Image Source: Amazon When Liz Meriwether created the character of Jess for the pilot episode of New Girl, she based much of Jess’s quirky personality on herself. At the time, no specific actress had been envisioned for the role. However, when Zooey Deschanel read the script, she saw something special—and familiar—in the character. Deschanel realized that she and Jess shared a lot in common, particularly their mutual love of music. This musical connection wasn’t just a happy coincidence—Deschanel herself performed the now-iconic theme song for the show, adding a signature charm to its episodes. The humor in New Girl doesn’t just come from Jess’s quirks, though. As Deschanel explained, the comedy thrives in the clash of dynamics between the core group of characters. Jess, undeniably a “girly girl,” often found herself in humorous conflicts with her “guys’ guys” roommates. The different personalities—each...

Zooey Deschanel left New Girl in season 5 due to pregnancy, leading to a storyline with Megan Fox's character Reagan joining the group. The show went against typical sitcom tropes by having Jess and Reagan become friends instead of romantic rivals, adding a unique dynamic. Deschanel juggled motherhood with her role on New Girl, bonding with Megan Fox over the challenges of being a working parent.
As Zooey Deschanel was the lead of the popular sitcom, many fans wonder why Jess left New Girl temporarily in season 5. Created by Elizabeth Meriwether, New Girl followed Jessica Day (Deschanel), a bubbly, young teacher who, after discovering her boyfriend cheated on her, moved into a loft with three complete strangers: Nick Miller, Schmidt, and Coach, who was quickly replaced by Winston, though he did return. Aside from that, the main cast remained the same – except in season 5, when Jess left for a string of episodes.

New Girl was praised for its tone and sense of humor, along with the performances of its main cast, especially those of Max Greenfield and Jake Johnson. A revival of New Girl would undo its perfect ending. A reunion episode would be a fun addition to the series without messing with the ending. Nostalgia doesn't guarantee success and can hurt a show's legacy.
In the era of revivals in film and TV, New Girl shouldn’t join this trend as it would undo the show’s perfect ending. It doesn't take long for Jess to become friends with Schmidt (Max Greenfield), Nick (Jake Johnson), Coach (Damon Wayans Jr), and Winston (Lamorne Morris), forming a big, chaotic, but fun and supportive family. New Girl...

New Girl declined in popularity during its run and lost industry attention. Critics turned on the show around season 3, causing a change in perception of the show, per Jake Johnson. The show did not have a traditional farewell and talk show appearances, but found a new generation of viewers on Netflix.
New Girl star Jake Johnson candidly looks back on the show's mixed trajectory, detailing how it declined in popularity. The sitcom was created by Elizabeth Meriwether and ran for seven seasons on Fox. But it has maintained a supportive audience due to its streaming availability, showcasing the talents of Zooey Deschanel, Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris, Hannah Simone, Damon Wayans Jr., and Johnson. But when it concluded in 2018, New Girl's ratings had shrunk noticeably and lost the industry attention it once had.

New Girl may have a chance at a revival thanks to its success on streaming platforms and its dedicated fan base. Lamorne Morris is enthusiastic about the possibility of another season and believes the cast would be willing to return. While there is no specific timeline for a revival, both Zooey Deschanel and creator Liz Meriwether have expressed interest in bringing the show back when the timing is right.
With talks forever swirling about the show's potential return, Lamorne Morris weighs in on the chances of a New Girl revival. Morris starred in the beloved Fox sitcom as Winston Bishop, a former basketball player and quirky roommate to Zooey Deschanel's Jessica Day. As with the rest of New Girl's unique cast of characters, Winston quickly became a sitcom genre favorite for his odder sensibilities, including his affection for his cat Ferguson and his troubles in the dating world.

Five-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams joined us at our Deadline Red Sea Film Festival studio this week to discuss regional change, the role cinema played in her education as an actress and her next project: FX limited series Dying For Sex, which we detailed yesterday.
The Fabelmans and Brokeback Mountain actress told us she was moved to come to the Saudi Arabian festival given the amount of societal change underway in the country and the event’s foregrounding of female creatives.
“I was moved when I read about how quickly change has come to the region,” she said. “I was curious to see what the energy was like here and the people behind that change…A festival that is featuring 38 filmmakers, that’s not a token, that’s a movement. I want to come here and listen. That was my agenda. To listen to the women and men who are working here and making cinema.

The Best Limited Series/TV Movie Writing category has 111 submissions on the 2023 Emmys ballot, giving us six nominees this year. With the same number of nominees last year, they were “Dopesick” (“The People vs. Purdue Pharma” by Danny Strong), “The Dropout” (“I’m in a Hurry” by Elizabeth Meriwether), “Maid” (“Snaps” by Molly Smith Metzler), “Station Eleven” (“Unbroken Circle” by Patrick Somerville), “Impeachment: American Crime Story” (“Man Handled” by Sarah Burgess), and the winner “The White Lotus” (Mike White).
What makes last year interesting is that half of the shows in the category were not nominated for Best Limited Series, something that perhaps could repeat itself to a degree with this year’s potential nominees. Another thing of note is that almost all of the top contenders this year that had the option to submit multiple episodes only went with one, preventing any possibility of vote-splitting.

Elizabeth Meriwether's sitcom New Girl introduced Megan Fox’s Reagan Lucas for six episodes after Zooey Deschanel exited on maternity leave, but while she returned later on, she didn't stay forever — here is the Megan Fox New Girl exit explained. Reagan was popular among fans of the series and became a recurring character throughout season 6 when Nick rents out Jess' room while she's away on jury duty to pay for Schmidt's bachelor party. But considering the character was introduced as a filler for Deschanel’s Jess, her story arc was never intended to last long and, as a result, the Megan Fox New Girl run ended when season 6 wrapped.
Nick and Reagan hit it off and form a romantic relationship with one another. Once Jess returned, the Megan Fox New Girl arc seemed to come to a close, but it was reignited in season 6, and Nick’s romantic...

Zooey Deschanel explains why she is not rushing to make a New Girl revival. The sitcom, created by Elizabeth Meriwether, premiered on Fox back in 2011 and aired for seven seasons. It follows Jess (Deschanel) who, shortly after leaving her boyfriend, answers an ad on Craigslist and becomes roommates with three men: Nick, Winston, and Schmidt. A popular series during its initial run, New Girl has earned praise from critics and generated a strong fanbase, which has seemingly grown with streaming. In addition to Deschanel, the show stars Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris, and Hannah Simone.
Because New Girl and its cast are so beloved, questions surrounding a potential reboot have been brought up ever since the series ended. In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Deschanel says that while she does not see herself starring in revivals forever, she would be happy to return. Read her comments...

The New Girl cast is full of hugely talented actors bringing its quirky, lovable characters to life. The series revolves around Jess Day, a bubbly teacher who moves into a loft in Los Angeles with three wacky roommates after catching her boyfriend cheating on her. Created by Elizabeth Meriwether, New Girl ran for seven seasons and was a hit with both critics and audiences. The New Girl cast was given the freedom to improvise lines, and the spontaneity of the ad-libbed dialogue went a long way toward making the characters feel real and catching the attention of a mainstream audience.

New Girl star Jake Johnson says Nick is still together with Zooey Deschanel’s Jess. Originally conceived as a star vehicle for Deschanel, Fox’s New Girl quickly morphed into a genuine ensemble comedy, making great use of the talents of Deschanel’s co-stars Johnson, Max Greenberg, Lamorne Morris and Hannah Simone. When it came to romantic chemistry, the show also got plenty of mileage from the sparks that flew between Johnson’s schlubby Nick and Deschanel’s quirky Jess, and eventually had the two characters become a couple.
It’s now been five years since the still-beloved New Girl went off the air, and according to Johnson, those romantic sparks are still flying between Nick and Jess. Appearing at SXSW to promote his directorial debut Self Reliance, Johnson addressed continued talk of a New Girl revival, and assured fans that in his mind Nick and Jess have not yet broken up.
