The Son series finale makes a small revision to a tall tale to create a myth worthy of "The Legend."

The Son Season 2 Episode 10
The Son, season 2, episode 10, "The Legend," concludes the series' run with the birth of a border town mythology and the lessons learned from the sins of a father. The great state, and former republic, of Texas is a land of tall tales. Last week's episode, "The Bear," included a version of the ultimate fate which befell Eli McCullough, leading the audience to a false conclusion. Oh, we doubted the accuracy, how could anyone know what was going through Eli's mind in his last hours facing off against the biggest bear in a state where bears are scarce. But we ultimately buy it. It's Texas, and it is a large enough story to give us a sense of comforting closure.

The Son Season 2 Episode 9
The penultimate installment of The Son, season 2, episode 9, "The Bear," readies the series for a somewhat forgone conclusion. But the closure is coming like a set of pincers squeezing several wounds at once, and not all of them healing. All three generations of McCullough are in danger of facing change and loss of fortune. All three face choices which alter their comfort, even as they move out of their comfort zones.
The episode centers, emotionally, on Jeannie McCullough (Sydney Lucas). Last week, she witnessed her mother cheating on her father with their son's music teacher. The young McCullough ran away from home to escape a lying family only to barely escape a back road rape from a travelling salesman.

The Son Season 2 Episode 8
The Son, season 2, episode 8, "All Their Guilty Stains," gives us something of a breather after a run of intensely perilous episodes. This is not to say it is lacking in danger or intensity, but it doesn't have the immediacy of the running buildup. The series loses a major character, which we knew was coming, but even this is something of a respite from the intensity of the past few weeks.
The episode opens on Sally McCullough (Jess Weixler) humming to herself while her son takes a piano lesson in another room. She loses patience and tells her son, out of the blue, to clean his room because the lesson is over. This has been building over the past few episodes. Sally's under a lot of stress,...

Eli McCullough (Pierce Brosnan) shows the first cracks in the armor which has protected him his whole life. His many lives, if you count how many times he's survived seemingly insurmountable wounds. The episode shows he's not as self-sufficient as he's let on. A stronger force has been propping him up since his days as a Comanche, and it is sobering to see Eli so nakedly needy. Although, not quite sobering enough.

When the long-awaited second season premiere was finally announced, the cable network also revealed this was the end of the hunt -- there would be no season three. Since viewers already know it is effectively cancelled (i.e. ending), will that affection Nielsen ratings for The Son? Stay tuned.

This The Son review contains spoilers.
The Son Season 2 Episode 2
In The Son, season 2, episode 2, "Ten Dollars and a Plucked Goose," the McCulloughs serve up a Christmas feast and the jackals show up. The family is well known in the town. The story of the First Son of Texas, the Colonel, is already becoming local myth, at odds with the realities behind it.
The opening sequence is fraught with contradictions. Eli McCullough (Pierce Brosnan) tells a gathered crowd how happy he is that his son, Pete (Henry Garrett), is home safe after fighting so bravely against enemies of the area. Pete wriggles around uncomfortably. We know it's not just that he's humble. He's got secrets. Everyone on The Son has secrets, but his are glaringly close to the surface.

AMC’s martial arts drama Into the Badlands will end after the upcoming final eight episodes of its third season, which will debut March 24. The network also has set an April 24 premiere date for Season 2 of drama The Son, starring Pierce Brosnan, which will be its last.
Neither cancellation is particularly surprising. Both Into the Bandlands and The Son were renewed for Season 3 and Season 2, respectively, almost two years ago. Into the Badlands’ 16-episode third season was completed awhile ago, the cast was released, and a number of them have taken on new acting gigs. As for The Son, as a Western, it did draw respectable viewership though it was old-skewing. Additionally, I hear star Brosnon only had signed a short-term contract which is the case with many movie stars who do TV series these days.

Loss builds resolve. At least that seems to be the main message in AMC’s latest drama The Son, in its debut episode. Opening in 1849 with a focus on a young Eli McCullough, the central protagonist who will grow into the fine form of a bearded Pierce Brosnan, we see him taking up mantle of ‘man of the house’, hunting and showing a large amount of self-assurance. Pierce Brosnan returns to the small screen, and we couldn't be more excited!
While he might not have the best Texas accent we've ever heard, Brosnan still delivers a powerful performance as the older Eli McCullough, who is at the center of this compelling new western drama.
The Son Season 1 Episode 1 and The Son Season 1 Episode 2 introduce us to McCullough in two separate timelines. In them, we learn how the young man who survived a Comanche Indian attack becomes a ruthless cattle baron later in life.
Jacob Lofland is just as powerful as young Eli, as the two timelines converge to give us a clear picture of a man who only wants to protect what's rightfully his.
We are first introduced to Eli as a young man hunting for food for his family while his father is out of town. The family comes under attack by Comanche Indians and his mother and sister are killed.

Even the most casual western fans know that the genre has lost quite a bit of its lustre over recent decades, at least when it comes to stories that revisit much of the same material covering the 19th Century – frontiers, Indians, cowboys, railroads, and all the usual greatest hits. More recently, the modern western has been at the forefront of cinema and well-realized through relevant epics like last year’s Hell or High Water. In the same way that film starring Jeff Bridges managed to closely inspect the fallout of race relations in West Texas, AMC’s The Son attempts to do the same during the period in between the mid-19th Century and the early 20th, mantled by a frontier on the cusp of the industrial age.

The last time we saw Pierce Brosnan on a television series was on Remington Steele. This time around instead of playing a detective, he plays the patriarch of the McCullough clan, a Texas family rich in the oil and cattle business.
The series is based on Philipp Meyer's 2013 novel of the same name. If focuses on Eli's life as a young boy growing up in 1849 and as an adult in 1915. It wasn't an easy road for Eli and he'll do anything to protect what he worked so hard and suffered for, no matter the consequences.

“The Son,” aptly, is the story of sons. While one could argue it should’ve then been called “The Sons,” the title of Philipp Meyer, Lee Shipman, and Brian McGreevy’s new AMC series almost feels like an invitation to pick one of the many featured sons, and that’s the one you’ll care about. Even if this is the case, the main protagonist, Eli McCullough — who’s more than likely the titular “Son” — is flawed not only in character, but also in concept. So the many scenes devoted to both the young and old versions of him hamper any enjoyment in the other intriguing characters and makes the first two episodes a bit of a slog.
Primarily focusing on two defining time periods in Eli’s life — set during 1849 and 1915 — the hour-long western incorporates at least three additional sons into the narrative. We meet Young Eli (Jacob Lofland...

Pierce Brosnan is set to replace Sam Neill in the lead role in AMC's upcoming drama series "The Son," marking only his second major TV series role - the first being the one that shot him to fame over thirty years ago - NBC's "Remington Steele".
Based on the book by Philipp Meyer and written by Meyer, Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy, the multi-generational epic follows America's birth as a superpower through the bloody rise and fall of one Texas family.
Brosnan will play Eli, a a relic of the Wild West and the charismatic patriarch of the McCullough family. As a child, he was kidnapped and raised among the Comanche Native American tribe and applies the brutal Comanche worldview to his business dealings.
Neill was originally cast in the role but left for personal reasons. The series has a ten-episode straight-to-series order with Tom Harper ("War & Peace") directing the opening episode.
