A House committee voted to advance a bill that would create a commission to study the effects of slavery in the United States and the possibility of paying reparations to the descendants of enslaved people.

This vote marks the first time the bill, H.R. 40, has made it out of the Judiciary Committee since it was originally introduced by Rep. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) in 1989. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) has reintroduced the bill each Congress since Conyers’ retirement in 2017, and called the bill a “major step” on the “path to restorative justice.

Mike Pence will deliver closing remarks from Fort McHenry in Baltimore, according to ABC News. The historical landmark, which was the site of a battle during the War of 1812, inspired Francis Scott Key to write the “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

The highlight of the third night of the Republican National Convention will be speeches by Vice President Mike Pence and the second lady of the United States, Karen Pence, but there is another major news story looming: Hurricane Laura.

Throughout the day on Wednesday, news networks already were doing a split screen tracker of the hurricane, which is posing a threat to the Gulf Coast as a potential category four storm as it makes landfall. That is projected on the Louisiana and Texas coasts sometime late in the evening or Thursday morning.

Convention planners have not yet said how or if the oncoming hurricane will be addressed during the evening’s events, or if any plans are changing.
