Image
In 2008, singer-songwriter Grace Potter and her band at the time, the Nocturnals, were on the way to play a concert in New York’s Central Park, when Potter popped a freshly burned CD into their truck’s dashboard stereo. It was her first time listening to her just-mastered solo album, Medicine, which she’d recorded over the course of two thrilling weeks at Los Angeles’s Village Studios with legendary producer T Bone Burnett and his wrecking crew of luminaries that included drummer Jim Keltner and guitarist Marc Ribot. But Potter had only heard Medicine “exactly one time,” when, as she remembers with crystal clarity,...

SXSW-Bound Doc ‘Resynator,’ Featuring Peter Gabriel, Explores the Technology Behind the Synthesizer in First Clip (Exclusive)
Image
In the documentary “Resynator,” director Alison Tavel resurrects a synthesizer prototype that her late father, Don, invented.

Tavel, who lost her father when she was just 10 weeks old, initially wanted to make a short film doc about the synthesizer, which her father called the Resynator. The late-1970s invention generated a lot of buzz but never reached mass production. Tavel’s curiosity about the instrument ultimately led the director on a journey that helped her not only understand the Resynator and how it worked, but also who her father really was.

Tavel’s short doc eventually turned into a 96-minute film that includes interviews with estranged family, friends, inventors and celebrated musicians including Peter Gabriel, Fred Armisen and Jon Anderson.

Variety spoke to Tavel ahead of the doc’s SXSW world premiere on March 10.

What inspired you to make this documentary?

I had been on tour with [musician] Grace Potter for...

Grammy campaigning: Here’s how artists put themselves out there during first-round voting
Image
Campaigning is an essential part of a successful awards season. This year it has been varied with the return of TV appearances in addition to performances for internet media voters may frequent. And campaigning seems as intense as ever, so let’s look at how the potential nominees did so before nomination voting closed on October 20.

SEEBillboard Music Awards announce 2023 revamp, promising ‘a fresh award show concept’

Late night talk shows

Talk shows have always been good campaigning spots, and this year they were even more so. Talk shows went off-air for months due to the WGA strike, so many people were eager to watch them again when they finally came back on the air. Coincidentally, the return of these shows almost matched with the first day of Grammy voting (October 11), so there was a lot of hype that artists could take advantage of.

Boygenius, for example, performed their Best...

All Execs and No Talent Makes Warner Bros. Discovery Upfront a Dull Event
Image
WGA members have picketed each of the TV upfronts thus far, and on Wednesday morning, strikers did not miss an opportunity to stick it to David Zaslav at Warner Bros. Discovery’s presentation to advertisers. Or more accurately, they did so from an NYPD-controlled pen immediately outside the presentation venue.

Inside The Theater at Madison Square Garden, adjacent to where Zaslav’s beloved New York Knicks play, the chief executive’s immediate underlings shared their respective upcoming slates to the media buyers in attendance. That’s a task normally reserved for celebrities, a thrill for the folks who financially support a program via television commercials. While actors has consistently avoided each upfront event this year in solidarity with their writers, NBCUniversal, Fox, and Disney each had in-person unscripted talent at their presentations; Wbd went fully without.

“We made the decision to only have executives on stage out of respect for our talent,...

Writers Strike Front and Center as NBCUniversal Kicks Off Upfronts Week
Image
If NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation Monday morning was any indication, the week ahead will be a relatively low-key affair, with plenty of pitching, with very little in the way of specifics.

There will be one constant, however: Striking writers.

Outside of Radio City Music Hall on Monday, a crowd of more than 200 writers marched in front of the venue’s various entrances, calling for a fair deal.

The strike was also present during the presentation itself, where the usual parade of actors and stars was replaced by a cavalcade of NBC News anchors, like Willie Geist and Savannah Sellers, who introduced clip packages for the company’s lineup of TV shows and films.

“If you squint a little bit, I could be Colin Jost,” Geist said, before introducing a Saturday Night Live clip reel.

But the strike was also addressed overtly, with executives resigned to navigate the upfront with the uncertainty it will create.

Highlights From NBCUniversal Upfront; News Personalities Introduce Programming, Showrunners Appear Via Video & Ariana Madix Gets Her Moment
Image
Despite the WGA picketers outside, NBC held its upfront presentation Monday at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Missed the star-free event that was hosted mostly by news personalities, Real Housewives and Mario Lopez? Here were the highlights:

Seth MacFarlane got another chance to show off his singing pipes — and crude sense of humor — by appearing in a pre-taped segment as his alter-ego Ted at the top of the presentation: he sang an original song about NBC selling ads about “detergent and feminine pads” and “kicking nads.” In 2021, Peacock gave a straight-to-series order to a live-action comedy series based on MacFarlane’s 2012 movie featuring the furry character.

Some “Ted” Talks resonate more than others...

Bob Dylan praises Eminem and Wu-Tang Clan in new interview
Bob Dylan
Bob Dylan has revealed that he enjoys listening to Eminem and the hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan.

In a new interview, the singer opened up about his favourite artists and explained that he usually discovers new music “mostly by accident”.

Dylan, 81, told The Wall Street Journal that he “is a fan of” Eminem and Wu-Tang Clan and praised them both for their “feeling for words and language”.

He also said that he likes listening to “anybody whose vision parallels mine”.

This is not the first time Dylan has discussed Eminem. In 2001, he admitted to Time that he didn’t know that much about the rapper, but said: “I almost feel like if anything is controversial, the guy’s gotta be doing something right.”

In the same interview, 21 years ago, Dylan claimed that he hated most modern music and said that the radio makes “hideous sounds”.

Gillian Welch, David Rawlings Talk 20 Years Since Landmark Album ‘Time (The Revelator)’
Image
“Honest to god,” says Dave Rawlings, “we could talk about this album for a week.”

Rawlings and Gillian Welch would be the first to admit that it’s difficult to discuss their landmark third album Time (The Revelator) without launching into a thousand tangents. Every one of its 10 songs, every raw emotion the duo channeled into the record, every one of their failed attempts to record the album — each of these could be the subject of its own lengthy interview. Each backstory has its own backstory, its wheel inside a wheel.
