But when Hollywood got a hold of him, they hired Tom Cruise to portray that mountain of muscle in 2012's "Jack Reacher" and 2016's "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back." Unfortunately, at 5-ft 7 inches, the "Mission: Impossible" star just didn't work for many fans. An article in the LA Times quotes one incensed Reacher adherent thusly:

"I can not [sic] believe they actually used an arrogant overexposed short Imbecile to create such an awesome character. I will not see it and it literally Ruined the whole character for me. How Could They Do This?"

Epic Pictures has revealed the trailer for an indie hitman action movie titled The Last Mark, yet another movie repeating pretty much the same plot of a hitman who has to do one last job before he retires. But he can't take out this person because it's a woman. Oh how original. This film opens on VOD at the beginning of March if anyone wants to watch. After a young woman witnesses a mob hit, a seasoned assassin and his psychotic partner must track her down before she turns them in, but she proves to be the hardest mark to kill. A mutant mashup of Squid Game, The Hunger Games and Suicide Squad, this cheap and cheerless sci-fi action film posits a future wherein wealthy hunters come to a remote island to pursue and kill human targets foolishly hoping for a big win if they survive.

Apex, the company that runs the show, is represented by a hologram hostess named West (Alexia Fast), who has a posh British accent as if it’s the mid-1990s when that was still a signifier of evil. When one of Apex’s most ruthless but regular customers, multi-trillionaire Rainsford (Neal McDonough), complains that the prey have become too easy, West brings in Malone (Bruce Willis), a prisoner so notorious for his cunning and ferocity he’s been kept in solitary confinement for years. The synopsis for We Had It Coming says, "In this allegorical tale of woman versus man, Anna looks to avenge her younger sister who was tormented by an abusive pimp."

Writer, producer, and director Paul Barbeau has crafted a tale in which Anna, in her course for vengeance, is subjected to a torrent of unwarranted, negligent, and abusive behavior from pretty much every man in her path.

Barbeau credits the Jeffrey Epstein affair and Ghislaine Maxwell's role in it as his launching point, seemingly hoping to expose the sad realities that women are still victimized almost daily for myriad reasons without even realizing it.

Perhaps using a drug- and prostitution-fueled plot robs the story of some of its allegorical validity.

The points are so in your face that you don't get much time to consider how it relates to the subtler indignities women suffered like those deceived by Epstein.

In the run-up to next month’s Cannes Festival, Cologne-based Media Luna New Films has acquired international rights to “We Had It Coming,” starring Natalie Krill and Brazil’s “The Friendly Man,” one of the standouts at Ventana Sur’s strong Copia Final showcase of near-finished Latin American movies.

MK2 Mile End will distribute “We Had It Coming” in Canada; O2 Play, the theatrical, TV and DVD distribution company of Fernando Mereilles’ O2 Filmes production house, will release “The Friendly Man,” now in advanced post-production, in Brazil.

Wgn America’s nuclear bomb development period drama Manhattan is poised to return for a second season later this year with some major new additions to the cast.

Created by Masters of Sex scribe Sam Shaw, the show’s second season now has its first trailer. Manhattan’s second season will see John Benjamin Hickey, Olivia Williams, and Alexia Fast joined by William Petersen and Neve Campbell.

The show is set in 1943 and is a dramatised version of the goings-on of The Manhattan Project, real-life experiment by the Us government where the country’s top scientists were quarantined in a desert facility in Los Alamos, New Mexico, and tasked with making feasible a nuclear bomb to use in the then-ongoing World War II.

Former CSI star William Petersen is returning to television with a series regular role on the second season of the WGN America drama series Manhattan.

Created and written by Sam Shaw and directed by Thomas Schlamme, Manhattan is set against the backdrop of the mission to build the world’s first atomic bomb and follows the brilliant but flawed scientists and their families in Los Alamos. Petersen will play Col. Emmett Darrow, the enigmatic new ranking military officer at Los Alamos. A deeply religious and patriotic man, Darrow feels called by God to usher in the atomic future and to spread American values across the globe.

Produced by Lionsgate Television, Skydance Television and Tribune Studios, Manhattan will begin production on its second season in April in New Mexico for a 2015 debut on WGN America.

A house straight out of Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest turns out to be Marquis de Sade's chateau with Mozart's Magic Flute filling the icy air.

At the Crosby Street Hotel, I started with greetings from Alessandro Nivola, who is starring on Broadway with Bradley Cooper and Patricia Clarkson in The Elephant Man. Atom and I went on to discuss the link to The Sweet Hereafter, fairy tales, Greek mythology, Cornwall and shifting perception, and ended up at Die Walküre and Remember.

Sigh. This will have to be another one of those reviews which must call upon the oftused quote from Mommie Dearest Its not good. And it totally wasnt. The first indication that this might be a challenge was the opening credits. The lead actress (Alexia Fast) was later listed as a camera operator. There was some initial doubt that it was the same person. But indeed it was.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s legion of fans will get their chance to see the filmmaker’s latest Inherent Vice – at least those in New York and L.A. after a long build-up of anticipation. Studio Warner Bros. is handling the director’s latest, set in a drug-laced L.A. in the 1970s. Barring some unforeseen cataclysm, the feature is easily going to be this week’s b.o. superstar and likely one of the year’s biggest per screen debuts. How it will fare against other fall b.o. knock-outs like Searchlight’s Birdman or TWC’s The Imitation Game remains to be seen. A slew of Specialty openers will coincide with the Inherent Vice juggernaut. Originally one of Canada's great formalist masters of squirrelly obsession, Atom Egoyan has lost his way since he appeared in the late '80s, hunting for relevance as his material and style have crept toward the lukewarm mainstream. Though its viewership has been quite small, Manahattan has been renewed for a second season on Wgn America. The period TV show's first season finale airs this Sunday night.

Set in 1943, Manhattan follows the residents of a secret town of Los Alamos, New Mexico. Hidden away by the federal government, scientists live there with their families while they work to build the world's first atomic bomb. The cast includes John Benjamin Hickey, Olivia Williams, Alexia Fast, Ashley Zukerman, Rachel Brosnahan, Daniel Stern, Katja Herbers, Christopher Denham, Harry Lloyd, Michael Chernus, Eddie Shin, Daniel London, and Mark Moses.

The 11 episodes that have aired so far have averaged a 0.08 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 420,000 viewers. The cable channel is still very new to producing their own scripted series so likely has low expectations at this point.

Wgn America is still very new to producing their original scripted series so it's hard to know what they consider a ratings success. Salem was renewed for a second season. Will the new Manhattan series be renewed as well or will it be cancelled? We'll have to wait and see.

For those of you who felt last year’s Prisoners was too lighthearted a jaunt down the misery lane of child abduction, good news: Atom Egoyan’s The Captive is here to cover every parent’s worst nightmare in ghoulish detail. Not psychological detail, mind you. The Captive is bewitched by many aspects of kidnapping and pedophilia: chiefly, the tech, the terminology, and the methods of a modern child abuse ring. But when it comes to characters, acting, direction, or the emotional state of its endangered subjects, The Captive isn’t all that interested.

A deceptively elegant 360-pan of wintery Niagara wilderness introduces the film, which from there on operates with the subtlety and restraint of front-page tabloid font. Egoyan kindly opens the following shot with a TV playing opera in the background, so as to remind you that what you’re watching isn’t quite the pinnacle of distraught human tragedy.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment announced the DVD release of Grace: The Possession, which is neither a sequel to Grace or The Possession. Shooting took place last summer on the film under the direction of Jeff Chan.

Ryan Reynolds has a new psychological thriller coming out called The Captive, and it looks like it's going to be a very intense movie. It was directed by Atom Egoyan (Chloe, The Devil's Knot), and it also stars Scott Speedman, Mireille Enos, Rosario Dawson, Kevin Durand, Alexia Fast, and Bruce Greenwood. 

The story follows Matthew (Reynolds) and Tina (Enos), "a couple torn apart by the circumstances behind the mysterious disappearance of their daughter, who seems to be alive in captivity eight years later with her unknown location being broadcast online, leaving officials perplexed as they attempt to find her."

There's no official release date set yet.

Atom Egoyan went to the Cannes Film Festival this spring with this latest effort, "The Captive," and the results were not good. Not even close. Our own Jessica Kiang noted that were boos scattered at her screening, and her savage review called the film a "lurid, credulity-stretching" dud, and something of a "Prisoners"-lite as it also tackles a missing child, and the consequences that fall out on her parents and those around them. Starring Ryan Reynolds, Scott Speedman, Mireille Enos, Rosario Dawson, Kevin Durand, Alexia Fast and Bruce Greenwood, the story centers around the disappearance of young girl, and what follows when eight years later, clues begin to surface that she's alive. What gets uncovered is something sinister, criminal and creepy, with the film hopping around in time, to tell a story of the investigation and much more. On paper it sounds like something decent, but in execution, it appears not to have.

We’re in desperate need of a new dramatic period piece to fill the void that’s been left by Mad Men, which is currently on an annoyingly long hiatus between halves of its final season. Luckily, Wgn may have just what we need, as seen by the debut trailer for their enticing new drama series, Manhattan.

Manhattan chronicles the lives of the men who worked secretly on the famous Manhattan Project in Lost Alamos, New Mexico in the 1940s, and how building the first atomic bomb behind closed doors affected their lives and families. The series was created and written by Masters of Sex alum Sam Shaw, with The West Wing and Parenthood director Thomas Schlamme at the helm. John Benjamin Hickey, Olivia Williams, Daniel Stern, Ashley Zuckerman, Rechel Brosnahan, Katja Herbers, Alexia Fast, Christopher Denham, Harry Lloyd, Michael Chernus and Eddie Shin star.

Atom Egoyan’s The Captive tells the story of a little girl kidnapped from the back of her father’s car at the age of ten. Eight years go by, apparently without word of her, before some mysterious events simultaneously occur, indicating that the lost girl is still alive. Events take place in a small town close to Niagara Falls, which occasionally acts as a dramatic backdrop to events.

A starry cast leads this tale, with Ryan Reynolds playing the dad, Matthew, Rosario Dawson as the detective in charge of child abuse cases, and Kevin Durand as the kidnapper and keeper of Cassandra (Alexia Fast). Of these three leads, only Reynolds comes out relatively unharmed.
