The 16th annual Tribeca Film Festival announced today its lineup of immersive films, including 29 Vr and interactive projects in its Storyscapes and Virtual Arcade exhibits. Tribeca was one of the first U.S. festivals to showcase experimental storytelling projects, and as such the festival attracts world premieres from some of the vastly growing industry’s leading creators and studios.
Highlights include a virtual reality tour of the White House led by Barack and Michelle Obama; a new Vr collaboration from Chris Milk and by Pharell Williams; a mystery starring Emily Mortimer and Alessandro Nivola from interactive studio Eko; and a multidisciplinary exploration of women of color’s experience through the lens of technology, society and culture, titled “NeuroSpeculative AfroFeminism.”

The distributor has acquired all North American rights to Zachary Treitz’s debut feature and Tribeca 2015 selection.

Treitz co-wrote the screenplay with Kate Lyn Sheil. Steven Schardt produced the film, which earned Treitz the best new narrative director prize at the New York festival earlier this year.

Following her award-winning Your Sister’s Sister last year, Lynn Shelton returns behind the camera to bring us one of the best dramas of the year in Touchy Feely.
The independent feature made its debut at Sundance at the start of the year, and was thankfully one of the handful of films chosen to screen at Sundance London – you can read our review here. I saw its UK debut back in April and absolutely loved it, and am very much looking forward to a repeat viewing.
Boasting another fantastic ensemble cast, Shelton’s feature will be getting an early VOD release this summer, ahead of a theatrical Us release in September. And now Magnolia have released a terrific first trailer for the film.

Touchy Feely
Director/Writer: Lynn Shelton
Producer: Steven Schardt
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Ellen Page, Rosemarie DeWitt, Allison Janney, Scoot McNairy, Ron Livingston, Josh Pais
If the perfectly titled Touchy Feely hits its mark with the same accuracy as Your Sister’s Sister did in terms of likeable, flawed, multidimensional, complex set of characters, perfectly structured three-act with climatic denouement and naturalistic yummy dialogue, then I’ll regret having placed Lynn Shelton’s name further down the most anticipated list. After imperfect, humble beginnings, Seattle’s Best might be ready to cross over into television/broader comedy projects.
Gist: A massage therapist is unable to do her job when stricken with a mysterious and sudden aversion to bodily contact. Meanwhile, her uptight brother’s foundering dental practice receives new life when clients seek out his healing touch.

L’enfant chéri of the festival, Lynn Shelton has showcased Humpday (Sundance ’09) and Your Sister’s Sister (Sundance ’12) and by all logic should be bringing Touchy Feely to the fest as well. Naturally this was shot in her backyard of Seattle, where filming began in April of this year, so this should be prepped for a Premieres unveiling and a spirited bidding war. Cinematographer Benjamin Kasulke once again accompanies Shelton. So does her producer Steven Schardt. And so does actress Rosemarie DeWitt, who is joined by Ellen Page (see tweet pic with Shelton above), Scoot McNairy, Allison Janney, Ron Livingston and Josh Pais.
Gist: Working with several storylines, the comedy sees Rosemarie Dewitt as a massage therapist who suddenly finds the human body repulsive.

Prediction: Premieres section.

Chicago – The characters in a Lynn Shelton movie live relatively content lives until an unexpected event ruptures their sense of self. A self-absorbed writer awakens to the fact that he’s been a terrible friend in “My Effortless Brilliance.” Two heterosexual buddies test the boundaries of their relationship by attempting to film a porno together in “Humpday.”
In Shelton’s latest film, “You Sister’s Sister,” three close friends threaten to destroy their close bond when the truth proves to be difficult to accept. As in “Brilliance,” “Sister” takes place in a remote location. Jack (Mark Duplass) is still reeling from the death of his brother when he’s invited by his best friend, Iris (Emily Blunt), to stay at her family’s remote cabin. There he meets Iris’ half-sister, Hannah (Rosemarie DeWitt), a lesbian who isn’t above experimenting beyond her sexual boundaries, especially after a few drinks.

#78. Your Sister's Sister - Lynn Shelton It played extremely well at the Toronto Int. Festival. and got quickly picked up by IFC FIlms. With a pegged spring 2012 theatrical release planned, I can see Your Sister's Sister have its U.S premiere in Sundance's Spotlight section (best on the world film festival scene) or worse case scenario find itself at SXSW for a buzz showing weeks before the launch. Gist: A year after his brother's death, Jack (Mark Duplass) still see-saws between emotionally wobbly and outright volatile. When he makes a scene at a memorial party, Iris (Blunt) intervenes with a plan: Jack must oil up his old bike and trek to her father's cabin on an island on Puget Sound, where isolation will give his brain a chance to detangle. When Jack gets to the woods, however, he finds not solitude but Iris' sister Hannah (Rosemarie DeWitt), herself nursing a...

Directors: Sean Nelson, Steven Schardt Writers: Sean Nelson, Steven Schardt Starring: Joshua Leonard, Sean Nelson, Ross Partridge, Jessica Makinson, Brie Larson Leonard (Joshua Leonard) has a pitch for a new screenplay, but Nelson (Sean Nelson) -- the trust fund roommate from whom Leonard parasitically freeloads -- wants nothing to do with his genius zeitgeist ideas. Leonard insists that his financially-focused idea is especially meaningful at this particular juncture in time; but still, Nelson does not want to listen. Then, on one fateful night, Leonard is hanging out at a dive bar when Gregg D (Ross Partridge) -- a narcissistic ("You say narcissist, I say carbon-based life form") A-list action film star who Leonard wants to play the lead in the new script -- stumbles in the front door. Leonard follows Gregg D into the men's restroom, Gregg D pisses on his leg, and the rest is history... Well, not really.

Before you hear about Treatment from its witty, wacky co-directors and stars, here's an introductory tidbit about the film: 'Leonard and Nelson are friends/screenwriting partners looking for a fast track to success. As both confront a mid-30s reality check and a pile of unsuccessful screenplays, Leonard convinces Nelson to back his stint at a glitzy La rehab clinic so he can pitch their new movie deal to mega-star Gregg D. As the half-baked plan twists and turns, and Leonard's ambition and selfishness spin out of control, the writing duo's friendship cries for an overdue dose of reality.' --Genna Terranova Also to note: Parts of this interview are not 100% serious and tend to veer violently/delightfully off topic. Comedians; what can we say? Directors Steven Schardt and Sean Nelson Tribeca: Tell us a little about Treatment. Steven Schardt: Sean Nelson and I co-directed the film. Joshua Leonard...

In the last few years, actor Joshua Leonard has become the go-to actor for indie filmmakers, particularly the likes of Lynn Shelton who cast Leonard in her movie Humpday , which has spiraled into quite an amazing new chapter in Leonard's career. Leonard appears in two movies at this year's Tribeca Film Festival : Treatment , a comedy he stars in along with Sean Nelson, who also wrote and co-directed the film with Steven Schardt, the two of them playing screenwriters who get the crazy idea of sending Leonard into rehab to get close to a superstar actor Gregg D, played by Ross Partridge; and Vera Farmiga's Higher Ground , a film we raved about at the Sundance Film Festival . The last time we spoke to Leonard was for Humpday along with Shelton and Mark Duplass, and we found...

"Treatment" is the funniest, most energetic film yet to come out of the mumblecore movement, which has proven to be as incestuous as it is prolific. Its star, Joshua Leonard (whose beak nose and shaggy charm resemble Owen Wilson's), and director/producer Steven Schardt were also involved with 2009's “Humpday." That movie's co-star Mark Duplass was the co-director of 2008's “Baghead”; Duplass' wife, Katie Aselton, directed, wrote, and starred in last year's “The Freebie,” which also featured Leonard. Some of the troupe—Duplass and Greta Gerwig, most notably—have paved their way into mainstream films.
Until now, these mumblecore films have retained a depressing, stilted sameness. They are small in scale, taking about a week or so to shoot in one or two settings, and hew to the mumblecore style of stammering dialogue, tight close-ups and an endlessly shaky camera, all in the service of achieving so-called realism.

And the festival beat marches on… nothing on this list immediately jumps out at me… no titles I recognize. These are just the World Narrative and Documentary competition selections, so, there’ll be more announcements made later. I do see representation from South Africa, Egypt and Rwanda. Rachel Weisz and Emily Blunt are to play sisters in a new semi-improvised project. The as-yet-untitled movie, which is to be filmed in Seattle later this month, is to be produced by Steven Schardt, and is expected to take just a couple of weeks to shoot.
Indie director, writer and producer of the film Lynn Shelton has recruited the two British stars to play a pair of siblings who find their relationship is put to the test when a man, played by "Humpday" actor Mark Duplass, threatens to come between them.
Both actresses are well-known for having notoriously busy work schedules, with Weisz having spent a week on Terrence Malick's untitled new film earlier in the month, while shooting for "The Deep Blue Sea" begins in November. Emily Blunt and Rachel Weisz have signed on to play sisters in Lynn Shelton’s new semi-improvised, and currently untitled, comedy project.
The film will be Shelton’s follow-up to the well-received bromance film Humpday, and will see her reunite with producer Steven Schardt.
Production will commence next month in Seattle and is expected to run for a month, allowing both actresses to squeeze it in to their busy schedules.
The idea of seeing Blunt and Weisz play sisters in an improvised comedy is incredible. I’m sure that with Shelton’s low-key expertise, and the commercial draw of both actresses, this film will be a sure-fire hit.
Blunt will next be seen in Universal’s sci-fi mystery The Adjustment Bureau, while Weisz portrays a Nebraskan cop in The Whistleblower. Both of which will be released early next year.
Deadline reported this one.

Exclusive: They’re about to work together in Lynn Shelton’s new semi-improvised and as-yet-untitled project. Production starts later this month in Seattle. Steven Schardt, co-producer on Shelton’s bromantic comedy Humpday, will produce. The whole movie’s only taking a couple of weeks to shoot, which is how Rachel Weisz can squeeze it in after spending one week on Terrence Malick’s untitled new film, and before Terence Davies starts shooting The Deep Blue Sea in November. Blimey, Weisz must be the busiest actress working in Britain. She’s repped by Independent in London and CAA in the Us. Not that Blunt’s any slouch. She recently signed to headline Rian Johnson’s Looper, opposite Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis. In March 2011 she'll star opposite Matt Damon in sci-fi mystery The Adjustment Bureau opposite Matt Damon. Blunt is repped by CAA in the U.S. and Ken McReddie Associates in London.

Rachel Weisz and Emily Blunt will star together as sisters in Lynn Shelton’s untitled project, according to Deadline. Production is slated to start late October in Seattle. Steven Schardt (Humpday), will produce. Weisz has time to fit the film in after Terrence Malick's new film and just before working on The Deep Blue Sea (no, not a shark film revamp). Emily Blunt's also a busy actress and recently signed on to star opposite Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Looper, helmed by Ram Johnson. She'll be seen in March alongside Matt Damon in The Adjustment Bureau from Universal Pictures. Two very talented acresses should turn in solid numbers.
