Leading Italian actor, playwright and militant leftwing politician who was the wife and professional partner of Dario Fo
Franca Rame, who has died aged 84, was one of Italy's most admired stage performers and playwrights. A leftwing militant, she was elected to the Italian senate in 2006 but resigned within two years, saying the assembly was an icebox of feelings. But Rame was best known as the wife and professional partner of the actor-playwright Dario Fo. In spite of their ups and downs, which they themselves pilloried in a one-act play, Coppia Aperta (The Open Couple, 1982), she remained at his side on stage and off. When Fo received the Nobel prize for literature in 1997, he called Rame his muse and shared the medal with her.

As third-party hero Gary Johnson cements his status as the most viable alternative presidential candidate in recent memory (the Libertarian challenger to Obama-Romney broke the 10 percent mark in one recent poll of Ohio voters), it appears clear to marijuana-minded voters that there's no better friend at the ballot box than the former New Mexico governor.
Well. Hold your horses, cannabis users: Roseanne Barr -- yes, as in that "Roseanne" -- is on your side, too.
The former sitcom star and Peace and Freedom Party presidential nominee gave a brief but memorable address at Oaksterdam University last night, during which she praised medical marijuana as a tonic for her glaucoma as well as for the government's mind control.

The 'spirit of the fringe' is pitted against capitalism as awards director dismisses standup's complaints about commercialisation of Edinburgh comedy
Best of this week's news
Halfway through week one of the fringe, and the big story is – well, pretty much the same as last week's big story. Stewart Lee's broadside against the commercialisation of Edinburgh comedy (see below) set the agenda for the opening days of festival 2012, with Edinburgh comedy award director Nica Burns responding to it in her annual pep talk at the weekend. Burns dismissed Lee's grumble as part of "a bit of competition to create controversy", and set against his claims the argument that free shows are now as important to the fringe as ticketed events. Free events now number more than 800 in the fringe programme, compared with 177 free shows in 2006.
Elsewhere in Edinburgh, the promoter who last week had her charity comedy gig pulled at...

Roseanne Barr has entered the Us presidential race as the official candidate of the Peace and Freedom Party. The Roseanne star attended the minor political party's convention in Los Angeles on Saturday, where she and running mate Cindy Sheehan successfully won the nomination. "Cindy and I are the 'Throw the Bums Out' ticket and the 'Ballot Access' ticket," Barr told the delegates. "The American people are sick and tired of this 'lesser evil' garbage they get fed every election year. Both the Democrats and the Republicans do the same evils once they're in office." Barr went on to urge voters to help her combat the "evil" of America's two largest political parties. "I'm here to tell the (more)...

Roseanne Barr has put herself forward as a presidential candidate for the second time, reports Sky News. Barr, who rose to fame in the '90s with her sitcom Roseanne, has joined the Peace And Freedom Party after an earlier bid to become the Green Party's nominee was unsuccessful. According to the Peace And Freedom Party party's website, the organisation was founded in 1967 and advocates free education, abortion on demand and "is committed to socialism, democracy, ecology, feminism and racial equality". The comedian's vice presidential running mate is anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan. She will accompany the 59-year-old to the party's convention in Los Angeles this weekend, where they will face four other presidential hopefuls. Barr, who now farms macadamia nuts in Hawaii and last year featured in a reality TV show called Roseanne's (more)...

Wacky Osama bin Laden conspiracy theories have been circulating ever since September 11. Josh Dzieza on calls for photos of his corpse as proof that the manhunt is really over. Plus, The Daily Beast's full coverage of bin Laden's death.
When British papers posted images of Osama bin Laden's bloody corpse, several conspiracy-minded websites pounced, decrying the photographs as fakes. They were right. The picture was a poorly photo-shopped image that has kicked around the Internet for years, chiefly to illustrate the many false reports of bin Laden's death. Publishing the fake images "makes little sense," writes Paul Joseph Watson, "unless of course, somebody is trying to hide something."

People looking for an excuse to raise their eyebrows hardly needed the fake photographs when they had bin Laden's speedy ocean burial. "I am sorry, but if you believe the newest death of Obl,...

President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, just can’t catch a break. El presidente’s arch nemesis from the Iraq War Part Deux has resurfaced—and we’re not referring to Saddam: anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan held a protest with about 50 people near the Bushes’ new Dallas digs yesterday. And in other Bush news, W.’s dad, President George H. W. Bush, is set to jump from a plane tomorrow to celebrate his 85th birthday. Poppy is no stranger to skydiving—he marked his 75th and 80th birthdays with similar big jumps, and even skydived to safety after being shot down as a 20-year-old Navy pilot in World War II. Unlike his perilous war-time plunge, however, the ex-potus will have the warm company of news anchor Robin Meade for the upcoming tandem jump. Let’s pray that Poppy can still rise to the occasion and tug the parachute string in time.

Tonight, The Big Picture will host a special Phoenix Film Foundation screening of Crawford, a documentary about what happens to the town of Crawford, Texas (population 800ish) when George W. Bush decides to move there while a Presidential candidate back in the late 1990s.
Crawford was a sleepy little town until W. came to town, and brought with him hordes of media as well as the Cindy Sheehan protests and some other dust-ups the residents weren't really accustomed to seeing. I suppose, like any town, Crawford has a diversity of opinion, so to see how such a small town reacts not just to the attention thrust upon it but also the success and failures of its most famous resident impact it should make for a good couple of hours at the movies.
Premiering last year at South by Southwest, Crawford has done the festival circuit for a while and now winds up here in Phoenix,...

On September 13, 2001, Tomas Young watched President Bush stand atop the demolished World Trade Center and promise to smoke the evildoers out of their holes. Young decided to join the army to do his part, with the expectation that he'd be sent to Afghanistan. But less than three years later, he was stationed in Sadr City with too little training and too little armor, and within five days, he caught a bullet in the spine and returned home paralyzed. He joined an organization called Iraq Veterans Against The War, and after getting married, spent his honeymoon at Camp Casey in Crawford, Tx, in support of Cindy Sheehan. Phil Donahue and Ellen Spiro's documentary Body Of War cuts between Young's daily life—which involves a lot of travel, speeches, and interviews, along with a lot of medication—and the October 2002 Senate debate over the "Authorization for Use of Military Force...

Austin It was a big day. One interview and four films scheduled. It all began with the documentary "Crawford." It was all about the city that George W. Bush made famous by moving there before his run for presidency. The film is definitely slanted a little to the left and the political conversation has been done before, but it does a good job of capturing the people of the small town and the time when Cindy Sheehan decided to set up her protest. Next I grabbed a bite at Joe's to enjoy the greatest tuna melt sandwich of all time, then I sprinted over to the Four Season's to interview Seann William Scott. Ouch. Scott didn't show, it's all part of the business and I quickly shrugged it off and prepared to...

Sarandon's Mother's Day Protest
Crusading actress Susan Sarandon gave up her Mother's Day in America yesterday to spend it with the protesting parents of soldiers in Iraq. Accompanied by anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan, whose son has died in the conflict, Sarandon addressed a 24-hour vigil opposite the White House by reading out a letter she had written to First Lady Laura Bush. She also brandished a copy of the board game Risk to highlight the dangerous plight of US soldiers serving abroad. Her letter called on the president's wife to force George W. Bush to personally notify mothers that their sons had been killed in action. She said, "Those moms praying as they wait for the phone to ring and they hear the voice of their child serving in Iraq. Let him be the one to tell them that this week the call will not be coming." The 200-strong Washington protest was organized by women's anti-war group Code Pink.

Mortensen Defends Bush Criticism
The Lord Of The Rings star Viggo Mortensen refuses to apologize for his recent attack on President George W. Bush - maintaining the political leader is a "beast." The outspoken actor hit out at Bush after his controversial handling of Hurricane Katrina, but also disagrees with the President's Iraq policies, gossip site The Scoop reports. He fumes, "I'm not anti-Bush; I'm anti-Bush behavior. In other words, I'm against cheating, greed, cruelty, racism, imperialism, religious fundamentalism, treason, and the seemingly limitless capacity for hypocrisy shown by Bush and his administration. Cindy Sheehan (peace activist whose son was killed in Iraq) and how badly Katrina was bungled are two shots to the heart. I hope the beast does fall down soon."...
