The Reagans Are a Distant Memory As Boston Blue Rounds Out Impressive Cast
Image
Boston Blue has been one of the more controversial spinoffs in recent memory.

The reason? The prevalent Reagan family was the undeniable draw on Blue Bloods.

Watching the many layers of the different factions of the family set the series apart from most of the other procedurals on CBS.

(Courtesy of CBS)

There were many unhappy fans when news broke that only Donnie Wahlberg would headline the sequel series.

He’s a beloved actor, and his character, Danny Reagan, has a legion of supporters; however, questions have been raised about whether he can anchor a show without the rest of the Blue Bloods ensemble.

(CBS/Michael Parmalee)

There’s every reason to believe that Boston Blue will command a healthy audience because of Danny being the anchor to the original series.

Boston Blue' Is Becoming a Cast of TV All-Stars as a 'Black-Ish' Alum Joins the 'Blue Bloods' Spin-Off
Image
Marcus Scribner is the latest actor to join the upcoming Blue Bloods spin-off, Boston Blue. Variety reports that the Black-ish star will play Jonah Silver, a member of the Silver family, many of whom have been cast. The character's description hints at a dedicated lawman, much like other family members. He is "the youngest member of the Silver family and is in law enforcement like his mother and sisters, each of whom is formidable in their own ways," reads the official character description. "Always the cool kid growing up, Jonah carries himself with confidence and swagger in all situations, so he’s naturally frustrated at being a rookie cop on the sidelines of the city’s biggest investigations."

The Silver family tree consists of Mae Silver, Jonah's mother, who works as a district attorney. Gloria Ruben was cast in the role. Ernie Hudson plays Edwin Peters, Jonah's grandfather, who is a reverend.

The 10 Worst The Walking Dead Episodes, Ranked
Image
First, let's get one thing straight -- "The Walking Dead" is a defining work of 2010s entertainment and one of the greatest television shows of all time. It debuted on AMC at the start of the decade, a time in which shows like "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad" were positioning the network as the next HBO. But those two shows, which began years before "The Walking Dead," ended long before it as well.

The latter show continued to feed on a fanbase that itself was forced to live off of scraps -- "bonus" episodes, upsetting deaths used as mere shock value, and, oh God, so many cliffhangers. This cycle continued until the show effectively died -- then, appropriately, continued a few seasons more. It sprouted several spin-offs (which you have to watch in the correct order), and the creators even threatened to produce movies like fungus on a zombified corpse!

Psyche actress Maggie Lawson to join Donnie Wahlberg's Boston Blue
Image
Donnie Wahlberg’s newest spinoff of his CBS show Blue Bloods continues to get bigger as a new casting announcement was made. Psyche actress Maggie Lawson will also be joining the series, which follows Wahlberg’s character, Danny Reagan.

For 14 seasons, Danny worked the streets of New York as a detective, working to make a name for himself while also being under the legacy of his family’s law enforcement background. Now, Boston Blue will follow him as he makes the move to Boston to work in their police department.

There, he will work with Detective Lena Silver, played by Sonequa Martin-Green. Like Reagan, she also comes from a family background in law enforcement, as per Deadline. There are plenty of similarities between the Reagans and the Silvers, with one difference between the roles of the patriarch.

In Lawson's case, she was recently announced to star as Sarah Silver, who...

‘She Dances’ Review: Steve Zahn and Daughter Audrey Share a Sweet Pas de Deux
Image
There are probably quite a few proud fathers who would love to make a mainstream tribute to their own offspring. Few of them, however, have the resources — or talents — to handle it as well as Steve Zahn does with “She Dances.”

Zahn co-wrote, produced and stars with his dancer daughter Audrey in this lovely drama about, well, a proud father and his dancer daughter. But before we even see his perpetually fretting Jason, we meet her high school senior Claire. Claire and her mom Deb (Rosemarie DeWitt) are mildly panicked, because an emergency has come up and Deb can’t accompany Claire to her last-ever dance competition. It’s out of state and she needs a guardian, so … Jason it is. Claire wants nothing to do with her estranged father, and we can understand why when she and Deb call over to the depressing apartment where he lives. True to form,...

Despite ’Star Trek: Discovery’s Early Cancellation, Sonequa Martin-Green Doesn’t Have “Unfinished Business” With Burnham
Image
Star Trek: Discovery's five-year mission came to an end on Paramount+ last year, and series star Sonequa Martin-Green hung up her combadge after her character, Michael Burnham, completed her five-season journey from convict to captain. Although she expected a longer ride, she felt the series' conclusion put a fitting end to Burnham's journey. The My Dead Friend Zoe star talked about her experience with the show's conclusion in a recent interview with ScreenRant.

Green initially expected the series to run longer than it actually did. Says Green, "...in the very beginning, it did seem like it was going to be a six-season situation because the contract with Pinewood Studios was for six years, and there were some other things. But we actually assumed that it would go for seven [seasons], so it was a bit of a shocker. TV has completely changed, though, and I always say that because it's a totally different landscape.

It’s been a year since Star Trek: Discoveryended its five-year mission on Paramount+, but that isn’t stopping its star from thinking about the future of her character. Sonequa Martin-Green, who played Commander and then Captain Michael Burnham on Discovery, is dishing about which Star Trek captain she’d like to share the screen with in the future.

During a Star Trek panel at Fan Expo Dallas, Martin-Green told ScreenRant’s Joel Deckelmeier that she had given some thought to which Trek captain she’d like to see her Michael Burnham character cross over with. ‘Blue Bloods’ Gets One Final Nostalgic Streaming Push Before Donnie Wahlberg’s ‘Boston Blue’ Spin-Off
Image
It’s been almost six months since Blue Bloods aired its series finale, but fans still aren’t quite ready to say goodbye to the hit procedural show. Blue Bloods was canceled after its 14th season on CBS, and although fans still have the spin-off series, Boston Blue, to look forward to, it undoubtedly won’t be the same. However, to prepare for Boston Blue, it seems fans have begun rewatching the original Blue Bloods series, which has helped it jump back into the Paramount+ top 10, sitting at #10 at the time of writing. It’s not common for shows that have been off the air as long as Blue Bloods to find streaming success, so this is a testament to the dedicated fan base the show has. It first aired in 2010.

Star Trek: Discovery's Sonequa Martin-Green Reveals Which Previous Captains She Hopes To Crossover With
Image
Sonequa Martin-Green has hopes for Star Trek: Discovery's Captain Michael Burnham to someday cross over with other Star Trek Captains, naming two specific legendary fellow Star Trek series leads. Martin-Green led Star Trek: Discovery for five seasons, with Michael Burnham earning her long-awaited promotion to Captain of the USS Discovery at the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 3. This put Burnham among the lofty stratosphere of Star Trek's greatest Captains.

Speaking to ScreenRant's Joe Deckelmeier at Fan Expo Dallas Star Trek panel, Sonequa Martin-Green indulged the fantasy of Captain Burnham meeting other Star Trek Captains. Martin-Green's choices of who Burnham should cross over with makes sense since, like Michael, they are also pioneering Captains in the Star Trek franchise. Of course, Sonequa also would love for Burnham to go on a mission with all of Star Trek's Captains. Check out Martin-Green's quote below:

Psych Alum Maggie Lawson to Lead CBS’s Boston Blue
Maggie Lawson
CBS has cast Maggie Lawson (Psych) as Superintendent Sarah Silver in Boston Blue, the straight-to-series police drama that will extend the Blue Bloods universe into the 2025-26 season. The new show follows Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) after he leaves the NYPD for the Boston Police Department, pairing him with Detective Lena Peters, played by Star Trek: Discovery lead Sonequa Martin-Green. Ernie Hudson joins the ensemble as Peters’ grandfather, anchoring the story in a multigenerational policing family that mirrors the original franchise’s Reagan clan.

CBS ordered the project on 18 February, two months after Blue Bloods signed off from primetime, citing “unmet audience demand” for a successor. Network schedules released in May reserve a Friday slot for Boston Blue beginning this fall, though internal planning lists January launch flexibility if post-production tightens. Writers-producers Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis—veterans of L.A.’s Finest—are steering the pilot block, with longtime...

‘Boston Blue’ Just Added a ‘Psych’ Star to Its Roster
Image
The inner circle of Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan is getting a little bit bigger today with the announcement of another character cast in Boston Blue. Deadline reports that Psych alum, Maggie Lawson, is set to join the Blue Bloods offshoot as Sarah Silver, the Superintendent of the Boston Police Department — which certainly sounds like she’ll be Danny’s new boss. The news of Lawson’s involvement comes shortly after two other iconic actors — Ernie Hudson and Sonequa Martin-Green — were announced to join ranks in the CBS procedural that’s due for its premiere in January.

Back in the original series, Wahlberg’s detective found himself as a member of a prominent law enforcement family, but this time around, he’ll be the odd man out. That family tree is expanding branch by branch, with the reveal that Lawson’s Sarah Silver is the stepsister to Martin-Green’s Detective Lena Silver,...

Psych fans may want to tune in to Boston Blue, the upcoming offshoot to the TV series Blue Bloods. It was previously reported that Donnie Wahlberg will return in the new series, but as he relocates to Boston, he'll be joined by an all-new ensemble cast of co-stars.

How Leonard Nimoy's Spock Helped One Star Trek: Discovery Star Understand Their Character Before Stepping Onto The Set
Image
Leonard Nimoy's Spock from Star Trek: The Original Series helped Star Trek: Discovery's Sonequa Martin-Green understand their own character. One of Discovery's strongest links back to Star Trek: The Original Series was that Star Trek: Discovery's lead character, Michael Burnham, was the adoptive sister of Spock (Ethan Peck). After Michael Burnham's parents were killed by Klingons when she was 10 years old, Spock's parents, Sarek (James Frain) and Amanda Grayson (Mia Kirshner), took in the orphaned Michael and raised her on Vulcan.

At her FanExpo Dallas Star Trek panel, Sonequa Martin-Green talked to ScreenRant's Joe Deckelmeier about history with Star Trek: The Original Series, and how studying Nimoy's performance as Spock helped her prepare for playing Michael Burnham as Spock's human sister in Star Trek: Discovery. Read Sonequa's quote below:

Sonequa Martin-Green: My entry point was Star Trek: Discovery. I mean, I knew what Star Trek was growing up.

Despite Expecting Star Trek: Discovery To Last 7 Seasons, Sonequa Martin-Green Doesn't Have "Unfinished Business" With Burnham
Image
Sonequa Martin-Green doesn't have "unfinished business" with Captain Michael Burnham after Star Trek: Discovery ended with season 5. The first Star Trek on Paramount+ series, Star Trek: Discovery's final episode aired in May 2024 after Paramount+'s surprise decision to end the show in 2023. Star Trek: Discovery's series finale, "Life Itself," was an extended episode that concluded with a special coda revealing the fate of Admiral Michael Burnham and the USS Discovery decades later.

Speaking to ScreenRant's Joe Deckelmeier at her Fan Expo Dallas Star Trek panel, Sonequa Martin-Green discussed how long producers and the cast expected Star Trek: Discovery to run for, and Sonequa reveals she doesn't feel like she has "unfinished business" with playing Captain Michael Burnham. Read Sonequa's quote below:

ScreenRant: Burnham got her happy ending, but I know that this was supposed to run six seasons. Is there still unfinished business that you have, or...

Star Trek & The Walking Dead Star Explains How Each Franchise's Character Would Fare In Each Other's Universe
Image
Sonequa Martin-Green believes that one of her characters would thrive in both The Walking Dead and Star Trek. Martin-Green played Michael Burnham in Star Trek: Discovery from 2017 to 2024, which is the role that she is arguably best known for. She was also a member of The Walking Dead's cast, however, as she played Sasha Williams from 2012 to 2018. While those are her two most prominent portrayals, she additionally appeared in Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021), My Dead Friend Zoe (2024), and ABC's Once Upon a Time.

While speaking with ScreenRant's Joe Deckelmeier during her Star Trek panel at FanExpo Dallas, Martin-Green considered the legacy of her Star Trek and Walking Dead roles. In particular, Decklemeier prompted her to ponder how the two characters would fare in the other's universe. While Martin-Green admitted that she had "never heard that question before", she quickly realized that Michael would be the most successful in the crossover,...

9 sci-fi/fantasy shows that are only for genre superfans

Looking for a new sci-fi/fantasy show to binge? You can't go wrong with any of these nine series, which run the gamut from brand new to tried and true:

Rosamund Pike (Moiraine Damodred), Josha Stradowski (Rand al’Thor) in The Wheel of Time season 3. Image: Prime Video. The Wheel of Time

Let's get the bad news out of the way first...The Wheel of Time has been cancelled, but that doesn't mean it's not deserving of being on our list. Based on the 14 book-series by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, The Wheel of Time books walked so that the Song of Ice and Fire books could run.

If we had to explain this fantasy epic in full, we'd be here all day. It's a magical story about a group of unassuming country kids — Rand al'Thor, Mat Cauthon, Perrin Aybara, Egwene al'Vere and Nynaeve al'Meara — taken on a world-spanning journey...

Blue Bloods Spinoff Boston Blue Lands Its Director & EP For Premiere Episode
Image
The Blue Bloods spinoff Boston Bluehas officially found its director and executive producer for the premiere episode, according to Deadline. The production has tapped Anthony Hemingway to step into the director's chair for at least the premiere episode, as well as serve as EP. The Boston Blue spinoff of Blue Bloods was set back in February when the procedural-heavy CBS gave it a straight-to-series order. As long suspected, Boston Blue was confirmed to be a spinoff following Donny Wahlberg's detective Danny Reagan, who will find himself taking a job with the Boston Pd.

The spinoff officially establishes the Blue Bloods universe, with potential plans for further tie-in shows, meaning that Boston Blue, which will take over Blue Bloods' Friday night timeslot, has to perform and prove that there are legs to the universe, even if the whole Reagan family is no longer together. Picking Anthony Hemingway to pilot the premiere...
