NBC had high hopes for The Michael J Fox Show when they committed to 22 episodes without even seeing a pilot. A year later, the sitcom's been cancelled.
Loosely mirroring Fox's own journey, The Michael J. Fox Show revolves around a beloved TV news anchor (Fox) who stepped away from his career to focus on his family and his health after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. The rest of the cast includes Betsy Brandt, Conor Romero, Juliette Goglia, Katie Finneran, Wendell Pierce, Ana Nogueira, and Jack Gore.
Last fall, the show debuted well (by current NBC sitcom standards) but the ratings sank with each subsequent week. The network kept it on the air despite truly terrible ratings. The network maintained that they believed in the show but ultimately pulled it after 15 episodes.

Michael J. Fox has new television "parents," and they probably look pretty familiar.
Almost 40 years after they starred in the movie "11 Harrowhouse," Candice Bergen and Charles Grodin reunited as Beth and Steve Henry in "Thanksgiving," Thursday's (Nov. 21) seasonal episode of NBC's "The Michael J. Fox Show." And the couple's presence made things ... well, interesting for Mike (Fox) and others.
His sister Leigh (Katie Finneran) is especially on edge, feeling she's the target of her mother's constant criticism. To save humiliation, she never revealed she didn't go to Portland with a boyfriend as planned, since they'd broken up before the move -- and she decides to fly to Atlanta before her parents arrive.
Oops: The parents show up six hours earlier than scheduled. The bear hug Mike gets from his overenthusiastic dad is offset by his more reserved mom's dry greeting to Leigh, who doesn't quite make it as she tries...

How much should a father try to steer his offspring's life?
Such was the question for Mike (Fox) in Thursday's episode of NBC's "The Michael J. Fox Show," with college-dropout son Ian (Conor Romero) taking his cue from the tale's subtitle. He plans to return to his high school for "Homecoming" ... along with his girlfriend from those days, the unseen Reese, making Mike increasingly resolute that Ian should go back to college.
Ian's get-rich-quick schemes suggest a return to higher education isn't on his radar, his latest being selling clothes at Today's Man. "I'm just worried he's not living up to his potential," Mike laments. Annie (Betsy Brandt) suggests Ian just might end up "the next Mark Zuckerberg," but Mike remains skeptical.
He has to admit he's impressed upon overhearing Ian drive a hard bargain ("I ought to get you on the phone with Time Warner," opines Mike), only to...

Michael J. Fox returns to NBC tonight on a brand new sitcom -- not surprisingly called The Michael J. Fox Show. He's had two long-running and successful sitcoms -- Family Ties and Spin City -- but will this one be ratings hit as well? Is it worth watching?
The Michael J. Fox revolves around Mike Henry (Fox), a popular New York news anchor who stepped out of the limelight five years ago after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Now, he thinks it might be a good time to go back to work. His old boss sees his return as a ratings-getter and his family is happy to get him out of the house. The rest of the cast includes Betsy Brandt, Conor Romero, Juliette Goglia, Katie Finneran, Wendell Pierce, Ana Nogueira, and Jack Gore.
Sound interesting? Here's what some of the critics are saying:...

There’s a point in Thursday’s premiere of The Michael J. Fox Show (9/8c) where Fox, as former local news anchor Mike Henry, contemplates a return to the medium he left after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease years before.
“What if I’m not the guy they remember?” he uncertainly asks wife Annie (played beautifully by Breaking Bad‘s Betsy Brandt), the line an obvious nod to Fox’s own sitcom comeback.
It’s a valid concern. Fox was beloved as Family Ties‘ Alex P. Keaton and Spin City‘s Mike Flaherty… but hasn’t carried a series...

Chicago – Seriously, if “The Michael J. Fox Show” doesn’t connect with NBC’s target audience, they might as well give up. Yes, the show could use a stronger lead-in but it pairs well with “Parenthood,” also returning tomorrow night, September 26, 2013, and it’s the most straight-up likable new sitcom of the season. The first episode is a bit rocky and overly self-referential but it settles in nicely over the next two and already looks like it could be on for years.

Michael J. Fox's upcoming NBC series has begun fleshing out Fox's on screen family and cast Katie Finneran as his sister and Conor Romero and Jack Goor as two of his children.
The as-yet-untitled series has a 22-episode commitment and will launch in the fall. It's a single camera comedy partly inspired by Fox's real life and stars the five-time Emmy winner as Mike Burnaby, a New York City newscaster who goes back to work and is forced to juggle his family, career and Parkinson's disease.
Two-time Tony winner Finneran ("Noises Off," "Promises, Promises") will play his unemployed, self-absorbed, single sister. Finneran also starred on Fox's "I Hate My Teenage Daughter" and "Wonderfalls."
Romero is set as Burnaby's college-dropout older son and Goor as Burnaby's 7-year-old youngest child.
"Treme" star Wendell Pierce is already part of the cast as Burnaby's boss.
