Since 2016’s Fences, Denzel Washington has served as the cinematic midwife for August Wilson’s Century Cycle, a sequence of 10 plays depicting African American life in Pittsburgh during each decade of the 1900s. Following that first foray, which Washington starred in and directed, came George C. Wolfe’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and now, with Malcolm Washington at the helm, The Piano Lesson. One of Wilson’s most acclaimed and popular works, the play is set in the late 1930s and introduces a strain of magic realism that will run deep throughout the rest of Wilson’s plays in the cycle.
The Piano Lesson’s central conflict converges on the Charles family’s ancestral inheritance: a piano once traded for two of their enslaved forbears, and later absconded with by a descendant. Review: Hulu has been making a concentrated effort to give the Horror genre it’s due with plenty of low-budget films with interesting concepts releasing every October as part of their Huluween initiative. While not all have landed, I appreciate the fact that they’re trying something different. Shudder can’t do everything for the horror world. And I was intrigued by the idea of a kid’s television host coming out of the television to murder parents and kidnap children. It’s a terrifying idea with so many possibilities to get under your skin. It comes from an episode of Bite Size Halloween which has now been expanded into a full-length feature film. 1980s nostalgia is out and 1990s nostalgia is in, with the horror genre doling out films like I Saw the TV Glow (review) and now Mr. Crocket, an adaptation of Brandon Espy’s 2022 short of the same name (itself a part of Hulu’s Bite Size Halloween series). The trailer for Netflix’s adaptation of August Wilson’s “The Piano Lesson,” starring Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington, has been unveiled. Both Jackson and Washington are reprising their roles from the Broadway revival of the show, which wrapped up its run in Jan. 2023.
The film, directed by Malcolm Washington, follows the lives of the Charles family, led by Doaker Charles, (Jackson) in 1936 during the aftermath of the Great Depression. The family heirloom piano is decorated with designs carved by an enslaved ancestor. One brother plans to build a family fortune by selling the instrument and buying the land his family toiled, while his sister tries to keep it to preserve the family history.
John David Washington plays Doaker’s nephew Boy Willie, a role Jackson himself had originated in the 1987 stage production. The trailer sees Boy Willie telling his niece that the piano represents her family.

John David Washington and his sister, played by Danielle Deadwyler, battle over a prized heirloom piano that tears their family apart in the trailer (below) for Netflix’s The Piano Lesson, which was released on Wednesday.
“You feel that? That’s your family. That’s your blood,” David Washington, in the role of Boy Willie, tells a young woman (Skylar Smith) in the Charles household at one point in the trailer, as her hand runs over a piano decorated with the faces of family members carved by an enslaved ancestor.
The 130-year-old piano pits Boy Willie against his sister Berniece, played by Deadwyler, as he plans to sell the heirloom to build a family fortune, while his sister wants to hold onto the sole vestige of their family legacy.
In the middle, their uncle, played by Samuel L. Jackson, tries to mediate in a family battling to achieve a future...

[This story includes major spoilers for Hunters season two.]
Adolf Hitler is brought to justice in the season two finale of Hunters.
The final season of the Amazon drama tracks the group of Nazi hunters coming back together from separate paths in Europe in order to go after Hitler, who has been hiding at a compound in Argentina for the last 30 years and preparing for the Fourth Reich.
When the season kicks off, the hunters are scattered to the wind, having had a falling out following the events of the first season that is later revealed to be a result of Jonah (Logan Lerman) taking things too far and killing a child on their last mission. In the first episode, Jonah is seen staking out a brothel in Paris — though he has a fiancée at home — waiting for someone, who ends up being Nazi Biff Simpson (Dylan Baker) from season one. Hunters is a series created by David Weil starring Al Pacino, Logan Lerman and Saul Rubinek among others.
By Jordan Peele as executive producer, Hunters is in its second season with Al Pacino as maximum attraction of this series about nazi hunters which is appealing because of its aesthetics that are comic strip or “Seventies” look which will not go by unnoticed.
It is not by chance that this is a series with an unmistakeable Peele look, maximum exponent of the “new horror film”. Doubtlessly, this makes it special as well as the very unique way in which absurd is combined with a a series plot that at the same time is a very deep denouncement in social issues.
A very different, entertaining, funny, aesthetic and theatrical series that has a truly spectacular end of season in store for us. Not to be missed.

Plot: After an accident derails their exploits in Europe, The Hunters must band back together to hunt down history’s most infamous Nazi—Adolf Hitler—who’s hiding in South America. Meanwhile, a look to the past reveals Meyer Offerman (Al Pacino) encountering a dangerous threat that could unravel his secret and expose his true identity, with explosive reverberations for our Hunters.
Review: It is rare to see a television series go out on its own terms after such a short time on the air. Despite premiering three years ago, the second season of Hunters was delayed due to Covid-19. After so many years away, the dramatic series about Nazi hunters in the 1970s returns with a vastly different sophomore season which also serves as its last. I enjoyed the first season of this pulpy exploitation thriller, but I loved the second despite it feeling like a wholly different series.
