Heading into the seventh season of “All American,” series showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll was nervous. The pressure was on to make a dynamic and addicting series about a group of young people trying to achieve the impossible, only this time around, The CW original had to do it without their leading character, Daniel Ezra’s Spencer James.
“The challenge was, are we going to find characters that we care about?” Carroll told TheWrap. She was still anxious about whether or not this new installment would work right up until the point that Nathaniel McIntyre walked into his audition. “I’m just like, ‘Wait a minute. Oh, done. He’s a star,'” Carroll said of the actor she cast as Kingston “Kj” Jeremy, a promising young football player who moves to Beverly Hills as his parents are on the brink of divorce.

Exclusive: This is a rare occurrence in the current strike-impacted broadcast season — a scripted series getting an order for additional episodes. According to sources, the CW’s flagship drama All American is having its current sixth season extended from 13 episode to 15 episodes.
All American’s first five seasons have ranged between 16-20 episodes. With the series picking up just over a year after the end of Season 5, there is a lot of unpack, and the extra episodes would allow to better flesh out the story and build toward a satisfying conclusion.
It also would allow fans to stay in the current world longer as All American‘s characters are preparing for major life changes, with series protagonist Spencer James (Daniel Ezra) and potentially Jordan Baker (Michael Evans Behling) headed to the NFL draft.

It’s official. There will be no JJ Parker in Season 6 of CW’s All American. Hunter Clowdus, who has been with the series since its launch, has exited ahead of the upcoming season.
Clowdus joined as a recurring actor in Season 1 and was upped to series regular in Season 4. JJ Parker was an outside linebacker turned quarterback for the Beverly Hills Eagles, who shined as a star both on and off the field.
Deadline hears that JJ’s storyline had “organically wrapped” at the end of Season 5, explaining Clowdus’ departure from the series.
Last month, the cast teased some of what to expect from the show’s upcoming sixth season. Read more here.

Major spoilers for All American season 5 aheadThe showrunner of All American details what went into that big character exit. All American season 5 received some positive news earlier this year when it was announced that The CW had renewed it for season 6. Given the network's changes in the wake of a sale, and its shift away from young adult dramas, the early pick-up served as a sign of confidence in the sports saga that receives consistently strong viewership. But after the shocking events of season 5 episode 11, titled "Time," the series will be missing one original cast member.
In the episode, Head coach Billy Baker (played by Taye Diggs) dies while saving another All American character. On the way back from the Crenshaw combine, the team's bus gets into a dangerous accident. Billy initially gets off the bus with the rest of the team, but when he realizes that Jabari (Simeon Daise...

The future of The CW is beginning to take shape.
The broadcast network has renewed its drama All American for a sixth season in 2023-24. The pickup is the first since local TV giant Nexstar acquired a 75 percent stake in The CW and hired former Pop TV head Brad Schwartz as entertainment president.
All American has consistently turned in some of the better ratings for the network: This season, it’s the top show on The CW among adults 18-49 in Nielsen’s seven-day ratings and ranks fourth in total viewers. The network also says it had the largest cross-platform audience on The CW in the 2021-22 season.

The CW may be scaling back its scripted ambitions but it’s keeping All American.
The network has handed an early sixth season renewal to the drama series, marking the first scripted renewal after Nexstar took ownership earlier this year.
All American, which was The CW’s number one linear series in adult 18-49, most-watched series on digital and the largest show in total audience across all platforms, will launch its fifth season on January 23.
It will then return for season six in the 2023-24 broadcast season.
Deadline understands the series, which comes from Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Studios, will continue to be produced in line with its previous seasons. This comes despite talk that the network is looking to cut budgets for scripted orders and floating a target license fee for drama series of 1 million dollar per episode going forward.

The CW is plotting a spinoff of its football-themed high school drama series All American, Deadline has confirmed. We hear the project is still in the dealmaking stages.
If all elements come together, we hear the idea is for the spinoff to center on the character of Simone Hicks, played by Geffri Maya. As first reported by TV Line, the potential spinoff would be introduced in an episode of All American‘s upcoming third season. It would revolve around Simone as she attends a historically Black college. Simone, a Beverly High senior, is the girlfriend of Jordan Baker (Michael Evans Behling).
Reps for The CW and Warner Bros declined comment The two companies also are working a potential spinoff of Black Lightning, which will originate as a backdoor pilot on the mothership series.
Season 2 of All American found Spencer James (Daniel Ezra), now a football state champion, with a tough decision to make.

Hours after the Monday fast national ratings revealed a strong return for All American, the CW has ordered 3 additional episodes, bringing the drama’s second season to 16 episodes.

Versus its series debut last fall, All American was up by 35% in viewers, 95% in adults 18-34 (0.3) and 66% in adults 18-49. And that was with All American opening the night versus having a lead-in, Riverdale, last fall. All American was also up dramatically from its March finale, by 72% in viewers, 198% in 18-...
