Update: CNN reached a settlement with a security consultant this afternoon, hours after a jury found the network liable for defamation and awarded him $5 million.
Judge William Henry announced the settlement as jurors were deliberating in the second phase of the trial, to determine how much in additional punitive damages to award Zachary Young, a Navy veteran who filed the lawsuit last year. He was featured in a 2021 report on the exorbitant fees being demanded on the black market to evacuate Afghans during the chaotic U.S. withdrawal.
A CNN spokesperson said, “We remain proud of our journalists and are 100% committed to strong, fearless and fair-minded reporting at CNN, though we will of course take what useful lessons we can from this case.”
Earlier, the Florida jury today found CNN liable for defaming Young. The jury awarded $4 million in damages related to Young’s loss of earning potential and another $1 million for pain and suffering,...

A Florida jury began deliberations this afternoon in a security consultant’s defamation lawsuit against CNN.
Zachary Young sued the network following a report in 2021 that he sought exorbitant fees to evacuate Afghans in what amounted to a black market in the chaotic U.S. withdrawal.
The segment from Alexander Marquardt was aired on CNN on November 11, 2021, and re-aired three times. Links to the segments also were posted on social media, and a digital article was posted on November 13.
In one instance, Young’s image appeared on screen with the chyron, “Afghans trying to flee Taliban face black markets, exorbitant fees, no guarantee of safety or success.”
Judge William Henry said that a jury would have to decide whether the use of the term “black market” meant illegal or criminal activity.
The jurors will have to decide a series of questions, starting with, Did CNN commit defamation per se? Did CNN commit defamation by implication?...

A security consultant testified in the second day of his defamation trial against CNN, as his attorney ran through a series of text messages with the network reporters.
Zachary Young claims that he was defamed by a a false 2021 report that tarred him with exploiting Afghan family members by charging exorbitant fees to get them out of the country during the chaotic U.S. withdrawal.
On the stand today, Young testified about his interactions with CNN’s Katie Bo Lillis on Nov. 3, 2021. Young said that he reached out to the network because he thought they needed help in evacuation operations from Afghanistan. But Lillis told him that she was actually working :on some reporting related to ongoing efforts to help get at-risk Afghans out of the country and your name came up in a couple of conversations recently.” He said that he would cooperate with the story but did not want to be named.

Updated, with Des Moines Register comment: Donald Trump vowed to file additional lawsuits against media outlets and media figures, just days after he settled his lawsuit against ABC in which the network agreed to contribute $15 million to his presidential foundation and library.
“We have to straighten out our press. Our press is very corrupt, almost as corrupt as our elections,” Trump told reporters today in a press conference.
Trump suggested that he would file a lawsuit against Ann Selzer and the Des Moines Register, which published her poll, just days before the election, that showed Kamala Harris with a three-percentage point lead in the state. As it turned out, Trump won the state by more than 13 percentage points.
Trump claimed that the poll was “fraud” and “election interference.” “We’ll probably be filing a major lawsuit against them today or tomorrow,” he said.

Barack Obama’s now-famous “crowd size” joke at the DNC the other night? The words themselves might have been expected by his speechwriters, but the leave-nothing-to-the-imagination hand gesture was a surprise. And all Obama.
Jon Favreau, Obama’s former White House director of speechwriting who assisted in the crafting of the DNC speech, reiterated on CNN today what he says during the latest episode of his podcast Pod Save America: Obama’s hand gesture, sizing up Donald Trump, wasn’t scripted.
Obama’s full DNC quote about Trump: “Here’s a 78-year-old billionaire who has not stopped whining about his problems since he rode down his golden escalator nine years ago. It has been a constant stream of gripes and grievances that’s actually getting worse now that he’s afraid of losing to Kamala. There’s the childish nicknames, the crazy conspiracy theories, this weird obsession with crowd sizes.

Kasie Hunt has long been known for her work on the political beat, but in days to come she hopes people will think of her for news about culture or sports, maybe the weather. When the news cycle delivers something weird or surprising, the CNN early-morning anchor says she is even “willing to make faces on the air.”
Cable’s A.M. news shows have thrived in recent years by focusing relentlessly on politics, Now CNN and Hunt want to scramble viewers’ perceptions by widening the network’s aperture. “We want to be there for them even when politics is not the lead,” says Hunt during a recent interview.
People who tuned in to Monday’s “CNN This Morning,” the program Hunt anchors between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. — now with her name in the title — may have noticed a few new elements on screen, particularly starting at 6. New blue-and-yellow...

“I have decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation,” President Joe Biden said Wednesday night from the Oval Office. “That is the best way to unite our nation,” the 81-year-old incumbent added of his exit from the 2024 race and quick endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic nomination.
Certainly, reaction to Biden’s primetime TV speech has been almost totally united in praise. Blacklist founder Leonard Franklin and Stephen King both perhaps put it best and most bluntly soon after Biden’s just under 15-minutes remarks ended.

Warner Bros. Discovery is set to name Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary to former President Barack Obama, as its new communications chief, Variety has confirmed. The company is expected to make the announcement official on Monday, and is believed to have already informed Wbd chief David Zaslav’s direct reports with the news.
Gibbs will take over the role from former corporate communications chief Nathaniel Brown, who exited the company in January. The exec will work closely with Zaslav in shaping the company’s corporate messaging and in other arenas. The search for Brown’s replacement took six months as Zaslav was believed to be searching for a major name to fill the role, and sources said the exec believes he’s excited by the pick.
Gibbs was a longtime senior advisor to Obama and served as his press secretary from 2009 to 2011. He began working for Obama during his U.

Bill Maher had quite a lot to say on his latest episode of Real Time about Donald Trump’s guilty verdict in his criminal hush money trial.
On Thursday, a New York jury found the former president guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records. Throughout the five weeks of testimony, the jury heard from a former tabloid publisher, a Hollywood fixer, Trump’s former lawyer and a porn star. Sentencing for Trump is set for July 11.
Maher described Friday’s episode as a “historic show,” seemingly because Trump became the first former president to be convicted of felony crimes.
“Yeah, he’s pretty distraught and pissed off these days,” the host said. “But I gotta say, Don, if there was a silver line to this, you finally did something that made Stormy [Daniels] come.” (The case centered on a sexual encounter that Daniels said she had with Trump in 2006 that...

John Waters is still stirring things up at 78. A frequent Real Time guest of Bill Maher, the writer, actor, and filmmaker of such cult classics as Pink Flamingos and Cry-Baby can still zing with the best.
He started off with a brief discussion of this week’s biggest news, the Trump trial results in New York.
“If he gets home detention, you will hear Melania scream,” Waters said. Adding, “In jail, they pay guards for cell phones. He has to sneak in “Just for Men.”
The conversation took an abrupt turn when Maher brought up the Pope’s slur against gays this week, which prompted Waters to reminisce about the days of Glory Holes on both coasts. “God, I hope I didn’t blow Rex Reed!”
Fortunately for Walters, he claimed his films are “doing better than ever,” though he admits he lost every obscenity case he was ever involved in.

According to leading bookmakers, Michelle Obama is the frontrunner to replace Joe Biden as the Democratic presidential nominee in the event that Biden steps down before the 2024 election. Although the former first lady has not indicated an interest in a White House bid, betting company Betfair currently offers odds of 8/1 (11 percent) on Michelle Obama as the most likely alternative to Biden.
Betfair’s odds reflect growing concerns about Biden’s health, exacerbated by recent gaffes, which have sparked speculation about the possibility of him withdrawing from the race. While Biden has secured victories in Democratic primaries in New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada, his challengers within the party remain on the fringe.
Sam Rosbottom, a spokesperson for Betfair, acknowledged that doubts about Biden’s mental acuity have influenced some bettors to place their money on other potential candidates. Rosbottom noted that four years ago, at the start of the primary season,...

Emanuel, who is Jewish and served as former President Barack Obama’s chief of staff and as the mayor of Chicago, was out of the state when the vandalization occurred. It was discovered by the head of the homeowner’s organization in his southwest Michigan residential community.

Business Insider reported that eight people were affected, and they were sales and editorial positions. A network source said that “a small number of changes” but that it was “a relatively small group.”
CNN’s audio division has produced a number of podcasts, including a recently launched series in which Anderson Cooper explores loss and grief. Other podcasts are hosted by on-air personalities including Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Harry Enten, as well as The Axe Files with David Axelrod.

Chrissy Teigen has revealed that the miscarriage she suffered in 2020 when she was 20 weeks pregnant with Jack, her and John Legend’s third child, was actually a life-saving abortion.
“I had to make a lot of difficult and heartbreaking decisions,” she explained during a recent appearance at social impact agency Propper Daley’s “A Day of Unreasonable Conversation” summit. “It became very clear around halfway through that he would not survive and that I wouldn’t either without any medical intervention.”

Anderson Cooper will debut a new CNN Audio podcast that will be devoted to exploring loss and grief.
All There Is with Anderson Cooper will premiere on Sept. 14.
According to the network, Cooper began recording the podcast alone during his final weeks packing up the apartment of his mother Gloria Vanderbilt. He found unopened boxes belonging to his late father and brother, and overwhelmed by the experience, he began to record intimate conversations with others about coping with grief. Among those who share their experiences are Stephen Colbert, Molly Shannon and Laurie Anderson.
In a statement, Cooper said, “I’ve often felt isolated and alone in grief and yet it is something all of us will experience in our lives. It’s helped me tremendously to hear from others on how they move forward in the face of loss, and I hope it helps listeners of this podcast as well.

A jury found that New York Times and one of its top editors were not liable in Sarah Palin’s defamation lawsuit, affirming a judge’s earlier announcement that he would dismiss the case irregardless of their decision.
The jury’s verdict was unanimous.
As the jury continued its deliberations on Monday, U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff told attorneys that he would toss out the case after concluding that Palin’s attorneys had failed to show that the Times and James Bennet, a former editor, had acted with actual malice, the threshold for proving libel against a public figure. Rakoff said that he would still allow the jury to reach a verdict because of the likelihood of an appeal.
The case centered on a June 14, 2017 Times editorial, written hours after a shooter opened fire on a congressional softball game, that delved into harsh political rhetoric and its links to violence.

Attorneys for Sarah Palin and The New York Times wrapped up their case on Friday with lengthy closing arguments, leaving it to jurors to decide whether a faulty 2017 editorial that linked the former governor’s political action committee to a mass shooting was merely “a mess up” or actual malice.
Jurors went into deliberations after they were presented with instructions by U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff.
During the trial, James Bennet, who was then the Times opinion editor and also is a defendant in the case, said that he was to blame for inserting, under the pressure of a deadline, sentences that linked the “incitement” of Palin’s Pac to the 2011 Tucson shootings in which six people were killed and congresswoman Gabby Giffords was severely wounded. Palin sued in 2017.

Documentary filmmaker Peter Kunhardt began working on HBO’s “Obama: In Pursuit of a More Perfect Union” in 2014, while the former president was still in the White House. The director-exec producer and Jelani Cobb, a writer for the New Yorker and exec producer on this three-part docuseries, spent four years researching and discovering rare and never-before-seen archival footage of Obama before filming commenced in 2018. Kunhardt conducted 39 interviews with a wide range of people including Cobb, late Congressman John Lewis, Valerie Jarrett, David Axelrod, Rev. Al Sharpton as well as Rev. Jeremiah Wright during the course of production.
The diverse voices allowed Kunhardt, who previously directed “John McCain: From Whom the Bell Tolls” for HBO, to examine and critique the former president’s personal and political journey, as well as the United States’ fraught racial history. Jon Stewart said he was "stunned" to hear the recent revelations that Louis C.K. sexually harassed multiple women during an interview on Today.
"You give your friends the benefit of the doubt," Stewart explained. "I've had friends who have had compulsions – gambling, drinking or drugs – and we've lost some of them; some of them have died. Jon Stewart was “stunned” after five women publicly accused Louis C.K. — who later admitted the allegations “are true” — of sexual misconduct.
“You give your friends the benefit of the doubt. I tried to think about it in terms of, I’ve had friends who have had compulsions and have done things: gambling or drinking or drugs. And we’ve lost some of them. Some of them have died,” he said Tuesday on the Today show. “You always find yourself back to a moment of, ‘Did I miss something? Could I have done more?’ And in this situation, I think we all could have.
