Sundance didn’t have the plethora of late night bidding wars we used to see in the good old days of the festival, but a number of buzziest titles are actually closing deals late into the spring and into the early summer. Over 60 films came into this year’s Sundance looking for homes, and slowly but surely a number of those are finding homes. As we previously reported, the hope was that even more distributors could get creative.

Below we’ll update all the acquisitions following the festival as they arrive.

There is a certain ballad that carries over when dealing with a shared trauma: It’s a resonance that only those who are attuned to woe can understand. In the highly-anticipated film “Charliebird,” that song is amplified to a volume that no doubt will be heard by audiences everywhere.

“Charliebird” stars Samantha Smart (who also wrote the script) as a music therapist at a children’s hospital. During her shift, she is assigned to work with one patient whose story triggers her own past. The film will have its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in the narrative competition section. This Libby Ewing’s directorial feature debut.

The official synopsis reads: “Working as a music therapist at a children’s hospital in Texas, Alyse aka Al (Smart) is deeply devoted to her patients and has a rebellious spirit. She’s masking her struggle to face a violent, past trauma.

Exclusive: Magnolia Pictures has acquired worldwide rights to the Tom Blyth and Russell Tovey thriller Plainclothes from filmmaker Carmen Emmi.

Emmi’s directorial debut is set in 1990s Syracuse and follows a promising undercover officer (Blyth) who is assigned to lure and arrest gay men. He defies orders when he falls in love with a target (Tovey). The movie won the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Ensemble Cast when it world premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, and also stars Maria Dizzia, Christian Cooke, Gabe Fazio, and Amy Forsyth. A fall theatrical release is planned. Magnify will represent international sales in Cannes.

Bradley Cooper‘s next directorial feature Is This Thing On? has completed principal photography!

The upcoming movie, which the 50-year-old actor is directing and has a supporting role in, has been in the works for two years, with production postponed due to the strikes in 2023.

In addition to Bradley, we already knew that Will Arnett, who co-wrote the script, Laura Dern, Andra Day and Sean Hayes are also starring, and several more actors have recently been announced as part of the cast!

With gay rights coming back into the crosshairs in almost every country across the globe, Carmen Emmi’s slow-burn drama is sobering reminder of just how far these things have progressed in the past 30 years. Taking place primarily in 1997 — unfolding in flashback from the framing device of a family New Year’s Eve party being held a few years later — it takes a little while to find its feet. Once the main players are established, though, and experimental flashes of harsh analog video become a more recognizable manifestation of its ugly-beautiful aesthetic, Plainclothes builds to a very satisfying conclusion, putting a torrid but meaningful gay love affair at the center of a universal coming-of-age story.

Like “Cruising” for the 1990s New Queer Cinema set, Carmen Emmi’s feature debut “Plainclothes” features the most emotionally (and physically) naked performance yet from rising British star Tom Blyth. He plays Lucas, a rookie cop somewhere outside Syracuse assigned to post up in one of those bland, sad Malls of America, hoping to lure men into a toilet stall — and into exposing themselves or more.

This clandestine, bait-and-catch operation was the sort of problematic police procedure that got people like George Michael into trouble for lewd conduct. Here, it forms the basis of a thriller — and one with shades of romance when Lucas’ own secret attraction to men starts overtaking him. And especially in the form of Russell Tovey, sparking a hesitant hook-up and possible romance after Lucas catches Andrew (Tovey) in the bathroom, only to end up lingering too long.

The 2025 Sundance Film Festival‘s lineup will include 87 feature films and six episodic projects. Sundance received 15,775 submissions from 156 countries, including 4,138 feature-length film submissions. The 87 films selected represent 33 countries and territories, with 36 of the chosen films coming from first-time feature filmmakers.

“The Sundance Film Festival remains steadfast in its commitment to elevating unique and urgent voices in independent storytelling. Audiences can expect a 2025 program that showcases varied and vibrant filmmaking globally,” stated Robert Redford, Sundance Institute Founder and President.

Exclusive: Maria Dizzia (My Old Ass), John Bedford Lloyd (Ozark) and Gabe Fazio (Maestro) have been set for supporting roles in Plainclothes, a new indie drama from writer-director Carmen Emmi.

Currently shooting in New York, the film stars Tom Blyth and Russell Tovey, with Amy Forsyth and Christian Cooke in additional supporting roles. Set in the ’90s and inspired by true events, it watches as a working-class undercover officer is tasked with entrapping and apprehending gay men, only to find himself drawn to one of his targets.

Producers include Arthur Landon, Colby Cote, and Eric Podwall on behalf of Page 1 Entertainment and Lorton Entertainment. Alex Wenger and April Kelley are co-producing.

Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” has been announced as the spotlight gala film at the 61st New York Film Festival.

“Maestro is a bravura achievement for its director and star, a work of conviction and imagination that does justice to the brilliance and complexity of its subject,” said Dennis Lim, artistic director of New York Film Festival. “We are honored to have Bradley Cooper’s enthralling film as a gala presentation at this year’s festival, and doubly so to be showing it in a venue that is synonymous with Leonard Bernstein.”

“Maestro” is a biographical romance in which Cooper plays the famed conductor Leonard Bernstein. Netflix has revealed the first official trailer for “Maestro,” Bradley Cooper’s second directorial effort that sees the actor star as conductor Leonard Bernstein.

The biographical romance, which Cooper also co-wrote and produced, chronicles the life of the acclaimed conductor and composer with a focus on his tumultuous 25-year marriage to Felicia Montealegre.

Co-starring opposite Cooper is “She Said” actor Carey Mulligan as Montealegre. Maya Hawke plays their daughter, Jamie, and Sam Nivola plays their son, Alexander. Additional cast members include Matt Bomer, Sarah Silverman, Gideon Glick, Gabe Fazio, Eric Parkinson, William Hill, Nick Blaemire, Oscar Pavlo, Tim Rogan and Mallory Portnoy.

Producers include Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Fred Berner, Amy Durning and Kristie Macosko Krieger, and executive producers are Carla Raij, Josh Singer, Bobby Wilhelm, Weston Middleton and Tracey Landon. Any show or film "based on a true story" is guaranteed to have a built-in creep factor. In the case of "The Good Nurse," the story rips pages from Charles Graeber's 2013 book " The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness, and Murder," which details how real-life serial killer Charles "Charlie" Cullen murdered dozens (possibly hundreds) of people. The film, co-starring Eddie Redmayne as Cullen and Jessica Chastain as the eponymous good nurse Amy Loughren, is the latest in a long string of serial killer adaptations to hit Netflix, for better or worse.

While the film itself falls a little flat, there is plenty to admire about both Chastain's and Redmayne's performances. Redmayne, in particular, makes a disturbing turn as the deadly nurse, who insidiously wields his power to kill people under the guise of simply doing his job.

Movies about American teenage life tend to be jumpy and exuberant, as if they were unfolding in a hive. In the usual high-school comedy, even the most out-of-the-loop dweebs are right there in the jammed hallways, getting tweaked by the mean girls (or mean boys) and hanging out with their fellow quick-witted losers. There are always scenes set in the cafeteria, or at keg parties, or in the back seats of vehicles strewn with friends and enemies. But what these movies tend to leave out — what movies, almost by nature, leave out — is the part of teenage life that’s about drifting around and dreaming and being alone, not just trying to join the crowd but getting the hell away from it.

Written and Directed by E.B. Hughes (Turnabout), Exit 0 is dark psychological thriller that follows a young couple who attempt to salvage their relationship with a trip to the seaside, away from the hustle, bustle and noise of the city. Things don’t go as planned, however (when do they?), as the man, Billy, discovers a VHS tape in the hotel room dresser drawer containing an apparent murder. Then the tape goes missing and people struggle to believe what Billy is telling them. Oh dear.

The film has an immediate tension that I thought was taken hold of and built up well as things progressed. It’s not merely a murder-mystery story, but delves into psycho-thriller with the questioning of Billy’s mindset.

As a director, Derek Cianfrance is usually given a major say in determining who will be cast in a project. But in the case of HBO’s adaptation of Wally Lamb’s “I Know This Much Is True,” Mark Ruffalo was already in place to star as Dominick Birdsey and his twin brother, Thomas, when Cianfrance signed on. In fact, Ruffalo, who had the option on the 1998 novel and was also set to serve as an executive producer, was the reason Cianfrance signed on.

“Mark was always one of my favorite actors. I had tried to get him in ‘Blue Valentine’ back in the mid-2000s and he instead chose to do ‘13 Going on 30,’” Cianfrance says. “We sat down to breakfast together and my answer was ‘yes’ before I even read the material.”

HBO’s six-part limited series “I Know This Much is True” is painful, raw and agonizing. What likely will keep you watching the series about deeply troubled identical twin adult brothers is the actor who brings them both to life — Mark Ruffalo. As paranoid schizophrenic Thomas, who chops off his hand to please God, he is a fount of anxiety, reserved and openly honest. As Dominick, Ruffalo is prone to angry, volatile outbursts as he tries to act as an advocate for his mentally ill brother.

Ruffalo fans may sense something familiar about his dual TV roles onscreen. They might experience flashbacks to his more mainstream double-duty role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as scientist Bruce Banner, whose wayward experiment causes him to transform into the massive angry green creature known as the Hulk whenever he is in mortal danger or his heart rate zooms.

The combination of cutting-edge motion capture technology, a bond between actors and Stella Adler’s training allowed Mark Ruffalo to pull off the impressive double-act of playing twin brothers in the HBO limited series “I Know This Much Is True.”

In the adaptation of the 1998 novel by Wally Lamb, which debuts Sunday, Ruffalo portrays brothers Dominick and Thomas Birdsey. Dominick is a blue collar, guy’s guy construction worker while Thomas is chubby and deeply sensitive man, who has been institutionalized due to mental illness.

With Ruffalo playing two characters, the six-episode series, written and directed by Derek Cianfrance, had to be shot out of sequence. When Ruffalo first approached Cianfrance about collaborating on “I Know This Much Is True,” the actor admitted that he wasn’t aware of many instances where one actor playing twins really worked well in an adult drama.

Mark Ruffalo takes on the part of twin brothers on HBO’s limited series adaptation of “I Know This Much Is True,” often appearing more than once in the same scene, but for Ruffalo it played out much like two separate jobs.

“We didn’t want it to be like, I run and put a wig on and then do the same scene I just did,” Ruffalo said, explaining that he and director Derek Cianfrance took a six-week break between shooting the two characters’ parts. Ruffalo used the hiatus to put on 30 pounds and get into the mindset of a character living with mental illness.

The first thing you notice about Grear Patterson’s “Giants Being Lonely” is how unbelievably sharp it looks. Hunter Zimny’s cinematography is bright, and it’s crisp, and if you weren’t sitting in a theater you could swear that someone left the motion smoothing on. “Giants Being Lonely” may have the free-floating structure of a Terrence Malick joint, but it hasn’t been filmed through the fog of memory. It’s immediate and specific and painful and impressive.

Set in an unspecified rural alcove of the American South, “Giants Being Lonely” examines the lives in the orbit of a high school baseball team. Their team, the Giants, is talented and successful, thanks mostly to a star pitcher named Bobby (Jack Irving) and, perhaps, to their emotionally abusive Coach, whose overlooked son Adam is on the team too. Lionsgate has released a trailer for a new cyber-thriller set in the “high stakes world of blockchain technology” called Crypto.

Beau Knapp stars in the film as a Wall Street banker named Martin ”who is thrust into a vast scheme involving money laundering, undercover FBI agents and the Russian mob, in this cyber-thriller. After a fallout with his bosses, Martin is sent to his hometown where it soon becomes evident his reassignment was anything but coincidental.”

Check out this wonderfully shot opening tracking scene from director Derek Cianfrance's upcoming drama The Place Beyond the Pines, which stars Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper. I love a good tracking shot, and this one features the main character in his trailer and then follows him through the carnival that he works at as he proceeds right into his crazy motorcycle stunt. I've also posted a little commentary video on the film as well. 

The Place Beyond the Pines revolves around "a professional motorcycle rider (Gosling) who turns to bank robberies to support his newborn son, but when he crosses paths with a rookie police officer (Cooper) their violent confrontation spirals into a tense generational feud." It's also been described as "a rich dramatic thriller, tracing the intersecting lives of fathers and sons, cops and robbers, heroes and villains."

I have been looking forward to seeing this film, The Place Beyond the Pines, for a while. The cast in it is amazing, and the trailer alone tugs at the emotional heartstrings. I haven’t really seen that big of a push for it, even though the movie comes out in limited release this Friday. We here at GeekTyrant will be at WonderCon this weekend, but I am sure I can squeeze some time between panels to see this film. With that being said, here is a really well made poster for the film. Here's another trailer for Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper's new drama thriller The Place Behind the Pines, which comes from director Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine). It looks like a solid movie. Cianfrance is an intense writer and director. I watched Blue Valentine again recently, and it depressed the hell out of me.

The Place Beyond the Pines revolves around "a professional motorcycle rider (Gosling) who turns to bank robberies to support his newborn son, but when he crosses paths with a rookie police officer (Cooper) their violent confrontation spirals into a tense generational feud." It's also been described as "a rich dramatic thriller, tracing the intersecting lives of fathers and sons, cops and robbers, heroes and villains."

It has a great supporting cast that includes Greta Gerwig, Eva Mendes, Ben Mendelsohn, Ray Liotta, Ali Mahershalalhasbaz, Gabe Fazio, Max Martini, and Emory Cohen.

U.S. rights to The Place Beyond the Pines, the highly anticipated new drama from director Derek Cianfrance, starring Academy Award nominee Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, and Eva Mendes, have been acquired by Focus Features for a 2013 release. Focus CEO James Schamus and president Andrew Karpen made the announcement today at the Toronto International Film Festival, where the movie is having its world premiere.

Focus acquired the rights from Sidney Kimmel Entertainment (Ske), which financed the movie and which was represented at Toronto by Jim Tauber and Nick Hanks, with Wme Global and Creative Artists Agency acting as sales agents. International sales to the feature are being handled by Sierra/Affinity.

Several days ago, the news broke that True Blood actor Dane DeHaan had joined The Place Beyond the Pines as the son of characters played by Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes. Said to get involved in “a botched drug deal” with Bradley Cooper and Greta Gerwig‘s offspring, he was also mentioned as being one of the last major roles that needed to be cast. Putting two and two together would lead one to the assumption that one of the very last major roles requiring an actor is the aforementioned son of the other two leads.
