It’s a busy end to February on Netflix UK with 45 new additions to the library this week, including Illumination’s Super Mario Bros movie, Kate Hudson’s new Netflix comedy Running Point, and every episode of the first season of Pokemon Horizons.

“Running Point” is now streaming on Netflix, and if the story — and the team at the center of it — feels a little familiar, it’s probably because it is. The series is somewhat based in reality.

To be clear, the Waves are a fictional team. But yes, they are based on the Los Angeles Lakers, with their championship dominance and widespread love from fans. Additionally, Kate Hudson’s character Isla Gordon is based on a real person too: Lakers president and co-owner Jeanie Buss. And she has got a pretty long relationship with Hudson.

“Having known Jeanie since I was a teenager, I felt a unique connection to the character,” Hudson told Netflix’s Tudum. “Jeanie’s life and career in the male-dominated world of professional basketball are inspiring, and her willingness to let us explore a comedic version of that world was liberating.”

Now streaming on Netflix, the series focuses on Isla Gordon (Hudson), as she’s unexpectedly given control of her family’s basketball team, the Waves. Though a fictional team and story, “Running Point” is loosely based on Lakers president Jeanie Buss.

Ready for some slam-dunk laughs? Netflix's new original comedy series Running Point, from none other than Mindy Kaling, finally made its premiere on Feb. 27, and it's going to be tough to beat as the funniest comedy series of 2025. Kate Hudson makes an easy lay-up in her first foray into comedy television, finding a comfortable home in Kaling's witty writing.

Running Point takes a play from the real-life experience of Los Angeles Lakers president Jeanie Buss, but Kaling and her co-showrunners Ike Barinholtz and Dave Stassen turn the realistic setup up a notch into a larger-than-life comedy world. Isla Gordon (Hudson) unexpectedly takes over as president of her family's business, the successful Los Angeles Waves basketball team.

Isla hikes an uphill battle (in heels!) to be taken seriously amid doubts from her brothers, the board, the team, and the unrelenting public.

Mindy Kaling is back with Running Point. She has been a singular comic voice on television for the past fifteen years. Her Fox and Hulu series The Mindy Project, which you can also find streaming on Netflix, was one of the funniest sitcoms of the decade. Then came the semi-autobiographical Never Have I Ever, a hilarious coming-of-age story unlike anything else on television, whether streaming or network.

However, Running Point is nothing like those shows because it’s just another run-of-the-mill comedy. The series is not particularly funny, relying too heavily on excessive exposition and basketball lingo that isn’t executed well. It’s pleasant enough but ultimately a gigantic letdown, given the cast and the talent involved, particularly behind the camera.

Peak TV may technically be in the past, but its specter still lingers. How else do you get two flashy, star-studded TV shows about the Los Angeles Lakers in the span of three years? The first, HBO’s “Winning Time,” dramatized the basketball team’s years of triumph in the 1980s; the latest, Netflix’s “Running Point,” is both more contemporary and more fictional, though it has closer ties to the actual Lakers organization through owner Jeanie Buss and front office fixture Linda Rambis, both executive producers.

“Running Point” can and does stand on its own, but it’s useful to drill down on the comparison to “Winning Time” to establish why the newer show may stand a stronger chance at long-term success. Some of that potential comes down to shared strengths: like “Winning Time,” “Running Point” is as packed with famous faces, as any tribute to Hollywood’s home team ought to be.

Fabrizio Guido (Good Burger 2), Toby Sandeman (Power Book III: Raising Kanan), Chet Hanks (Your Honor), Keyla Monterroso Mejia (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Roberto Sanchez (Queen of the South) have joined the cast of Mindy Kaling’s Netflix series, set in the world of pro basketball, starring Kate Hudson.

Variety has learned exclusively that the comedy duo, who star in the upcoming film “Good Burger 2,” will be onboard when the Burgermobile from the film takes part in the 97th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

It was previously announced that the iconic car would be part of the parade, though Thompson and Mitchell’s participation was not known at that time. The car is described as weighing over 5,000 pounds, with a burger hood and french fry bumper. It can be seen in the teaser trailer for the film, which can be viewed below.

Mike Birbiglia Sets “The Old Man and the Pool” Comedy Special at Netflix

Following a run on both Broadway and in the West End, Mike Birbiglia is bringing his comedy special “The Old Man and the Pool” to Netflix for all to see.

The new special is Birbiglia’s fifth for the streamer, starting with 2008’s “What I Should Have Said Was Nothing” and up to his most recent, “The New One,” in 2019. “The Old Man and the Pool” sees Birbiglia “take on life’s big questions: why are we here? What’s next? Exactly how much chlorine are they putting in the Ymca pool?”

The show ran on Broadway from Nov. 13, 2022–Jan. 15, 2023, followed by its run in London’s West End from Sept. 12–Oct. 7. The hour-long special debuts on the streamer on Nov. 21.

Welcome back to Good Burger! After years of teasing a sequel, Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell are back for "Good Burger 2." On Aug. 21, Paramount+ dropped the first teaser, and it seems like no time has passed because Ed and Dex are up to their old antics. Then, on Oct. 30, the streamer dropped another full trailer for the highly anticipated sequel, teasing "the new adventures of Ed and Dex."

Per the new clip, it seems the duo's new adventures involve trying to hold onto their jobs as burger-serving robots take over their beloved restaurant that's on its way to becoming a global phenomenon.

Back in March, Jimmy Fallon and his crowd instantly went wild when Thompson and Mitchell revealed the "Good Burger 2" news on "The Tonight Show." "Ladies and gentlemen, Kel has something he would like to tell you," Thompson teased before handing the announcement over to his costar.

Awwww, here it goes! Kenan and Kel are back behind the counter at the home of the Good Burger. Paramount+ has just released the newest trailer for the sequel to the Nickelodeon feature film that stars Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell. Good Burger 2 brings back Dexter and Ed after 1997’s Good Burger had the duo take down the fast food conglomerate Mondo Burger. Paramount+ has released the first full trailer for “Good Burger 2.”

In the trailer, which can be seen below, Dexter (Kenan Thompson) and Ed (Kel Mitchell) learn that the evil Mega Corp is planning to put Mega Good Burgers in cities all over the world, staffed entirely by robots.

The film was originally announced back in March and will debut on Paramount+ on Nov. 22. "Good Burger" is a rather unlikely success story of '90s kids' entertainment. Back in the '90s, Nickelodeon created a sketch comedy show titled "All That," which was essentially the kids' version of "Saturday Night Live." It ran absurd sketches and launched the careers of many actors like Amanda Bynes, Nick Cannon, Katrina Johnson, Jack DeSena, Kel Mitchell, and Kenan Thompson — who would go on to become the longest-reigning "SNL" cast member ever.

And just like "SNL," "All That" would see some sketches turn into spin-offs, with the biggest one being "Good Burger." In the sketches, Kenan and Kel starred as Dexter and Ed, two fast food joint workers who get into all sorts of hijinks. The streaming service announced Monday that the followup to the beloved 1990s film will debut on Nov. 22 in the U.S. and Canada and then Nov. 23 in the U.K. and Australia. It will be available in additional international markets at a later date.
