Jean-Paul Sartre is known for the brutally honest aphorism “hell is other people.” While the French philosopher was likely referring to social interaction and fears of forced extroversion, he could just as easily have been thinking of life in a small town. These tiny burgs offer the illusion of isolation—along with picturesque scenery—but more often than not they become breeding grounds for all types of strange behavior. Josh Ruben explores the humor and horror of this close camaraderie with his 2021 film Werewolves Within.
Based on a video game, the small town of Beaverton is turned upside down when a werewolf moves in and begins stealthily using her neighbors’ petty grievances to lay the groundwork for her next meal.

For those who've only known an existence with home gaming consoles, it might feel wild to realize that the video game movie genre is still quite young. The first movie to be based on a pre-existing video game was Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel's mangled-by-studio-interference adaptation of "Super Mario Bros.," a massive box office flop that caused studios to tap the brakes on future excursions in this newfangled genre. While 1995's sensibly budgeted "Mortal Kombat" turned a sizable profit for New Line, video game movies weren't viewed as potential blockbusters by the studios until "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" grossed $275 million worldwide in 2001. The floodgates opened over the next decade, but the movies were, with very few exceptions (Paul W.S. Anderson's first "Resident Evil" and Christophe Gans' "Silent Hill"), about as bad as movies get.

Ryan Gosling's new sci-fi movie Project Hail Mary gets an exciting tease as it wraps filming. Project Hail Mary is an alien sci-fi movie about an astronaut (Gosling) who is tasked with saving Earth while he is alone in outer space. The sci-fi film is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and based on a screenplay by Drew Goddard, which adapts a book by Andy Weir. In addition to Gosling, the project features a leading cast including Anatomy of a Fall's Sandra Hüller, Milana Vayntrub, Bastian Antonio Fuentes, Isla McRae, and James Wright.
Per Variety, Project Hail Mary has wrapped filming. As the project's shooting came to a close, screenwriter Goddard shares some intriguing thoughts on the movie. The writer says, "If you like The Martian, I suspect you’re really going to like what we’re cooking up with ‘Hail Mary.' " He also praises directors Lord and Miller,...

A Marvel actor has recently returned for the fourth time, and it’s finally time for the studio to make her character officially part of the MCU. Marvel has spent over two decades developing the MCU into a well-respected franchise, and its success has meant that more heroes get to be in the spotlight. There is no shortage of niche characters from Marvel Comics, and having the substantial fanbase that they have means that the MCU can take bigger risks with the characters who get projects.
An obscure Marvel hero who has recently gotten a lot of attention is Squirrel Girl. She is currently featured as a playable hero in the new game Marvel Rivals, and many fans are taking an interest in Doreen Green’s story. She is voiced by actor Milana Vayntrub, who is best known for her roles in This Is Us and numerous AT&T commercials. The...

Many players were introduced to the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl through Marvel Rivals, and they might be wondering why she is so strong.
Marvel Television almost gave general audiences greater exposure to this character in 2018 with a New Warriors series, which would have starred Milana Vayntrub as Squirrel Girl. Unfortunately, despite a seemingly exciting pilot episode, the series failed to get picked up for a full season order.
Over the years, Vayntrub's initial casting wasn't wasted, as she quickly became the go-to voice for Doreen Green in cartoons and video games. She was even perfectly cast as Squirrel Girl again in Marvel Rivals.

Marvel seems to come back to one actress over and over again, although they have yet to appear in live action. Marvel has been around for a long time, but its popularity on the big screen has peaked over the last two decades. With the rise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Marvel has had the opportunity to shine a light on dozens of the lesser known characters from its extensive roster in a variety of mediums.
This has been an outstanding factor in bringing the nerdy and geeky world of comics into the mainstream. However, even the McU's success has struggled to keep the largest franchise cinematic universe going on just the big screen, and Marvel has leaned in to producing more cartoons and video games to buoy up the diverse portfolio of content. But earlier in the run, there was one Marvel TV show that was greenlit for 10 episodes,...

‘Marvel Rivals’ will launch on December 6, 2024. Some new characters were added to the game and now we have a list of what we think are the full 33 characters coming.
The game will be a free-to-play 6 v 6 third-person hero shooter released for Microsoft, Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
There will be 33 playable characters, including: Adam Warlock Black Panther Black Widow Captain America Cloak and Dagger Doctor Strange Groot Hawkeye Hela Hulk Iron Fist Iron Man Jeff the Land Shark Loki Luna Snow Magik Magneto Mantis Moon Knight Namor Peni Parker Psylocke Punisher Rocket Raccoon Scarlet Witch Spider-Man[a] Squirrel Girl Star-Lord Storm Thor Venom Winter Soldier Wolverine
There are some really popular characters in the roster. I’m excited that Squirrel Girl is going to be done by Milana Vayntrub. She was supposed to play her on screen, too, but that didn’t work out. She would have been perfect for the character.

With Netflix still experiencing a staggering response to “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” the streamer dropped another title on the same subject: “The Menendez Brothers,” a documentary directed by Alejandro Hartmann and featuring exclusive interviews with Lyle and Erik from prison.
Viewers familiar with the life and trials of Lyle and Erik Menendez will hear familiar recollections of old headlines; about the night they murdered their parents in 1989, the spending spree they went on before getting arrested, the dual trial and hung juries, and the allegations of abuse in their home. Hartmann and his team collected over 20 hours of interviews with the Menendez brothers while they serve life sentences in federal prison, as well as new interviews with family members, reporters, jury members, and lead prosecutor on the first trials, Pam Bozanich.

Bad Shabbos explores a dysfunctional family dinner by going to thrilling and comedic extremes. The cast of Bad Shabbos boasts a number of talented actors, including Kyra Sedgwick and Jon Bass. The movie has received positive feedback for its hilarious script, talented cast, and fun, collaborative set atmosphere.

Set in the well-heeled part of New York’s Upper West Side Jewish community, Tribeca Festival audience award winner “Bad Shabbos” is an entertaining, fast-paced comedy about a Sabbath dinner gone terribly awry. After four previous indie features, director Daniel Robbins should score wider distribution with this tender look at several generations of modern Jews trying to balance the polarities of secular and religious lives, along with the dilemma of a dead body in the bathroom. Robbins and his longtime co-writer Zack Weiner up the comedy ante by stirring in several dysfunctional family dramas, an inter-faith culture clash and an intrepid doorman. A strong ensemble cast nails the tasty dialogue and increasingly frantic action without falling into shtick.

Unlike their golden run on the big screen till phase 3, Marvel didn’t quite replicate its huge success on the small screen, with most of the Disney Plus MCU shows earning less-than-stellar reception. While fans have complained about MCU’s recent catalog being bloated following the abundance of TV shows, Marvel has also abandoned an overwhelming number of TV shows over the years.
This involves several renowned superheroes, including a Captain Britain show, which was greenlit long before the rise of Disney Plus and MCU TV shows.

Milana Vayntrub, the actress behind the popular AT&T commercial character Lily, has opened up about facing online sexual harassment and how she received support from fellow commercial star Stephanie Courtney, aka Flo from Progressive. In a new profile from the New York Times, Vayntrub recalled how she first auditioned for the character of Lily, an upbeat AT&T employee, when she was 26 years old and “dressed like I imagined a friendly girl would dress.” She became the face of the telecommunications company between 2013 and 2016 before taking a hiatus. However, she revived the character in 2020 during the pandemic, which she revealed was her own idea. “This time, Lily would be working from home. AT&T greenlit the proposal. Vayntrub directed the spots herself. She filmed the national ads in her own house, recreating Lily’s hair and makeup herself under the remote supervision of a professional,” the Times profile states. But after returning to the limelight,...

Milana Vayntrub has spoken out before about the online harassment she has faced for her portrayal of “Lily Adams,” a store manager in AT&T ads.
But in a New York Times story today, she revealed she received encouragement and support from an unlikely peer – Stephanie Courtney, who plays the character “Flo” in ads for Progressive Insurance.
Courtney contacted Vayntrub by phone when the online abuse was at its worse. Courtney was empathetic, and Vayntrub recalled that Courtney was a good listener. Talking to her peer made Vayntrub feel “like there were people on my team,” she said in the Times story.
In August of 2020, Vayntrub posted an Instagram livestream asking that the online harassment against her stop.
Vayntrub emotionally discussed how old photos of her have been manipulated into memes that generate lewd and vile responses.

If you don’t know the actor Milana Vayntrub by name, then chances are high that you would recognize her face. Since 2013, Vayntrub has been the on-and-off again star of many AT&T commercials as the character Lily, a jolly AT&T employee who has comedic interactions with customers. Vayntrub’s Lily was the face of a national AT&T campaign for three years before she took a hiatus and revived the character in 2020 for a series of pandemic-themed commercials.
Vayntrub is the subject of a new profile from The New York Times, in which she reflects on the highs and lows of her tenure playing Lily. “The Drew Barrymore Show” returned from its summer hiatus Monday and all hell broke loose.
The WGA picketed Barrymore’s daytime talk show, which employed three WGA members prior to the strike. The program joins the ranks of ABC’s “The View,” which also returned. “The Talk,” “The Jennifer Hudson Show,” and “The Kelly Clarkson Show” have all announced their intention to return before the strike ends; they can expect the same treatment.
All daytime talk shows are not created equally as far as the WGA is concerned. “Tamron Hall,” “Live with Kelly and Mark,” and “Sherri” don’t employ WGA writers and should have cleaner comebacks. Of course, they still can’t have actor or writer guests promoting their films or TV shows. (SAG-AFTRA has been on strike since July 14; the WGA strike started May 2.)

Die Hart: The Movie is a comedy movie directed by Eric Appel
Kevin Hart pokes fun at his supporting role in action movies and signs up for an action actor’s school with John Travolta as his instructor.
Funny… but only just
And if we were worse people we’d say it’s almost close to a B-movie that doesn’t deserve its stars.
With John Travolta, Nathalie Emmanuel, Josh Hartnett and Jean Reno.
Movie Review
A film that looks promising but disappoints you very quickly.
It barely holds up for the first ten or fifteen minutes, when Hart is interviewed. Then, it becomes not much or even just nothing at all, an anecdotal film, video-club fodder in bygone times, one of those movies that no one had heard of and that were rented without thinking too much about it and from which little was expected anyway.
Other than someone learning what Chrome Keying is…...

Hollywood has been trying to bring video games to the big screen since the mid-'90s and, admittedly, the results have been mixed. Sure, we've had franchises like "Resident Evil" pretty consistently do well at the box office, but what's been missing for most of that time is honest-to-God critical acclaim. But the tide has been turning in recent years with movies like "Sonic the Hedgehog" and "Detective Pikachu." However, the tide turned dramatically in terms of acclaim in 2021 with the release of "Werewolves Within."
Based on the Ubisoft and Red Storm Entertainment Oculus game of the same name, director Josh Ruben's low-budget werewolf flick currently boasts a stellar 86 approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That makes it far and away the best-reviewed video game movie ever. So, how did Ruben do what nobody else could with a mere 6.5 million budget? I had the chance to speak with Ruben recently...

Over the course of "She-Hulk: Attorney At Law," True Believers have been introduced to a number of interesting, obscure, and unforgettable characters. We have yet to meet Frog Man at this point in the show, but appearances from the Wrecking Crew, Titania, and Madisynn King (with Wongers) have certainly held us over until that day finally arrives. However, in the latest episode of the Disney+ series from Jessica Gao, the show makes the deepest cut to date and pulls out one of the most obtuse characters in all of the Marvel Universe and utilizes him in an absolutely hilarious way.

The first half was competitive; the second half had no Hollywood ending for the team from La La Land. Thursday’s National Football League regular-season opener saw the defending Super Bowl Champions the Los Angeles Rams fall to the visiting Buffalo Bills 31-10. As a result, NBC and Peacock’s Total Audience Delivery (Tad) also fell — hard — from the comparable 2021 NFL Kickoff Game.
NBC and Peacock registered a projected Tad of “21-plus” million viewers across NBC TV, Peacock, and NFL Digital platforms, based on preliminary data shared by NBC Sports (tweet is below). Last year’s game — a thriller that saw Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the so-called America’s Team, the Dallas Cowboys, 31-20 — scored 26 million viewers. That was the best delivery for an NFL Kickoff Game since 2015 (27.4 million viewers for the Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New England Patriots), and rose 20 percent from 2020’s Houston Texans vs.

In Comedy Central’s upcoming movie “Out of Office,” Ken Jeong and Leslie Jones star as a dysfunctional couple whose marriage increasingly unravels during work-from-home. And in a sneak peek scene, shared exclusively with TheWrap, the two characters go at it in a hilarious Nsfw rage so all-encompassing that they forget the existence of several coworkers listening in via Zoom.
The minute-long clip opens with Jones’ character chucking a dirty porcelain plate at Jeong’s head: “If one of those shards of glass ends back up in my underwear drawer, I’m gonna take it and cut off your dick.”
While the eyebrow-raising threat elicits gasps and gapes from Kyle’s (Jeong) employees, he doesn’t lose a beat in answering, “That might be difficult, given your newfound allergy to dick.” In response, his wife hits back, “Your dick, Kyle. Your dick.” And the insults keep flying (watch the clip...

Shaun of the Dead famously launched with the tagline “Zom, Rom, Com”, as in “zombies”, “romance” and “comedy”. It is fair to say, that is a tough combination to get right, and Shaun of the Dead naturally nailed it.
Werewolves Within takes these themes, adding a dash of small-town Americana charm and running with them. There is a healthy chunk of “Slither” (criminally overlooked) and a little bit of The Thing style paranoia, as a scientist gets drunk as a natural reaction to what her “science stuff” has told her about the recent, grizzly deaths. Our film kicks off, with our instantly lovable Finn (Sam Richardson) heading to a small town, “Beaverfield”, shortly before a blizzard hits, to start his new job as the park ranger.

Photo: ‘Werewolves Within’ ‘Werewolves Within’ directed by Josh Ruben is a horror/comedy about a forest ranger Finn (Sam Richardson) arriving in a small town where he meets postal worker Cecily (Milana Vayntrub). When a snowstorm arrives trapping the town’s residents, they must keep the peace between the residents while uncovering the truth about the mysterious beast terrorizing the town. What this movie shines at is subverting stereotypes which helps keep the mystery going in the movie. Without giving away spoilers, Finn the forest ranger is a black man who is a doormat. He doesn’t know how to stand up for himself. His character subverts the stereotype of the aggressive or strong black man in movies. It’s rare when we get to see black men in the media who start their character arc as not knowing how to stand up for themselves. Related article: Exclusive: 'Dune' Full Commentary,...
