In 2003, Mgmt’s Andrew VanWyngarden and Benjamin Goldwasser were still calling their musical project The Management, and were years away from commercial acclaim. But on an April afternoon at Wesleyan University, the two friends set up on campus and performed a set for their peers, which included live radio sampling, a cover of Talking Heads, and an early rendition of their 2007 classic, “Kids.”
Now, footage of that performance has been posted online for the first time, giving viewers a fascinating peek into indie rock history. This past week, six previously-unseen videos of the set were uploaded to YouTube by user Rad Scientist, who said they found the footage “on an old drive” that they thought was “gone forever.”
Donning matching white shirts and silly smiles in the videos, VanWyngarden and Goldwasser really seem to be having fun with each other and the music. On “Kids,” the chorus hook and signature synth riff are present,...

All’s fair in love, war, and sandwiches in Mgmt’s “Dancing in Babylon,” the indie duo’s new song with Chris of Christine and the Queens.
The new track— set to appear on Loss of Life, out Feb. 23 via Mom + Pop — is, at its core, a tender piano ballad, but with the kind of quintessentially strange undercurrents you’d expect from Mgmt. Andrew VanWyngarden and Chris combine beautifully on vocals as well, exchanging lines before hitting some sublime harmonies at the end of the bridge, “I wanna tell everyone...

Mgmt have shared the video for their new song “Nothing to Declare,” the latest single off the duo’s upcoming album Loss of Life.
The Joey Frank-directed visual stars Inga Petry, a college student born with upper limb aplasia who uses social media to spread awareness for the disabled community. In the video, Petry travels to Paris, documenting an adventure that culminates with her witnessing the Venus de Milo in person.
“When I was first approached by Joey to do this project, it was the parallelism in his vision that first drew me in.

Mgmt have released the new music video for “Bubblegum Dog,” the new single from their upcoming album, Loss of Life.
The Tom Scharpling and Julia Vickerman-directed visual pays tribute to alternative-rock videos from the Nineties. The humorous clip finds Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser hanging by a fake fire, donning cowboy hats, performing in an MTV Unplugged setting, and using soul patches, among other cheeky homages. Actor Mark Proksch (What We Do in the Shadows, The Office) makes a cameo.

Mgmt fans rejoice: not only is “Bubblegum Dog” real, but is now available to stream in full.
A meme of sorts for Mgmt fans since they released their 2018 album, Little Dark Age, “Bubblegum Dog” first entered public consciousness through a 2016 Periscope livestream that revealed the titles of several songs the band was working on at the time. Fans then expected it to be included on Little Dark Age, but when it wasn’t, it earned legendary status in the Mgmt fan community.
In the years since, the band has joked about the song, tweeting that “Bubblegum Dog is real” and humorously referring to it as a 30-minute-long, multi-part project. Even earlier this year, the band’s Ben Goldwasser joked on Reddit that Loss of Life would “be nearly three hours long to account for ‘Bubblegum Dog’ being an hour.”
In actuality, “Bubblegum Dog” spans only about four-and-a-half minutes. It begins as an acoustic track,...

Mgmt have finally confirmed their next album. Titled Loss of Life, the band’s fifth full-length arrives on February 23rd via Mom + Pop. In anticipation, the first single, “Mother Nature,” is out now.
Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser co-produced Loss of Life along with Patrick Wimberly, while their longtime collaborator Dave Fridmann handled mixing. Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never), Brian Burton (Danger Mouse), and James Richardson provide additional production on “Dancing in Babylon” — which includes the first-ever feature on an Mgmt record, thanks to Christine and the Queens. Finally, Miles A. Robinson served as associate producer and engineer on the LP.
With acoustic guitar and relaxed vocals, “Mother Nature” feels a lot more grounded than the psychedelic singles that made Mgmt famous over a decade ago. In a statement, the duo said the song “outlines the archetypical Mgmt mythology of one hero attempting to get the other hero to come...

Just a few years ago, Mgmt seemed like they were spiraling into oblivion. The psychedelic synth-pop dup of Andrew VanWyngarden and Benjamin Goldwasser exploded onto the scene back in 2007 with their debut LP, Oracular Spectacular, and the hits “Kids,” “Electric Feel,” and “Time to Pretend.” But follow-up albums Congratulations and Mgmt divided critics, baffled many fans, and failed to generate any genuine hits.

Wesleyan University’s finest Mgmt may finally be ready to release some new music.
Andrew VanWyngarden, one-half of the ever-inventive synth-pop duo, popped by the Mgmt subreddit yesterday to share a photo of a test pressing, on top of which he placed a banana. Maybe because he was about to get his daily dose of potassium, or he wanted to reference the Velvet Underground & Nico cover art. Who’s to say?

Following his live-action/animation hybrid The Congress in 2013, Waltz with Bashir director Ari Folman is finally returning this year with his long-awaited project Where Is Anne Frank. Now set to premiere at Cannes Film Festival, the first trailer has arrived for the adaptation of Anne Frank’s The Diary of a Young Girl. Notably, the film features music from Karen O and Mgmt’s Ben Goldwasser, which can be heard in the trailer.
The film, which takes place in the near future follows Kitty, Anne Frank’s imaginary friend and the one that Anne devoted her entire diary to, who magically comes to life at the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam. She believes that if she’s alive, Anne must be alive as well. She sets out on a relentless quest to find Anne.

When it comes to lowered expectations in pop, there probably isn’t a better candidate than the Avalanches’ third record. The Australian Edm combo’s debut, Since I Left You, took the art of constructing music out of samples to a heightened level of craft; that patchwork quilt of music was one of 2000’s kickiest albums. Nearly two decades passed before we heard from the Avalanches again, and when we did, time seemed to have passed them by: 2016’s Wildflower was a far less satisfying grab-bag of voices, sound effects...

Will Berman calls his current situation "an exciting time and place." The drummer and writer has spent a better part of the past decade on tour and making music with Mgmt, but he's stepping out as a film composer for the first time with his score to "Jackrabbit," which gets its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday. "After touring for seven years straight and not being able to polish skills in any other area, it's great to finally spread out and figure out something else that I can do," Berman told me this week. "It was such a pleasure to make music for a film, and I'm blown away people's response to it... it was a real lucky combination of factors." For six months, Berman collaborated with director Carleton Ranney's on coming up with the best versions of the sci-fi flick's "sparse," spacious sounds. To go along...

The Flaming Lips and some "fwends" have taken on the songs of The Beatles' "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band," and first up is an iconic little song with Miley Cyrus and Moby. Click here to listen to Miley Cyrus, Moby and Flaming Lips cover "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." Cyrus obviously bends her voice to fit the psychedelic trip on this one; but a trained singer singing purposely flat hurts my widdle hawt. It's nice to hear her step outside her wheelhouse, and, judging from the little blips of in-studio banter inserted at the beginning and end, she had at least a little fun. As you'll see the song is conveniently located on the pre-order page for the set, officially dubbed "With a Little Help From My Fwends," a title you will be embarrassed to say aloud, guaranteed. The Oklahoma-founded group has gone the way of PledgeMusic for this release,...

The beginning of Mgmt’s third self-titled studio album starts particularly…strange. Andrew Vanwyngarden’s voice is either replaced or modified by or into what sounds like the voice of a young child. It soon transforms into normal pitch, percussion kicks in, heavy and forceful, followed by soft acoustic guitar strumming and that catchy melody that is ‘Alien Days’. Mgmt have returned. And it has been quite the anticipation for anyone who is a fan of this band and genuinely appreciated their sophomore album, ‘Congratulations’, which can be argued as an introduction to what has been unveiled as their “true” sound now running psychologically and above all, musically unrestrained in this new volume of songs.
Many things are heard in this album, from Eastern scales to classic synthesizers to cerebral lyrics. Upon listening to it, one might observe that this band once popular for radio-savvy tunes...

Though it's their biggest song, the band has incited controversy by withholding "Kids" since as far back as Coachella 2010 drawing the ire of many fans in the process.
But in an interview with HuffPost Canada Music, the band's keyboardist and co-songwriter Ben Goldwasser has vowed that the song will return to the band's setlist on their upcoming tour.
"I think we're game to try it again," he says. "We've worked on a lot of different ways of playing it."
That said, they're no less bothered by fans who want to hear it. "We get kind of annoyed by people who say that we played a terrible show because we didn't play their favourite song," says Goldwasser. "There are a lot of people who...

Creator and director of the Comedy Central series Mash-Up, Jordan Vogt-Roberts manages to make an amiable debut with The Kings of Summer (retitled from the original Toy’s House during its Sundance 2013 premiere), a film that manages to recapture that nostalgic glow of teenage angst and discovery despite revolving a bit too heavily on numerous instances of grating quirk so redolent of the coming of age drama. Mgmt says it's getting ready to drop another album after working on it for nearly a year. The as-yet-untitled release was recorded entirely by founding band members Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden without the assistance of a full band, just like how they recorded 2010's Congratulations. The two albums diverge in similarity when it comes to their respective sounds, though: Goldwasser and VanWyngarden tell Rolling Stone that the new songs are more heavily influenced by house music and electronic artists such as Aphex Twin than anything they've done before. Goldwasser adds that they're "not trying to ...

Christmas greetings to all; had enough of your Mum blasting out some Bruno Mars and your Nan playing Buble on repeat, well here’s my top 10 best albums of 2011 just in time, ready for some light hearted discussion on this year’s music.
Whilst 2011 was a killer 12 months for games fans, cinema was crazily mediocre, but the music world was blessed with another good year. I was lucky enough to attend the Leeds Festival, one as usual set amongst a hectic summer schedule of mud, sweat and tears. I also found myself buying more albums as the year offered some impressively talented LPs. Below is a list of my top ten favourite albums of 2011. As I have quite a mainstream taste for music, I’d love some further suggestions on what you think are the best albums of 2011, enjoy.

We're now a few months removed from the release of Mgmt's Congratulations, which is one of the most divisive sophomore albums in recent memory. Seen as a bold step forward by some and an arrogant kiss-off to the fans who made them huge by others, the nine tracks on Congratulations leave behind a lot of the fuzzy frothiness of their smash hits "Kids" and "Time to Pretend" and instead dives even deeper into electronic purgatory and more complicated song arrangements. It was derided as their Metal Machine Music but is more like their Kid A — the album that requires a few listens in order for everything to be properly revealed and the one that may ultimately dictate their legacy.
The men of Mgmt acknowledge that the album is difficult and that they felt the negative reaction, but they think more people are coming around after they are exposed to the live show.

See that up there? That's a pretty good example of what we in the business call "a provocative headline." Because earlier today, things were sort of lousy here at Lollapalooza, weather-wise at least. It was raining off-and-on for a few hours, which not only slowly turned Grant Park into an (even muddier) pit, but also wrecked havoc with our interview schedule.
So, when we finally managed to corral one-half of Mgmt, it didn't take place on a sunny hill, overlooking the expanses of the park ... but rather tucked away in an extra-dry (and very nice) Lolla cabana. There's a reason people pay good money to rent these things for the weekend.
Anyway, while we were waiting to start our chat, we asked Ben Goldwasser and James Richardson about the weather (it's an old interview trick), which led to a lengthy discussion about just why the rain — and the accompanying slop...

Tonight is a big night for many Pajibans, as a show many of us love, "Futurama," comes back from the dead. To be quite honest, I have mixed feelings about this. I thought "The Devil's Hands are Idle Playthings" put a sweet end on the series; not too melancholy but without giving some artificial-feeling resolution to any of the characters or overarching themes. Of course, I never watched any of the movies that came afterwards so I have no clue what those tried to do to the characters or continuity. I heard one of them tried to re-write the end of "Jurassic Bark" which makes me, like every other Pajiban out there, burst into wet, sloppy sobs, and that seems misguided at best. Anyway, I'll be watching tonight, for better or for worse. Here's tonight's schedule:

It’s not as if Mgmt’s videos are in any way, shape or form linear, but we actually think we may understand what’s going on in the brand new clip for “It’s Working,” and that scares us a little. We also know it has more bright colors than a bagful of Skittles and we dig that a lot. (S35E20) Like most of the public, I only knew Gabourey Sidibe from 'Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire' (Okay, seriously, if we're gonna do that, can we put it on the end of every movie adaptation of a novel? It was one of those movies that I wasn't sure if I wanted to even watch because just looking at Sidibe in the trailers made me uncomfortable.
However, as it turned out, Sidibe is friggin' adorable. I wasn't expecting to laugh-out-loud so much during this episode, but it was super-strong all the way through, with very, very few exceptions. "Movies are not real life. That's something you should know," she sang, adding, "Mariah Carey doesn't have a mustache."
The 26-year-old then sped through a hodgepodge of largely loud-mouthed and irritated characters. She donned dreadlocks to play a Jamaican nurse hawking a heal-thyself manual opposite Kristen Wiig's Suze Orman. She...

We've only seen Gabourey Sidibe in one movie -- which was anything but funny. So we were definitely curious as to how the Oscar-nominated actress would fare in her comedic debut on "Saturday Night Live."
Sidibe's monologue played off the fact that people think she's actually like the depressing character she plays in "Precious." She explains how her real-life upbringing was quite the contrary to her fictional role: "I grew up with dreams of getting a degree in psychology, which i don't have to do anymore because I'm famous!" Sidibe breaks into song about her oh-so-wonderful life, belting out lines like, "I'm not feeling blue, I've been on 'The View.'" The jokes in her "I'm Gabourey" tune never really quite work (see above) -- but her energy is contagious. You can tells she's a little (understandably) nervous, but we give her props for a pretty good job on...

Gabourey Sidibe is getting her chuckle on as the host of "Saturday Night Live" this weekend. I have to say: it's a welcome change from her Oscar-nominated role in Lee Daniels' dark and depressing Oscar winner, "Precious." In a new photo provided to MTV News, Gabby is seen chilling with castmate Kenan Thompson on the legendary sketch comedy show's set. What were these two crazy kids up to? We won't know until we tune in on Saturday night.
In promos that have been airing, Gabby is also seen chilling with Andy Samberg. And I have to say, I'm not completely against the idea presented in the promo: that Gabby should marry Andy. Why? Well, as it turns out, Andy's parents almost named him Gabourey.
So, finally the Sambergs can have a Gabourey Samberg in the family. Life, it seems, comes full circle. Is musical guest Mgmt jealous at all?...

"Precious" star Gabourey Sidibe is hosting "Saturday Night Live" this week, and we're going to predict that her episode will be a good one.
Why? Well, part of it stems from the fact that in the few months since she became an overnight star for her role in the film, she's been nothing short of gracious, adorable and hilarious in pretty much every venue we've seen her, from awards shows to talk shows. She comes across as a genuinely sweet, funny young woman.
So, perhaps we were already predisposed to enjoying Saturday's (April 24) show. Seeing the promos Sidibe has cut with "SNL" cast member Andy Samberg has only confirmed those feelings. These 67 seconds are just about as funny as all 90 minutes of last week's subpar "SNL" outing.
Mgmt is the musical guest Saturday, which also could be pretty cool. And we're hoping that Sidibe gets to use her Bruce Willis...

Gabourey Sidibe can do the funny too. The Oscar nominated actress is the host for the upcoming Saturday Night Live (SNL) allong with Mgmt as musical guests. The clip sent to Monsters and Critics from NBC shows Gabourey Sidibe and Andy Samberg in a very funny little segment. Sidibe will be soon be seen on Showtime's "The Big C" with Laura Linney and Oliver Platt. Gabourey Sidibe hosts an all-new SNL April 24 with musical guest Mgmt.

As reported on this blog about 3 weeks ago, Gabourey Sidibe will host Saturday Night Live this Saturday, April 24th, with musical guest Mgmt.
NBC has rolled out a few promos of the episode which you can watch below. How will she do? Find out Saturday night. I certainly hope the skits are funnier than what the promo clips show. I’d expect at least 1 Precious parody. I haven’t watched SNL in forever, but I just may tune in for this one...

Ke$ha, Coheed and Cambria and more knock last week's champ Jack Johnson out of the top 10.

The critical response to Mgmt's sophomore album Congratulations has been mixed so far, but their fans had no qualms downloading the psychedelic warriors' album from iTunes. According to figures provided by iTunes, the trippy disc shot right to #1 on the iTunes albums chart this week, bumping mellow strummer Jack Johnson out of the #1 position. (In fact, after one week at the top, Johnson was out of the top 10 entirely for the sales week that ended Monday).
Mgmt were followed by Ke$ha's Animal, which likely stormed back up thanks to her appearance on "Saturday Night Live," and Coheed And Cambria's Year of the Black Rainbow, which we like to think was goosed by their win in the MTV Musical March Madness competition.

Given that Ke$ha once described her sartorial taste as "garbage chic," it's hardly surprising that her unique fashion sense took center stage during her musical-guest debut on this week's "Saturday Night Live," hosted by Ryan Phillippe.
Earlier in the week, when MTV News caught up with the "Tik Tok" singer during rehearsals, she was reluctant to reveal her wardrobe choices for the show. "All I have to say is that it might be really awesome," she teased. "Actually, I'm pretty sure it is."
While awesome may be up for interpretation, Ke$ha's two costume changes certainly were eye-catching. For her first performance, the hit single "Tik Tok," the 23-year-old took to the Studio 8H stage...

We’ve got a horse race for the No. 1 album spot next week. Will teen moppet Justin Bieber stay at No. 1 or will “Congratulations” be in order for psychedelic rockers Mgmt forge ahead to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200? It’s too soon to tell with three more days of sales. Right now, Hits Daily Double gives a slight edge to Bieber’s “My World 2.0,” in part because of the boost the title received from Bieber’s appearance on “Saturday Night Live” on April 10, but only 5,000 or so copies split the two right now. After weeks of...
