When it comes to making your voice heard by those in charge and demanding change in the world, songs are a powerful tool to express these opinions. Many famous artists have made their names and music infinite as they have used their talent to present a viewpoint which is perhaps most eloquently voiced in music. Especially if these opinions and narratives are part of a cultural minority within a country, these songs ring true in the ears of those sharing those experiences, and also hold some truth to the generations that come after. When it comes to the Civil Rights Movement, there are many examples, but the voice of Nobuko Miyamoto is one that has expressed the struggles of many Asian Americans faced with racism, injustice and other issues.

Inside Llewyn Davis upset 12 Years a Slave and was named Best Feature at the Gotham Independent Film Awards on Monday night. The honor gives a boost to the Coen brothers’ folk-music movie, though the Gotham Awards aren’t typically an Oscar bellwether due to its specific focus on independent film. (Last year, Moonrise Kingdom won the top prize.)
In the acting categories, however, Matthew McConaughey won for his work in Dallas Buyers Club, edging out a field that included Oscar contenders Chiwetel Ejiofor and Robert Redford. Similarly, Short Term 12′s Brie Larson was named Best Actress over Blue Jasmine’s Cate Blanchett,...

It was a mix of oft rewarded icons (The Coens) and breakthrough leading movie roles from former awesome TV ensemble players (Jordan & Larson) for the Gotham Awards last night in NYC. 12 Years a Slave, which led nominations (not that that means much at the Gothams with so few categories), went home emptyhanded. No, not even for Lupita Nyong'o in Breakthrough! Bad luck or a sign that people respect but don't love the slavery drama? I don't personally understand this since it's a great film and great films are easy to love but though I'm a Gothamite, I'm not a Gotham voter. And full disclosure: I'm also cool on the Coen's chilly musical, apart from the music and the cat both of which are prize-worthy.

The 60s folk scene/character study from Joel and Ethan Coen conquered the uneven field of nominees which included 12 Years.

Joel & Ethan Coen's "Inside Llewyn Davis" won top honors at the 23rd Gotham Independent Film Awards, which saw a complete shut out for nomination leader "12 Years a Slave." Steve McQueen's "12 Years a Slave" and Ryan Coogler's "Fruitvale Station" were rather expected inclusions among the 5 finalists for the 4th annual Gotham Independent Film Audience Award. They'll compete against much less publicized documentaries: Samantha Buck's “Best Kept Secrets,” which takes on Newark public school for students with special needs; Tadashi Nakamura's “Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings,” which profiles a ukelele legend; and Ramona S. Diaz's “Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey,” which follows the replacement frontman for the band Journey. Notably, none of the films are directed by white men, which is more or less unheard of at film awards shows.
