One of the most accomplished and acclaimed masters of modern J-Horror, director Takashi Shimizu has been on the cutting edge of the genre’s popularity since he first emerged with his celebrated “Ju-On” entries that initially launched the movement in the early 2000s. Keeping his hand in the genre pretty consistent in the times since, among his most recent contributions is a loosely-connected trilogy of films known as the Village of Terror series that started with Howling Village, continued with Suicide Forest Village and now concludes with the most recent entry “Ox-Head Village” which celebrates its North American premiere at the New York Asian Film Festival.

Suicide Forest Village is the latest film from Takashi Shimizu, best known as the writer and director of The Grudge, both the original Japanese film and its US remake. But he has contributed a lot more to the genre both before and since. That includes an episode in another popular franchise, Tomie: Re-birth as well as Flight 7500 and Howling Village.
YouTuber Akina (Rinka Otani) livestreamed her trip into Aokigahara, the so-called Suicide Forest to prove that you can enter it and leave again. Needless to say things don’t go as planned. Hibiki watches it, both horrified and fascinated by what she sees.

One of the most venerated names in the J-Horror scene in the late 90s and early 2000s, Takashi Shimizu became one of the biggest genre directors in the world for creating the classic “Ju-On” series among many others, even finding himself heading to America to shoot an official remake of the film. While his projects since haven’t reached the level of unquenching fear as the original entries in the Grudge franchise, his latest effort “Howling Village” is a step in the right direction.

Sometimes, film titles do not live up to their names. Case in point: Shock Labyrinth 3D, which ultimately is not very shocking. Or exciting. In fact, it might just want to think about renaming itself Boring Labyrinth 3D (sort of). The film, directed by The Grudge series director Takashi Shimizu, is Japan’s first full-length, live-action digital 3D feature, but that’s about the only neat thing about it — if you can count stuffed rabbits sort of floating in your face and silver rain sort of coming out of the screen.
Childhood friends Ken, Mataki and Rin — estranged for years but now reunited 10 years later — are joined by the last of their group, Yuki, who has been missing since her disappearance at the House of Horrors a decade earlier. Her sudden reappearance in...

Seoul -- "The Shock Labyrinth," the latest film from "The Grudge" director Takashi Shimizu, is to be a 3D live-action movie represented in international markets by Fortissimo Films.
The story takes place in a theme park near Mount Fuji and follows a group of teens dealing with the shock return of a friend they had assumed to be dead.
Produced by Japan's Asmik Ace, the film also marks Shimizu's return to genre filmmaking after a hiatus of several years.
"The production represented a great challenge in creating a brand new way of expressing fear and telling a dramatic story via the medium of 3-D film. I hope as many of you as possible will find yourselves trapped in my labyrinth and enjoy the experience," he said.
The film is in postproduction, having begun principal photography in early July.

A new still has surfaced for Ju-on (The Grudge) director Takashi Shimizu’s latest, the 3D haunted house horror, The Shock Labyrinth. Based on a script penned by Daisuke Hosaka, the movie will follow a group of teenagers dealing with the sudden return of a friend who went missing a decade ago. When the friend falls ill, they take her to a hospital but end up trapped in a labyrinthine (as you do) haunted house. Still no sign of a trailer for the film - but it can’t be long now - the film opens in Japan in just over two months.

It has been three years since Takashi Shimizu stood beside a film camera and worn his directorial hat—literally. Eschewing the black leather cap that was seemingly glued to his head throughout the production of the Japanese Ju-on and American Grudge movies that made his name, Shimizu is not only sporting new headwear for his newest feature, but is also shooting with a new, custom 3-D digital system, the first for such a production in Japan.
Journeying down to the city of Tateyama, Fango paid a visit to the set of The Shock Labyrinth 3D last week to catch up with director Shimizu’s return to feature filmmaking. Within the peeling walls of a local hospital, Shimizu and his crew are hard at work on one of the final days of shooting. Seated behind a large LCD monitor, the filmmaker reaches over to a spare set of 3-D glasses and hands them to this writer.
