Heading into the seventh season of “All American,” series showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll was nervous. Exclusive: This is a rare occurrence in the current strike-impacted broadcast season — a scripted series getting an order for additional episodes. According to sources, the CW’s flagship drama All American is having its current sixth season extended from 13 episode to 15 episodes.

All American’s first five seasons have ranged between 16-20 episodes. With the series picking up just over a year after the end of Season 5, there is a lot of unpack, and the extra episodes would allow to better flesh out the story and build toward a satisfying conclusion.

It also would allow fans to stay in the current world longer as All American‘s characters are preparing for major life changes, with series protagonist Spencer James (Daniel Ezra) and potentially Jordan Baker (Michael Evans Behling) headed to the NFL draft.

It’s official. There will be no JJ Parker in Season 6 of CW’s All American. Hunter Clowdus, who has been with the series since its launch, has exited ahead of the upcoming season.

Clowdus joined as a recurring actor in Season 1 and was upped to series regular in Season 4. JJ Parker was an outside linebacker turned quarterback for the Beverly Hills Eagles, who shined as a star both on and off the field.

Deadline hears that JJ’s storyline had “organically wrapped” at the end of Season 5, explaining Clowdus’ departure from the series.

According to sources, the drama had production set up in two Downtown Los Angeles locations for today. The unrelated shooting occurred in the vicinity of one of the locations, we hear. All American has been renewed for season six and won’t be affected by the shakeup that’s soon to hit The CW following its takeover by Nexstar. Brad Schwartz, President, Entertainment, The CW Network, announced the series will return as part of the network’s revamped 2023-2024 primetime lineup.

“Over the last five seasons, All American has established itself as one of the all-time CW flagship franchises,” Brad Schwartz, President of Entertainment at The CW, said in a statement. “All American is not only the network’s youngest series, but also the strongest performer when combining all our platforms.”

“All American,” which held the No. 1 spot for the most-watched linear series for adults ages 18–49 on the network, is inspired by the real-life story of professional American football player Spencer Paysinger, who is played by Daniel Ezra on the show. “All American” is also the largest show in total audience across all platforms, the network said in a press release.

The series comes from the house of Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Studios.

The network has handed an early sixth season renewal to the drama series, marking the first scripted renewal after Nexstar took ownership earlier this year.

All American, which was The CW’s number one linear series in adult 18-49, most-watched series on digital and the largest show in total audience across all platforms, will launch its fifth season on January 23.

It will then return for season six in the 2023-24 broadcast season.

Deadline understands the series, which comes from Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television and CBS Studios, will continue to be produced in line with its previous seasons. The CW is plotting a spinoff of its football-themed high school drama series All American, Deadline has confirmed. We hear the project is still in the dealmaking stages.

If all elements come together, we hear the idea is for the spinoff to center on the character of Simone Hicks, played by Geffri Maya. As first reported by TV Line, the potential spinoff would be introduced in an episode of All American‘s upcoming third season. It would revolve around Simone as she attends a historically Black college. Simone, a Beverly High senior, is the girlfriend of Jordan Baker (Michael Evans Behling).

Reps for The CW and Warner Bros declined comment The two companies also are working a potential spinoff of Black Lightning, which will originate as a backdoor pilot on the mothership series.

The decision comes after Monday night’s season premiere set a series high for viewership. It brings the number of episodes in Season 2 up to 16, which matches the first season’s episode count.

Best-selling author Nicholas Sparks is venturing into television with a mix of adaptations of his tear-jerker novels and original material his company will produce.

The company, Nicholas Sparks Productions, has put three projects into development at TNT, ABC Family and Lifetime, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Seven of Sparks' romantic novels have been turned into feature films. An eighth, "Safe Haven," starring Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough, is due in theaters early next year.

The TNT show, "A Bend in the Road," is based on his novel about a recently widowed sheriff in a tourist town in Georgia and his relationship with his son's teacher. Brandon Camp ("John Doe," the Sparks-ian "Love Happens") will write the pilot and executive produce with Sparks and his partner, Theresa Park.

At Lifetime, Sparks will exec produce a drama called "Deliverance Creek," about a woman trying to hold her family together in the aftermath of the Civil War.
