Last Week Tonight with John Oliver continued its dominance in the Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series category.
The HBO comedy show beat TBS’ Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, NBC’s Late Night With Seth Meyers, CBS’ Late Show with Stephen Colbert to win the award for the fifth year in a row.
The British comedian accepted the award on behalf of his team using one of his son’s “creepy” toys in lieu of an actual Emmy.
“I’d like to thank my writers, obviously, who work incredibly hard all year round and this year has been particularly challenging,” he said. “I’d like to thank the Emmys for not holding the Emmys in person this year because of the, you know, thing. Thank you, we will cherish it forever.”

The WGA Awards boosted a pair of movie screenplays into Oscar frontrunner status on Saturday night, handing its marquee Original Screenplay award to Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won for Neon’s Parasite, and its Adapted Screenplay award to Taika Wiatiti for Searchlight’s Jojo Rabbit. Both of the winning scripts are nominated for Oscars on February 9.
This year the guild wasted no time in its 72nd edition, awarding its marquee prizes early in the night in simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York. Many of the film-side nominees gathered in the Edison Ballroom in NYC, so as to make the shorter jump to the BAFTAs which are Sunday in London.

The future of CollegeHumor, the pioneering comedy website that rose to prominence before the rise of YouTube, was thrown into question Wednesday after the brand’s sale resulted in more than 100 layoffs.
InterActive Corp., the New York company that owned CollegeHumor parent Ch Media, sold its brands to CollegeHumor’s chief creative officer Sam Reich. Terms of the deal were undisclosed but Deadline reported that “all but a handful” of employees were notified of their layoffs Wednesday.
Reich, who joined CollegeHumor in 2006 was not available for comment, but shared the news on Twitter and said he aimed to continue operating the leading CollegeHumor brands, including Dropout, its comedy Svod streaming service. “I hope to be able to save Dropout, CollegeHumor, Drawfee, Dorkly, and many of our shows,” Reich said on Twitter. “Some will need to take on bold new creative directions in order to survive. You may not agree with all of them.

It was the Primetime Emmy Awards, and it was a night of surprises—like Fleabag‘s win for Best Comedy Series, and the total shutout for perennial favorite Veep—and expected wins, like Game of Thrones taking Best Drama Series, and love for Saturday Night Live resulting in two trophies. John Oliver also doubled up, winning Variety Talk Series as well as Writing. In the Limited Series race, Chernobyl prevailed, taking three trophies including the top prize.
Perhaps the most drama, of course, came from the ever-evolving battle between the vanguard of prestige cable, HBO, and the upstart streamer fast becoming the new establishment, Netflix. Coming into tonight, the two were nearly neck-a-neck with Creative Arts wins, but HBO, which had a narrow advantage, cemented its lead with 34 wins to Netflix’s 27. Awkwafina and Ike Barinholtz have signed on to produce and star in the comedy Crime After Crime for Stx Films. With a script from Dan Gurewitch and David Young.
The movie “is about a millennial podcast host who agrees to help the convict she’s devoted her true-crime podcast to prove his innocence after he escapes jail and turns up at her house.”
This sounds really funny and like a perfect match for Awkwafina and Barinholtz! Can you imagine if Steven Avery or Adnan Syed broke out of prison and turned up on the steps of their podcaster’s doors? I bet it would be less funny than this movie will be. Somethings are funnier when they aren’t happening in real life.
We will let you know when we get a release date. Does this sound like a movie that you’d enjoy?...

The Writers Guild Awards and the Academy writing nominees always don’t line up; many films are ineligible. This year, those included Oscar-writing nominees “Lion” and “The Lobster.”
This year, the WGA and the Academy differed dramatically. While the WGA deemed “Moonlight” and “Loving” as Original Screenplays, the Academy considered both as Adapted; only “Moonlight” landed a nomination.
At the WGA, as at the BAFTAs, Barry Jenkins’ script for “Moonlight” competed for the Original Screenplay Award against both Kenneth Lonergan’s “Manchester by the Sea” and Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land.” Unlike the BAFTAs, Jenkins emerged the winner over Lonergan, a sign of strength for “Moonlight,” which is nominated for eight Oscars.

“Expansion has always been our goal, but we waited until we had a slate of projects we couldn’t pass up,” states Whalen. “SpectreVision exists in a very specific and unique area in the indie genre space. We’re often approached with projects that we love, that aren’t right for SpectreVision’s indie, genre space. Now we can engage with those projects, without stretching the SpectreVision brand. The Writers Guild of America announced the TV nominees for the 2015 WGA Awards on Thursday (December 4) morning and several new shows broke into the fields in a big way. And, of course, there were a number of big WGA Award nomination head-scratchers. Specifically, where the heck was FX's "Fargo"? The answer is below. Making perhaps the biggest splash was "Transparent," which earned three nominations and, since "Orange Is The New Black" earned two nods and "House of Cards" pick up one, that meant that Amazon Prime and Netflix are, at least for one award-giving organization, on equal footing as creators of original programming. The Jill Soloway-created "Transparent" is nominated for New Series, where it will go against "The Affair," "The Knick," "Silicon Valley" and "True Detective." "Transparent" and "Silicon Valley" are also up for Comedy Series, going against "Louie," "Veep" and "Orange Is The New Black." Lest you panic...

Hey there, aspiring writers, directors, actors, musicians, actor-directors, musicians turned actors, poets, musicians turned poets, poets turned directors, and for sure bloggers (because blogging is supes art) – here’s just another quick reminder of a dilemma you’re already well aware of, but it always helps to have a graphical reminder / hope-dasher. Dan Gurewitch posted this following graphic from Rotten Tomatoes, noting that “it sums up the predicament faced by anyone who creates anything”: Yyyyup. If this graphic doesn’t spell out the age-old ‘artistic aspirations’-vs-$$$$ dilemma clearly enough, you can always just check out the Neilsen ratings on CBS shows versus Breaking Bad and Mad Men. (Actually, I’m pretty sure CBS technically owns me, so maybe I should delete that sentence? Ehh, whoever pays my salary would probably read it and at least be like ‘yep’ before firing me.) CollegeHumor knows the art of the prank. The online destination (and soon to be major motion picture studio) for individuals craving online video comedy is responsible for the most entertaining tricks of an amusing, playful, and sometimes malicious nature found on any type of entertainment medium. First there was Amir Blumenfeld and Streeter Seidell’s Prank War, an epic, escalating battle of sado-one-upmanship involving, but not limited to, a $500,000 half court basketball shot, a non-working parachute, and a nonexistent television cameo. Next came the Midnight Talk Show Prank, conceived by a slightly masochistic Dan Gurewitch, who gave a two-week window and copy of his house keys to fellow CollegeHumorer Josh Ruben with instructions to sneak into his apartment way after bedtime and wake him up to host an impromptu, short-form talk show dubbed The Late Late Late Show. And then there was the MTV clipshow series Pranked, hosted by the...

The last CollegeHumor prank war was an epic, escalating battle of sado-one-upmanship between Amir Blumenfeld and Streeter Seidell involving, but not limited to, a $500,000 half court basketball shot, a non-working parachute, and a nonexistent television cameo. One of the best CollegeHumor original web series is a talk show comprised of improved conversations between an irreverent Michael Showalter and a rotating cast of well-known comedians. The above programs are very good and display CollegeHumor’s prowess with things both prank and talk. That’s probably why the humor website decided to combine the two entertainment genres for one of its latest online originals. Midnight Talk Show Prank was conceived by a slightly masochistic Dan Gurewitch. He gave a two-week window and copy of his house keys to fellow CollegeHumorer Josh Ruben with instructions to sneak into his apartment way after bedtime and wake him up to host an impromptu, short-form talk...

Courtesy Comedy CentralNEW York, New York (X17online) - The creators of South Park apologized to the Web site CollegeHumor.com on Friday for using dialogue from a video on their site satirizing the summer blockbuster Inception. "It’s just because we do the show in six days, and we’re stupid and we just threw it together, But in the end, there are some lines that we had to call and apologize for." Matt Stone, who created "South Park" with Trey Parker, told The New York Times Friday in a telephone interview. Dan Gurewitch and David Young wrote the video Inception Characters Don’t Understand Inception, which was posted on CollegeHumor on Aug. 2. Coincidentally the South Park episode shown on Wednesday had a scene that contained dialogue similar or identical to the web-site's skit. Apparently Matt Stone and Trey Parker could not find a movie theater showing "Inception," or...

'South Park' creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have apologized for accidentally plagiarizing the website CollegeHumor.
As we reported last week, CollegeHumor writer Dan Gurewitch blogged about the similarities between an Oct. 20 'South Park' spoof of 'Inception' and one that he co-created with David Young. Gurewitch included a line-by-line comparison.
Parker and Stone then confessed to lifting the material, though unconsciously, CNN reports.
"We thought their joke was that a lot of those lines were actually in the movie, showing that the 'Inception' characters didn't even know 'Inception.' That was a mistake, and it was an honest mistake," said Stone. "We're stupid and we just threw it together."

South Park Creators Apologise For Stealing Dialogue
Matt Stone and Trey Parker have apologised to the bosses of a comedy website for lifting dialogue from an online short for an episode of South Park.
The episode titled Insheeption, which aired in the U.S. on Wednesday, poked fun at summer blockbuster Inception and featured similar wording to a CollegeHumor.com video, Inception Characters Don't Understand Inception.
Both featured the identical line: "Sometimes my thoughts of my dead wife manifest themselves as trains."
Stone claims he and co-creator Parker turned to the parody clip because they couldn't get hold of the Leonardo DiCaprio film and mistakenly assumed the line was actually featured in Inception.
He tells the New York Times, "It's just because we do the show in six days, and we're stupid and we just threw it together. But in the end, there are some lines that we had to call and apologise for."
The clip's co-writer Dan Gurewitch insists Stone was "extremely nice and apologetic" over the matter.

"South Park" creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker admitted to similarity between their recent "Inception" spoof and an episode done by web comedy video CollegeHumor. "It's just because we do the show in six days, and we're stupid and we just threw it together," Stone said in the confession. "But in the end, there are some lines that we had to call and apologize for."
On October 20, "South Park" aired an episode called "Insheeption" where many dialogues are noticably too similar to the web video called "Inception Characters Don't Understand Inception" which was written by Dan Gurewitch and David Young, and posted on CollegeHumor on August 2. While CollegeHumor said, "Shared unconstructed dream space" to explain what Limbo is, the Comedy Central cartoon said "Empty scary dream space."
Another example is when an 'expert' in "South Park" said, "We need to move them all to the next dream level before the projections kill them.

Is it us or does it seem like comedy has run out of ideas? 'SNL' was accused of ripping off 'Tim and Eric, Awesome Show, Great Job!', '30 Rock' was accused of ripping off 'The Sarah Silverman Program.' And now 'South Park' is accused of lifting a concept from College Humor.
On Wednesday night's episode, Trey Parker and Matt Stone spoofed the summer blockbuster 'Inception.' The characters tried to explain the dream level plot, yet only seem to further confuse things. It may seem familiar because we've seen dozens of 'Inception' spoofs and jokes since its release.
However, senior sketch writer at College Humor Dan Gurewitch argues the bit seems familiar because it was copied nearly line for line from his video.
