XYZ Films has acquired U.S. rights to the classic Cannes Directors’ Fortnight title “The World is Yours” directed by Romain Gavras from StudioCanal and to the TIFF hit film “We Gotta Get Out of This Place,” directed by Simon Hawkins and Zeke Hawkins. The hyper-stylized films are the first titles in a new XYZ initiative to introduce audiences to classic festival hits that cater to cinema fans.

“The World is Yours” premiered at Cannes in 2018 and stars Karim Leklou, Isabelle Adjani, Vincent Cassel and Oulaya Amamra and was co-written by Gavras, Karim Boukercha and Noe Debre. In the film, a mid-level drug dealer (Leklou) dreams of having a new life, but his mother (Adjani) has gambled away his savings. He must take one last job in Spain, but his entourage gets involved: his mother, his ex-con friend, his crush, and possibly The Illuminati.

The Slamdance Film Festival announced today their narrative and documentary feature film competition for its 24th Festival edition, taking place January 19-25, 2018 in Park City. Established in 1995 by a group of filmmakers whose work had been rejected by the Sundance Film Festival, Slamdance is dedicated to fostering a community for independent emerging artists, fashioning itself “the premiere film festival by filmmakers, for filmmakers.”

The feature competition includes 16 premieres, mostly produced in the U.S. All competition films are feature length directorial debuts with budgets of less than $1 million Usd, and without Us distribution. In addition, the festival announced a new partnership with alumni Anthony and Joe Russo (“Captain America: Civil War,” and “Avengers: Infinity War”) to establish the inaugural Russo Fellowship award. Every participating filmmaker will be eligible for a $25,000 cash prize and mentorship from the Russos in the development of the winner’s next project at the brothers’ Los Angeles studio.

On paper, Michael Barrett’s Temple sounds promising enough. The film takes three tourists deep into the forests in Japan in search of a mysterious temple, and as expected, the proverbial poop hits the fan. But as far as execution goes, Temple falls apart repeatedly throughout its 78-minute running time, with a story that feels truncated, characters that never really make any sort of impact, and a few “twists” that really aren’t twists at all.

In Temple, we’re introduced to Kate (Natalia Warner), a religious studies student who wants to head out to Japan to take in some Buddhist temples to help prepare for her major. Well, well, it looks likes America is trying to take on J-Horror once again! The first time we got films like the remakes of The Ring and The Grudge; the last time we got The Forest – where we stand with Temple, a new horror movie from the writer of You’re Next, The Guest, and Blair Witch and from the executive producer of The Ring trilogy, is anyone’s guess.

Yes, Temple has a decent pedigree but, and this is a huge but (and I cannot lie), whether Simon Barrett’s script can live up to the standards horror fans expect from these types of genre films remains to be seen. I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt – for now – based on this trailer…

I've got a trailer for a new horror film coming out called Temple, which comes from writer Simon Barrett (You're Next, The Guest, Blair Witch). It doesn't look like the best horror movie, but it looks like it might have some fun elements that horror enthusiasts might enjoy.

Screen Media Films has debuted the official trailer for the horror film titled Temple, directed by Michael Barrett, from a screenplay originally written by Simon Barrett (of You're Next, The Guest, Blair Witch) along with fellow horror filmmaker Jt Petty. The film is supposedly an homage to Japanese horror as it follows a group of Americans visiting Japan who decide to stay overnight at a haunted temple. Of course, they end up discovering this was a bad idea despite warnings from locals. The film stars Logan Huffman, Brandon Tyler Sklenar, and Natalia Warner. Oddly, screenwriter Simon Barrett has kind of disowned the film, explaining in an article on Medium, "I don’t know what that project is any more than you do." The cold holiday season brings with it a lot of gifts, but few are quite as hotly anticipated as the upcoming Doctor Who hourlong Christmas special, entitled “The Return of Doctor Mysterio.” With its release set for Christmas day on BBC One, the UK TV station has now released its first official trailer, which reveals the new mysterious superhero vigilante known as The Ghost.

The BBC has just released the first trailer for their upcoming 2016 Doctor Who Christmas Special! Peter Capaldi returns as the Time Lord in the episode titled, "The Return of Doctor Mysterio" and it also introduces us to a mysterious superhero vigilante known as The Ghost.

If you go down to the woods tonight and you see a group of smartly attired young men sitting around on leather couches laughing, you might want to get out of there. These men have a hobby: they get their kicks from hunting young women through the trees. But one day they mess with the wrong girl.

That’s the premise of Final Girl, part of this year’s Frightfest selection. It’s the directorial debut of accomplished photographer Tyler Shields, who works with longstanding friend Abigail Breslin as his star. We asked him how it came about and he told us that being a filmmaker is what he’s really wanted ever since he was a child. “Photography kind of just happened. Making movies was always my dream.”

Each and every year a Frightfest there always seems to be an overriding theme that ties a lot of the films screeening there – be they in the main or discovery screens. This year the theme, at least from the films I’ve seen so far, would seem to be strong women. Be it the strong women that take charge of proceedings in films like The Sand, Stung and Night of the Living Deb or the strong “final girls” in films like Last Girl Standing and this, Final Girl.

Final Girl – not to be confused with Todd Strauss-Schulson’s Hilarious The Final Girls) – is a “cool” movie. Like, swanky-murderers-who-act-like-psychotic-Rat-Pack-members “cool.” But it’s not very sensible, nor does it care about being a nonsensical horror-stereotype-busting acid trip. Tyler Shields is a devilishly creative filmmaker, and there’s a certain amount of respect earned through this wicked battle of the sexes, but as a storyteller, Shields is more erratic than a scat rapper. With that said, the question morphs from “Is Final Girl an enjoyable movie?” into “Do you value aesthetics over substance?” Narration versus cinematic anarchy – take your pick!

Bad Turn Worse is the new emotional crime thriller and the stunning directorial debut of Simon and Zeke Hawkins.

The film is currently available in select theaters nationwide and VOD platforms including iTunes.

After a weekend of partying with stolen money, three Texas teens (Jeremy Allen White, Logan Huffman, and Mackenzie Davis) find themselves indebted to a sociopathic criminal named Giff (Mark Pellegrino in a breakout performance).

To pay their debt, Giff forces the teens to steal from his boss, a money-laundering gangster named Big Red (William Devane). Things go from bad to worse when betrayal, distrust, and corruption complicate an already dangerous plan.

Whenever anyone mentions Bad Turn Worse in the future, I’ll fondly think back on one of my new favorite heist explanation scenes, so cleverly orchestrated by brothers Simon and Zeke Hawkins. Blending the frantic nature of a first-person-shooter with cheeky criminal comedy, three juvenile robbers run though their illegal blueprints in real time, imagining exactly how the break-in should go down. While that might sound a bit oversimplified, the Hawkins brothers inject a little fun by having the two characters on camera react to any hiccups in the plan mid-scene, interrupting a hold-up with hypothetical questions only to direct their attention back towards elderly hostages after bickering about small details. The sequence is flashy, exciting, clever and memorable, striking a unique high note – a note that’s sorely missed throughout the film’s more generic existence.

The Texas-set neo-noir formerly known as We Gotta Get Out Of This Place has ponied up its first trailer as Starz Digital ramps up for a November 14 release. Jeremy Allen White (Shameless), Mackenzie Davis (Halt And Catch Fire) and Logan Huffman (V) star in Bad Turn Worse as small-town youngsters who blow stolen cash on a weekend of partying. Hannibal Classics have unveiled the trailer which most certainly gives us a good insight into the original style that celeb photographer Shields has plumped for. If you were to check Abigail Breslin’s IMDb page, you would see that the young actress has spent a good bit of time in genre films. She has Zombieland, The Call, Haunter, and the upcoming Maggie all on her resume. You will also find a movie named Final Girl which filmed in 2012 and has been in post-production since March of 2013. It actually received an odd trailer that month, where director Tyler Shields showed the entire film in 1 minute. That was the last we had seen of it.

That was until today. We now have a new, more traditional, trailer for this long gestating project and I have to say it has piqued my interest quite a bit.
