Simon Beaufoy Adapting Sci-Fi Novel ‘Raw Shark Texts’; ‘Sharp Teeth’ Still on the Table
With work on Catching Fire both completed and being reworked by Michael Arndt, Oscar-winning scribe Simon Beaufoy is right back in the adaptation game — and on two projects that have been percolating for a bit of time. Oldest among these is The Raw Shark Texts, a prospective film based on the ambitious, potentially crazy time and memory-spanning science fiction novel by Steven Hall. [24Frames]

In a set-up some have compared to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, a young man named Eric Sanderson awakens and discovers that “an earlier version of himself has been lost on a trip to Greece, where his girlfriend was killed in a boating accident, and that his memory is possibly being pursued by sharks.”(If you can just go ahead and wrap your head around it for a second, these sharks consume memories.) Through some means that yours truly can’t even concoct in his own mind,...

Simon Beaufoy Talks Creating Sharp Teeth With Danny Boyle and Catching Fire
Oscar-winning screenwriter of 127 Hours and Slumdog Millionaire Simon Beaufoy will again be collaborating with director Danny Boyle (who's got some Oscar hardware of his own). This time the duo will be adapting Toby Barlow's novel-length poem Sharp Teeth for the big screen.

And these dogs bite ... hard.

Beaufoy recently sat down with io9 to talk about just how they would go about creating this lycanthropic tale. "Sharp Teeth is a really fantastic novel-length poem," Beaufoy said. "It's gangland La, except the gangs happen to also shapeshift into dogs. It's all about the pack dynamics — it's very mad, but really fabulous."

Considering the best way to bring these were-creatures to life, Beaufoy mentioned that the easiest method might not be the most effective way. "They're kind of dogs, more than werewolves," Beaufoy said. "It'll probably not (be animated), that would be too easy. We have to make life much more...

Simon Beaufoy Updates Danny Boyle’s Werewolf Story ‘Sharp Teeth’
Our first and, until now, only update on the prospective Danny Boyle film Sharp Teeth came in the early part of 2011; even then, the extent of our knowledge depended solely on comments from Simon Beaufoy, who was trying to crack the process of adapting Toby Barlow‘s “werewolves-in-gangland-la” novel. Easier said than done, as he summed up the adaptation process by saying, “If you get it wrong, it’s a disaster. If you get it right, it’s extraordinary.”

An interview that Beaufoy conducted with i09 saw the project raised once more, yet he sounded about as far into the process as 13 months ago. Lately, he’s “been talking with Danny [Boyle] about it,” but the man’s still “gotta get the script right first.” (He is very busy, to be fair.) If one area has been pinned down, it’s a big one: their approach to and depiction of the main creatures.

Simon Beaufoy Gives Updates On Danny Boyle's Potential 'Sharp Teeth' And 'Hunger Games' Sequel 'Catching Fire'
Sharp Teeth
Simon Beaufoy, along with Alex Garland, has become one of Danny Boyle's go-to screenwriters with projects like 127 Hours and Slumdog Millionaire. He's also writing Boyle's upcoming (should Boyle approve the adaptation) almost werewolf movie Sharp Teeth. Sharp Teeth will be an adaptation of the novel-length poem by Toby Barlow. He's also working on the Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire and I wholeheartedly agree with his philosophy on adaptations, " one has to be very loyal to a fan base that is rigorous beyond anything I've ever come across. And yet, you still have to do the kind of brutal process of turning it into a film...

Danny Boyle May Bare Some Sharp Teeth
Danny Boyle is a talented man with many interests. One only need look at his filmography to “get” that. Dude has gone from directing a zombie movie to sci-fi to a real-life movie about a man who cuts off his own hand to escape a boulder. So why not direct a movie about La gangs that are actually shape-shifting dogs? That’s apparently what writer Simon Beaufoy is working on, and he’s revealed that he’s trying to get Boyle to direct the film, which will be based on the book called “Sharp Teeth” by Toby Barlow. More on it: An ancient race of lycanthropes survives in modern La and its numbers are growing as packs convert the city’s downtrodden into their fold. Stuck in the middle are a local dogcatcher and the woman he loves, whose secret past haunts her as she fights a bloody one-woman battle to save their relationship.

Simon Beaufoy and Danny Boyle Team up Again For Sharp Teeth, A Werewolf Gang Film In La
The BBC is reporting another team up with director Danny Boyle and writer Simon Beaufoy for an interesting concept that only Danny Boyle can make interesting. This marks the potential third collaboration between the director and writer tying previous Boyle collaborator, Alex Garland (Sunshine, 28 Days Later and The Beach).

The project they are working is particularly interesting, especially as a follow-up to films like 127 hours and Slumdog Millionaire. It’s called Sharp Teeth, and no, it is not a shark movie but rather about rival gangs who can shape-shift into dogs.

“It’s an adaptation of a book by a writer called Toby Barlow and it’s a very extraordinary mix of gangland Los Angeles, really, really rough – a lot of shootings – and the difference with this particular piece of work is that these gangs can shape-shift at will into packs of dogs.”

Beaufoy also added Boyle would likely direct...

Danny Boyle May Direct ‘Sharp Teeth?’
What is director Danny Boyle’s next project? Scriptwriter Simon Beaufoy hopes it would be his script “Sharp Teeth.” Beaufoy is Boyle’s longtime collaborator on projects, including “Slumdog Millionaire” and “127 Hours.” “If I write it well enough, he’ll direct it,” said Beaufoy on the recruitment of Boyle. Beaufoy described the film as an adaptation of a book by a writer named Toby Barlow. “It’s a very extraordinary mix of gangland Los Angeles, really, really rough – a lot of shootings – and the difference with this particular piece of work is that these gangs can shape-shift at will into a pack of dogs,” he explained. His research methods for the screenplay is visiting various Los Angeles neighborhoods and by riding along with the Los Angeles Police. “It’s brilliant seeing a different part of La. When you’re involved with the movie industry and you go to awards ceremonies...

Simon Beaufoy Has Sharp Teeth, Danny Boyle May Bite for Next Project
Following the critical and commercial bonanza of Slumdog Millionaire with 127 Hours was a bold move for Danny Boyle.

No doubt the director was offered all manner of scripts bookmarked with blank cheques but he wisely chose to use the Oscar momentum to tell the story he wanted to and now his film, and its lead actor James Franco, have been nominated for this year’s awards. Screenwriter Simon Beaufoy has, along with Boyle, been nominated for a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar and news comes today of what may be their next collaboration.

Speaking with Tom Brook for BBC America Beaufoy spoke about a project he is currently working on, a gangland saga with a lycanthropic twist, and mentions that if it all works out then director Danny Boyle is interested in signing up.

Here’s what Beaufoy said,

It’s an adaptation of a book by a writer called Toby Barlow...

Simon Beaufoy and Danny Boyle could reteam for Sharp Teeth
Director Danny Boyle and scribe Simon Beaufoy are likely to reteam for the third time with an adaptation of the Toby Barlow piece, Sharp Teeth. Beaufoy has worked with Boyle on Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours.

Beaufoy revealed the news in an interview with BBC America and stated that “if I write it well enough, he’ll (Boyle) direct it.”

This project will not likely be moving forward for a bit, he is currently in the middle of the Frankenstein stage production in London, and will also be the artistic director for London’s Olympic opening ceremony in 2012. If this were to move forward, it would not be until after the Summer Olympics in 2012.

The project sounds pretty cool. It will be based on a comedic horror poetry piece involving gangs and werewolves, making it a nice departure from Boyle's recent work. I am a huge fan of Slumdog Millionaire and...

Danny Boyle Eyes Sharp Teeth
Simon Beaufoy
Simon Beaufoy and Danny Boyle, the writer-director team behind 127 Hours and Slumdog Millionaire, could reunite once more for a new project called Sharp Teeth. Here's what Simon Beaufoy recently had to say about this intriguing project.

"It's an adaptation of a book by a writer called Toby Barlow and it's a very extraordinary mix of gangland Los Angeles, really, really rough - a lot of shootings - and the difference with this particular piece of work is that these gangs can shape-shift at will into packs of dogs."

Simon Beaufoy also added that Danny Boyle would likely direct the project if he enjoys the script, which is still being written by Simon Beaufoy.

"If I write it well enough, he'll direct it."

The screenwriter also talked about the research he is doing, riding with Los Angeles Police Department officers and seeing different parts of the city that he previously hadn't seen before.

Danny Boyle & Simon Beaufoy Working Together Again on Werewolf Film
After their last two collaborations, Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours, each earned Best Picture nominations (and with the former winning; the latter still to be decided), it makes sense that Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy would want to work together again. They certainly had similarities in terms of style and tone, but feel like, at least to me, completely different works. So it also shouldn’t be a surprise that their next collaboration could be something different that what they’ve worked on in the past.

And that next collaboration may be what’s been described as a werewolves-in-gangland-la film, based on the epic poem Sharp Teeth by Toby Barlow. Speaking to InContention, he revealed new details about the project, stating that he’s been taking ride-alongs with members of the Lapd in Compton and Watts as preparation for the script. The story was described as Boyz N the Hood if...

Danny Boyle And Simon Beaufoy May Reteam For Sharp Teeth
Simon Beaufoy and Danny Boyle have found a system that works: Beaufoy writes the script, Boyle directs the movie, and nominations are passed out in some of the biggest Oscar categories. Thus far it has worked twice, both walking home with plenty of hardware back in 2008 with Slumdog Millionaire and their newest, 127 Hours, waiting to see how 6 nominations turn out. You don't mess with success, and now it appears the two have found what they will do together next. Beaufoy recently spoke with BBC America and revealed that he is currently working on an adaptation of the Toby Barlow novel Sharp Teeth, and while Boyle isn't 100% attached yet, the writer was quoted saying, "If I write it well enough, he.ll direct it." Set in Los Angeles, the book very much focuses on the gangland territories, but there's a catch - the gangs can transform at will into packs of...

Danny Boyle Sinking His Teeth into Werewolves Next? Sharp Teeth News
Boyle turned the zombie genre upside down with his film 28 Days Later so you've got to wonder what the man could do for werewolves. We may not have to wait too long to find out as BBC America is reporting that Simon Beaufoy, Boyle's collaborating screenwriter, is working on an adaptation of Toby Barlow's book Sharp Teeth...

Beaufoy was quoted as saying "If I write it well enough, he'll direct it. It's an adaptation of a book by a writer called Toby Barlow and it’s a very extraordinary mix of gangland Los Angeles, really, really rough — a lot of shootings — and the difference with this particular piece of work is that these gangs can shape-shift at will into packs of dogs."

There's more to the story than that and it involves Anthony, a dogcatcher (insert joke here) and his girlfriend who happens to be a werewolf that has abandoned her pack.

Beaufoy and Boyle to Adapt Sharp Teeth
Simon Beaufoy, 127 Hours and Slumdog Millionaire writer, is currently writing on an adaptation of a book by Toby Barlow titled Sharp Teeth.

But what’s also interesting about this project, is the fact that Beaufoy is hoping that Danny Boyle will jump onboard, too.

The whole thing revolves around werewolves in gangland Los Angeles, and for the rest of the details, check out the rest of this report.

In an interview with BBC Beaufoy revealed:

“It’s an adaptation of a book by a writer called Toby Barlow and it’s a very extraordinary mix of gangland Los Angeles, really, really rough – a lot of shootings – and the difference with this particular piece of work is that these gangs can shape-shift at will into packs of dogs.”

Boyle is definitely an awesome choice for director’s seat, but is he even interested in the story like this?

Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy May Reteam for ‘Sharp Teeth’, About Shape-Shifting Werewolves in Gangland La
Danny Boyle
Thus far, the pairing of Danny Boyle and Simon Beaufoy has proven to be unstoppable. The writing/directing team already scored Academy Awards for their work on Slumdog Millionaire -- for Best Picture, Best Directing and Best Adapted Screenplay, among others -- and they're currently in the running for a whole new batch of Oscars (Best Picture included) for 127 Hours. Now Beaufoy says he's at work on his next screenplay -- an adaptation of Toby Barlow's darkly comedic horror poetry novel Sharp Teeth -- and if he has his way, Boyle will be directing it. Learn more after the break. BBC America [1] interviewed Beaufoy about the project, and he made his intentions to have Boyle direct the script immediately clear, stating simply, "If I write it well enough, he’ll direct it." Here's hoping Beaufoy lives up to his potential then, because his description of the film sounds as...

Could Director Danny Boyle Next Tackle Werewolves in Sharp Teeth Adaption
Award winning British director Danny Boyle ('28 Days Later', '127 Hours') may be returning to horror quicker than we expected. Of course there's been rumours, even from the man himself, that he would return to the infectious '28 Days Later' franchise by helming the third installment (expected to be '28 Months Later'). However, it seems that werewolves may be first on the agenda as BBC America report that Boyle's collaborating screenwriter Simon Beaufoy is currently working on the adaption of Toby Barlow's 'Sharp Teeth'. Simon Beaufoy Has Sharp Teeth
Sharp Teeth
He'd be forgiven for taking some time to bask in his 127 Hours Oscar nomination, but screenwriter Simon Beaufoy is already hard at work on his next project, adapting Toby Barlow's Sharp Teeth. And he says if he makes a good job of it, Danny Boyle will direct.Beaufoy and Boyle's collaborations so far amount to the not insignificant one-two punch of Slumdog Millionaire and the aforementioned arm/rock epic, with both also produced by Chris Colson. Is their third team-up really likely to be this Gangs of La with werewolves, or is that a bit of cheeky spin from Beaufoy to talk up the gig?Whatever, Sharp Teeth seems ripe for screen treatment, whoever takes it on. Barlow's young adult novel, written in verse, involves warring packs of lycanthropes coming straight outta Compton and Watts. The full moon is irrelevant; they can change at will. It is, says Beaufoy,...

Boyle and Beaufoy Working on Werewolf Gang Story 'Sharp Teeth'?
The duo have already had great praise and success from audiences and critics alike with their work on 127 Hours and Slumdog Millionaire, but now screenwriter Simon Beaufoy and director Danny Boyle might be starting a gang. No, they're not going to run around with bandanas and guns, but Beaufoy did tell BBC's Anglophenia he's in the midst of adapting Toby Barlow's book Sharp Teeth, a story set in gangland Los Angeles. But it's no coincidence the gangs at the center of the story prowl the city like packs of dogs because they're actually werewolves who can change their form at will and have a plan to take over La. Awesome! In Contention also adds that the story is a lot like Boyz N the Hood if the ruthless gang from that gritty story could turn into fierce beasts. Seems like a throwback to films like The Lost Boys, but...

"It's a very extraordinary mix of gangland Los Angeles, really, really rough . a lot of shootings . and the difference with this particular piece of work is that these gangs can shape-shift at will into packs of dogs." How does Danny Boyle, director of 28 Days Later and 127 Days , come into play? Well, Beaufoy tells the BBC that if the script is strong, Boyle will direct. Sounds like pipe dreams, honestly, but we'll see! Boyle is presently directing a stage adaptation of "Frankenstein" in London. Save Detroit! One Inch, One Dollar at a Time
Loveland is a real estate program to sell off some of Detroit's 40 square miles of vacant land for $1 per inch.

Detroit is shrinking. Coming in just under a million in the 2000 census (the first time its population had dropped that low since the '20s), Detroit is now down another 150,000 or more. Foreclosed or otherwise abandoned homes are everywhere, some more prominently than others--consider the Ice House, or Detroit Demolition Disneyland. Mayor Dave Bing is shuttering city departments and bulldozing vacant buildings (hopefully not Michigan Central Station, which bravely faces its own uncertain future, an empty shell of its former self). Detroit has 40 square miles of empty land.

What to do? Well, you could farm it, like John Hantz is proposing. But as Greg Lindsay pointed out here, that might not be the best idea: "With 95% of its remaining buildings still inhabitable, inner-city Detroit should at least be an urban Petri dish.

It's a Mad Mad Mad Real World
Which real-life ad-industry stars most resemble the stars of "Mad Men"?

The third season of Mad Men debuts this Sunday, August 16, on AMC. The show's relevance outdistances its actual ratings, especially in the media and advertising worlds in which the show is set. The 60s-era shenanigans of Don Draper, Roger Sterling, and their compatriots is rivaled only by the gossipy fun every Monday morning rehashing their actions--and thinking about how today's ad-industry characters stack up with Madison Avenue fiction. We play "Who Would Play?" with a real-world cast of creative directors and ad magnates.

Don Draper's colleagues and rivals at Sterling Cooper are alternately idolizing him and plotting to topple him. Bbdo North America chief creative officer David Lubars may or may not have knives targeted at his back in-house, but the hype that surrounds him as the new-media creative genius who will drag Madison Avenue into the 21st century...
