Esteemed British writer David Nicholls is not precious when it comes to adaptations of his novels and cites Netflix’s recent adaptation of his 2009 novel One Day as being a perfect example of how being open-minded to fresh ideas on established material can result in good work.
Speaking at Dublin’s first ever screenwriting festival Storyhouse, Nicholls sat down for a lengthy discussion with Room and Normal People director Lenny Abrahamson to discuss his process of writing and adapting material. Nicholls credited the writers and directors of series One Day – writer-creator Nicole Taylor, writer Bijan Sheibani and director Molly Manners, among others – of their ability to adapt One Day for a modern television audience.
“The joy of that was that they were both being very faithful and trying to replicate the feeling of reading the novel while at the same time embellishing and drawing things out,” said Nicholls. “And I...

Netflix’s romantic drama “One Day” is set to contend at the Primetime Emmys in the limited or anthology series categories, Variety has confirmed.

Netflix's "One Day" was a major hit series, and should prompt viewers to watch the 2006 film "Starter for 10," based on a David Nicholls novel. Nicholls adapted a few of his books into screenplays, with the film "Starter for 10" receiving critical acclaim (and the movie version of "One Day" failing critically). "Starter for 10" and Netflix's "One Day" received similar Rotten Tomatoes scores, yet the series was more successful globally.
Netflix's One Day was one of the most streamed series upon its debut on the streaming platform, and its success should prompt those who enjoyed it to watch a film that premiered 18 years before the show's release. The 2024 romantic drama television series is an adaptation of David Nicholls' 2009 book of the same name, which chronicles the complicated and devastating love story between Dexter Mayhew and Emma Morley. The 2011 film adaptation of David Nichols‘ novel “One Day” starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess was met with decidedly average notices at best. However, Netflix’s new adaptation has corrected that misstep and the limited series has received overwhelmingly positive reviews and acclaim from all corners.
This new editions showcases “This is Going to Hurt” breakout star Ambika Mod in the Hathaway role (Emma) while “The White Lotus'” Leo Woodall takes up the Sturgess mantle (Dexter). Emma and Dexter meet by chance on the night of graduating from university and the next day they part ways. However, their relationship then charts years as their fates are tied together. Both stars excel here and their chemistry propels the series to soaring heights while creator and writer Nicole Taylor, who wrote the 2018 Jessie Buckley movie “Wild Rose,” masterfully presides over proceedings, hence the rave reviews.

Netflix's One Day series eliminates Dexter and Tilly's sexual encounter that occurs in the book. The decision to remove this plot point was for the best as it would have caused major drama and soured the relationships between the characters. Tilly's character in the show is much more well-rounded and likable and has a much closer friendship with Emma compared to the book.
Netflix's One Day left out one part of Dexter's story from the book that would've made the TV adaptation worse. Based on David Nicholls' 2009 novel, One Day tells the complex love story between Emma Morley (Ambika Mod) and Dexter Mayhew (Leo Woodall) as it sways between platonic and romantic. Beginning on the night the pair first met at their university graduation ball on July 15, 1988, One Day traces how both Emma and Dexter's lives unfold, together and apart, over a 20-year period, with each new episode taking...

Netflix's One Day includes a heart-wrenching twist that hits hard due to the audience's emotional investment. Actress Ambika Mod's portrayal of Emma in One Day and Shruti in This Is Going To Hurt showcases her versatility and talent. Showrunner Nicole Taylor decided not to change One Day's big twist because it preserves the story's narrative integrity.

Ambika Mod shines as Emma, providing a more grounded and realistic performance compared to Anne Hathaway's portrayal. The episodic format of the Netflix series allows for more character development and a deeper exploration of the story compared to the 2011 film adaptation. The chemistry between the leads, Leo Woodall and Ambika Mod, is palpable and genuine, creating a more believable and passionate romance on screen.

One Day, a TV miniseries remake of the Anne Hathaway romance film, has achieved success on Netflix's global top 10 for television, reaching no. 3 with 5.3 million views. Despite being released halfway through the counting period, One Day managed to rank higher than more established shows like House and Young Sheldon. The success of One Day can be attributed to its adaptation status, as it benefits from a devoted fan base of the original film and the popularity of romance content on Netflix.
The Netflix series One Day has become a hit on the platform. One Day is a TV miniseries remake of the 2011 Anne Hathaway romance film of the same name. Like its predecessor, the One Day TV show tells the story of two teenagers who meet on graduation night and fall for each other while the threat of having to go their separate ways looms over them the next day.

In 2011, Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess starred in a romantic drama called "One Day," about two friends who meet up on July 15 every year for 20 years, slowly falling in love in the process. While this may sound like the rosier version of 1978's "Same Time, Next Year," it is actually an adaptation of the novel "One Day" by David Nicholls. It was a modest hit at the box office but underwhelmed critics, and with Hathaway appearing in both "The Dark Knight Rises" and her Academy Award-winning turn in "Les Misérables" the following year, "One Day" has mostly been forgotten by the general public. One of the most common complaints lobbied against the film was that the 20-year timeline was too big to be condensed for a movie, but limited series weren't as plentiful in 2011 as they are now.

Emma's death was always intended and gives the show deeper meaning, portraying life as beautiful but unfair. Dexter continues to grieve but is slowly moving forward, raising his daughter and forging a new life for himself. The relationship between Emma and Dexter goes beyond a simple love story, showing the depth of their connection and love for each other.
Netflix’s One Day still ends as tragically as David Nicholls’ book does. The limited series, adapted by Nicole Taylor, consisted of 14 episodes to tell its story, which was filled with heartache, love, humor, and deep bonds. Script-writer Nicole Taylor no doubt faced quite a challenge when presented with the task of turning the infamous Rochdale child-abuse sex scandal into a drama. Indeed, no one would be alone in feeling dubious as to how a story so undeniably horrifying and traumatic could be translated on screen – without sensationalising the violation of young children at its core. Yet, somehow, the uncomfortable feeling that the real girls are in some way being exploited (again) never happens, thanks to the production’s reiterated emphasis on ‘truth’.
This theme is introduced at the opening as the protagonist, Holly Winshaw (Molly Windsor), is questioned by police regarding a supposed robbery of a can of soda in her local kebab shop. Clearly shaken, she is trying to tell them she didn’t steal anything and from this point forward we will witness how ‘telling the truth’ was all these girls ever tried to do. By working directly with three of the victims and their families to shape this story, ‘telling the truth’ is what we need to realise Three Girls is attempting too.
Yes – many a docudrama on traumatic issues will claim to be coming from this standpoint. But the temptation to be arresting through sensationalism and shock tactics, whilst effective, always seems to detract from the reality of what happened. The rape scene of the first episode of Three Girls broadcasts how it intends on a different form of story-telling. The scene is raw, heart-breaking and sickening, but there is no attempt made to charge the scene with unnecessary violence or dramatic panache. It is low-energy, subtle and yet frighteningly-real.
This is how Three Girls approaches its darkest corners, with an emphasis on the real and true. Everything from costume and setting to the exceptional acting gives the impression of being free from embellishment and true to life. I will never understand how Windsor and her two young co-stars Ria Zimitrowicz and Liv Hill succeed in giving such performances at their age – but they undoubtedly steal the show. Each girl seems to have an understanding of the weight they were carrying and their portrayals were understated and yet charged with the vulnerability needed to demonstrate the reality of the victims’ naivety.
More importantly, Three Girls could easily have spent its whole screen time focusing on directing the anger of its viewers towards the perpetrators. Yet, when faced with the question of why it is morally justifiable to create a TV programme out of rape/abuse/violence, inciting hatred is not a sufficient nor acceptable answer. Instead, this production does what a good adaptation of a real-life atrocity should do: ask us to reflect on ourselves.
The incessant focus on the failure of the care system, the police and everyday people who were ignoring the red flags becomes as much, if not more, of the reason why these children suffered to such an extent. It is easy to hate the group of Asian paedophiles who seem so far removed from us whilst we sit on our sofas at home. But here we see every day people judge the young girls on their dress, their behaviour and their background. Thus they don’t believe them, they don’t take their claims seriously and they cease to treat them like the children that they are. Three Girls comes to our screens with a purpose other than the clichéd ‘raising awareness’ – to ask us what we would do if we were faced with one of these three girls.
Perhaps this message is best personified by sexual health worker Sara Rowbotham (Maxine Peake), as she is screaming at anyone who will listen to open their eyes and see the reality of the situation: This isn’t drama, this is the truth.

The first trailer for BBC One's The C Word has been released.
Sheridan Smith stars alongside actor Paul Nicholls in the one-off 90-minute drama.
The drama is based on the real-life experiences of Lisa Lynch, who published a book about her battle with breast cancer.
Smith stars as Lynch, who passed away in 2013 at the age of 33 after assisting in the casting of the actress.
"Her zest for life was infectious," said Smith. "I was moved and inspired by her courage and bravery. I couldn't help but love her. That's why I want to tell her story.
"I'm so sad that Lisa won't get to see the finished drama, having been so involved in the development of it. I'm honoured and humbled that she wanted me to play her on screen, and I hope that I will make her proud."
The first pictures of Smith playing Lynch were released earlier this month.

Dracula, Season 1, Episode 5, “The Devil’s Waltz”
Written by Nicole Taylor
Directed by Nick Murphy
Airs Fridays at 10 pm (Et) on NBC
NBC’s Dracula has a lot of plates spinning. Grayson (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) still has a thirst for revenge, an obsession with Mina (Jessica De Gouw) which she reciprocates (but really, who wouldn’t?), he’s looking for a cure to his biggest problem- that pesky not being able to walk in the sun thing, a vampire hunter, Lady Jayne Wetherby (Victoria Smurfit) is hot on his tail, and his trusty sidekick Renfield (Nonso Anozie) has been kidnapped. Needless to say, it’s been a busy five episodes.
After the pilot, Dracula hit a slump. The revenge plot line has some potential but it wasn’t a good sign that it got stale after only three episodes. “The Devil’s Waltz”, though, shows how much fun Dracula can...

Volkswagen has unveiled its most important product launch of the year with a campaign for the small car, Volkswagen Up!.
Created by Ddb Sydney, a TV campaign will be supported by street furniture, print executions, a microsite and web banners which will run nationally.
Nick Pringle, creative director at Ddb Sydney commented: “Working on the launch of the up! was a huge opportunity but also a challenge, because small cars have such a negative perception in Australia. The phrase ʻtin can on wheelsʼ springs to mind. Who better to tell our story than a lovable old-timer who believes that heʼs being driven in a big car, such is the quality of the new up!.”
Jutta Friese, Gm Marketing of Volkswagen, said: “The launch of the Volkswagen up! is our most important product launch for the year as it marks our entry into the sub-light category. The up! sets a new...

Ddb has released a new ad for Arnott’s brand Tim Tam, which shows consumers picking the famous chocolate bars from trees at Martin Place.
The ad is based on an experiential event the Tim Tam “orchard”, which was erected a fortnight ago. The ad ends with the tag line ‘Truly, Madly Tim Tam’.
The campaign comes the week after Arnott’s parted ways with agency Gpy&R, awarding Ddb the entire account.
Leif Stromnes, MD for strategy and innovation at Ddb Group Sydney said: “The idea behind this first execution of Truly, Madly Tim Tam came straight from our Facebook community and we really wanted to give back to these fans who gave us such a great idea to work with. What better way to come full circle than to create personalised ads which feature the names of individual Tim Tam fans and actually run across both TV and...

Ddb has launched a press and poster campaign for its oldest client, Volkswagen.
The idea behind the ads is that any parking spot, no matter how precarious it may seem, is easy to negotiate with Vw’s Park Assist technology.
The ad series, entitled Nightmare Spots, was by creative team Steve Wakelam and Nick Pringle.
The ads will break from 18 April.
The Ecd behind the campaign was Dylan Harrison, who is responsible for Vw’s most awarded press campaign of all time – Cops – which he co-created while at Ddb London, with recent Ddb Sydney departee Simon Veksner.
Harrison told Mumbrella: “All good Vw ads are about how a product truth is translated into a human truth. Cops was about how the build rigidity of a Vw translated into how people behave around it. These ads are about how Vw’s automotive technology make people think differently about parking.”
He added:...

The judgements and recriminations were out in full force this week in Miami, with Delko (Adam Rodriguez) and Ryan (Jonathan Togo) deeming the suspected quarterback to be guilty even before the evidence was in. Yes you've guessed the one time Jesse (Eddie Cibrian) was needed around to be objective. With Delko coming up with the old, "guilty people run" line. So what was that he did back at the end of season 7 in the episode Seeing Red, when he came charging out in the car with his father and was shot at by Calleigh (Emily Procter). How wrong was he here and not so much as an apology or remorse for wrecking someone's life. The scene opens with Ryan and Delko chasing the suspect and Ryan attempting to to follow suit when he jumps the railing and barely hangs on. Ryan almost made it. With flashes of the suspect, Brady...

According to the online magazine TV.com, the hit Canadian TV series Being Erica will be remade in Great Britain.
First of all, the British remake will be titled You Again. Like in the original series, the leading character, a 30-year-old woman, will travel back through time to fix her regrets. However, we should rather expect to see a leading character who lives in Glasgow and is an NHS worker.
As for the creative team, the lead writer will be Nicole Taylor (Ashes to Ashes and Secret Diary of a Call Girl). Of course, Being Erica's creators - Jana Sinyor and Aaron Martin - will have their hands in You Again as consultants.
Finally, the British had the occasion to see Being Erica's first season on E4, a British digital channel. In Canada, Being Erica will return for a third season.
