Warning: Spoilers for the plot of Space Dandy 1.1 ahead
It’s hard to think of anything harder to review than a media product made in Japan. On one hand, you need to give the show/game/whatever some slack, because it’s usually aimed at an audience that has vastly different tastes than the average American/British/other audience. On the other, some of this stuff has very, very, very creepy, disturbing, or offensive subtexts.
Thankfully, Space Dandy is not your average anime.
What we have in Space Dandy is a comedic throwback to pulp-era space opera directed/showrun by Shinichiro Watanabe and written by a staff that includes a man who rates Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon as his Game of the Year for 2013. Watanabe might be best known for directing and showrunning Cowboy Bebop, a 26 episode series about bounty hunters in space Adult Swim reran from 2001 until partway...

Do You Look At the World Through Apple Eyes?
It’s been a long time coming, but Holo is finally here, and despite fan anxiety over name changes, a mix up of release dates, and a dubious choice of cover for the associated light novel, the wolf girl proves to have been more than worth the wait!
I’ve been excited about this series ever since seeing it in fandub. My friend/ Go teacher/ co-conspirator in world domination recommended it to me — more like demanded I watch it or Else! So I did, taking in half of the first season in one sitting. It cost me a lot of sleep, and I’ve been thanking/blaming him ever since.
If you missed our preview back in June, or like me, you can’t really remember back that far, or for that matter, much that happened before last weekend, Spice and...

It’s no accident that you are reading this column. In life there is no such thing as coincidence. There is only… inevitability…
I won’t even try to hide my enthusiasm for this series. If you remember my column on collecting anime swag, you know I own two XXXHOLiC wall scrolls — one autographed by Colleen Clinkenbeard, the voice of Yuko herself, along with a clock (also autographed), and a Yuko lapel pin. I made my own Watanuki/Doumeki cosplay, and there is a stuffed black Mokona plush over the TV. In other words, I’m a fan, and so you can imagine my excitement when Funimation released the entire series of XXXHOLiC as a boxed set.
XXXHOLiC, (pronounced “Holic”; the x’s are silent), tells the story of a boy named Watanuki, who has the curse of being able to see spirits. Wherever he goes, they are drawn to him.
