James Van Der Beek
Exclusive: James Van Der Beek on Channeling Diplo and Checking Into ‘Room 104’
James Van Der Beek
On the new Viceland series What Would Diplo Do?, James Van Der Beek takes on his most unexpected role yet: the Grammy-winning DJ and record producer behind M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” and “Where Are U Now” with Skrillex and Justin Bieber among other international hit songs.

But it should come as no surprise the actor would defy the expectations of audiences who grew up with him on Dawson’s Creek. Van Der Beek has taken on darker roles like The Rules of Attraction and playing a fictionalized version of himself on the short-lived Don’t Trust the B--- in Apartment 23. And playing ridiculous version of Diplo is no different.

“[Fans] have seen me do weird stuff in between,” Van Der Beek says, referring to Dawson’s Creek and more traditional roles like Friends With Better Lives and CSI: Cyber. “I think I’ve prepped them for this moment… they’re going...

The Duplass Brothers are Back on TV! 7 Reasons to Get Excited About ‘Room 104’
Room 104 (2017)
[Editor’s Note: This article is presented in partnership with HBO in support of Room 104, which premieres onJuly 28 at 11:30 p.m. Et.]

“Room 104” isn’t like anything else you’ll see on television this year. The new half-hour, genre-bending HBO series features a number of unique facets, but they all relate back, in one way or another, to the creative minds of Mark and Jay Duplass.

The writers, producers, directors, and actors known for breakout independent films like “The Puffy Chair” and “Cyrus” as well as award-winning television like “Togetherness” and “Transparent” have come together to create the latest exciting original series on the Home Box Office network.

Set in a single room in your typical American motel chain, each week tells a different story and all 12 episodes of Season 1 were produced by the Duplass Brothers. The tone, characters, and era can all change week-to-week, and viewers should be ready for drama, comedy, horror, and at the start of each new entry. What unites each story is the common search for...

‘Room 104’ Premiere: Mark Duplass Stuns Atx with Genre-Bending HBO Anthology Series
Jay and Mark Duplass are creators who don’t like to be put in a box, even if they’re making six hours of television set within the same four walls.

“Room 104,” the new HBO anthology series from the Duplass brothers, tells individual, episodic stories in each of its 12 half-hour installments, and all 12 are set within the same cheap, dingy hotel room. The first episode, which premiered at the Atx TV Festival Saturday evening, is a lot closer to Mark Duplass’ work in indie films “Creep” and “The One I Love” than the brothers’ former HBO comedy.

During a panel discussion following the episode, Duplass said he felt inspired by the constraints of the premise.

“I have something like 218 ideas in a Word document on my computer,” Duplass said.

Noting how it felt like he was back making low-budget indie films, Duplass said he wrote seven of the 12 episodes...

Watch: Sharon Tate’s Path Gets Tracked in Exclusive Clip From ‘Manson Family Vacation’
Before Karina Longworth provided one of the most disturbing and thrilling accounts of the Manson family in her podcast You Must Remember This, South by Southwest Film Festival featured a premiere of a drama with a different spin on the account. Written and directed by J. Davis, Manson Family Vacation is a present-day story of two brothers who take a road trip to the infamous murder sites.

Produced by the Duplass brothers and starring Jay Duplass, Linas Phillips, Tobin Bell, Leonora Pitts and Davie-Blue, we’re pleased to premiere an exclusive clip from the film, which follows our leads (or at least one) tracking the path of Sharon Tate before her gruesome demise. Check out the clip below and see the trailer here if you missed it for the film now available on VOD (including iTunes and Amazon).

Jay Duplass Takes ‘Manson Family Vacation’ In First Trailer For SXSW Dramedy
Before Karina Longworth provided one of the most disturbing and thrilling accounts of the Manson family in her podcast You Must Remember This, South by Southwest Film Festival featured a premiere of a drama with a different spin on the account. Jay Duplass & Linas Phillips Star in 'Manson Family Vacation' Trailer
"There's some really cool pictures of dead people!" The Orchard has debuted a trailer for the offbeat indie comedy Manson Family Vacation, about two estranged brothers who go on a weird trip together to visit the infamous Manson Family murder sites. Jay Duplass stars as one of the brothers, with Linas Phillips (Bass Ackwards) as the other. The synopsis describes it as a story about two brothers: "one who's devoted to his family; the other who's obsessed with The Manson Family." The film's cast also features Tobin Bell, Leonora Pitts and Davie-Blue. This is such an awkward comedy, I can see why they're sending it straight to VOD, definitely not for everyone. Not sure who it's for, but some may find some fun in this. Have at it. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for J. Davis' Manson Family Vacation, on YouTube (via SlashFilm): Nick Morgan (Jay Duplass) has it all: a loving family,...

The Overnight

Director/Screenwriter: Patrick Brice

Two families meet at the park and set up a playdate that has unexpected outcomes for all. Cast: Adam Scott, Jason Schwartzman, Taylor Schilling, Judith Godrèche. (film synopsis from sxsw.com)

Overall

It’s hilarious. The boundaries of bromance, marriage, friendship and even penis comedy are pushed to a very funny limit with this film. It’s great to see Schilling doing great work outside of “Orange is the New Black.”

Final Score: 8/10

Reclusive small town locksmith, A.J. Manglehorn, who has never recovered from his losing his true love embarks on a new tenuous relationship with a local woman he meets at the bank. Cast: Al Pacino, Holly Hunter, Harmony Korine, Chris Messina. (U.S. Premiere)

SXSW 2015 Adds Melissa McCarthy’s Spy, Will Ferrell’s Get Hard, Ryan Gosling’s Lost River And Many More
With Sundance in the rear view mirror and Berlin just around the corner, another huge festival that’s now very much in mind is the 2015 South By Southwest Film Festival (SXSW 2015), to be held in Austin, Texas, this March. And this year, the lineup looks no less eclectic than in any previous year for the festival.

SXSW 2015 will see the debut of two big-studio comedies (Paul Feig’s Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy; and Etan Cohen’s Get Hard, starring Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart), some red-hot documentaries (none more so than Alex Gibney’s Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine) and a vast array of smaller indie titles. Intriguingly, Judd Apatow’s Amy Schumer vehicle Trainwreck will be screened as a work-in-progress.

Elsewhere, Alex Garland’s well-received Ex Machina will be making an appearance, as will Ryan Gosling’s much-maligned Lost River. And curiously, there will be a...

Review: Bass Ackwards | You Made Me Love You
Bass Ackwards has been, thus far, the unexpected gem of the 2010 Independent Film Festival Boston. Writer/director/star Linus Phillips' winsome road trip movie has all the earmarks of a Rowlesian work of whimsy, a genre that I find particularly grating. Yet it's done with such honest affection and bright-eyed optimism that instead, I found myself completely captivated by it.

In the film, Phillips plays a version of himself, named Linus. He's an affable loser, living on an air mattress in his friends' study, finding pick-up work as a wedding videographer, and having an affair with Georgia (Davie-Blue), a married woman who can't quite requite the emotion he's invested in her. Unsurprisingly, this unsteady existence eventually comes tumbling down around him -- his friends ask him to move out, Georgia passively ends their relationship, and Linus takes refuge working for a free room at a local llama farm. He idles...

Sundance 2010 Review: Bass Ackwards
Rating: 7.5/10

Writers: Linas Phillips, Davie-Blue, Jim Fletcher

Director: Linas Phillips

Cast: Linas Phillips, Alex Karpovsky, Davie-Blue, Jim Fletcher

Studio: Furnace Films

Linas (Phillips) is kind of an odd duck. Well, more like…he’s the type of guy everyone kind of hates, but you can’t really put your finger on just why the ill-feelings towards him are so across the board. I know people like that in real life and you probably do too. If you don’t, chances are you are that person…but I digress.

2010 Sundance Film Festival - 'Bass Ackwards' poster, images and trailer.
Continuing out 2010 Sundance Film Festival coverage, we are pleased to present you with the poster, images and trailer for "Bass Ackwards." The comedy will have a nationwide digital release on February 1st. Linas Phillips directs and stars alongside fellow writers David-Blue and Jim Fletcher. Also starring are Alex Karpovsky, Andrew Liam Pringle and Christian Palmer. Bass Ackwards is a captivating and consummately human film that reminds us that whatever we think the road is about; the trip is probably about something else. Alternating between scripted action, improvisation, and the unpredictable spontaneity of vérité encounters, the film is the semi-autobiographical story of Linas Phillips, who stars as well as directs. Born of the imagination of Linas and his easy collaboration with old friends, costars, and co-conspirators Davie-Blue, Jim Fletcher, Paul Lazar, and Sean Porter, the film effortlessly and organically crosses the line between reality and fiction, incorporating the people and characters...

Sundance 2010 Next: Move Over SXSW
The lucky inaugural eight include: Habib Azar's Armless, Linas Philips's Bass Ackwards, Sultan Sharrief's Bilal’s Stand, Katie Aselton's The Freebie, Barnes Bros' Homewrecker, Adam Bowers's New Low, Michael Mohan's One Too Many Mornings and Eyad Zahra's The Taqwacores - which has nothing to do with the docu film Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam: (same subject, different film). - If you see or hear me calling this the Miranda July's (you'll have to have seen Me and You and Everyone We Know) section it's because of its no greater or lesser than emblem ( < = > ). Sundance Reveals 2010 Non-Competition Slate
On Wednesday the Sundance Film Festival unveiled the films competing in late January 2010. Yesterday they announced the rest of the line-up of independent films vying for attention for industry types and the curious public.

The entire list of 53 films is below, but here are a few that stood out to me from the premieres alone:

Mumblecore directors the Duplass Brothers, have a new, untitled movie starring an unusually high-profile cast compared to their usual improvisational crew. John C. Reilly, Marisa Tomei, Jonah Hill, and Catherine Keener. Reilly and Keener are actually in two films at the 2010 festival.

The Company Men, starring Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Maria Bello, Tommy Lee Jones, Chris Cooper, Rosemarie DeWitt about corporate downsizing.

Rodrigo Cortes’ Buried, starring Ryan Reynolds as a man buried alive in a coffin. I’ve read the script and its great. More on that as soon as I can.

Sundance 2010 Non-Competition Line-Up Looks Strong
Yesterday we got the list for the films playing in competition at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and today we get the rest of the films that will be featured and there are quite a few that make 2010 look much stronger based on pedigree alone than I have seen in quite some time. Variety has a big write-up detailing the categories and more on the festival right here, but I am just going to offer up the titles and let you sort it all out.

The titles already in the RopeofSilicon database are linked.

Premieres

All films are from the United States unless otherwise noted Abel (Mexico-u.S.), the directorial debut of actor Diego Luna, written by Luna and Agusto Mendoza, about a peculiar young boy who, as he blurs reality and fantasy, takes over the responsibilities of a family man in his father's absence. 2010 Sundance Film Festival Out-of-Competition Films: Next
Yesterday we gave you a list of all the films playing in-competition at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. We now have the list of the films playing out-of-competition and they’re divided up into four categories: Premieres, Next, Spotlight, and Park City at Midnight. Since combining these lists would be a lot to read for just one article, we’ve broken it up to make it easier on your eyes. You’re welcome.

The “Next” category features filmmakers and actors you’ve probably never heard of before, but that doesn’t mean these films aren’t worth seeing. On the contrary, because there are only eight of them, folks attending the festival may want to find some time to try and check a couple out because part of what makes film festivals so great is you can discover a hidden game and bring it to the attention of others. Full Sundance line-up announced...and it's a doozy!
In addition to the competition titles which were announced yesterday, Sundance has announced the remainder of their line-up and it includes some titles we’re already familiar with along with a huge number of premieres.

Also on the docket are two new series: Next which showcases low/no budget films and Spotlight which highlights films which festival programmers deem worthy of extra love including Enter the Void (review) and Lourdes (the trailer for which I really liked).

I’m particularly excited to see some of the titles in the New Frontier program but overall, the line-up is an impressive one but the Kristen Stewart fan in me is excited to see her turn as Joan Jett in The Runaways and I think it’s fair to say we’re all dying to see Vincenzo Natali’s hotly anticipated Splice (trailer).

In the Midnight section, Adam Green's Frozen is sounding mighty find,...

Sundance 2010 Film Lineup *Updated*
Sundance released their slate for 2010. It includes:43 documentaries on the Middle East12 films about friends who 'discover' something33 movies about people you've never heard about1 comedyHopefully the lineup this year is strong but it doesn't look that way compared to last year. Last year we had Push (Precious), that Lil Wayne documentary that never went anywhere, Mystery Team which might make my top ten, Moon, Mike Tyson documentary, Cold Souls. Just so much last January that was excellent. I hope I don't go out therer and freeze my tail off just to see...I don't know, a documentary about a former Pakistani prime minister or something silly like that. Here's the lineup so far: Premieres To showcase the diversity to contemporary independent cinema, the Sundance Film Festival Premieres section offers the latest work from American and international directors as well as world premieres of highly anticipated films. Presented by Entertainment Weekly.

Mexican actor Diego Luna's directorial debut, "Abel," will screen, as will Philip Seymour Hoffman's "Jack Goes Boating."

Michael Winterbottom has the rare distinction of having two films in...
