Jake/James is rugged, kind, and handsome, but his presence on Fantasy Island may turn out to be the one thing that throws Elena Roarke (Roselyn Sánchez) into a tailspin. In the age of branding and franchises, every existing story has added value. But not every film is fit for TV.
The challenge of adapting movies to a new medium is a tricky one with no clear-cut way to do it. Many new series credit “Fargo” as their benchmark, citing its tone and setting as inspiration for creating a new world around the best parts of what came before. That’s all well and good, but there are as many failed attempts to replicate Noah Hawley’s strategy as successes.
Similarly, some carbon copies — using the same characters and plot points as the preceding movie — are just as good, if not better than their cinematic predecessors. Because any way can work, many various attempts have been made. There’s no right way to do it, but there are a lot of wrong ways; as evidenced by the growing pile of canceled shows based on movies.

A throwback to an earlier time in which adventure movies geared to young children didn’t need to feature lavish special effects or Dwayne Johnson, Joseph Itaya’s feature debut is a quaint affair that will be hard-pressed to find its target audience whether in limited theatrical release or home video formats. The tale of two brothers who get involved in that familiar kid’s movie narrative staple, a treasure hunt, Lost & Found will quickly find itself in the first category.

Sometimes, TV shows that are based movies can be big successes. Sometimes not. About a Boy was not and now NBC has cancelled it after two seasons without even airing all of the episodes.
About a Boy revolves around San Francisco songwriter Will Freeman (David Walton) who had a big hit. It set him up for life financially -- and gave him a lot of freedom and free time. His world is turned upside down when a charming boy named Marcus (Benjamin Stockham) and single mom named Fiona (Minnie Driver) move in next door.
The sitcom debuted in February of 2014 with a special preview episode that attracted a healthy 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 8.26 million viewers. In its regular timeslot a week later, the ratings rose a bit to a 2.47 rating with 8.36 million. The numbers started falling after...

‘About a Boy's’ Young Star Benjamin Stockham Talks Season 2, Shares Favorite Pieces of Acting Advice
At just 14 years old, Benjamin Stockham has already starred in three broadcast network TV shows. Fox's “Sons of Tucson” was cancelled after just four episodes in 2010. And NBC decided not to renew White House family comedy “1600 Penn” after its first season ended in early 2013. So Stockham knows how hard it is to make it to a second season and isn't taking his current series, NBC's “About a Boy,” for granted. “It is really, really great being on a second season,” Stockham told TheWrap. “With the first season, you're always a little bit worried that it might not...

Both the About a Boy movie and novel were a big success. Will the TV show be a hit as well? Will it be a hit and renewed for a second season or will it be cancelled instead? Stay tuned to find out.
About a Boy revolves around a songwriter (David Walton) who has a big hit that sets him up for life financially. His carefree world is turned upside down when a charming 11-year-old (Benjamin Stockham) and his single mom (Minnie Driver) move in next door.

NBC gave new sitcom About a Boy a preview after the network’s Sochi Winter Olympics coverage Saturday night. The results? Tough to judge.
It was a Saturday — a night typically devoid of original scripted programming on broadcast. Plus Boy aired at 11:05 p.m., well outside of prime-time. Both factors normally would significantly decrease performance expectations. Yet the sitcom aired after the Olympics, so that would typically increase expectations.
So it’s tough to accurately make any judgements about Boy delivering a middle-of-the-road-ish 8.3 million viewers and a 2.2 rating among adults 18-49. That’s holding 76 percent of its Olympics lead in,...

If you're a fan of the book or movie, did you like seeing most of the events compressed into a half-hour episode? If you're new to these characters and this story, how did it play to you? Do you like David Walton? Minnie Driver? Young Benjamin Stockham? Given how much ground the pilot covered, do you feel like there's more story to tell in later episodes? And will you watch again...

All too often, a novel doesn't translate into a movie, and a movie doesn't work as a show.
NBC's "About a Boy" breaks that cycle.
The pilot that airs Saturday, Feb. 22, does a great job introducing a callow cad, an odd boy and his strident mom. The comedy then moves to its regular time slot on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
Minnie Driver plays Fiona, the self-righteous, single mom of Marcus (Benjamin Stockham). They move from England to San Francisco, next door to Will (David Walton). They begin acrimoniously when she asks him to not barbecue meat because she's vegan, and the wind carries the odor.
Driver does insufferable perfectly.
"Her heart is absolutely in the right place," Driver tells Zap2it. "She is a really sweet soul but is terribly funny because of her earnestness."
If this seems familiar, it's the latest take on Nick Hornby's 1998 novel and Hugh Grant's 2002 film.

In the pantheon of movies based on television shows, there’s way more bad than good. Actually, now that I think about it, they probably don’t even deserve their own pantheon—more like a dimly lit janitorial closet or a Burger King bathroom. Sure, there’s some high-quality examples like The Untouchables or The Fugitive, but more often than not you end up with Lost in Space or Land of the Lost. When the content’s flowing in the other direction, from big screen to small, there’s a slightly better hit-to-holy-bananas-what-a-miss ratio, but still for every M*A...

"About a Boy" now has a dad for its titular kid, Marcus. Tony Hale ("Veep," "Arrested Development") will play the absent father to the awkward boy.
Hale's character is named Hugh Womple, according to EW.com. Womple is not a character from the 2002 Hugh Grant movie, but Marcus' dad did appear in the 1998 novel of "About a Boy" by Nick Hornby. There is no information yet on when or how often the dad might appear.
Set to premiere on NBC Saturday, Feb. 22, "About a Boy" is a comedy centered on the relationship of an immature single guy, Will (David Walton), who befriends his neighbor, a socially inept adolescent named Marcus (Benjamin Stockham). The series will also star Minnie Driver as Marcus' mother, Fiona.
The Emmy-winning Hale currently co-stars in "Veep," where he plays the vice president's personal aide, Gary Walsh. He previously played Buster Bluth on "Arrested Development."...

NBC has recruited a Veep VIP to play Marcus’s dad on About a Boy.
EW has learned exclusively that Tony Hale has been tapped to guest star on the upcoming Jason Katims-produced comedy as a character named Hugh Womple, father to Benjamin Stockham’s Marcus and ex to Minnie Driver’s Fiona.

It didn't take long for About a Boy boss Jason Katims to recruit one of his Friday Night Lights colleagues to NBC's new freshman comedy. Former Friday Night Lights co-star Adrianne Palicki has booked a guest arc on the comedy starring David Walton and Minnie Driver, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The series, based on Nick Hornby's novel and subsequent 2002 Hugh Grant feature film, follows the relationship between bachelor man-child Will (Bent's Walton) and a young boy, Marcus (1600 Penn's Benjamin Stockham), who moves in next door with his crazy single mother, Fiona (Driver). Parenthood’s Dax Shepard is going to visit NBC’s About a Boy — but don’t call it a guest spot.
In fact, Jason Katims, who executive produces both shows, says the cameo will be as under the radar as About a Boy star David Walton’s appearance on Parenthood last week, in which Walton’s character was a part of a poker game hosted by Shepard’s character. “The one that aired on Parenthood was so subtle because people don’t know [About a Boy] yet, but I kinda liked that — not say anything about it and putting it out there,” Katims said.

David Walton recently appeared on "Parenthood" as Will Freeman, his songwriter character from new NBC comedy "About a Boy." Both shows are created by Jason Katims, who tells the 2014 TCA winter press tour that the crossovers are only natural because they're set in the same area.
"I think just because both shows are set in San Francisco and the Bay area, it sort of makes sense that there would be [crossovers]," says Katims. "... because Will is in the world of music and Crosby's in the world of music, it made sense to me."
Walton's recent turn on "Parenthood" revolved around a poker game, which is the way that "Parenthood" will be crossing over to "About a Boy" as well, initially.
"It turns out in 'About a Boy,' Will also has his own poker game, so Dax Shepard will be making an appearance as Crosby Braverman," says Katims.

Looks like NBC‘s got crossover fever, not just in the crime drama department but in its comedy slate. A few hours after Chicago Pd creator Dick Wolf teased that show’s upcoming crossovers with Chicago Fire and Law & Order: Svu, About A Boy Ep Jason Katims revealed today at TCA that the new half-hour comedy does indeed exist in the same TV universe as his other San Francisco-set show, Parenthood. The small screen adaptation of Nick Hornby’s novel of the same name premieres February 21 before settling into its Tuesday 9 Pm slot and stars New Girl‘s David Walton as Will, a bachelor man-child who befriends the 11-year-old misfit kid next door (Benjamin Stockham) and his single mother Fiona (Minnie Driver). Walton popped up briefly this week on Parenthood to set up the bridge between the shows. “It turns out Will also has his own poker game so Dax Shepard...

Animation is probably one of my favorite form of movies. I think it would be pretty fascinating to watch the whole process from start to finish. I'm excited to be able to share my five favorite animation movies with you.
My love of animation began with my number one pick:
1) Nightmare Before Christmas - I am a big Tim Burton fan, so you could probably put all his animation in the number one spot but there is just something really great about Nightmare Before Christmas. It is definitely not your average animation, it's dark and quirky. The characters are so unique and unexpected. There...

NBC is bringing the 2002 film "About A Boy" to TV.
The movie, which starred Toni Collette, Hugh Grant, and Nicholas Hoult and was based on the Nick Hornby novel of the same name, is getting remade with a new series, starring Minnie Driver, David Walton and Benjamin Stockham.
Collette, who is starring in CBS's new drama "Hostages," said she recently ran into Grant and the two discussed the pilot. "You know, I ran into Hugh Grant and he was like, 'I don't like that they're doing that! Why are they making a show of our fabulous movie?'" she told The Huffington Post at the CBS 2013 upfront. "I suppose it's a story that they could continue. I mean, why not? I mean, I don't like someone else playing my character. [Laughs.]"

It's out with the old and in with the new when it comes to NBC comedy next season. The network renewed only two comedies this year -- "Parks and Recreation," which will be back in the fall with a full season, and "Community," which returns for another 13 episode arc at some point Tbd.

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the first announced today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on NBC.
The Peacock did not have a good year. Only one of its new shows, "Revolution," was a true hit. Another, "Chicago Fire," got renewed by the skin of its teeth whilst the fate of a third, "Hannibal," remains uncertain.
None of last year's new comedies survived, neither did two mid-season dramas, which leaves the network with some big holes to fill. Three dramas and three comedies will debut in the Fall ahead of three more dramas and two comedies mid-season. Two further dramas and a comedy are presently unscheduled.
Several other pilots didn't make the final cut and won't become series including the high-profile Charlize Theron-produced drama about the Hatfields and McCoys, the Bruckheimer-produced...

There's just one term season for 1600 Penn. NBC has cancelled the Thursday night sitcom after one season and 13 episodes.
1600 Penn follows the dysfunctional Gilchrist family as they adapt to life in the White House. When the public voted Standrich Gilchrist (Bill Pullman) into office, they likely had no idea that they were getting his goofy son "Skip" (Josh Gad) as part of the deal. The show also features Jenna Elfman, Martha MacIsaac, Andre Holland, Amara Miller, and Benjamin Stockham.
The sitcom previewed on December 17th to a 2.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 6.88 million viewers. For NBC, those are very good ratings.
Unfortunately, 1600 Penn couldn't hold onto those numbers. The second episode drew a 1.6 rating and 3.86 million on January 10th. A week later, the ratings fell to a 1.2 in the demo and...

There are still many NBC shows to be cancelled and renewed but the peacock network has already picked up five new series for next season. One is called About a Boy and it's based on the Nick Hornby novel -- which was already made as a Hugh Grant movie back in 2002.
The TV show version will star Will Freeman, Minnie Driver, Benjamin Stockham, Al Madrigal, and Anjelah N. Johnson-Reyes. Stockham (below, left) was a regular on NBC's 1600 Penn which has yet to be cancelled but surely will be.

Update 6 p.m. Et: NBC has also canceled first-year comedy "Guys With Kids" and sophomore "Up All Night," which was the subject of a quixotic attempt by the network to retool it from a single-camera show to a multi-camera one.
NBC giveth and NBC taketh away. After picking up several pilots and giving a sixth-season renewal to "Parks and Recreation" on Thursday (May 9), the network swung the cancellation hammer on several other shows.
First-year comedy "1600 Penn" won't be back next season. Neither will "Whitney," which got a surprise renewal last year but didn't survive to a third season.
Both were expected, as ratings for both "1600" and "Whitney" were soft and NBC is doing a fairly serious overhaul of its comedy roster. It has already picked up four new half-hours to go along with "Parks and Rec."

After only one term in office, NBC has impeached the White House comedy "1600 Penn," while the news was also bad for second-year comedy "Whitney." Series co-creator Jon Lovett confirmed the cancellation on Thursday (May 9) afternoon when he tweeted "It's official. 1600 Penn is a cult classic." NBC somewhat confirmed the news earlier in the day by picking up Jason Katims' small-screen version of "About a Boy," which features "1600 Penn" co-star Benjamin Stockham in a key role opposite David Walton and Minnie Driver.
