Director Angga Dwimas Sasongko champions Indonesian cinema with award-winning urban movies.
Renowned for his depiction of contemporary urban Indonesia, Sasongko is one of the country's most respected award-winning film directors. In 2008, he put up his own film production company, Visinema Pictures, which has churned out outstanding work. Together with his wife, Anggia Kharisma, as a producer, Sasongko has churned many award-winning movies.
Among their first projects was We Are Moluccans (2014). Focusing on a former soccer player who wants to save the children in his village from religious conflict in Ambon, the movie received a Citra Award for Best Picture at the 2014 Indonesian Film Festival (IFF). Angga was the youngest producer to win such an award. This year, its children's movie Nussa received Best Animation at IFF. The win was foreshadowed by Nussa's win as the Best Short Animation at 2019 IFF when it began as a web series.
Next, Sasongko's movie Letters from Prague (2016) was Indonesia's official entry for the Academy Awards. He was also the first in his country to collaborate with Fox International Production for his movie 212 Warrior (2018) in 2018.
Under Visinema, last year he started a pay-per-view movie platform called Bioskop Online to support Indonesian filmmakers and allow more to have access to their work. The platform has more than 700.000 subscribers. There is also VCampus, an e-learning platform circa 2019, to provide more content and discussion around filmmaking. Sasongko studied at the University of Indonesia, majoring in Political Science.
