James grew up in Islamorada Florida. (The Florida Keys) His father taught him to SCUBA dive in the ocean at the age of 6. His first open water dive was at Alligator Lighthouse.

James was part of the University of Central Florida 2001 Small Coed Cheerleading squad that won 2nd Place at the UCA National Cheerleading Championship.

James soloed a glider (Blanik L-13) in the Grand Tetons at the age of 14 earning his Solo Glider License. At 25 he completed his Single Engine Land (SEL) Private Pilot Rating and Glider Rating. From 2010 to 2012 he was a part owner in an Aeronca Champ 7AC.
