Anime has no shortage of incredibly iconic characters who get fans hyped and move loads of merchandise. Given the success these high-profile characters have brought to their creators, fans might be surprised to learn that their creators aren't always enamored with them. The biggest names behind fan-favorite anime and manga series all have wildly different relationships to their most popular creations.
While some anime and manga creators absolutely love the characters they've crafted, others delight in revealing that some of their most popular characters are the ones they hate the most. Sometimes this is evident in the stories themselves, with the creator finding excuses to keep fan favorites out of the limelight. Still, regardless of how their creators feel, the icons of anime and manga always find a way to weasel themselves back to the forefront of their story and of fan attention.

It's no understatement to say that women are the backbone of anime, naturally making fans try to rank the greatest female anime characters. While male anime protagonists are still generally the norm, anime still offers a wealth of interesting female characters that can't help but steal the show. From strong leading ladies to heart-wrenching love interests, no matter the plot or genre of the anime, female anime characters have captured the hearts of fans.
Though stereotypes might reduce women in anime to one-dimensional love interests, the truth is that women in anime are just as diverse as their male counterparts. Though shojo anime is always a great source of female characters, even shonen anime has its share of interesting women. Great female characters can be found in every genre of anime, making ranking the best difficult. In a way, the best female anime characters can almost be considered a reflection...

Anime speeches can be some of the most exciting moments in the entire series. They usually feature a single character speaking to dozens, if not hundreds, of other characters at once, rallying their friends into a moment of pure bravery. Some speeches are much smaller in scale, but leave just as big of an impact on the people who heard them. No matter the nature of the speech, a character going on a several minute tirade to explain their ideals is always fun to watch.
Great anime speeches vary in their purpose. Some are used to encourage troops, others are to reveal hidden truths, but they're all incredibly meaningful. Speeches like Tanya's from Tanya the Evil highlight just how insanely committed their characters are to their cause. Speeches like Erwin Smith's from Attack on Titan also show a brave level of commitment, and are so unreasonably exciting, fans can't...

Strong characters are a dime a dozen in the world of anime, which is why it's so impressive when characters are able to compete with near-demi gods sheerly thanks to their intellect. While a lot of shows are about a strong character, or a character getting strong, smart characters have their own place among anime's elite. Characters like Shikamaru from Naruto are so smart, that they're able to overcome the biggest problems by simply using their brain. Other characters like Ayanokoji from Classroom of the Elite still use their intelligence, albeit for less noble means.
Intelligent characters in anime are always hard to understand. They're thinking a few steps ahead of everyone in their own series, and the viewer as well. It takes a lot of skill to write a character so smart that they're in a league of their own. Whenever an anime series does feature an extra-smart character,...

KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! is the funniest isekai series of all time. It features one of the most frustratingly lovable cast of characters, a world filled with mystery, and some of the best writing in anime, all genres included. When Satou Kazuma is transported to his new world, he's allowed to bring any one thing with him. When the Goddess Aqua laughs at him during this process, he decides to take her instead, creating a hilarious dynamic within the first episode.
To be a great show like KonoSuba, an isekai series needs to have some element of humor. It also needs to have good animation, and at least decent writing. While no show can truly compare with KonoSuba's outrageous humor, some can get close. Still, there are plenty of isekai series out there that are great for anyone who loves watching Kazuma, Darkness, Aqua, and Megumin bumble their way to success.

Overlord is a popular isekai series that marries brutality and humor to create a hilarious show that's not afraid of exploring darker themes. The star at the center of the series is Ainz Ooal Gown. He's left alone in the video game Yggdrasil, but before he was trapped, he was one of the strongest characters in the game. Now he's alone with only his NPCs to keep him company. After discovering his new situation, he set out to dominate the entire world in the hopes that he could find another person like him.

One-man-army moments in anime can capture the feeling of a single character being strong enough to take on legions of foes. While there are plenty of powerful people in anime, only a select few have the bloodlust, skill, and otherworldly abilities needed to single-handedly destroy all of their enemies. To be a one-man army, a character can't have any allies to help them. Usually, they become one-man-armies to defend their friends, or in some villain's cases, to go on the offensive.
Every one-man-army moment is a thrill to watch. They're jaw-dropping spectacles filled with great animation and usually end up being some of the best fights in anime. No matter if the one-man-army is fighting for good or for evil, their enemies should be worried. One-man-armies don't go down without a fight, and most times, they don't even go down with a fight either.

Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World is a bleak isekai anime starring Natsuki Subaru. Subaru is transported to a new world, and like most isekai protagonists, he gets a new power. Unlike most other isekai protagonists, Subaru's power is brutal. Called Return by Death, Subaru's power works exactly as the name implies, as he's allowed to return to a predetermined point in time once he dies. It allows him to solve a lot of the mysteries within the series, but not without dying each time.
To be a good show like Re:Zero, a series doesn't even need to be an isekai. The biggest theme in Re:Zero is how bleak life can be, and thanks to Subaru's relentless determination, how to overcome that bleakness. The best shows that can be compared to Re:Zero have to involve a little bit of darkness, melancholy, and some existential dread at the same time.

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is one of the best isekai series of all time. It features one of the biggest and richest worlds in isekai, great, well-rounded characters, and an incredibly divisive main character in Rudeus Greyrat.
