Batgirl Behind-The-Scenes Fight Sequence Footage Has Fans Calling For Scrapped Movie's Release
Image
A 43-second video featuring some never-before-seen BTS footage from the scrapped Batgirl movie has found its way online, and it shows Barbara Gordon engaging in a fairly brutal-looking scrap with several goons.

As far as we know, this is not star Leslie Grace in the Batgirl suit, but her stunt performer Emely Cartagena.

The impressively choreographed sequence has gained a lot of attention, and following the recent news that Ketchup Entertainment is in advanced negotiations to acquire the rights to Coyote Vs. Acme from Warner Bros., fans are once again calling for the release of Batgirl.

Warner Bros. Discovery boss David Zaslav's decision to shelve the HBO Max movie when it was already so deep into post-production was one of the biggest news stories of 2022, and was met with a significant amount of backlash from every corner of the industry.

The project was scrapped as a tax write-off, with...

The ‘Batgirl’ movie was supposed to bring the DC superhero to life. It starred Leslie Grace as Batgirl and featured big names like Michael Keaton and Brendan Fraser. The movie was filmed and almost finished. But in August 2022, Warner Bros. Discovery decided not to release it.

This shocked fans and people in the film industry. Some were upset, while others understood the studio’s decision. Recently, behind-the-scenes footage of the movie’s fight scenes has surfaced, making people wonder again—should ‘Batgirl’ have been released?

'Batgirl' Fight Footage Teases Canceled Leslie Grace and Michael Keaton DC Movie
Image
With Warner Bros. Discovery caught up a storm of complaints surrounding the canceled Coyote Vs. Acme movie, and the eradication of the Looney Tunes franchise from Max, it is only fitting that the ghost of another highly controversial scrapped project is coming back to haunt them. Newly unearthed fight footage from the Leslie Grace-led Batgirl movie, has renewed questions about why Wbd decided to completely abandon the project.

The footage, which features stunt performers Emely Cartagena, Scott Rogers, and Stephen Dunlevy, reveals one of the fight scenes that would have featured in the movie. As you would expect, there are some comments that have said it is probably best the movie was never released, but the vast majority disagree, and now just have even more reason to berate the studio over their decision.

Martin Scorsese, Daniel Day-Lewis Reunite at National Board of Review Awards: ‘Maybe There’s Time for One More’ Film Together
Image
Retired actor Daniel Day-Lewis made a surprise appearance at Thursday night’s National Board of Review Awards gala to honor Martin Scorsese with the best director award.

Scorsese and Day-Lewis previously worked together on 1993’s “The Age of Innocence” and 2002’s “Gangs of New York,” but if it were up to Scorsese that wouldn’t be their last collaboration. The legendary filmmaker teased that “maybe there’s time for one more” film together during his acceptance speech.

“Thank you, Daniel. To receive this honor presented by Daniel is just an honor in itself,” Scorsese said to the crowd at Manhattan’s 42 Cipriani. “We did two films together and it’s one of the greatest experiences of my life, I must say. Maybe there’s time for one more. Maybe! He’s the best.”

Day-Lewis, who retired from acting in 2017, called working with Scorsese “one of the greatest joys” of his life.

JoBlo gets behind the wheel for John Wick: Chapter 4 Home Video Release
Image
The John Wick franchise has done a masterful job from the fine folks at 87eleven Action Design. The fight sequences are always sublime. As are the car chases. And John Wick: Chapter 4 features one of the most memorable ones on the streets of Paris. The scene is an absolutely thrilling moment to watch play out. Whether on the silver screen or the small. And yet, one can only imagine what it would be like to get behind the wheel and do the stunts yourself. And this past Sunday, JoBlo had the opportunity to do just that.

Early Sunday morning, journalists and influencers gathered together, making their way to Rosamond, CA. The group headed over to the Motion Picture Driving Clinic at the Willow Springs Raceway. The second we got off the shuttle, we heard the roar of motorcycle engines racing on a nearby track. This, and the smell of...

John Wick 4 Stunt Coordinators on What Makes Keanu Reeves Special
Image
John Wick: Chapter 4 was an explosive (and potentially final) chapter in the franchise, with Director Chad Stahelski helming an impressive film. By his side throughout was a cast and crew willing and able to take action cinema to a new peak, with the film's many stunts and practical effects being among the best tricks of the trade.

To celebrate the home release of John Wick: Chapter 4 -- which is now available on DVD, Blu-Ray, 4Khd, and digitally wherever movies are sold -- Cbr got the chance to sit down with the film's Stunt Coordinator Scott Rogers and Stephen Dunlevy to talk about what makes Keanu Reeves stand out from the rest of Hollywood, their focus on safety on set despite the film's massive scope, and the state of action in modern film.

Cbr: You've worked in the John Wick franchise before. What surprised you the most during John Wick: Chapter 4?...

John Wick: Chapter 4 enraptured audiences, grossing over $431 million at the box office. In John Wick: Chapter 4, the titular anti-hero is taking the fight directly to the High Table. However, this puts a target on his back as well as the backs of everyone who has ever helped him when the High Table sends the dangerous Marquis Vincent de Gramont to end John Wick once and for all. As the Marquis targets his friends, either turning them into collateral damage or new foes for John Wick to fight, the Baba Yaga will make his final stand to protect his allies and free himself from the High Table's control once and for all.

Ballerina Stunt Coordinator Explains Ballet's Importance In John Wick Spinoff
Image
Stunt coordinator Stephen Dunlevy explains how ballet influences the action sequences in Ballerina and why it is so important in the world of John Wick. Ballerina will follow a young new assassin, played by Ana de Armas, who is being trained at the same ballet academy that John Wick was trained at. Ballerina is the first spinoff of the action franchise and will focus on a new character, although John Wick, Winston, and Charon will all make appearances. During an exclusive interview with Screen Rant for the home release of John Wick: Chapter 4, stunt coordinator Stephen Dunlevy teased Ballerina's action. He discussed how ballet fits into the world of the Keanu Reeves-led franchise, namely how they will influence the John Wick spinoff's action scenes and the emotion behind them. How John Wick: Chapter 4's Editor Made Donnie Yen's Caine A 'Different Beast' In One Key Way
Image
I don't envy the editor of "John Wick: Chapter 4." Director Chad Stahelski basically used Lionsgate's money to shoot wildly extravagant action and combat sequences that went beyond anything in the previous "John Wick" movies — which, considering the action movie majesty of the "John Wick" franchise, is saying something.

Remember that club fight sequence in "Chapter 4," where Keanu Reeves' assassin faces off against stunt legend Scott Adkins in a fat suit? According to the film's stunt coordinators Stephen Dunlevy and Scott Rogers, it was actually the most challenging scene to film and believe it or not, was initially twice as long as what you see in the final movie. Then there's that entire third act that's basically one long action montage, as Baba Yaga fights his way across Paris toward his final showdown with Bill Skarsgård's Marquis Vincent de Gramont. And all of this even after Stahelski cut...

‘We Give a Sh*t’: Gun Safety Defines the John Wick Franchise as Much as the Weapons Do
John Wick
Of the many weapons that mythic assassin John Wick has used to kill hundreds of bad guys over the span of four movies, a gun still best defines him — and the series.

“No one does guns more than we do,” says “John Wick” director Chad Stahelski, a former stuntman. With the four films in the franchise, Stahelski has taken “gun-fu” (a balletic blend of martial arts and gunfighting) to new commercial and creative heights even as the use of guns on set has become hotly debated since the death of “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

“John Wick: Chapter 4” was in production in Paris when the incident happened in October 2021, but though there was intense concern for those involved, the “Wick” set wasn’t shaken — primarily because Stahelski has gone to great lengths to create a culture of safety and preparedness around the weaponry.

“There is no reason to have a...

Keanu Reeves Wonders If John Wick 4 Went Too Far With Its Car Stunts
Image
"John Wick: Chapter 4" is the culmination of everything the franchise has attempted and achieved so far. It shows how you properly build an expansive universe and it introduces incredible new side characters all while, of course, having bombastic action that should (and does) shame the entire American action movie industry.

Despite the movie being almost three hours long, it flies by, in no small part due to the nonstop action that feels like a Greek myth brought to life. This is particularly true of the film's last hour, which is a spectacular action scene filled with moments that rival "Mad Max: Fury Road" in terms of how unbelievable it is that no one died making those scenes.

And yet, there can be too much of a good thing, at least if you ask Keanu Reeves himself. Speaking to Variety, the actor pondered the question of whether the team had...

How The John Wick 4 Stunt Coordinators Pulled Off That Jaw-Dropping, Back-Breaking Stairs Scene [Exclusive]
Image
This post contains spoilers for "John Wick: Chapter 4."

For what could very well be the final major set piece in the mainline "John Wick" series (spinoffs are coming), it makes sense that director Chad Stahelski and his incredible team of stunt performers would want to create the biggest, loudest scene they could. The climax ends up being a triptych of a sequence that takes place at three different locations: the Arc de Triomphe, an abandoned house of some kind, and finally the massive staircase leading to Sacré-Cœr. Some, including myself, would say it's a bit too much action, but there are unquestionably moments within this nearly 40 minute stretch that I marveled at.

Mostly, this occurred on the staircase, with dozens of assassins attempting to take down Keanu Reeves' titular hero before reaching the top for his duel with the Marquis de Gramont (Bill Skarsgård). Where it differs from the...

John Wick 4 Stunt Coordinators Explain How To Get Hit By A Car ... Safely [Exclusive]
Image
This post contains spoilers for "John Wick: Chapter 4."

In the rather extended, multi-armed climax of Chad Stahelski's latest entry in the greatest modern action franchise, "John Wick: Chapter 4," the title character (Keanu Reeves) finds himself dodging a literal army of assassins in the streets of Paris. John Wick is on his way to a climactic duel, but has to spend nearly 40 straight minutes of the film (not an exaggeration) getting past hundreds of murderous thugs before he can get there. A portion of his fight takes Mr. Wick to the traffic circle around the Arc de Triomphe, where he takes control of first a car, then a motorcycle, firing bullets into every adversary that wanders into his field of vision. During this deadly kerfuffle, John Wick is hit by numerous cars, bounces off of windshields, flips onto hoods, and generally suffers all manner of vehicular trauma. Because he is John Wick,...

Why John Wick: Chapter 4's Club Sequence Was The Most Challenging Scene To Film [Exclusive]
Image
This article contains spoilers for "John Wick: Chapter 4."

"John Wick: Chapter 4" is an action movie spectacle. The same could be said of the three previous films in the franchise but, this time around, director Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves pulled precisely no punches. For most of the movie's nearly three-hour runtime, it's insane action sequence after insane action sequence, with only mere moments left for the audience to catch its breath. But what was the hardest scene to film? Logistically, the club sequence featuring B-movie superstar Scott Adkins was a true challenge.

/Film's own Vanessa Armstrong spoke with the film's stunt coordinators Stephen Dunlevy and Scott Rogers in honor of its release in theaters this weekend. Speaking of the club scene, Rogers explained "that water was no joke. There was a lot of water there." Indeed there was. How did that complicate matters, exactly? Dunlevy had this to...

John Wick: Chapter 4 Stunt Coordinators On The Violent Ballet Of The Movie's Epic Fight Scenes [Exclusive Interview]
Image
This post contains spoilers for "John Wick: Chapter 4."

To say there are a lot of impressive action sequences and set pieces in "John Wick: Chapter 4" is an understatement. The movie, especially the last hour, is a non-stop assault on your senses as you follow Keanu Reeves' John Wick as he falls out of buildings, gets hit by cars, and falls down way too many flights of stairs.

That stair sequence, it turns out, impressed the stunt coordinators on the film as well. "It was one of the most impressive days of a performer I've ever seen in my 32-year career," Scott Rogers told me when I interview him and his fellow stunt coordinator, Stephen Dunlevy, about their work on "Wick." That long, long fall is one take, and one that "Wick" stunt double Vincent Bouillon did an impressive four times.

I spoke with Rogers and Dunlevy about many...

How Ballerina's Fight Sequences Differ From John Wick's
Image
Stunt Coordinator Stephen Dunlevy explains how the action sequences in Ballerina will differ from the John Wick films. The world of John Wick is expanding beyond the titular character's revenge story with a spin-off movie, Ballerina, and an upcoming spin-off series, The Continental. Ballerina will explore the perspective of a new character, played by Ana de Armas, who is training at the same ballet academy that John Wick trained at to become an assassin.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant for John Wick: Chapter 4, Dunlevy teased a different style of action in Ballerina. He broke down how the characters influence the fighting style with Wick being a seasoned cooperative while de Armas' character is still learning. Check out what Dunlevy had to say below:

Stephen Dunlevy: You're dealing with John Wick, with Keanu, that character. You're dealing with a kind of grizzled, older combat veteran. He's seen it all; done at all.

John Wick 4 Stunt Coordinator Created A Ballet Of Violence With Keanu Reeves And Donnie Yen [Exclusive]
Image
Creating the fight choreography and stunts for a "John Wick" flick is a pretty massive responsibility. The films hinge on the fierce and frenetic fight scenes: People flock to theaters to see John Wick (Keanu Reeves) fight in both hand-to-hand combat and various kinds of gun-fu with a whole host of baddies. For "John Wick: Chapter 4," the latest and greatest sequel in the franchise, stunt coordinators Stephen Dunlevy and Scott Rogers really had their work cut out for them, creating fight scenes between Reeves and martial arts legends like Donnie Yen and Hiroyuki Sonata. Look, this is a franchise that was created by a stuntman (series creator and director Chad Stahelski), so these stunts have to be immaculate.

In an upcoming exclusive interview with /Film's Vanessa Armstrong, Dunlevy and Rogers shared the stories behind bringing a brutal "ballet of violence" to life onscreen. When you're working with performers as dedicated as Reeves,...

‘Army of One’ Review
Image
Stars: Ellen Hollman, Matt Passmore, Stephen Dunlevy, Geraldine Singer | Written by David Dittlinger, Ellen Hollman, Mary Ann Barnes, Stephen Durham | Directed by Stephen Durham

No, this is not me revisiting that bonkers Nicolas Cage Flick from a couple of years back… This Army of One features Ellen Hollman, a superstar bad-ass leading lady in waiting!

Sometimes a simple premise, executed very well, can get you most of the way. There is no simpler movie concept than a family member going out for revenge for a murdered loved one. If there is then please do correct me but I feel like these stories have been done to death. It is only every once in a while that something like Taken, Death Wish or Law Abiding Citizen comes along and revitalizes things and then we are back to square one when, for the following years, everything is a carbon copy.

So how...

Mel Gibson in Mad Max (1979)
Two More Mad Max Sequels Will Eventually Happen, But It'll Be a Minute
Mel Gibson in Mad Max (1979)
A few years back Mad Max and The Road Warrior director George Miller unleashed the fourth entry in the Max Rockatansky saga with Mad Max: Fury Road starring Tom Hardy as Max and Charlize Theron as the mighty Imperator Furiosa. And today we have word from Miller himself that two Mad Max sequels are still in development, including a film centering on Charlize Theron's Furiosa.

Specifically, George Miller says about his planned Mad Max sequels that have been tentatively titled Wasteland and Furiosa.

"There are two stories, both involving Mad Max, and also a Furiosa story. It seems to be pretty clear that it's going to happen."

Nice! Now I don't know about you, but I firmly belong in the camp that screams Mad Max: Fury Road is one of the most excellent motion pictures to hit the big screen in decades. In fact, along with Joel and Ethan Coen...

Contest: Celebrate Logan on Blu-ray by winning screen-used props from the film
Logan, the latest and reportedly final chapter of the cinematic adventures of Wolverine, is out on Digital HD now, and hits Blu-ray and DVD next week. And to celebrate what our film editor A.A. Dowd calls “close to the Unforgiven of superhero cinema” and “a terrific movie, no ’comic-book’ qualifier required,” we’re giving away not only copies of the Blu-ray, but two original, screen-used props from the film itself.

Two grand prize winners will each win a prop from the film: One, the dusty, but still usable backpack Logan (Hugh Jackman) carries in the movie, and another, the gauntlet and glove worn by cyborg baddie Macon (Stephen Dunlevy). Each of those will come with a copy of Logan on Blu-ray, which includes audio commentary from director James Mangold, deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes documentary, and the black-and-white Logan Noir version of the film. In addition to that, we’ll...

Logan Review: Excellent Jackman plus Lots of Violence and Expletives End Wolverine Trilogy with Big Bang
'Logan' movie with Hugh Jackman as the mutant Wolverine: 20th Century Fox's gamble results in one of the best superhero movies. 'Logan' movie review: 'Wolverine' trilogy concluded 'in surprising and rewarding fashion' The trailer for Logan, the final film in the standalone Wolverine trilogy, is set to Johnny Cash's funereal cover of “Hurt,” the already-depressing song by Nine Inch Nails. If there was ever a warning that a superhero film was going to trudge down a grim path, that's as unsubtle an indication as you're gonna get. It's a warning worth heeding, though. Logan is a long, grave, and violent neo-Western; a Dark Knight of the soul that earns its R-rating before its first scene is complete. For audiences whose appetite for Marvel's vaguely juvenile destructo-thons has congealed into cultural obligation and drudgery, Logan is a welcome expansion of what a superhero saga can be. And even...

Logan First Look at Richard E. Grant as Dr. Zander Rice
Hugh Jackman in Logan (2017)
Over the past few months, Logan star Hugh Jackman, director James Mangold and the Wponx Instagram account have been sharing cryptic new photos from this highly-anticipated superhero adventure, which hits theaters on March 3, 2017. Through these photos, we've gotten confirmation that Dafne Keen is playing the mutant clone X-23, along with our first looks at Boyd Holbrook's Donald Pierce, Stephen Merchant's Caliban and much more. Today, Hugh Jackman himself has debuted yet another new photo, which confirms that Richard E. Grant is playing an important character that has roots in the Marvel Comics.

The actor debuted the photo today from his Twitter account, featuring our first look at Richard E. Grant, with the photo's caption reading, "Rice. Logan. 3.3.17," which confirms that Richard E. Grant is playing none other than Dr. Zander Rice, one of the creators of the mutant clone X-23 in the original Marvel comics. In the comics,...

X-23's Origins Teased in Latest Logan Photo
Hugh Jackman in Logan (2017)
For the past few months, the official Instagram from the highly-anticipated Logan has been sending out a slew of mysterious photos from this movie. While some are merely portraits of actors such as Patrick Stewart, others are quite cryptic, such as the image of the bullet-riddled limousine that many believe could be a hint that Patrick Stewart's Professor X may be killed off. Today we have yet another mysterious image that may provide hint at X-23's origins.

The Instagram photo doesn't actually show actress Dafne Keen as Laura Kinney, a.k.a X-23, but it does feature a number of supplies, including one device which may actually be used to inject mutant powers into X-23. You may recall that, during the post-credits sequence of X-Men: Apocalypse, a mystery man was seen taking a vial of Wolverine's blood, which may be used to create the mutant clone X-23.

The...

Logan Kills in Deadly New Wolverine 3 Photo
Hugh Jackman in Logan (2017)
Hugh Jackman is seen having just killed a man in a new photo from Logan, which is set to hit theaters nationwide on March 3, 2017. This latest image comes courtesy of the movie's Instagram, which recently confirmed the mutant X-23 with a photo that debuted last month. While we don't get too many details from this latest photo, it appears that Logan is awaiting a second round of attacks after taking down an assailant in his yard.

This photo falls in line with the mysterious nature of the previous Instagram images, which often pose more questions than answers. We don't get any details about who's house this is, or who Hugh Jackman's Logan just slaughtered. Hopefully we'll find out more as we get closer to the March 3, 2017 release date, which will go up against Lionsgate's The Shack and Open Road Films' Before the Fall.

The first trailer for Logan debuted last month,...

Logan Photo Confirms X-23's Presence in Wolverine 3
Hugh Jackman in Logan (2017)
Even before filming started earlier this year on Logan, there had been a number of rumors that the popular Marvel Comics mutant Laura Kinney, a.k.a. X-23, will be featured in this story. When production got under way, there were set photos that showcased an unidentified young girl alongside Hugh Jackman, but it was never confirmed to be X-23. Today, both director James Mangold and the movie's official Instagram account sent out a new photo of actress Dafne Keen as Laura/X-23. Logan marks Dafne Keen's feature film debut, after starring in seven episodes of The Refugees TV series.

The Instagram photo only says "Laura," and while the actress isn't identified, Dafne Keen is listed on Logan's updated IMDb page as Laura Kinney/X-23. Many fans assumed that X-23 would be a part of this story, after the post-credit sequence of X-Men: Apocalypse showed a mystery character...

Wolverine 3 Director Explains Logan's Scars
Hugh Jackman in Logan (2017)
Earlier this month, 20th Century Fox finally unveiled that the official title for Wolverine 3 is Logan, while releasing the first poster. Many fans noticed that Wolverine's hands were scarred, which is quite unusual since his mutant healing powers don't leave scars. Now that the first trailer has been released, director James Mangold finally spoke about Wolverine's new scars.

Many fans believed that this story will be based on the Old Man Logan comics, but it was never confirmed. After the Logan title was released, a number of cryptic photos started to surface on various social media accounts, the last of which showed Logan's scarred face. Empire caught up with director James Mangold, who revealed exactly why they gave Logan scars in this movie, for the first time in franchise history. Here's what he had to say below.

"One of the things we all thought about as we worked on this film is,...

Logan Photos Confirm the Reavers as Main Wolverine 3 Villains
Hugh Jackman in Logan (2017)
Over the past few weeks, either star Hugh Jackman, director James Mangold, or the official Instagram account for 20th Century Fox's Logan has been releasing cryptic new photos from this highly-anticipated movie. Today it's the Instagram account's turn, with a new photo that confirms a long-rumored group of villains known as the Reavers. We also have some new details about the primary villain, Donald Pierce, played by Boyd Holbrook.

The Instgram features an actor identified by several outlets as David Kallaway, but who was later confirmed to be Stephen Dunlevy. The Instagram post shows the actor aiming a large rifle at an unseen enemy, with the caption only reading "Reaver." In the comics at least, Reavers were a group of criminal cyborgs who were bent on destroying the mutant X-Men, and they have a particular disliking for Wolverine specifically. This group was formed by none other than Donald Pierce, so...

Fast and Furious 'Road' Review: Make No Mistake - Mad Max Is Heroine Furiosa's Handy Sidekick
'Mad Max: Fury Road' poster with Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky 'Mad Max: Fury Road' review: 'A good movie on its own terms' Mad Max, the first feature film of director George Miller and the second for the then 23-year-old Mel Gibson, premiered in North America in Feb. 1980. I was 17 years old, crazy about cars and revenge movies, and generally ripe for the picking. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, followed in 1981, deepening devotees' affection for the character and his car. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985), was the third film in the series and was equally anticipated, though it has worn over time. It co-starred the Silent Dancer herself, Tina Turner, and her current hit of the day, the name of which I cannot remember and don't want to look.* I saw each of them at the time of its respective North American release and relished in them all. Yet I...
