Exclusive: Patton Oswalt has joined Oscar-qualified short film Sardinia as executive producer, along with his wife, actress Meredith Salenger.
The dark satirical short, written and directed by Paul Kowalski (Paper Tiger), stars Philip Ettinger as a deeply serious man battling a deadly laughing plague alongside Emmy winner Martha Plimpton. Olek Krupa, Breeda Wool and Sorel Carradine also star.
“Sardinia takes less than twenty minutes of your life to watch, but then takes up days and weeks of your brain-space when you’re done. It’s that rich, that stinging, that deep,” Oswalt said in a statement. “What Paul Kowalski does, with equal measures of hilarity and horror, is show the world go quickly off-kilter—and the subsequent ‘correction’ to ‘normality’ makes this worse. In Coralie Fargeat’s body horror shocker The Substance, Demi Moore stars as Elisabeth Sparkle, a former A-lister who is unceremoniously fired from her fitness TV show by a loathsome studio boss, played by Dennis Quaid. Feeling defeated, Sparkle can’t resist the draw of an experimental new drug called that promises to reveal a younger and even better version of herself.
If you’ve seen the trailer, then you know what happens next: Sparkle takes the leap, injects herself with the mysterious liquid and literally births the new and improved Elizabeth Sparkle — known as Sue and played by Margaret Qualley — out of her spinal cord. The only rule for the body swap is that they must spend one week in one body and one week in the other with no exceptions. Needless to say, drama and shocks unfold in quick succession.

On August 9, 2017, a TV show premiered with two huge names attached — Stephen King (one of the most successful writers alive) and David E. Kelley (one of the most successful TV creators alive) — and no one saw it. That show? Mr. Mercedes, an adaptation of King’s 2014 novel, the first in a trilogy about a detective named Bill Hodges and the psychopath that got away. But while your mileage may vary when it comes to the book — and the work of Kelley, who created shows like The Practice and Ally McBeal — neither of them are to blame. The problem was that it premiered on the Audience Network, a pay channel owned by AT&T that nobody knew how to find.
After the Audience Network folded in 2020, Mr. Mercedes, which somehow managed to get three full seasons, rolled over to Peacock. A good thing, too, as it’s got a cast to die for — Brendan Gleeson,...

Through two episodes, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live has proven to be just what the long-running zombie franchise needed to recalibrate.
A big part of the show’s success is its ability to fill in the gaps about what happened to Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) after they departed the main series several years ago.

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live Episode 2
Things have come a long way since The Walking Dead wasn’t allowed to drop the f-word at a climactic moment during Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and company’s confinement in a boxcar by the people of Terminus.
Now it seems like every episode features the kind of language that made NYPD Blue one of the most notorious shows on television, albeit without the nudity. Tongues are freer now, and standards have changed now that AMC is competing with prestige dramas on HBO and Showtime, not network television. Certainly, it’s fitting for a gritty show like The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live to indulge in language, because these are people who have survived a decade-plus of life after the end of the world. Shrinking violets need not apply; given that...

This post contains spoilers for "The Walking Dead" franchise.
In a brutal nod to the "Walking Dead" comics, "The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live" opened with Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) chopping off and cauterizing his arm in an attempt to escape from the Crm (Civic Republic Military). Unfortunately, all his agony was for nothing, as he's promptly recaptured. After Lieutenant Colonel Donald Okafor (Craig Tate) enlists Rick for a secret mission, there's some bizarre talk about the Crm dividing survivors into As and Bs — they plan to kill the As (determined folks with leadership abilities who can survive on their own) and cater to the Bs (the average survivor who will blindly follow orders to stay alive). Being branded as an A, Rick silently plans to escape and reunite with Michonne (Danai Gurira), but is unable to do so, despite his best efforts.

Plot: The love story between Rick and Michonne. Changed by a world that is constantly changing, will they find themselves in a war against the living or will they discover that they too are The Walking Dead?
Review: It is hard to believe that it has been fourteen years since The Walking Dead debuted, changing the landscape of zombies on television as well as comic book adaptations on the small screen. With Dead City and Daryl Dixon having debuted last year, fans have found the spin-offs to be a mixed bag. “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” presents an epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world. Kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Gurira) are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead… And ultimately, a war against the living.

“Dignity and motherhood don’t always line up,” observes Judy Reyes’s Celie in Birth/Rebirth. She offers this pearl of wisdom, an encapsulation of the film’s thesis, with an air of encouragement to Emily, an expectant mother played by Breeda Wool. The rest of Laura Moss’s film, though, is seldom as sanguine when approaching the subject.
Birth/Rebirth restages Mary Shelley’s Romantic-era creation story Frankenstein within the trappings of modern motherhood. Dr. Rose Casper (Marin Ireland), informed by her struggles to conceive, throws herself to experimental research aided by her access to body parts as a morgue technician. This sets her on a collision course with Celie, a Bronx-based maternity nurse, following the unexpected death of her six-year-old daughter, Lila (A.J. Lister).
Rose’s reanimation of Lila brings them into an unconventional co-parenting situation as each alternates between appreciating and abhorring their shared project. The richest...

"This experiment is bigger than your daughter." IFC Films + Shudder have unveiled an official trailer for an indie horror film titled Birth/Rebirth, also written all lowercase as birth/rebirth. This premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year in the Midnight section. It also played at a bunch of other film festivals over the last few months, with a release set for August in theaters before it streams on Shudder in the fall. A morgue technician successfully reanimates the body of a little girl, but to keep her breathing, she will need to harvest biological materials from other pregnant women. When the girl's mother, a nurse, discovers her baby alive, they enter into a deal that forces them both down a dark path of no return. This directorial debut from Laura Moss reimagines Mary Shelley's classic horror myth Frankenstein with such a contemporary understanding that it becomes something exciting,...

Our own Tyler Nichols gave the Frankenstein-inspired horror film Birth/Rebirth a 9/10 review after catching a Sundance screening earlier this year (you can read his review Here), and now a wider audience will have the chance to see it when it receives a theatrical release on August 18th. With that date just one month away, a trailer for Birth/Rebirth has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.
Birth/Rebirth is coming to us from IFC Films and Shudder, so we can probably expect to see the movie reach the Shudder streaming service sometime in the near future.
Judy Reyes of Scrubs stars in the film alongside Marin Ireland of The Umbrella Academy and Aj Lister of Challengers. The feature debut of director Laura Moss, who also wrote the screenplay with Brendan J. O’Brien, Birth/Rebirth has the following synopsis: Rose (Marin Ireland) is a pathologist who prefers working with corpses over social interaction.

The season one finale of Disney+’s National Treasure: Edge of History ties up all the treasure-hunting loose ends while dangling the possibility of where season two could go if the streaming service picks up the drama. Episode 10, “Treasure Protectors,” picks up the action right where episode nine ended, with Agent Hendricks (Armando Riesco) having just stabbed Agent Ross (Lyndon Smith) with a sword. We, the audience, now know he’s Salazar – the man we’ve heard about all season but whose identity has just been revealed.
When Billie (Catherine Zetta-Jones) questions Salazar about why he’s there, Rafael (Jacob Vargas) chimes in and reminds her that Salazar is the one who killed her brother. But, of course, Salazar claims Rafael is a liar.

After loading the boat, they set off to find the treasure.

Exclusive: Shudder has picked up rights to the horror film The Unheard in the U.S., Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.
Pic puts AMC’s genre streamer back in business with director Jeffrey A. Brown, whose 2019 debut feature The Beach House proved to be one of its buzziest early titles. His latest will stream exclusively on Shudder starting on March 31st.
The Unheard follows 20-year-old Chloe Grayden (Lachlan Watson), who after undergoing an experimental procedure to restore her damaged hearing, begins to suffer from auditory hallucinations seemingly related to the mysterious disappearance of her mother. The script was written by Michael Rasmussen and Shawn Rasmussen — who previously penned the Paramount alligator horror, Crawl.
The project was developed and produced by Andrew D. Corkin through his Untapped banner that he shares with actor Theo James (White Lotus) who also serves as an EP.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for “Treasure Protectors,” the season finale of “National Treasure: Edge of History,” now streaming on Disney+.
In the first “National Treasure” movie, Nicolas Cage’s Ben Gates justifies stealing the Declaration of Independence by telling the authorities he is a treasure protector — but that was so 2004.
In the Disney+ spinoff series “National Treasure: Edge of History,” the latest threat to this country’s lost history is from treasure destroyers, specifically a group known as Cras Est Nostrum. This faction hunts down and destroys treasure to avoid the messy business of having to rewrite history.
Billie (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and her specific brand of brute force has been the group’s muscle this season in pursuing Montezuma’s Treasure, which she calls a “political powderkeg” if found. And in this week’s season finale, she deciphers the final clue by kidnapping Jess (Lisette Olivera) and her...

Jacob Vargas and Lisette Olivera in Disney+’s ‘National Treasure: Edge of History’ episode 9
Episode nine of Disney+’s National Treasure: Edge of History is jam-packed with surprises, so buckle in. The episode kicks off with Jess (Lisette Olivera) and her father, Rafael (Jacob Vargas), being led through a private airport by Billie (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and her team. Rafael has a plan but Jess has one too, of course, and lets him know she has Ethan’s phone.
Before boarding the private plane, Billie reminds them that she heard everything and wants Rafael’s journal. She orders Kacey (Breeda Wool) to search Jess.
Elsewhere, Oren (Antonio Cipriano) is currently freaking out. He and Liam (Jake Austin Walker) went to Agent Ross (Lyndon Smith) and told her about Myles – his grandpa’s old nurse – being murdered. When Agent Ross checks out the scene, Myles’s body is gone and the room’s clean.

The Sundance Film Festival’s Midnight sidebar launched with a stomach-churning (literally, on-screen for real) meditation on extreme motherhood with the premiere of Birth/Rebirth.
“This is where things get nasty,” said one of the Midnight programmers, Charlie Sextro. No, he was not referring to the man who brought in a rack of BBQ ribs from the grocery store into the screening, although that image does give you insight into the kind of atmosphere one can expect at midnight.
This was the first year the festival kicked off the midnight section at the Rey Theatre, after years of screenings at the Library Theatre. And while some years Midnight movies can be raucous and sweat-inducing affairs, depending on the offering, this opening was shaded with tragic grotesqueness of grounded mad science.
Directed by Laura Moss, who also co-wrote the script with Brendan J. O’Brien, the movie centers on a mother and...

If David Cronenberg were suffering from a severe case of the baby blues, he might have cooked up something like birth/rebirth, a queasily clinical horror debut from Laura Moss that explores the darker sides of child rearing, from birth to death and way beyond.
Not for the fainthearted, this twisted if not exactly terrifying feature takes some cues from Stuart Gordon’s 1985 cult flick Re-Animator, as well as from classics like Dracula and Frankenstein, in its grisly portrayal of two women resurrecting a little girl’s dead corpse in the name of science and love.
Loaded with placentas, fetuses and enough plasma to supply several blood banks, the film uses its ample gore less for shock value than to channel the invasive medical procedures and transformations female bodies undergo while procreating, as well as the loss that women can experience afterwards. In other words, birth/rebirth is one big creepy metaphor for motherhood.
