‘Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale’ Trailer Highlights How Badly I Miss Maggie Smith in the Final Sequel
Image
I’m not ashamed to admit that I cry and get emotional over fictional characters and their stories. So, with that being said, I can openly admit that the Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale trailer made me emotional. But not just because it’s the last ride with the Crawley family. It’s because I really miss Maggie Smith. Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, wasn’t just a character—she was Downton.

With her sharp tongue, clever comebacks, and that regal stare, Maggie Smith brought a kind of magic to every single scene she was in. But now, she’s no longer with us, and that makes it hard for me to watch Downton Abbey’s final chapter. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still excited for the last installment, because Lady Mary is giving chaos, drama, and elegance. But much like the Earl of Grantham, even I found myself asking,...

The Gilded Age Season 3 Review — Grandiose and More Ambitious Than Ever
Image
The success of The Gilded Age Season 2 opened many doors for the series. While there were concerns it could not reach the heights of Downton Abbey, HBO’s big bet proved valuable. Not only did it help raise Carrie Coon’s profile to a new audience, but it minted a dozen new stars in the process. With Julian Fellowes and Sonja Warfield getting the vote of confidence from their peers, HBO has given the show the budget to match.

The Gilded Age Season 3 Plot

The Russells continue their rise to the top of the social and economic world. Bertha (Carrie Coon) still wants her daughter Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) to marry an English duke and permanently put the family into high society. Meanwhile, George (Morgan Specter) brings his son Larry (Harry Richardson) into the business as he attempts to connect the railroads of the United States. Larry also continues his dealings...

‘Dept. Q’ Star Matthew Goode Explains Why He Won’t Return to Downton Abbey for the Best Reason
Image
Matthew Goode officially confirmed he won’t be reprising his role as Mary’s husband, Henry Talbot, in the third and final Downton Abbey movie. While many fans are sad to see him go, the actor revealed a very sensible reason why it is okay not to return.

Amid his busy schedule, the actor was also suffering from health issues, which was an added factor as to why he couldn’t make time for the filming. However, there is a more important reason, and it’s something fans would never expect.

Why Matthew Goode didn’t reprise the Downton Abbey role Matthew Goode in Downton Abbey / Credits: ITV

Matthew Goode always looks at the silver lining, and his absence in Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale was a positive thing for him. While speaking with Radio Times, he explained why he was not able to make it to the movie and...

Downton Abbey is going to make us emotional all over again. It is really the end of it all, as the third film in the series gives off the hint in its title, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. The first trailer of the film has been released, and it is clear that it will be a tear-jerking farewell to some of our favorite TV stars since 2010.

The series wrapped up in 2015 and was followed up by two films, Downton Abbey and Downton Abbey: A New Era. Midway through the series, we saw the shocking death of Dan Stevens’ Matthew Crawley, which left us devastated. It appears that the show is about to bring back those haunting memories.

Downton Abbey 3 Casting Update Confirms That One Missing Character Won't Return
Image
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finalewill have a wide theatrical release on Sept. 12, 2025, and it has just been confirmed that one major cast member from the original TV series will not be returning. After Downton Abbey season 6's finale, the saga of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants in the early 20th century continued with two movies, first 2019's Downton Abbey and then 2022's Downton Abbey: A New Era. While Mary's (Michelle Dockery) husband Henry (Matthew Goode) is in the first movie, he does not appear in the second.

Lady Mary Crawley marries Henry Talbolt in the penultimate episode of Downton Abbey, a few years after the death of her husband Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens), a relationship that was the main romance of the first half of the series. 20 Actors Who Left TV Shows Midway and Never Came Back
Image
The drama behind the camera often rivals what happens on screen, especially when an actor suddenly leaves a TV show midway. Honestly, these exits felt like an unexpected cliffhanger, throwing fans off balance as they tried to adjust to a world without their favorite character. TV shows are built on consistency, and when an actor walks away, it’s like pulling a crucial thread out of a carefully woven tapestry. One minute, they’re central to the story; the next, they’re written off with a flimsy excuse or no explanation at all.

And sometimes the departure is dramatic and headline-worthy, with whispers of behind-the-scenes feuds or creative clashes. Other times, it’s more understated, with an actor quietly stepping away to pursue new opportunities or handle personal matters. Either way, their absence leaves a noticeable void, sparking fan debates and sometimes even reshaping the trajectory of the show itself.

‘Zero Day’ Star Dan Stevens Says “Democracy Is Almost Dead”
Image
From Homeland to And Just Like That, modern television has made the loudmouth alternative-media personality such a fixture that by now it’s practically a trope.

But few inhabit the role like Dan Stevens in the Netflix political-thriller series Zero Day, which has become a hit for the streamer and star Robert De Niro since its debut last month. Playing the part of popular YouTuber Evan Green, who gets especially vocal after a major terrorist attack, Stevens, 42, emits conspiracism and sanctimony so deftly, you wonder if he’s planning a side career.

Green occupies a seat that ideally should convey news to a thirsty audience. But in a world where “what should be objective fact becomes subjective,” as co-creator Eric Newman recently told The Hollywood Reporter, the character goes the other way. He sows division and even ends up a suspect himself.

With media becoming more fragmented and distrusted even...

4 Netflix leading men who should be the next James Bond
Image
James Bond fans learned last week that the oversight of future Bond films will change hands. Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson will seemingly no longer be in charge. Instead, Amazon MGM Studios has spent $1 billion to take control.

This is not a great surprise. Amazon purchased MGM in 2022, but that did not include full control of the Bond franchise. Now, the studio can move ahead with making a new film. That means casting a new actor to play Bond as Daniel Craig has said he did not want to do the role anymore.

But who could the next Bond be? One of the frontrunners is Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The assumption is that Bond-makers will want a younger actor to take on the iconic role, and Taylor-Johnson is only 34. But should these actors well-known to Netflix viewers also be in the running?

Four actors Netflix viewers know well who could be...

Dan Stevens Reflects On His Downton Abbey Exit 12 Years Later: "Terror & Discomfort"
Image
Longtime Downton Abbey star Dan Stevens reflects on why he left the classic British series. First airing on ITV in late 2010, the historical drama, which is set in a fictional Yorkshire country estate, revolves around the aristocratic Crawley family as well as their domestic servants during the post-Edwardian era. Stevens played the role of Mathew Crawley, a leading cast member in the show up until his exit in 2012, and he was joined by other talented acts like Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Brendan Coyle and Jessica Brown Findlay.

Now, about 12 years since Stevens exited Downton Abbey, the actor looks back on his departure in a recent interview with Business Insider. The 41-year-old admits that taking the decision to leave the show at the time came with an element of discomfort and uncertainty, but he claims it’s been fun navigating the years after he decided to exit the show.

Why Did They Kill Off Matthew Crawley In Downton Abbey?
Image
The unimaginable death of Matthew Crawley (played by Dan Stevens) was as devastating to viewers as it was to the fictional family he left behind in Downton Abbey. The shocking exit of one of Downton's popular characters seemed illogical to many viewers. The leading man, who had just become a new father, had so much potential unexplored. The show's loyal viewers had many reasons to get invested in the character. And just like the car accident that claimed the Downton heir, there was little anyone could do to change Matthew Crawley's fate off-screen.

When the episode involving the death of Matthew Crawley first aired on Christmas Day in the United Kingdom, there was an outpouring from some horror-stricken viewers. Many claimed that such a tragedy had ruined their happy holiday, especially after the character welcomed a child with his wife, Lady Mary. Viewers in America were similarly stunned only a few weeks later on PBS.

Abigail 2024 Cast & Character Guide (With Secret Details & Reveals)
Image
The cast of Abigail elevates the movie's unique hybrid of a heist film and a horror movie, with strong performances from the ensemble. Abigail focuses on a group of criminals and killers who find themselves tasked with kidnapping the daughter of a powerful and wealthy man. While they're initially scared of repercussions coming from the hands of her father, the group soon realizes the full extent of the danger they're in when they realize that the young Abigail isn't what she seems.

Abigail is an impressive critical success with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 83%, and despite its lukewarm box office, Abigail's streaming success has given it new life. The gory horror film is a great blend of horror, comedy, and action, all building to one of the bloodiest (and most satisfying) climaxes of the year so far. Bolstering it all is a cast of seasoned pros and younger faces, including horror stars like Melissa Barrera.

Downton Abbey Timeline Explained: Every Season & Movie
Image
Downton Abbey's timeline follows the lives of the Crawley family from 1912 to 1928. The series itself spans from 1912 to 1925, and the two movies from 1927 to 1928, which is when Downton Abbey: A New Era is set. In England, these decades were a time of rapid changes in social structures, with the rise of the working class, decline of the aristocracy, and WWI. Over the course of six seasons and two films, Downton Abbey entwines the fictional characters' stories with the true historical events going on around them both in the UK and the wider world.

The Downton Abbey timeline begins with season 1 in 1912, just after the sinking of the Titanic. Across six seasons, Downton and its residents live through World War I, the Spanish Influenza pandemic, structural economic shifts, and rapid social changes. The successful 2019 Downton Abbey movie takes place shortly after the events of the series, in 1927, and Downton Abbey: A New Era...

Maggie Smith is being remembered by members of the Wizarding World and Downton Abbey families following her death at the age of 89. The fan-favorite actor was best known in her later career for playing Professor Minerva McGonagall in all eight Harry Potter films and Violet Crawley in the ITV series Downton Abbey and its two feature-length sequels.

Dan Stevens Speculates His 'Solar Opposites' Character's Letterboxd Top 4
Image
Dan Stevens may have risen to fame from his role as Matthew Crawley on Downton Abbey, but he became even more well-known for his work in genre fare and big-budget blockbusters such as The Guest, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, and the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast. After co-creator Justin Roiland was fired from Solar Opposites in early 2023, many were wondering who would become the new voice of the series' snarky and often maniacal alien Korvo. Stevens was announced to be taking over the role only two months before Season 4, and breathed new life into the character, making the voice his own instead of trying to replicate what Roiland did before.

Dan Stevens on Creativity, Comedy, and That Good Morning Britain Moment…
Image
Dan Stevens is a busy man. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire landed in theaters at the end of March, where Stevens played charming leading man Trapper, then anarchic horror Abigail arrived hot on its heels in April. Next up, August brings strange horror/sci-fi Cuckoo, which sees Stevens playing a deranged scientist. Between press tours, festivals, and new projects, he’s got a lot going on. And we get the sense he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Describing himself as an “experience hound,” Stevens is a man who thrives on challenges. He began his career in theater, made it big as tragic heartthrob Matthew Crawley in British drama Downton Abbey, and has genre-hopped ever since, from action-thriller The Guest, to playing Sir Lancelot in family fun Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. Abigail's Biggest Horror Surprise Was Kept Out Of Every Trailer
Image
Warning: This article contains a massive spoiler for "Abigail."

Taste is obviously subjective, but for my money, "Abigail" is one of the best horror movies of 2024. It's been a few years since we've had a truly great vampire movie, and this part-crime thriller, part-comedy, part-gothic horror, part-gorefest has set the bar for vampire films in the 2020s. A group of criminals — Melissa Barrera as Joey, Dan Stevens as Frank, Kathryn Newton as Sammy, William Catlett as Rickles, Kevin Durand as Peter, and Angus Cloud as Dean — are tasked with kidnapping Abigail (Alisha Weir) and holding her for ransom, believing her rich father will happily trade funds for the safekeeping of his baby girl. Unfortunately for the group, Abigail is a vampire, and this kidnapping plot is a trap to allow her some fun before devouring them all in a gigantic feast.

Throughout "Abigail," the kidnappers and the titular vamp herself often reference her wealthy,...

Downton Abbey: Did Patrick Actually Survive the Titanic?

Quick Links Who Was Patrick Crawley on Downton Abbey? How Patrick Crawley Allegedly Survived the Titanic Disaster Was Downton Abbey's Patrick Gordon Really Patrick Crawley? Why Downton Abbey Included the Patrick Crawley Storyline Downton Abbey may look like a light-hearted drama on the surface, but it contains a gripping mystery regarding one character's supposed identity. The mystery concerning Patrick stretched all the way back to the events that kicked off the show and nearly changed the series' trajectory. While the characters involved eventually moved on and put the mystery to rest, Downtown Abbey never answered the glaring question on viewers' minds: Was Patrick Gordon telling the truth about his real identity?

Most who have seen, or even heard of, Downton Abbey probably think of it as a mild-mannered period drama and not a mystery. The series captured an era of rapid change at the beginning of the 20th century...

Downton Abbey: 10 Best Romantic Relationships
Image
Downton Abbey enmeshed drama, historical events, and romance with each other in a way that few other television shows could. The story of the Grantham family and their lives after they lost their heirs in the Titanic disaster captivated fans, especially because the new and enigmatic Matthew Crawley stepped into the aristocracy out of nowhere.

However, this strange situation was softened massively by the romance of Downton Abbey. Lady Mary, Lady Sybil, and Lady Edith had some magical relationships throughout the show, as did the staff of the Estate, who lived downstairs. These slow-burn romances kept fans coming back for more, but some were better than others.

Solar Opposites Producer Explains Why They Gave Korvo Such a Different Voice
Image
As Solar Opposites ushers in Dan Stevens as the voice of Korvo, one of the show's producers Sydney Ryan explained why the creative team opted to change the character's vocals in such a major way.

Speaking with ComicBook, Ryan noted that the series wanted to avoid creating an imitation of previous voice actor Justin Roiland, electing to rather start fresh. "We didn't want to match the previous voice and felt like it would come across like we were doing a cover song," the producer said. They went on to explain that the inherent wackiness of Solar Opposites allowed Stevens to take over and really make Korvo his own without raising too many eyebrows. "We thought it would be funny to use this in-show method to explain the voice change. Even with a big shift, we still wanted to preserve the humor and emotional aspects that we've built for Korvo over the years.

10 Major TV Characters That Suffered Disappointing Deaths
Image
Although fans are used to seeing their favorite characters depart the series (particularly since actors like to explore other opportunities), that doesn't mean they aren't disappointed when the writers decide to kill them off. It's always going to be a sad day for fans when an actor announces that they have decided to leave a show after so many years - especially if viewers have either watched them grow into empowering role models or they have become the heart and soul of the story. Their presence can also comfort viewers as their personalities are often relatable and bring about a couple of laughs.

While viewers often hope that the door is left open (as this means there is a chance they can see them again), they do understand that the writers have to kill off characters for the sake of the story. However, what usually disappoints them is how the writers execute these deaths.

Mary Mack, Christina Hendricks, Kieran Culkin, and Christopher Meloni also join the cast, bringing a talented and diverse range of actors to the new season of Solar Opposites.

The Solar Opposites season 4 cast brings back some of the biggest names from the animated series, but there is also one major change that shakes up the entire show. Created by Rick and Morty co-creators Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan, the show is about aliens who ended up landing on Earth after their home planet was destroyed by an asteroid. These aliens then set up on Earth, pretending to be humans and fit in,...

Dan Stevens Replaces Justin Roiland in Solar Opposites
Image
Hulu announced that Dan Stevens has replaced Justin Roiland as the voice actor for Korvo in Solar Opposites Season 4.

The streamer unveiled the casting change with a new clip from Solar Opposites, showing Korvo being pierced in the throat by a dart. After getting zapped by the voice-fixing ray, Korvo -- now voiced by Stevens -- tells his alien comrades to stop messing around and that they will be late for work. The first look ends with some meta-commentary on the Korvo recast. Jesse asks if Korvo is going to sound different for the rest of the series with Yumyulack responding that he sounds basically the same and that nobody will even notice the change.

Cabinet Of Curiosities: The Outside Cast & Character Guide
Image
Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities boasts a cast of talented actors in its fourth episode, “The Outside” – here’s the cast and who they play in the horror anthology series’ episode 4. Released on Netflix on October 26, “The Outside” is based on Emily Carroll’s webcomic “Some Other Animal’s Meat." Unlike other Cabinet of Curiosities episodes that might be considered more typical horror fare for the themes they explore, “The Outside” starts off somewhat peculiarly as it focuses on its protagonist’s self-confidence regarding her looks and social standing at the bank where she works.

Directed by The Bad Batch’s Ana Lily Amirpour, Cabinet of Curiosities episode 4 follows Stacey as she tries on a strange lotion called Alo Glo to gain membership in her coworkers' inner circle. While her coworkers didn’t seem to have any side effects from their Alo Glo use, Stacey does. Here’s...

Why Laura Carmichael Couldn't Say No To Reprising Her Downton Abbey Role
Image
When you look at the sprawling ensemble that is "Downton Abbey," it can be easy to lose track of all of these characters, especially when you're having to alternate between the aristocratic Crawley family and their downstairs staff. But series creator/writer Julian Fellowes ("The Gilded Age") has done a great job of giving both clusters equal attention, as the show hops from one character's plotline to the next. Of course, the breadth of a television show with six seasons allows ample time to make sure no one gets lost in the shuffle.

As the PBS series made the transition to the big screen in 2019 with "Downton Abbey: The Motion Picture," and again this year with "Downton Abbey: A New Era," I wondered if Fellowes would be able to give as much attention to Maggie Smith's Dowager Countess, while also allowing characters like Rob James-Collier's Thomas Barrow enough...

The captivating melodrama of "Downton Abbey" would be but window dressing without its spectacular ensemble to bring these characters to life. Even when some favorites ended up leaving the show, series creator/writer Julian Fellowes ("The Gilded Age") always had someone interesting to add to the roster. For every Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens) or Lady Sybil (Jessica Brown Findlay), there was an Andy (Michael Fox) or Lady Rose (Lily James) to round out the cast. Even if you look the upstairs and downstairs crew within their own groups, in each you'll find a wealth of...

With "Downton Abbey: A New Era" set to open in theaters nationwide soon, fans of the British television series-turned-films are excited to see the tremendous ensemble back on the screen. When you have a cast this talented, people are likely to form attachments with some of their favorite characters, and in the world of "Downton Abbey," there's plenty to choose from. ‘Godzilla vs. Kong 2’: Dan Stevens Reunites With ‘The Guest’ Director Adam Wingard On Legendary Sequel
Image
Exclusive: Marking the first major role to be cast in the upcoming sequel, Dan Stevens is set to lead the next installment of Legendary’s Monsterverse film franchise, a follow-up to last year’s Godzilla vs. Kong. Adam Wingard, who helmed the first film, is returning to direct, with production is slated to begin this summer in Australia.

Per usual, plot details are being kept under wraps, other than following the film’s larger-than-life monsters and then preparing for their next battle against each other. Godzilla vs. Kong helped get audiences back in theaters as it became the second film of the Covid era to cross the 100 million mark at the domestic box office en route to 468 million globally. The number is impressive as it also bowed day-and-date on HBO Max.

As for Stevens, while 2017’s live-action Beauty and the Beast was his first major tentpole lead, the veteran actor...

No Lawyer Talk: Dan Stevens Turned Down Meal With John Dean Ahead Of Playing Him In Watergate Drama ‘Gaslit’
Image
Dan Stevens decided not to sit down with John Dean, Republican lawyer in the Watergate era turned news pundit and circuit speaker, ahead of playing him in the Starz drama Gaslit.

Stevens has told the British press that he was initially keen to sit down with Dean, who still polarises opinion for his role in the Nixon-period scandal, but the actor changed his mind once word got out of the planned meeting.

“I was keen to sit down with him,” Stevens told the Guardian. “Then I was told I’d have to speak with Universal’s lawyers in advance, which I didn’t want to do; I didn’t think it would make the meal taste particularly nice.”

Stevens stars alongside Julia Roberts and an unrecognisable Sean Penn in the five-part series, based on the ‘Slow Burn’ podcast, which tells the story of Watergate, but from the fresh perspective of...

All the Stars Who've Exited TV Shows in 2022
Elizabeth McGovern, Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Brendan Coyle, Joanne Froggatt, Penelope Wilton, Allen Leech, Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael, Lily James, Fifi Hart, and Oliver Barker in Downton Abbey (2010)
Saying goodbye to your favorite TV character is always bittersweet. On one hand, it can be heartbreaking to see a beloved character leave. On the other, a TV star's departure can be one of the best moments in a series, with the writers building tension as a character prepares to bid a final farewell. Exits often mean that change and fresh stories are coming to a show. Case in point (major Downton Abbey spoilers ahead but also why haven't you watched yet?): Dan Stevens' character, Matthew Crawley, died in a fiery car crash just hours after Mary (Michelle Dockery) gave birth to a son on Downton Abbey. Though it was a truly devastating end to their love story,...

‘I’m Your Man’ director Maria Schrader on casting Dan Stevens in her German comedy
Image
Back in 1964, CBS premiered the sci-fi rom com “My Living Doll” in which a bachelor psychiatrist (Bob Cummings) is asked to take care of a beautiful prototype android (Julie Newmar) because her creator doesn’t want the robot to fall in the hands of the Army. The shrink decides to teach his stunning but naïve charge how to be the perfect woman: a pre-women’s lib female does what she is told and never talks back to him. That premise wouldn’t fly these days especially in the wake of the #MeToo era. Even then the series only lasted one season. The tables are turned in the sophisticated, thought-provoking rom-com “I’m Your Man,” Germany’s official entry for Best International Feature at the Oscars.

Directed by Maria Schrader and starring Maren Eggert and Dan Stevens, “I’m Your Man” revolves around a bright young woman, unlucky in love and working at a financially strapped museum,...

Dan Stevens To Voice Prince Charles & Prince Philip In HBO Max Royal Family Animated Series ‘The Prince’
Image
Exclusive: Downton Abbey alum Dan Stevens has joined the voice cast of HBO Max animated series The Prince as both Prince Charles and Price Philip.

The Prince, written and executive produced by Gary Janetti, is a biting, satirical look at the life of Prince George of Cambridge as he navigates the trials and tribulations of being a royal child. The youngest heir to the British throne welcomed Stevens as the voices of his grandfather and great-grandfather.

The Prince TV series and the Instagram account that spawned it, both from Janetti, are a satire of British royals through the eyes of a young Prince George, eldest child of Prince William and Princess Kate. Because his succession isn’t coming any time soon, each episode George will see finding his path in life as a young prince in modern times – from the 775 rooms of Buckingham Palace to his family’s sea of...

‘The Rental’ Review: When a Getaway Weekend Gets Gruesome
Image
A diabolically clever script by actor-turned-director Dave Franco and mumblecore pioneer Joe Swanberg, The Rental has a simple premise: Take two couples with volatile sexual dynamics, have them rent an AirBNB for a weekend on the rugged Oregon coast, mix in secret cameras and the presence of a peeping psycho, and spike the steadily-building suspense with psychological insights. Yes, this is well-covered territory — see the recent You Should Have Left, which didn’t work at all. Yet Franco’s behind-the-cameras debut is sure to strike a chord for Covid-trapped audiences.

Dan Stevens Says He Didn’t Have A Big Game Plan After Leaving Downton Abbey
Downton Abbey fans were shocked when Dan Stevens announced he was leaving the hit period drama after just two seasons, with his character Matthew Crawley being killed off – via a shock car crash – in a Christmas special. Some wondered at the time if Stevens was making the right move in leaving the show that made his career, but the actor has proved that he definitely did as he’s since found success in Hollywood.

In a new interview with Collider, to talk about his role in Netflix’s recent comedy movie Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, Stevens opened up about the immediate aftermath of saying goodbye to Downton and what led him to up sticks and move to the States. Part of the reason was because of the limited choice of roles that were coming his way in the UK.

WB Reportedly Eyeing Downton Abbey Star To Play Constantine In Dceu
