This year marks the 40th anniversary of the MTV Video Music Awards. The inaugural ceremony, held at Radio City Music Hall and hosted by Dan Aykroyd and Bette Midler in 1984, saw the Cars taking home video of the year their groundbreaking clip for “You Might Think.”
Since then, the VMAs have doled out 39 more trophies for their top prize, with only a small handful of acts joining the club of repeat winners. Taylor Swift has racked up four wins while Eminem, Rihanna, and Beyoncé have notched two a piece (both Swift and Eminem have a shot at adding to their totals again this year).
Despite MTV handing over the choice to viewers in 2006, the quality of the winners in the category has remained surprisingly consistent, with only a few total duds or headscratchers. To celebrate the VMAs’ ruby anniversary, we ranked all 40 video of the year winners from worst to best.

The Film Department of the Tokyo University of Arts has a high-profile council consisting of the directors Nobuhiro Suwa and Akihito Shiota, the screenwriters Michiko Oishi and Yuji Sakamoto, and from the production sector Shoji Masui and Shozo Ichiyama. Every year the department presents a body of work from its students. This year, nine students and three alumni from the university created 11 silent films spanning from mysteries, thrillers, monsters, samurai tales, and animation, which were released under the title “Silent Movie”. On the occasion of Japan Society's Japan Cuts Film Festival, the audience gets the opportunity to see the next generation of filmmakers play with cinema's past. Because all films are narrated by a so-called benshi, a storyteller that dubs the moving images. Renowned benshi Ichiro Kataoka picks up the old tradition and mixes modern with forgotten tradition.

Fate played a role in bringing TLC singer Chilli and "Boy Meets World" alum Matthew Lawrence together. In a March 3 interview with Entertainment Tonight, the former sitcom star shared details about how he and Chilli met for the first time since the duo confirmed their relationship on Instagram on Jan. 1.
According to Lawrence, a snowstorm led to the future couple ending up on the same plane ride, and they immediately hit it off. "So we were at this thing. We were working. We just said hello in passing and probably nothing would've come of that, but there was this big snowstorm," Lawrence said.
He continued, "I had to be back for work, so I was getting them [the airline] to change my flights all around. The only flight I could get was a connecting flight through Atlanta. She lives in Atlanta. So, she was flying on that flight.

Has Diane gone over to the dark side? Is Cooper’s trusty Gal Friday no longer trustworthy? Why is she getting mysterious texts from Evil Cooper? Are they in cahoots? Wasn’t she just yelling at him in the prison and hinting at some horrible misdeeds on his part? Or does she maybe think the texts are coming from somebody else? Why doesn’t she mention all this to her old smoke-buddy Gordon Cole? Ok, enough Diane questions, on with the recap of Twin Peaks Episode 9:

Since the medium’s infancy, viewers have enjoyed sharing holidays with their favourite television characters. We grow invested in our friends on screen over the years; spending Christmas with them is a rite of passage, a chance for us to share tradition from our world with the fictional ones we see on screen. Some shows embrace the season wholeheartedly, characters in good spirits and enjoying the trappings of the season; others skew a little darker, bringing the more oppressive, burdensome side of the holidays to life. To mark the release of Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa, Rob takes us through the high points of Alan Partridge's TV career...
Certain TV shows are watched so excessively that quoting them in general conversation has just became part of the norm. The Office, The Simpsons and Spaced are three such, but none have been stolen from with quite as much regularity as Norfolk’s favourite son, Alan Partridge. For better or for worse, Partridgisms have cemented their place in our everyday vernacular. The likes of, “cos I’m a bloody bloke”, “see the match?” and “scum, sub-human scum” are just a few of the phrases that AP (with a little help from his writers) has gifted to the world over the years.
He may be a socially awkward, insensitive, selfish, narcissist obsessed with his own celebrity status, but despite all this, it’s hard to not love Alan.

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about shows including Girls, The Good Wife, New Girl and Supernatural!
1 | Could there a correlation between Andy Samberg’s rather random Saturday Night Live return/face time and the fact that he now has a sitcom pilot in contention?
2 | What did Girls‘ Allison Williams do to piss off Lena Dunham? Three episodes into Season 2 and her Marnie character has already endured a painfully awkward sex scene with a gay man and, this week, a threesome involving a doll!

Before we start, I have to say that I looooooove me a Christmas horror movie. From Gremlins to Silent Night, Deadly Night to Christmas Evil to Black Christmas to Jaws: The Revenge, I can't get enough of a blood-spattered yuletide. (The only Christmas movie too scary for me? Christmas With the Kranks. [Shudder])

The Best Of Family Guy
Stars: Seth MacFarlane, Mila Kunis, Seth Green, Alex Borstein, Mike Henry | Created by Seth MacFarlane
At first glance a “Best Of” of Family Guy would seem like a waste of time and effort given the fact that BBC Three tend to repeat the series ad nauseum. But surprisingly this collection of episodes featured some I seem to have forgotten about and some that do indeed deserve, nay warrant, a rewatch.
The Best Of Family Guy includes Seth McFarlane’s 10 personal favourite episodes chosen especially for this release such as the outrageous Barely Legal; the fantastic I Dream Of Jesus in which the titular Jesus comes to live with the Griffin’s and then lets fame get to his head; and the funny as hell Road to Germany, which mixes Back to the Future and Marx Brothers references with Nazi’s and Jewish-targeted humour in a...

Ignoring the 1954 American television version of Casino Royale (and one really should), it’s been 50 years this month since James Bond first graced the silver screen and entered the world’s consciousness and collective hearts. Created by author and former secret service agent Ian Fleming, Bond was a Commander in Her Majesty’s Royal Navy who became a Double-o agent of MI6. He’s a spy who kills and loves without conscience, suave yet deadly. The classic cliché of a man who women want and men want to be. Six actors and twenty-two official movies later, and Bond is still just as popular. And now, Capitol Records and MGM Music have released a new album filled with all sorts of musical goodies from those films.
The two-disc set starts off with The John Barry Orchestra performing the now iconic “James Bond Theme”, which is just as exciting to listen to...

After Adele's Bond theme failed to top the charts, we wonder if all Bond themes are commercially cursed
There were high hopes for Adele's theme song to the new James Bond film, Skyfall – not least the expectation that this would be the first 007 signature track to top the UK charts. It's not as if a number one chart position has been a problem for the multi-award winning Adele, after all.
Yet it seems the singer may have been struck down by what many regard as a Bond-related curse. Skyfall only reached number two in this week's charts, and was held off top spot by Swedish House Mafia, of all people. Here are a few past Bond themes that also failed to make it to the top of the charts – and a few that didn't make them at all ...

The Bond franchise is perhaps the only film property where just as much anticipation is placed on of the theme song as much as the film itself. The decades-long tradition of enlisting the biggest pop acts on the planet to pen a retro-infused, string accompanied pop themes continues with the soon to be released "Skyfall" single from Adele this week.
In honor of 007 scoring the "Rolling in the Deep" singer to croon tales of his mischief, here's a look back at some of the best and worst Bond themes ever according to some guy on the internet.
The Best
1967 - Nancy Sinatra & John Barry – "You Only Live Twice" from "You Only Live Twice"
Nancy Sinatra's other hit, this song is one of the great examples that define the Bond theme: the marriage of tense and complex score with simple and sweet pop melodies.

To mark the 50th Anniversary of one of the most successful movie franchises of all time and with filming now complete on James Bond’s 23rd official outing in Skyfall due for release later this year, I have been tasked with taking a retrospective look at the films that turned author Ian Fleming’s creation into one of the most recognised and iconic characters in film history.
Following Roger Moore’s departure from the lead role after starring in the previous seven films, the fifteenth James Bond film, The Living Daylights, was seized upon as an opportunity to reboot the series with not only a new Bond but a new approach to the franchise that had become rather formulaic over the past 25 years. Taking the title from one of Fleming’s short stories, writers Richard Maibaum and Michael G. Wilson took the character back to his roots making a conscious...

If you know (or are) a fan of James Bond films, especially if you’re looking to expand your Blu-Ray collection, you’ll want to mark your calendars for September 25th. The full collection, along with some great bonus features, will be released as Bond 50, to celebrate 50 years of James Bond.
Beyond getting all 22 films, which come with over 100 hours of bonus features, there will also be an additional disc of bonuses, with all new featurettes, including The World of Bond, a Pop-Up Trivia optional ride through the entire franchise. While any 22-movie set is unlikely to come with an “automatic purchase” price tag, this is one that is sure to tempt quite a few fans. The entire set of Bond films is hard to pass up, and with the nearly unbelievable treasure trove of bonuses, it really is a collection that kicks up the value.

Outside of all of that, another thing that should have fans excited is that it this is the first time 9 of these films have been available in high-definition. The set is scheduled to release on September 25th,...

We live in an era of hyper-referential humor. Shows as diverse as Glee, Community, and South Park all regularly feature “theme” episodes that riff on pop culture iconography — look at Glee’s Christmas episode (in which Sue Sylvester re-enacted How the Grinch Stole Christmas), or Community’s upcoming Pulp Fiction episode, or the episode of South Park that riffed on Tron (before Tron was briefly cool and then lame again). You can thank The Simpsons for all the nonstop pop culture references — Matt Groening’s iconic animated series turned hyper-referentiality into an art form, regularly packing in throwaway references to...

(In anticipation of Quantum of Solace, we're rerunning some of our favorite Bond posts alongside a few new ones. Enjoy!)

One of the pleasures of anticipating a new James Bond film is considering which singer or band would be most appropriate to add themselves to the long and diverse list of James Bond themes. (Wouldn't a Radiohead theme song be just great? Or the Pixies?) It's almost like winning some kind of award. These songs will likely be revived and re-packaged for generations to come. Not all of the choices have been particularly timeless ("The Living Daylights" by A-ha), and many others are not without a cheeseball flavor (Tom Jones strutting through "Thunderball"). It's also obvious that a great song does not guarantee a good movie, and vice-versa. Hence, as terrific as Casino Royale was, the song by Chris Cornell was only so-so. But no matter...

As the description on You Tube reads: "Ever wish songs just sang what was happening in the music video? Well now they do." Indeed ... someone edited one of our favorite music videos of all time to include a whole new set of lyrics that sing about what's actually going on in the video. The song and video in question is A-ha's Take On Me, which has been spoofed before (see this bit from Family Guy). Sure, it's not directly related to a movie, but it's damn funny to watch and might just help you through the remainder of the work day. Enjoy!
