One of the most pivotal events of Star Trek's 21st century happens right now. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 3, episodes 11 & 12, "Past Tense", takes Commander Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig), and Lieutenant Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell) back to the first week of September 2024. Dax is helped by billionaire Chris Brynner (Jim Metzler), whereas the police assume that Sisko and Bashir are part of San Francisco's unhoused population, and take them to the city's Sanctuary District, where disenfranchised residents are subject to systemic violence, inequity, and hostility. This tension leads to the historic Bell Riots, and the start of sweeping social changes.
This part of the Star Trek timeline was recently revisited in Star Trek: Picard season 2, when La Sirena's crew traveled to Los Angeles in April 2024. As a nod to Star Trek: DS9's "Past Tense", signs for Los Angeles' Sanctuary District are visible in the background of Picard's sets.

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Star Trek: Prodigy season 2!
Lt. Tom Paris and Nick Locarno were both played by Robert Duncan McNeill, which Star Trek: Lower Decks had fun with in season 4. Star Trek: Prodigy reveals that Tom Paris designed Mark 2 Nova Flyers for Starfleet after leaving Voyager. Through characters like Maj'el and the return of Wesley Crusher, Prodigy redeems Nova Squadron after Nick Locarno's two scandals.
Star Trek: Voyager's Lt. Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill) finally has a confirmed link to his Star Trek: The Next Generation doppelgnger, Nick Locarno. Robert Duncan McNeill made his Star Trek debut as Nick Locarno in Tng season 5, episode 19, "The First Duty". A member of Starfleet Academy's elite Nova Squadron, Locarno was involved in a scandalous cover-up that resulted in his expulsion. While Locarno was initially considered as the helmsman for the USS Voyager, the show's producers instead created a more redeemable character in Tom Paris.

Star Trek: Prodigy fixes Starfleet Academy's elite cadets problem by embodying true Starfleet ideals. Prodigy's Nova Squadron is elite but not elitist, showcasing kindness and humility. Elite cadets can be flawed yet heroic, as seen in Star Trek's new class of heroes in the 2380s.
After 26 years, Star Trek has finally fixed one of its biggest Starfleet Academy problems. In Star Trek: The Next Generation season 5, episode 19, "The First Duty", Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) is now a Starfleet Academy cadet and a member of Nova Squadron, a flight team made up of elite cadets that also includes Sito Jaxa (Shannon Fill), Nick Locarno (Robert Duncan McNeill), and Jean Hajar (Walker Brandt). Locarno convinces the rest of Nova Squadrun to cover up the death of teammate Josh Albert, who perished when Nova Squadron performed the dangerous Kolvoord Starburst maneuver. Wesley speaks up, and Nova Squadron is disbanded.

Star Trek: Prodigy's season 2 was a great way to end the series, tying up loose ends and showing character growth. The finale's time-travel plot closed the loop and brought back classic Tng elements, pleasing fans of all ages. Connections to Picard and Voyager added depth, tying in key events and setting up potential future stories.
While it would be great to see more Star Trek: Prodigy, the ending of season 2 serves as a great send-off for the young crew members of the USS Protostar. Following Dal R'El (Brett Gray) and his ragtag group of friends, Prodigy was the first Star Trek geared specifically toward children. Despite this, the show has something for Trek fans of all ages, with numerous connections to past Star Trek shows. Ma'jel and Dal in Star Trek: Prodigy replicate Kirk and Spock's dynamic as Starfleet Academy rivals with mutual respect. Lt. T'Lyn and Lt. Brad Boimler in Star Trek: Lower Decks mirror Spock and Kirk's relationship, with T'Lyn using Vulcan logic to temper Boimler's anxiety. Captain Michael Burnham and Captain Saru in Star Trek: Discovery share a close friendship and working relationship similar to Kirk and Spock, with Saru as a rational observer to Burnham's risk-taking.
Star Trek's long-running partnership between James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Spock (Leonard Nimoy) is so enduring that the franchise often seeks to replicate it. Spock provided a rational counterpoint to Kirk's rasher tendencies, making them a winning partnership that saved the galaxy countless times. Kirk and Spock's dynamic is a winning formula that has been repeated many times in other Star Trek TV shows and movies.

This Star Trek: Prodigy article contains spoilers.
Starfleet Academy might be a school for the best and the brightest of the Federation, but it is still a school, complete with its cliques and bullies. That’s what the kids of Star Trek: Prodigy learn in the first episode of the animated series’ long-awaited season two premiere.
Now in the Alpha Quadrant after escaping the Delta Quadrant and the evil Diviner, the Prodigy kids are now on Earth and hoping to gain acceptance to Starfleet Academy. That application gets a boost when Admiral Janeway brings them aboard Voyager for a mission to find the lost Chakotay. But as Voyager‘s Doctor (once again voiced by Robert Picardo) escorts the kids to their stations, they run into a trio of haughty pre-cadets, who sport fancy insignias.
These three pre-cadets hope to become members of Nova Squadron, a once-forgotten unit that has gotten a lot of attention lately.

The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy delivers positive LGBTQ+ representation and compelling humor throughout season 1. Other animated sci-fi series can learn from the Amazon show's approach to LGBTQ+ characters. There are other animated series that feature the humor and representation that Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy benefits from.
The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy is Amazon's hilarious new sci-fi series, and it features great LGBTQ+ representation — so much so that it may leave viewers searching for more animated comedies with LGBTQ+ characters. Dr. Klak's mental health storyline takes up much of her character arc in The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy season 1, but viewers also get a look at her love life during the first batch of episodes. Dr. Klak is a queer character who shows interest in women — including Dr. Zypha, the hospital's new dendropathologist — and previously had a relationship with the non-binary Dr. Azel.

It’s been 10 years since Steven Universe unlocked his Gem ability to summon a shield as he savored the last of his beloved, now-discontinued frozen treat Cookie Cat.
What Rebecca Sugar initially introduced as a brightly colored animated series about a 13-year-old half-Gem, half-human boy raised by his three extraterrestrial guardians, soon became so much more. In its five-season run on Cartoon Network, “Steven Universe” navigated such themes as same-sex relationships, genocide, consent, grief and Ptsd — a groundbreaking feat for a series with a target demographic of six to 11-year-old boys.
“Everything was very difficult. At the time, that we were exploring Lgbtqia+ characters and storylines — it was really not something that was possible,” Sugar says. “I really do feel that we got to explore everything we’d hoped to, just maybe not in the exact order originally intended.”
She continues, “It’s just such a time capsule of what...

However, one of the elements that make The Owl House so intriguing isn’t just Luz’s adventures with witches and glyph magic with the mysterious Eda the Owl Lady, but the fallout from her decision to stay in the Demon Realm and its ramifications. This year’s virtual Comic-Con@Home has announced its schedule for Friday, July 24. The highlights are below.
The virtual event replaces the annual San Diego Comic-Con, the largest fan convention in North America, which was to be held July 22–26 at the San Diego Convention Center, until the Covid-19 pandemic forced its cancellation.
In June, Comic-Con International — the non-profit organization that oversees Sdcc and its sister event, WonderCon in Anaheim, Calif. — announced it was moving forward with the virtual event on the same dates. This time, however, the event is free and open to all.
Friday’s events include panels for all three of AMC’s “Walking Dead” series, Hulu’s new Marvel series “Helstrom,” and creatives like Charlize Theron, Joss Whedon, and Robert Kirkman.
The Comic-Con@Home schedule — including Wednesday, July 22 and Thursday, July 23 — is being announced daily through Sunday.
All times are Pacific Daylight.
10–11 a.m.

The last epic battle of “Steven Universe” isn’t one between friends and foes, but between Steven Universe and himself. After six years and nearly 200 episodes, both the show and character took the time to ask themselves some crucial, existential questions: What happens to a hero after they’ve already saved the day? Who is Steven Universe, and what makes him so special?
Steven’s ensuing spiral into self-doubt, and the gorgeously intuitive way the series guides him out of it, is heady stuff for any show, let alone a kids’ cartoon awash in pastels and uplifting musical breaks. But it’s also a typically ambitious arc for “Steven Universe,” and therefore a fitting one for it to end on — even if watching it wind down with such expert care makes its departure all the more bittersweet.

The title character of Steven Universe is an adolescent boy who, over the course of the Cartoon Network series’ first five seasons, developed the ability to fly, to conjure an impenetrable pink shield out of thin air, to use his saliva to heal injuries short of death (and sometimes beyond), to merge his body with a friend’s (in an act called fusion) so they can become even stronger as one than they are side-by-side, and more. But his greatest power — and the reason the show became so adored that a follow-up film,...

For six years now, Cartoon Network’s “Steven Universe” has been pumping out story after graceful story about the power of love, friendship, cooperation, self-acceptance and trust. Creator Rebecca Sugar, who previously worked on the network’s equally surreal “Adventure Time,” has created and honed an animated galaxy unlike any other, overflowing with distinct characters and complex mythology that sets it apart. So while the show might have started as the simple adventures of a boy and his alien guardians (aka “The Crystal Gems”) navigating what it means to live on Earth, “Steven Universe” has since served up some of TV’s most thoughtful meditations on what it means to be a good and compassionate person — or alien, or half-human/half-alien, or whatever it is that makes your individual atoms so special.

Show creator Rebecca Sugar and the cast of Steven Universe teased what fans can expect from the movie/musical!
Fans have known Steven Universe was getting a movie for a year but everyone behind the scenes remained tight lipped until San Diego Comic-Con 2019. During the Steven Universe panel we finally got a look at the trailer for the film and it brought the house down. While it was very much a first trailer (not too much about the plot was given away) it was enough to send the minds of fans reeling.
When we caught up with the cast and show creator Rebecca Sugar after the panel they still didn’t give too much away. However, Deedee Magno Hall (Pearl) gave us the best tease of all about Steven Universe: The Movie.
“It’s gonna be turnt.”
For the cast it’s been a relief to finally...
