Universal’s “Scarface” remake just got a little help from their friends, Joel and Ethan Coen. According to Deadline, the Coen Brothers helped polish the script for the studio.
Additionally, the gangster film’s release date was also announced: August 10, 2018.
Set to be a modern story about the rise and fall of a Latino gangster, previous reports stated that Diego Luna was attached to star. Though nothing has been confirmed.
As of now, Universal is on the hunt for a director after Antoine Fuqua had to depart the project in order to focus on “The Equalizer” sequel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Hell or High Water” helmer David MacKenzie and “Patriots Day’s” Pete Berg are front-runners to direct the film. Both will be meeting with Universal executives in the following days.

Tschick

While Fatih Akin’s epic cap to his loose trilogy The Cut (2014) didn’t live up to expectations, we’re curious to see his latest, Tschick, an unexpected foray into ‘family film.’ Based on a cult novel by late writer Wolfgang Herndorfs, the story centers on 14-year-old Maik Klingenberg, part of a wealthy but dysfunctional family in Berlin. During this particular summer vacation his mom enters rehab while dad absconds on a romantic getaway with his secretary. Left to his own devices, Maik decides to take off with Tschick, a Russian immigrant classmate who shows up one day with a stolen car. The screenplay was adapated by actor/write/director Hark Bohm, who appeared in several feature by Rainer Werner Fassbinder.

Films with great women’s roles aren’t always great films. Films with poor female representation aren’t necessarily bad films. But poorly written female roles will always be a problem for cinema so long as they continue to persist. The damsel in distress. Angel-whore. The token girl. Trophy wives. Mother, daughter, sister. The unconditional love interest. These are among the popular clichés most frequently applied to female characters as they’re written on the page. Some films are so desperate for conflict that they just keep going to the well without altering the mold. Have women not earned the right by now to play more villains, complicated lovers, a-holes, The Best Friends, soldiers, comic reliefs or leads? Can a woman be sexy in a film and still have a great role? Yes. Give her agency. Can a woman support other characters but still have a great role? Yes. Keep her vital.

Neighbours
I really enjoyed Neighboursthis past week. The crash and the aftermath made for some really strong storytelling and I’m surprised at how prominent Chris has been in the storyline. Frankly, I thought he would only play a minor supporting role in his friends' drama, like he has in much of the time on this show. I never expected Chris to be front and center. I think James Mason has been very good as Chris struggles to deal with what’s happened, though he needs to be a more convincing crier. A few tears might help.
One thing that never changes about this show, however, is that Chris has lousy friends. Both Tash and Summer ragged on Andrew about how selfish he was being, more concerned about his money than Chris’ plight, but neither of them bothered to go with Chris when he went...

Best known for commercial actioners and comedies like the Rush Hours and the imminent Tower Heist, Brett Ratner looks to be getting serious for one of his future projects: a Nazi-hunting drama about Hunting Eichmann.Adolf Eichmann was a high-ranking SS officer during the Second World War, and one of the major figures behind the conception and facilitation of the Final Solution: he organised the logistics behind the mass deportation of Jews to the ghettos and concentration camps of Eastern Europe. After the war he fled to Argentina, where he worked as a foreman in a Mercedes-Benz factory. He was finally tracked down in 1960 by the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad, tried for crimes against humanity, and hanged in 1962, the only execution ever to result from a civil trial in Israel. As the title suggests, it's his post-war investigation and pursuit that concerns Hunting Eichmann, a thriller about the...

Kaboom
Opens: 2011
Cast: Thomas Dekker, Haley Bennett, Juno Temple, Kelly Lynch, James Duval
Director: Gregg Araki
Summary: Smith's everyday life in the dorm - hanging out with his arty, sarcastic best friend Stella, hooking up with a beautiful free spirit named London, lusting for his gorgeous but dim surfer roommate Thor - all gets turned upside-down after one fateful, terrifying night.
Analysis: A year after "Thelma and Louise" came "The Living End", an independent film which had a similar premise but made the protagonists two gay HIV+ men. It was raw, intense and signalled the arrival of a new talent in the form of filmmaker Gregg Araki. In the subsequent two decades, he's delivered several trippy films involving young, good-looking omnisexual people having lots of graphic sex and dealing with some wacky cobbled together plot shenanigans.
The tone has ranged the light-hearted "Splendor" and "Nowhere" to the darker "Mysterious Skin...

Is Jesse James ready to move on? The motorcycle mogul, whose divorce from Sandra Bullock was finalized in June, was spotted having dinner with fellow tattoo enthusiast and La Ink star Kat Von D in Las Vegas Saturday night. Settling into a table at Palms Casino Resort's N9NE, the duo didn't bother spreading out in the oversized booth, but got cozy by sitting right next to each other. The two shared the restaurant's signature rock shrimp and classic Caesar salad. They also both enjoyed the filet with a side of asparagus, and drank Fiji water with dinner. Related: Sandra Bullock,...

You Have No Idea How I Suffer For My, Um, Art
If there is any task I truly hate as the editor of AfterElton.com, it's having to deal with the Hot 100 every year. The sheer torture of having to check each and every one of your Hot 100 comments for the photos of hot guys you have posted is excruciating.
I can't tell you how much I dread having to— ooh, someone just a posted a new picture of Eddie Cibrian! And check out that one of Sendhil Ramamurthy! Smokin'!
Cibrian is Spanish for "sex on a stick"
Um, where was I? Anyway, I was going to share my Hot 100 pics this week, but it occurs to me that you guys are probably sick of hot guys by this point. In fact, I can sense you are hungering for something more intellectual, so today's column is devoted to a discussion of quantum mechanics.

I’m writing this late on Thursday evening, full of turkey and stuffing and good will toward my fellow man. And I’ve been thinking that I don’t have any theme to unify them – I almost had three books starting with “G” and then almost had three volume twos -- but a theme just jumped out and poked me. Today is Black Friday, and these three books all fit that theme: they’re all pretty black. (Yes, I know that’s not what “Black Friday” means, but humor me.)
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, Vol. 1
Manga by Mahiro Maeda; Scenario by Yura Ariwara; Planning by Mahiro Maeda and Gonzo
Del Rey, November 2008, $10.95
Gankutsuou is the least dark, at least at this point, but it clearly is going to get darker and bleaker. For one thing, it’s explicitly a retelling of Dumas’s novel The Count of...
