- João Donato was born on August 17, 1934 in Rio Branco, Acre, Brazil. He was a composer and actor, known for Bridesmaids (2011), The Boys in the Band (1970) and Rio's Love Song (1994). He was married to Ivone Belem and Patricia del Sasser. He died on July 17, 2023 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

- Because of the area he grew up in Brasil he was able to hear Cuban music on the radio. This influence would manifest itself in many of his compositions, piano, and trombone playing.
- Donato was a Brazilian jazz and bossa nova pianist as well as a trombonist from Rio Branco.
- A little known fact is that João played trombone and recorded on the instrument with the bands of legendary Latin bandleaders: pianist Eddie Palmieri (La Perfecta c. 1962) and master timbalero Tito Puente and his big band (Bossa Nova by Tito Puente c. 1962, Vaya Puente c. 1962).
- His first solo album came out in 1953.
