'Peepli Live' (2010)
Starring Omkar Das Manikpuri, Raghubir Yadav, Shalini Vatsa, Malaika Shenoy, Nawazuddin Siddiqui
Many will say that 'Peepli Live' is not your typical Bollywood film—it is and it isn't. It shows a side of India that's grinding instead of glamorous, it's a small film rather than a larger-than-life one, and there are no big-name stars in it. But one very big Bollywood name produced it—Aamir Khan—and it is still fundamentally a Bollywood film.
The selective Aamir Khan Productions has produced less than a handful of films since its formation nearly a decade ago, including one—the company's first, 'Lagaan' (2001)—that was nominated for an Academy Award (only the third Indian film in history to get an Oscar nod), and there's a good chance 'Peepli Live' could be the next Indian film to wind up in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

Aamir Khan.s Midas touch continues with his production venture .Peepli Live., a non commercial film about farmer suicides, doing well on its opening day, taking the actor pleasantly by surprise, and raking up about Rs.70 million and still counting..Initially, we had planned to open with 200 screens. But the reaction to the promos and trailers has been most encouraging. We are trying to react to the perceived demand to the film,. said Aamir in a statement.Journalist-turned-director Anusha Rizvi.s direcotrial debut, .Peepli Live. was made on a budget of approximately Rs.100 million (including marketing costs) and recovered its investment even before its release by selling its satellite rights for Rs.100 million and music rights for Rs.40 million...Peepli Live. has opened extremely well. What is surprising is the reaction from single screens - it opened to almost 90 to 95 percent in single screens,. said a source close to Aamir.

Director: Anusha Rizvi
Actors: Omkar Das, Raghuvir Yadav, Shalini Vatsa, Malaika Shenoy, Vishal Sharma, Nowaz
Rating: 4 out of 5
Watching ‘Peepli Live’ makes you wonder - does Aamir Khan possess a magic lamp? Of course, the film is not about this Midas-touch man. Yet it is about him. Because every year scores of beautiful films like this one never reach your eyeballs.
A simple comment, “Brother what will happen if our land goes”, a satirical song ‘Desh Mera’ by Indian Ocean and a ride on a rickety transport locally called ‘Jugaad’ opens the film and sets the mood. The transport where everyone hangs for a ride and our ‘hero’ pukes out of is an analogy for India.
Brothers Natha (Omkar) and Budhiya (Raghuvir) are two ‘insignificant’ farmers barely living in the Cm’s constituency. Like farmers everywhere, no one gives a damn about them. A stray, drunk comment by Natha reported...

Movie Review: Peepli Live; Star cast: Omkar Das Manikpuri, Raghuveer Yadav, Malaika Shenoy, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Shalini Vatsa, Vishal Sharma and Naseeruddin Shah; Director: Anusha Rizvi; Rating: ***1/2 – Is a brilliant satire.
During times when a majority of Hindi films carrying big star names have been flopping left, right center attributed to the fact that their content is poor, comes Aamir Khan produced Peepli [Live] starring no big names but superbly directed strong on content brilliant multi layered satire. It takes you straight into the heart of the real.

It is a miracle that a script like ‘Peepli Live’ has been turned into a movie and has got a commercial release. It is certainly surprising that a mainstream filmmaker like Aamir Khan decided to invest money in a movie that puts the spotlight on grave issues like the plight of Indian peasants.

London -- U.K. indie distributor Artificial Eye has snapped up Anusha Rizvi and Mahmood Farooqui's "Peepli Live," a farcical contemporary comedy set in rural India.
Also written by Rizvi, the movie is produced by Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao with co-producer Ronnie Screwvala and tells the story of an impoverished farmer who learns of a government scheme to aid the families of indebted farmers if they commit suicide and thus decides on a very drastic plan to save his land from repossession.
The film stars Omkar Das Manikpuri alongside Raghubir Yadav, model, actor and television presenter Malaika Shenoy, Shalini Vatsa, Farrukh Jaffer, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Vishal O Sharma.
"Peepli Live" was the first Indian film to unspool in the World Cinema competitive section at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year before then showcasing at the Berlin International Film Festival 2010.
