the short story collection Star Wars Insider: The High Republic: Starlight Stories.
After reading Starlight Stories, which you can see our review here, we had the privilege to interview Scott about these stories, the collaborative process of creating the collection, along with teases for The High Republic's endgame. Check out our interview below:

If you’ve ever wondered what happened to Kylo Ren between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, Marvel’s upcoming comic book series Star Wars: Legacy of Vader might just have the answers. Written by Charles Soule and featuring stunning artwork by Luke Ross, this new series dives deep into Ben Solo’s psyche during one of the most turbulent periods of his life.
IGN recently reported that Soule, no stranger to the Star Wars universe, previously chronicled Kylo’s transformation in The Rise of Kylo Ren back in 2020. Now, he’s picking up the story after The Last Jedi, exploring Kylo’s first steps as Supreme Leader. “This is a character who’s gone through so much change in such a short amount of time,” Soule says. “He’s dealing with trauma, power, and the weight of his choices — all while trying to convince himself he’s in control.

December is here to kick off a new week of Star Wars comics. We continue the maxiseries with the next entry and also get a brand new trade paperback out just in time for the holidays!
This Week in Star Wars Comics, it's The Battle of Jakku — Republic Under Siege #3!
The Battle of Jakku — Republic Under Siege #3
The rampant Imperial warlord Ubrik Adelhard continues his battle against the fledgling New Republic. Lando Calrissian challenges these remnants head-on, but it might be too late for the heroes. Losses begin to mount as an assassination occurs on the planet of Chandrila, and one of the good guys is taken out. The only hope might be that someone is hunting Adelhard, but are they friend or foe?
The Battle of Jakku - Republic Under Siege #3 is written by Alex Segura, illustrated by Stefano Raffaele and Alex Sinclair, and the cover artist is Taurin Clarke.

First announced for a 2020 release, Marvel Comics' tradition of Star Wars comic book adaptations finally continues next February with the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Adaptation.
Written by Jody Houser and illustrated by artist Will Sliney, the previously-announced five-issue limited series brings 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker film to the page at last. In addition to retelling the Resistance's desperate last stand, the shocking return of Emperor Palpatine and more, the series will include all new scenes not in the final film.
That last part is particularly interesting, especially as Episode IX left Star Wars fans with a long list of unanswered questions. However, we wouldn't necessarily go in expecting any more than what was in The Rise of Skywalker's novelisation. There's always a chance we'll be surprised.

Things are getting a little fuzzy This Week in Star Wars Comics. It's the anniversary of Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure this month, so it's only fitting there's a big focus on Ewoks this week. There is also a bit of The High Republic thrown in there too. Let's dive into it!
This Week in Star Wars Comics is all about Ewoks!
Ewoks #2
It's a battle for the heart of Endor and Bright Tree Village. While the Ewoks debate whether or not they should be welcoming to outsiders, bounty hunters 4-lom and Zuckuss invade to search for Imperial weapons. Will this sway the debate to close welcoming offworlders for good, or can Wicket, along with the warrior Meedro, convince his people there are good people in the world? And who is the Red Ghost and what role does she play in all of this? Ewoks #2 is written by Steve Orlando,...

Horror is one of the many genres that audiences love to digest. It's particularly prominent in cinema and on television, with horror movies and TV shows enjoying a lot of success over the past few decades. In fact, I recently put together a list recommending some horror movies and TV shows based on comic books.
But there are also plenty of horror comic books, too. With that in mind, I'd now like to focus on the comics that inspired many of the movies and shows from the previous list. So, without further adieu, here's some horror comic book recommendations for spooky season.
A note that this list is in no particular order!
Swamp Thing (Various)

Star Wars Insider: The High Republic: Starlight Stories is a collection of five short stories that take place during Phase I of The High Republic publishing initiative. The stories were originally published in past issues of Star Wars Insider magazine and will soon be available in a Digest Edition that also features an interview with the initiative's five original authors – Charles Soule, Cavan Scott, Justina Ireland, Claudia Gray, and Daniel José Older. The Digest Edition is out on November 12.
As someone who missed out on Starlight Stories when each story was first released, the new edition is an accessible way to read all the respective stories written by Soule, Scott, and Ireland. Each story is a compelling read that can be enjoyed and understood on its own. At the same time, for those who have read other High Republic stories, there are plenty of rewarding connections, along with a number of familiar faces that appear,...

Star Wars: The Force Awakens left fans with many unanswered questions, and filmmaker Rian Johnson's decision to turn many of J.J. Abrams' ideas on their head caused a lot of problems.
Abrams' attempt to course correct The Last Jedi with The Rise of Skywalker - Rey's parents went from somebodies to nobodies to...Emperor Palpatine?! - also didn't stick the landing.
The closest we've come to filling in the gaps between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, meanwhile, are Disney+ TV shows like The Mandalorian and Ahsoka. Even then, they're sticking closer to Episode VI than Episode VII.
Well, as we first reported on SFFGazette.com, we'll finally learn more about some of the gaps in Kylo Ren's past (and how Darth Vader connects to his transformation into Supreme Leader) with a new Star Wars: Legacy of Vader comic book from Marvel.

The "Star Wars" sequel trilogy will always be a complicated beast since what happened after "The Force Awakens" was unquestionably divisive. But it also delivered an inarguably compelling villain in the form of Kylo Ren, aka Ben Solo, the son of Han Solo and Leia Organa who was corrupted by the dark side only to be redeemed like his grandfather Anakin Skywalker, aka Darth Vader. There are some pretty major gaps in Kylo's story, but a new comic book series aims to fill in those gaps next year.

A few hours ago at the "Marvel Fanfare with C.B. Cebulski" panel at New York Comic Con, the Marvel Comics Editor in Chief was joined by artist Steve McNiven (Civil War) and New York Times best-selling author Charles Soule (Star Wars) to announce Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell.
The comic will mark McNiven's first major Marvel Comics work in nearly a decade. Joining him is no stranger to Hell's Kitchen. Soule, who had a classic run on Daredevil in 2015 reteams with the artist following their acclaimed work together on Death of Wolverine.

Star Wars stands as a cornerstone of modern science fiction, evolving from an innovative project to one of the most cherished and profitable fictional universes in history. When George Lucas launched the franchise with A New Hope, it changed the landscape of cinema, and today we recognize its profound impact and enduring success.
The franchise now encompasses not only the main films but also a wide array of TV shows, comic books, video games, toys, and other merchandise, continually expanding with fresh stories and new interpretations of classic narratives.
Given this ongoing evolution, it’s no surprise that more projects are on the horizon.

To celebrate ten years of storytelling for Star Wars comics, Marvel has announced a one-shot issue called Star Wars: A New Legacy arriving on January 29, 2025.
Many of us have enjoyed the Marvel Comics issues dating back to the movie adaptations in the 1970s, with stories about hoojibs, Crimson Jack, and the other continuing adventures of the Star Warriors. On January 14, 2015, the publisher released Star Wars (2015) #1 to kick off new stories for the next generation by writer Jason Aaron, featuring dynamic cover art by its penciler, John Cassaday. An opening crawl promised excitement as "the Rebels look to press their advantage by unleashing a daring offensive throughout the far reaches of space."

The Star Wars franchise has always had an interplay between good and evil, and some of the most interesting stories have explored where heroes interact with a side that is not their natural state. I remember being both disappointed in and intrigued by Princess Leia attempting to assassinate Darth Vader in Alan Dean Foster's Splinter of the Mind's Eye. Dark Empire settled Luke into the role of Palpatine's apprentice, following in his father's footsteps years after Anakin Skywalker died as a Jedi.
Now, a recent comic played on those pulls between dark and light as the heroes of the Rebellion had to make a die choice about the ethics of fighting their enemy.
"Evil is everywhere."

Well-known comic book artist John Cassaday has died at the age of 52. Star Wars fans may recognize some of his work from the early days of new canon Marvel comics in 2015.
Before working on Star Wars, Cassaday began his career as an artist for independent comics publishers. His career took off when he started drawing for Marvel and DC Comics, particularly with his work on Teen Titans and Flash.
His work on Astonishing X-Men, Planetary, and I Am Legion: The Dancing Faun won him the Eisner Award (basically the comics version of an Academy Award) for Best Penciller/Inker in 2005. He won the award again in 2006, along with the Eisner Award for Best Ongoing Series for Astonishing X-Men.
When Marvel reached an agreement with Lucasfilm and regained its Star Wars license, it relaunched the iconic Star Wars comic run in 2015. Cassaday had the honor of drawing the first arc of the series,...

The powers that be at Disney and Lucasfilm recently decided not to move forward with "The Acolyte" season 2, meaning the Disney+ "Star Wars" series will instead be a one-and-done. That's going to leave fans feeling many different ways, to be certain, not least of all when it comes to the many plot threads left dangling by the "Acolyte" finale (which may or may not eventually be picked up in another medium). More than that, it's highly likely that Lucasfilm won't be rushing to make more live-action "Star Wars" projects set during the High Republic era. That, in my humble opinion, is the real tragedy here.
The High Republic, for those who may not be familiar, started as a publishing initiative by Disney and Lucasfilm. Launched in 2020, it aimed to tell a connected series of stories largely through books and comics set in an era when the Jedi were at the height of their power.

[Editor’s note: This article contains spoilers for the season, now series, finale of “The Acolyte.”]
There is every indication that, as of San Diego Comic-Con just weeks ago, Lucasfilm was planning on a future for “The Acolyte.” Instead, on August 19, Deadline first reported that the Disney+ “Star Wars” prequel series was canceled.
So it’s strange that at Comic-Con on July 26, the annual Stories from a Galaxy Far, Far Away panel showed that Lucasfilm Publishing had invested a great deal in “The Acolyte,” with multiple new tie-in books and comics related to the show. Random House Worlds will be publishing a novel in 2025 by Justina Ireland about Rebecca Henderson’s Jedi Master Vernestra Rwoh and Carrie-Anne Moss’s Master Indara. February 2025 will introduce “The Acolyte” character Kelnacca, the Wookiee Jedi Master, into the ongoing “The High Republic” comic book series from Marvel. And in July 2025, there will even be a YA novel focusing on Charlie Barnett’s Yord and Dafne Keen’s Jecki.

It's been a bit of a rocky ride for fans of the Man Without Fear, better known as the Marvel comics hero Daredevil. It all started with a rather disappointing big screen outing in 2003 with Ben Affleck playing everyone's favorite blind crime-fighting lawyer, then a rather spectacular Netflix series that ran for three seasons starting in 2015, starring Charlie Cox as Daredevil. Unfortunately, the Netflix Marvel shows came to an end and it looked like that might be the last any of us would get to see of the character, but then the MCU scooped him up and changed the character's whole on-screen trajectory. Cox's Daredevil had a brief appearance in "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and appeared in the Disney+ series "She-Hulk," preparing audiences to dive back into the seedier, darker side of Marvel before "Marvel's Echo," which set the stage for "Daredevil: Born Again."

For nearly five years, Marvel Comics has been publishing Star Wars comic books set in the largely unexplored period between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
Across titles like Star Wars, Star Wars: Darth Vader, Star Wars: Doctor Aphra, and Star Wars: Bounty Hunters, we've experienced the adventures of Luke, Leia, Lando, and more iconic heroes during one of the darkest times for the Rebellion and discovered the trials Darth Vader overcame in a pivotal turning point in his journey through the dark side.
Today, it's been confirmed that this chapter comes to an end in September with two oversized epics: Star Wars #50 and Star Wars: Darth Vader #50. Then, later this year, Marvel Comics will take readers to a different era of the Galaxy, Far, Far Away...which has yet to be revealed.

What we know about the Jedi in Star Wars can — and has — filled not only several films and TV shows but a ton of books and comics, too. And, tellingly, one seclusive Jedi practice while introduced on screen in the films, was only given a name in the comic books. We’re talking about “the Barash Vow,” a Jedi tradition first explicitly mentioned in 2017 in issue #2 of Marvel’s first Darth Vader comic book miniseries. But, at this point, the Barash Vow is a big deal in Star Wars canon, having impacted the latter years of both Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
And, sneakily, this practice makes its way into the second episode of the newest Disney+ Star Wars TV series, The Acolyte. Here’s why the Barash Vow is such a big deal in Star Wars, why it appears in The Acolyte,...

There will be spoilers for the first and second episodes of "Star Wars: The Acolyte," so beware.
In "Star Wars: The Acolyte", Mae (Amandla Stenberg), the mysterious dark side wielding assassin who is killing Jedi, confronts Master Torbin (Dean-Charles Chapman) in a remote Jedi Outpost. Torbin, we learn, hasn't spoken to anyone in more than a decade and has taken the Barash Vow, so he floats in silent meditation, embracing nothing but the Force. Mae tries to attack him, but the bubble of the Force that keeps him levitating also keeps out her most vicious attacks, so Mae is forced to come up with another way to deal with her intended assassination of the Jedi she so desperately needs to complete.
Eventually, she's able to overcome his meditation -- not because she can penetrate his bubble of the Force, but because she offers him something he wants: absolution.
Torbin wakes up and apologizes to Mae,...

This article contains mild spoilers for "Star Wars: The Acolyte" episodes 1 and 2.
"Star Wars: The Acolyte," the brand new show on Disney+ set in a galaxy far, far away, is about as far removed from anything we've previously seen in the live-action "Star Wars" universe as you can get. Its story takes place in the High Republic era, a time period that most audiences are completely unfamiliar with and is entirely divorced from the events of the Skywalker Saga along with the majority of other live-action "Star Wars" projects released up to this point. Taking place roughly 100 years before "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace," there are very few constants for "The Acolyte" to fall back on.
One of those constants, however, involves bringing a key character from the High Republic books -- that of the Jedi Vernestra Rwoh -- into live-action in a way that might be surprising.

Spoilers for "Star Wars: The Acolyte" Parts 1 and 2 follow.
"I do not believe the Sith could have returned without us knowing," Mace Windu told Qui-Gon Jinn during the events of "The Phantom Menace." "The Sith have been extinct for a millennium," Jedi Master Ki-Adi-Mundi added.
As we all know that a millennium lasts a thousand years, it seemed unlikely that the Sith would be involved with "Star Wars: The Acolyte." Most of us assumed the Jedi would have had no interaction whatsoever with the secret line of Sith that led to Darth Sidious and his destruction of the Jedi until Darth Maul revealed himself to Qui-Gon on Tatooine.
But "The Acolyte" seems as though it could upend everything we knew about the involvement of the Sith and their quest against the Jedi in the time period the show takes place in, 100 years prior to the events of "The Phantom Menace.

Sometimes, the "Star Wars" universe can seem very small. The vast majority of television we've seen on Disney+ that takes place in a galaxy far, far away is intrinsically tied to the Skywalker Saga in one way or another. Even "Andor" ties directly into the Rebellion and the work of Princess Leia and the people of Alderaan, and it might be the one that feels most removed. The universe of "The Mandalorian" felt separate for a while, but Luke Skywalker's appearance in season two brought it right back into the world of the classic trilogy.
For most "Star Wars" fans — myself included — this small universe phenomenon where everything is connected is a feature, not a bug. That doesn't mean it's not still refreshing to see things completely divorced from the Skywalker Saga and gives us a new window into "Star Wars," and that's exactly what Leslye Headland's murder mystery series,...

While Hugh Jackman retired as Wolverine in the 2017 film Logan, he was confirmed to reprise his iconic role in the first X-Men film in the MCU i.e. Deadpool and Wolverine. The character has been one of the most popular X-Men characters in the comics, made more popular by Jackman’s seventeen-year tenure in the Fox Studios X-Men franchise.
Wolverine is famously known for his loner personality. But the immortal regenerative superhero has fathered a number of kids across the multiverse. He reportedly has ten kids alone in the main continuity in the Marvel universe Earth-616. And those children have many times been with other superheroes, making his spawns much more powerful. Darth Vader didn't always have a red lightsaber. Early concept art by Ralph McQuarrie (pictured below) shows Vader wielding a blueish-white blade, the same as the Jedi. After all, Vader was always a fallen Jedi (though making him Anakin Skywalker came later).
Lucasfilm/Ralph McQuarrie
Whatever the case, the change to red was the right call. The color complements his black armor better, contrasts with the blue and green blades he duels onscreen, and radiates evil. Symbolically, red is also the color of both anger and blood. The red lightsaber is such a memorable part of Vader's presence that when the "Star Wars" prequel trilogy came around, all the Sith Lords there had red lightsabers too. Ergo, red became the de facto color of evil lightsabers.
We first see a lightsaber when Ben Kenobi (Alec Guinness) gives one to Luke (Mark Hamill), saying the blue blade belonged to his father.

This post contains spoilers for Echo.
Not so long ago, a bright and insightful writer at the venerable pop culture site Den of Geek noted that the Kingpin of Crime Wilson Fisk could fill a gaping hole in the MCU. At the end of the fifth and final episode of Echo, that prediction looks even more sound.
Echo builds to a strange climax, in which Maya Lopez aka Echo gains indistinct superpowers and spreads them to her sister and grandmother to help them fight off Fisk and his men. But instead of punching Fisk into submission or shooting him in the face again, as she did at the end of Hawkeye, Maya performs something of a mind-meld on her adopted uncle.
The move forces him to relive his memories as a boy, listening to his father beat his mother. As Vincent D’Onofrio takes his giant baby approach to playing Fisk to its furthest extreme,...

Spoilers for "Echo" follow.
It wouldn't be a Marvel Studios production without a post-credits stinger. Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio) limps back home to New York City. As fate would have it, the jet's television is playing a new broadcast about the NYC mayor's race, with the subhead "No Clear Frontrunner."
Fisk turns up the volume and hears a panelist recounting polls that show most NYC voters' "ideal candidate [is] somebody who is a fighter." The host adds, "There are legitimate problems in the city right now — the voters want somebody who understands the pain they're going through," and the panelist replies, "A bare-knuckled brawler would do well in this race, an outsider, somebody who is not afraid to take on the establishment." However, as they lament, no such candidate has emerged and the race is in its last legs.

This post contains spoilers for episode 7 of "Ahsoka," "Dreams and Madness."
"A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, never for attack," Master Yoda advises a young Luke Skywalker in "The Empire Strikes Back." This line seems to be the foundation for the reason why the Jedi do not use the Force to fight as often as they can, and rely on their trusty lightsabers to do the job instead. However, during exceptional circumstances, some Jedi (and Sith) have relied upon a somewhat unique hand-to-hand force combat style to ward off foes. In the latest episode of "Ahsoka," Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi) uses a similar combat style, relying solely on the Force to fend off an attack on his Noti friends, while Sabine (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) promptly takes the enemies down with her blaster and lightsaber.

The old DC Universe is dead, long live the DC Universe. As we get closer and closer to the rebirth of James Gunn and Peter Safran's new DC hierarchy of power, there is plenty to be excited about, from new takes on iconic characters and also fresh new faces making the leap to the big screen.
One of the most exciting aspects of the new universe is the opportunity to get deeply weird, and no project feels as full of potential for weirdness as "Swamp Thing." We don't know much about the movie just yet, but it is a sign of confidence, Swamp Thing was the first upcoming DC movie to get a director announcement (other than James Gunn tackling "Superman: Legacy"), so it is clear DC's resident green monster will be an important part of the new universe.

One of the most exciting aspects of the new universe is the opportunity to get deeply weird, and no project feels as full of potential for weirdness as "Swamp Thing." Despite the cancellation of Netflix's "Daredevil" way back in 2018, Marvel Studios didn't let Ol' Hornhead slip through the cracks. Charlie Cox returned as Matt Murdock in "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and we eventually saw him suit up as Daredevil in "She-Hulk." Meanwhile, Matt's arch-rival Wilson Fisk/the Kingpin (Vincent D'Onofrio) appeared in "Hawkeye." These were all seeds that will finally sprout with "Daredevil: Born Again," set for release on Disney+ in 2024.
Keep in mind, this series is probably not going to be an adaptation of the eponymous Frank Miller/David Mazzucchelli comic story, mainly since season 3 of the Netflix series already covered that ground. Still, the title is too fitting to not use for a revival series (even if Cox insists "Born Again" will stand on its own). What direction will the story of "Born Again" take? If the writers pull from more recent comics, then Wilson Fisk may soon become Mayor Fisk.

“Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane is developing a television adaptation of the seven-book graphic novel series “The Shrouded College” for Peacock.
MacFarlane’s Fuzzy Door production company and UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, acquired the rights for “The Shrouded College” from authors Charles Soule and Will Sliney. Usg’s Creative Acquisitions and IP Management team, led by Jordan Moblo, alongside Fuzzy Door president Erica Huggins, were instrumental in securing the rights.
“The Shrouded College” series tells the stories of various characters enlisted to become secret agents fighting a supernatural cold war on the side of the Shrouded College, a down-and-out organization on the edge of destruction.
The show will be executive produced by Soule and Sliney alongside MacFarlane, Huggins, and Rachel Hargreaves-Heald for Fuzzy Door.
