Charlie Hunnam’s Monster-Fighting Epic That Redefined Sci-Fi Is Back on Streaming
Image
This July, Netflix is starting the fireworks early. Pacific Rim, Guillermo del Toro's 2013 monsters vs. robots blockbuster, is coming to the streaming service. Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, and Rinko Kikuchi star in the science fiction extravaganza, which grossed over $400 million Usd from the global box office. Pacific Rim will be available to stream on Netflix starting on July 1. It joins Pacific Rim: The Black, a Netflix-original animated series that is also available to watch on the streamer.

Pacific Rim came about in the wake of another project collapsing: del Toro's long-dreamed-of adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness. The film was penned by del Toro and Travis Beacham, and was conceptualized as a loving homage to mecha anime and kaiju movies. The film, which bore a $190 million budget, was filmed in Toronto, Ontario, Canada; it was del Toro's first film produced there, and it has subsequently become his home base.

Pacific Rim Writer’s Original Plan Was a Prequel About “The first Jaegar’s first fight with the Kaiju”
Image
A lot of people were disappointed with the horrible sequel to Pacific Rim. While Uprising failed, there were a slew of ideas from the original creative team that could have made for a prequel that could have been a box office juggernaut in recent years.

If only we had Guillermo del Toro and his team had gotten their way, we could have had another mecha monster hit to enjoy in theaters. However, the original writer of the film, Travis Beacham, had a fantastic idea for a prequel, despite not being very keen on them as a concept.

If this film were developed by the production company, it would have delved deep into the history of the post-apocalyptic world created by Guillermo del Toro. The prequel film would have looked into how the tradition of giant monsters being punched by giant robots became humanity’s favorite pastime.

The Pacific Rim franchise is gearing up to be back on screens, but it will be a TV saga this time. Well, that does not change the fact that the interdimensional world will be any less action-packed. Amazon MGM Studios is leading the ship with Legendary Entertainment at its helm, making it a potential project that could shine in the big leagues.

The upcoming TV series is set to be a prequel to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 sci-fi movie Pacific Rim. The acclaimed writer Eric Heisserer, who will write and executive produce the show, promises to deliver an engaging origin story. With the backing of Legendary Entertainment, the studio that produced the original movies, this series aims to broaden the Pacific Rim franchise in exciting and innovative ways.

Image
The “Pacific Rim” TV series has found a home at Amazon, Variety has learned exclusively.

The live-action project, which Variety exclusively reported on in 2024, is now in development at Prime Video in a deal between lead studio Legendary Television and Amazon MGM Studios.

As previously reported, Eric Heisserer will serve as writer and executive producer under his Chronology banner. The show is the first project under Chronology’s first-look TV deal with Legendary. Exact plot details are being kept under wraps, but the show will serve as a prequel to the films. According to sources, there is still the potential for new films in the franchise as well.

The first film in the franchise was directed by Guillermo del Toro from a screenplay by del Toro and Travis Beacham. It came out in 2013 and grossed over $400 million at the global box office. The sequel, “Pacific Rim Uprising,” bowed in 2018, while...

Impact Winter: Francis Lawrence developing Netflix series based on horror podcast
Image
Audible’s horror podcast Impact Winter has already inspired comic books that were published by Skybound, and now Deadline reports that it’s set to get a Netflix series adaptation as well, with director Francis Lawrence, whose credits include Constantine, I Am Legend, multiple Hunger Games movies, and the upcoming Stephen King adaptation The Long Walk, overseeing the development. More than a decade after a comet strike has inflicted an “impact winter” and blacked out the sun, vampires have emerged in the darkness to take over what remains of the world. 'Impact Winter' Series Set at Netflix With 'I Am Legend' Director Francis Lawrence
Image
One of the best ways to make a TV show in this day and age is to have some existing IP to build it on. From podcasts to graphic novels to board games – if it has a built-in audience, it's more enticing to studios. Such is the case with the Audible Originals podcast Impact Winter, now being developed into a series for Netflix with Francis Lawrence, who directed I Am Legend and four of the Hunger Games films. The podcast series was written by Travis Beacham, who co-wrote Pacific Rim and Clash of the Titans.

Deadline reports that Lawrence is attached to a series adaptation of Impact Winter, the hit Audible podcast that also spawned a comic-book series. The title of the podcast and subsequent series is taken from the scientific hypothesis that a large meteor hitting Earth would send particulate matter into the atmosphere, which would block out the...

Impact Winter | Francis Lawrence and Netflix working on a new horror series based on a podcast
Francis Lawrence in I Am Legend (2007)
Netflix has acquired the rights to Impact Winter, a horror podcast series, and is working with Francis Lawrence to bring it to the small screen.

The post-apocalyptic TV show market is pretty busy, but there must be room for one more, right? Let’s hope so because Netflix has acquired the rights to Impact Winter, a podcast series created by Travis Beacham, and is looking to develop it into a series of their own as reported by Deadline.

In the series, a comet has hit Earth, causing eternal night and pitting humans against vampires. Deadline mentions that the original podcast has been described as a mix of 30 Days Of Night and The Last Of Us. We must admit, that’s a pretty intriguing combination and clearly one that works. Impact Winter is now on its 3rd season, with a fourth one on the way. Over 6 million people follow and listen to the podcast,...

The Best Pacific Rim Sequel Came Out In 2021 And Was Much Better Than Uprising
Image
The best Pacific Rim sequel, Pacific Rim: The Black, is a character-driven anime-inspired series set in a post-apocalyptic Australia. Based on context clues, the show takes place after Pacific Rim: Uprising and expands the franchise's lore with new characters and a fresh setting. Although there has been talk of expanding the Pacific Rim cinematic universe, Pacific Rim 3 is not currently in development.

Although it didn't get the attention it deserved, the best Pacific Rim sequel came out in 2021 and it's much better than Pacific Rim: Uprising, the 2018 sequel to Guillermo del Toro's hit Kaiju-monster film. Penned by del Toro and Travis Beacham, the original Pacific Rim movie, which hit theaters in 2013, garnered a whopping $411 million at the global box office and received solid reviews from critics and audiences alike, despite its style-over-substance approach. In Pacific Rim, humans are at war with Kaiju enormous monsters that have crawled out of an inter-dimensional portal.

Pacific Rim Ending Explained
Image
The Kaiju attacks are part of an invasion plan orchestrated by extradimensional beings who aim to consume different worlds for colonization. Jaegers require two pilots because the neural load is too much for a single pilot to handle. Raleigh and Gipsy Danger had to destroy the breach instead of Stacker because the original plan went wrong and the breach would only allow Kaiju to pass through.

In the end of Pacific Rim, Raleigh Becket, Mako Mori, and Gipsy Danger cancel the apocalypse by sealing the breach so no more Kaiju can come through, but what did the Kaiju want and how did they figure out how to stop them? Pacific Rim: Guillermo del Toro confirms Tom Cruise was the first choice for the Idris Elba role
Image
In director Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 “monsters vs. mecha” film Pacific Rim (watch it Here), Idris Elba played the character of Marshal Stacker Pentecost, whose most popular scene may be when he gives a crowd-pumping speech that includes the line, “Today we are cancelling the apocalypse!” It’s a great moment that was almost played by another actor, as del Toro has revealed that Tom Cruise was the first choice to play Marshal Stacker Pentecost!

Speaking with Collider, del Toro said, “The two models for Pacific Rim, the two models for the screenplay, are Hoosiers with Gene Hackman and Top Gun. So, the part that Idris Elba plays, Tom Cruise was gonna do it, and I even had a karaoke. The deal couldn’t be made. He wanted to do it. We were developing stuff, and he couldn’t do it. Why Pacific Rim 3 Is No Longer Happening
Image
Despite the success of the first Pacific Rim film, the sequel underperformed at the box office and received negative reviews, leading to the cancelation of Pacific Rim 3. Guillermo del Toro, the director of the first film, stepped down from directing the sequel in order to work on his critically acclaimed film, The Shape of Water. While Pacific Rim 3 may not be happening, fans can still enjoy the franchise through the Netflix TV series, Pacific Rim: The Black, which has received positive reviews and spawned a graphic novel prequel.

A decade ago, renowned director and filmmaker Guillermo del Toro took the helm of Pacific Rim, a sci-fi monster movie he co-wrote alongside Travis Beacham. This production set in the future presents a world waging war against the Kaiju, colossal monsters that emerged from a portal deep in the Pacific Ocean aiming to wipe out mankind. Party Report: The Best Comic-Con Parties of 2023 (Photos)

Comic-Con and the Party Report return to a SAG-AFTRA and WGA strike affected San Diego where celebrities avoided the party scene because of guild rules. As a result, EW canceled their annual (and usually star-studded) bash; an indication of a very different year at Sdcc — and on the comic-con parties scene. But the con raged on just the same, so here are TheWrap’s photos from some of Sdcc 2023’s best parties.

The annual Fandom, presented by Paramount+ and Electronic Arts, Z2 and Pinfinity, was easily and clearly con’s best and classiest bash on Thursday night.

The ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA labor strikes, claimed their first major fan expo victim in San Diego Comic-Con 2023. Last year, the annual geek fest was back in full swing post-covid with the party scene returning with numerous bashes around Comic-Con.

But this year, with Hollywood talent practically forbidden from even attending the event, many brands have pulled out along with big-name party cancellations. Brands who sponsor Comic-Con bashes want Hollywood film and tv stars on their step and repeats. No stars? No brands? No parties.

Comic-Con’s biggest bash via Entertainment Weekly cancelled due to the strikes. IMDb, decided not to go forward with their annual yacht party, but will have a presence this year regardless. The yacht will serve as a floating fan experience and will be docked at Fifth Avenue Landing, directly behind the San Diego Convention Center.

Comic-Con 2023 is going to look like the cons of yore before Hollywood arrived.

Carnival Row (2019)
Interview: Carnival Row showrunner Erik Oleson on the fantasy series finale
Carnival Row (2019)
Warning: The following contains spoilers for the series finale of Carnival Row.

The first season of Carnival Row debuted back before the pandemic and quickly earned a second season. But, when production was halted due to Covid-19, Amazon decided to end the series early to allow the cast and crew to join other projects. Because of this, Travis Beacham’s mythology which was capable of lasting as an ongoing series, had to be wrapped up in a single season. Now that all ten episodes of Carnival Row‘s second season have aired, fans have seen how this epic story has ended.

With huge transformations for all of the characters involved, it goes without saying that the ending of Carnival Row may not be what many fans were expecting. To discuss the end of the show, I had the chance to chat with showrunner Erik Oleson about how the saga of...

The Hong Kong Battle In Pacific Rim Is The Best Action Scene Ever
Image
(Welcome to Best Action Scene Ever, a column dedicated to breaking down the best, most effective action sequences throughout the genre. In this edition, Guillermo del Toro stages an epic Jaeger-on-Kaiju brawl in the under-appreciated "Pacific Rim.")

Certain established filmmakers have managed to carve out their own niche in the industry, playing in a very specific sandbox that best showcases their talent and interests. Christopher Nolan is typically going to err on the side of big-budget, crowd-pleasing entertainment with a cerebral twist. Wes Anderson is never going to let the "quirky" allegations of his critics stop him from delivering immaculately-composed movies unfolding with an almost childlike sense of wonder. And then there's Guillermo del Toro, the monster-loving Mexican filmmaker who is never afraid to branch out from one genre (or even an entire medium) to the next if that's what best suits the story.

In 2013, the director unleashed perhaps his...

Erik Oleson Interview: Carnival Row Season 2
Image
With Carnival Row season 2 also being its final season, Erik Oleson was tasked with bringing Prime Video's steampunk fantasy series to its epic conclusion.

Oleson, who was showrunner of Daredevil season 3, replaced Carnival Row creator Travis Beacham and René Echevarria as showrunner. Oleson worked with executive producers and stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne through the challenges of producing Carnival Row season 2 during the Covid-19 pandemic shutdowns.

Screen Rant had the pleasure of interviewing Oleson about wrapping up Carnival Row's story, killing major characters, and whether he would return if Carnival Row gets a revival.

Showrunner Erik Oleson on Ending Carnival Row

Carnival Row Season 2 TV Review
Image
Plot: With humans and fae folk divided and freedom on the line, each hero will face impossible dilemmas and soul-defining tests in the epic conclusion of Carnival Row.

Review: When Carnival Row premiered almost four years ago, I gave it a solid review based on the episodes I had seen. With quality production values and vivid mythology, I found the steampunk-inspired story to be intriguing. Most critics were not so kind, and, despite a quick second season renewal, the delays brought about by the pandemic also meant the sophomore season would be it’s last. While the final season of Carnival Row is two episodes longer than the first, the gap in between has allowed this season to broaden its scope and deliver a fairly epic conclusion to the story of the fictional country known as The Burgue and the war between humans and the supernatural beings that reside in the titular slum.

Carnival Row Season 2 Review: A Faltering Story That Doesn't Live Up To The Rich, Fantastical World
Image
It's been a long wait since the first season of Amazon's "Carnival Row." The show premiered in August 2019, and since then, Amazon has released two epic fantasy series connected to well-loved, already-existing source material: "The Wheel of Time" and, of course, the juggernaut of them all, "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power."

Even without these projects diverting Amazon's attention, one can't help but feel that the studio let "Carnival Row" — which boasts an impressive cast led by Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne — fall by the wayside. And one can't also help but think that when the show's creator, Travis Beacham, left the series just months after season 1, there might have been some strife within the production that ultimately wouldn't bode well for the series.

Season 2, which is also the final season of the series, reflects these setbacks, although Beacham's intricately created world full of fae and humans remains more or less intact.

'Carnival Row' Season 2: Andrew Gower on Ezra's Turning Point
Image
Three years after the Season 1 finale of Carnival Row, the steampunk fantasy is finally coming to a close with Season 2. Based on Travis Beacham's 2005 Blacklist screenplay A Killing on Carnival Row, the series is set within a Victorian-like fantasy world filled with fantastical creatures filled with prejudice, murder, and betrayal. The story mostly focuses on the faerie Vignette Stonemoss (Cara Delevingne) and Rycroft Philostrate (Orlando Bloom) who are caught up in the political intrigue in the Row, but it also features a harrowing look into the star-crossed romance between Imogen Spurnrose (Tamzin Merchant) and Agreus (David Gyasi), who are on the run from her cruel and controlling brother Ezra Spurnrose (Andrew Gower) in Season 2.

Carnival Row season 2: trailer unveiled for Amazon show’s second and final season
Image
A couple months ago, it was announced that the second season of Carnival Row will be reaching the Amazon Prime streaming service on February 17th – three and a half years after the August 2019 premiere of the first season. Now a trailer for Carnival Row season 2 can be seen in the embed above.

The second season of Carnival Row will also be the show’s last. Which makes sense, given the long gap between seasons, but is also a bit disappointing given how much troubled the project was from the beginning. This concept started out with spec script called A Killing on Carnival Row, which Travis Beacham wrote in 2005. At one time, Guillermo del Toro was going to direct the Carnival Row feature film. Beacham then developed the idea into a series with Rene Echevarria… and there have been some behind-the-scenes shake-ups along the way. Echevarria was the first showrunner, but...

Image
Prime Video has set a 2023 premiere date for the second – and final – 10-episode season of Carnival Row. The premiere date announcement was accompanied by a super short teaser trailer that gives nothing away.

Honestly, it’s been so long since season one aired that I assumed we’d never get a season two. I was wrong. The first eight-episode season premiered on August 30, 2019, and season two will debut on February 17, 2023.

Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne reprise their roles as Rycroft Philostrate (a.k.a. Philo) and Vignette Stonemoss, respectively. The season two cast also includes Arty Froushan as Jonah Breakspear, Caroline Ford as Sophie Longerbane, Karla Crome as Tourmaline, and Andrew Gower as Ezra. Tamzin Merchant plays Imogen Spurnrose and David Gyasi stars as Agreus Astrayon.

Erik Oleson serves as showrunner and executive produces along with Orlando Bloom, Cara Delevingne, Brad Van Arragon, Sarah Byrd, Jim Dunn, Sam Ernst, Wesley Strick,...

‘Carnival Row’ to End with Season 2 at Amazon
Image
“Carnival Row,” the Prime Video series starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne, will conclude after two seasons on the streamer. The second season of the fantasy show premieres on February 17, Amazon announced Monday.

The series first premiered in August 2019 and focuses on the titular city of Carnival Row, where mythological beings exist as oppressed refugees in a human-dominated social order. Bloom stars as Rycroft Philostrate, a detective in the city and a half-fae, who begins investigating a conspiracy involving a group of fae known as the Black Raven — one of whom is his former lover Vignette Stonemoss (Delevingne). Season 2 picks up where the first left off, with Rycroft off the force but still investigating a series of murders, while the Black Raven escalates their plans to protest oppression in the city.

Season 2 of “Carnival Row” began production shortly after the Season 1 premiere in 2019. However, the show ended up as one...

Carnival Row returns in February for its second and final season
Image
The first season of Carnival Row was released through the Amazon Prime streaming service way back in August of 2019, so it would make sense if you thought the show was already cancelled years ago. But a second season of the show was ordered before the first season had even premiered, and it’s finally going to be released on February 17th. Not surprisingly, given the long delay between seasons, Amazon has confirmed that Carnival Row season 2 is going to be the end of the show.

Starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne, Carnival Row is set

in a Victorian fantasy world of mythological immigrant creatures whose exotic homelands were invaded by the empires of man. Bloom plays human detective, Rycroft Philostrate, while Delevingne stars as a refugee faerie named Vignette Stonemoss. In Season 1, they rekindle a dangerous affair despite an increasingly intolerant society and Vignette harbors a secret that endangers Philo...
