It’s Halloween and the highest-selling comics author of the decade, including the biggest horror title in the business, is going to stay in his Brooklyn apartment and watch some movies.
Oh, sure, there may be some friends over, but James Tynion IV is trying to keep it low-key, with 1980s flicks The Monster Squad, Return of the Living Dead, and Re-Animator on the home marquee. The author is still recovering from New York Comic-Con, where he and his eight-person company, Tiny Onion, which is backed by Lyrical Media, had a major presence. He is the rare comic author that has books across all the major publishers save Marvel, almost all creator-owned. There’s also a Substack newsletter. And a fledgling media division that seeks to catapult those books into various mediums.
Tynion made his name writing Batman for DC, striking out on his own while the proverbial iron was hot.

Well, it's official — Netflix's live-action remake of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" paid off (for the company at least). Avatar Aang (Gordon Cormier) will get to continue mastering the elements, now that "Avatar" has been renewed for seasons 2 and 3.
"Avatar" is just the latest anime that Netflix has brought to live-action. On this spectrum, "Avatar" falls below the well-received "One Piece" remake but ahead of the swiftly-canned live-action "Cowboy Bebop" (that even original series creator Shinichirō Watanabe couldn't finish).
Netflix hasn't stopped there. The streamer is letting "Stranger Things" creators the Duffer Brothers take a crack at "Death Note" and has had a live-action "Gundam" movie in development since 2021. Other studios are getting into anime properties as well: Lionsgate has recruited "Shang-Chi" director Destin Daniel Cretton to adapt "Naruto" into a live-action movie.

Netflix may not have a big superhero franchise, but they are absolutely in the comic book adaptation business. To that end, the streaming service is currently developing a TV show based on the best-selling Boom! Studios comic "Something Is Killing The Children." The series, which comes from writer James Tynion IV ("Batman") and artist Werther Dell'Edera ("Punisher War Journal") has been met with widespread acclaim, as well as massive sales numbers rarely seen outside of Marvel and DC Comics. That being the case, it's the perfect title to become a big streaming series.
The book was originally published in 2019 and was nominated for an Eisner, ultimately paving the way for the series to become an ongoing title, rather than the five-issue miniseries it was originally intended as. Boom! has also since published a spin-off titled "House of Slaughter," which also saw huge sales upon release. That being the case, there...

Something Is Killing the Children, the popular comic by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’edera published by Boom! Studios, is getting another shot at an adaptation from Netflix.
Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, the German creators of buzzy cult series Dark and 1899, have been tapped to develop a series adaptation of the comic, one of the biggest titles being published outside DC and Marvel.
The project is the first to come out the duo’s freshly-renewed first look deal with the streaming giant. That deal is a multi-year overall deal that is said to be in the eight figures.
Bo Odar and Friese will write, showrun and executive produce should the project get the greenlight. They will also direct the pilot. Boom!’s Stephen Christy and Ross Richie will executive produce the adaptation. Tynion and Dell’Edera will co-executive produce.

Last month, the Netflix streaming service announced that they were cancelling the epic mystery horror series 1899 – which came from the minds of Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, creators of the sci-fi thriller series Dark – after just one season. But Friese and bo Odar have an exclusive multiple-year overall deal with Netflix, and they’re not ready to part company just yet. Deadline reports that Friese and bo Odar are now developing a series adaptation of the Boom! Studios comic book Something Is Killing the Children for Netflix.
Created by James Tynion and Werther Dell’Edera, Something Is Killing the Children is one of the most successful original English-language comic series of the last five years. A spin-off series called House of Slaughter has also been a huge hit. Something Is Killing the Children tells the following story: When the children of Archer’s Peak begin to go missing, everything seems hopeless.

A series adaptation of James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera’s comic book series Something Is Killing the Children, is on the way from Netflix, Deadline reports this afternoon.
“Dark” creators Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese are at the helm of the “Something Is Killing the Children” small screen adaptation from Netflix and Boom! Studios.
“The series alights on a small town plagued by monsters that eat children and reveals a mysterious young woman who has the special powers to combat the creatures.”
“When the children of Archer’s Peak begin to go missing, everything seems hopeless. Most children never return, but the ones that do have terrible stories—impossible stories of terrifying creatures that live in the shadows. Their only hope of finding and eliminating the threat is the arrival of a mysterious stranger, one who believes the children and claims to see what they can see. Her name is Erica Slaughter.

Another Netflix series is no more, as we’ve learned that the brand new horror series “1899” – which just premiered back in November – has already been axed after a single season.
The horror-mystery series was from the creators of Netflix’s “Dark,” billed as a “visually stunning Odyssee where nothing is as it seems” and starring Emily Beecham.
In Netflix’s “1899,” “On their journey across the vast and treacherous Atlantic Ocean, the passengers of the Kerberos encounter the biggest mystery of their lives.”
Joe Lipsett wrote in his 4-star review for Bd, “1899 is a polished, compelling period mystery. There’s plenty of intrigue wrapped up in the events of the disappearing ship, as well as the diverse cast of characters whose futures become intertwined in its reappearance.” Joe also raved in his review, “There’s nothing else quite like 1899 on TV right now.”

Netflix has put an end to the mystery series "1899" after just one season. The twisty series' co-creator Baran Bo Odar took to Instagram today to share the news, posting, "With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed."
Odar co-created the series with Jantje Friese, and the pair previously worked together on the streamer's hit German-language series "Dark." Although "1899" hasn't been quite as loudly buzzed-about as "Dark" since its premiere in November, the eight-episode first season still garnered mostly positive reviews from critics and even took the second spot in Netflix's Top 10 upon its release, per Variety. Apparently, though, the noteworthy viewership and narrative intrigue weren't enough to convince the company to renew the series about the strange happenings aboard and around the steamship Kerberos.

Netflix’s “1899” is behind a new record-high demand for German content around the globe in November, according to Parrot Analytics‘ data, which takes into account consumer research, streaming, downloads and social media, among other engagement.
It has been about two years since Netflix’s first German-language original series, “Dark,” helped drive higher demand for German content around the world. By the time the third and final season of the show premiered at the end of June 2020, total global demand for shows from Germany was more than three times what it had been in January 2019. However, in the two years since the finale of “Dark,” global demand for German content has largely stagnated without seeing the clear gains of previous years. A recent upward trend could signal that demand for German content around the world is making gains again.

If you’re a fan of TV shows that require a lot of work, 1899 is for you. The new series, a German-produced word-of-mouth hit that features 11 different languages, is easily the most complex series out there right now. It follows migrants aboard an ocean liner who come across an alarming discovery while on the high seas: another ship that went missing days before. So far, so simple.
It’s when a few of these characters decide to explore the boat, though, that things take a mind-bending turn. Let’s just say, watching with a pen and notepad close at hand is advised. It’s a show designed to confound and, for those with a predilection for mystery layered upon mystery, it will lure you in hook, line and sinker. But there’s just one problem: the show is on Netflix.
In fairness, the streaming service was very kind to Dark,...

It’s a show designed to confound and, for those with a predilection for mystery layered upon mystery, it will lure you in hook, line and sinker. But there’s just one problem: the show is on Netflix.

Netflix’s newest mystery series 1899 has already stumped viewers with its eight-episode premiere season, as many have found it to be reminiscent of the thriller show, Dark.
Released on 17 November, 1899 is the latest to come from German filmmakers and real-life couple Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, following their first TV project, Dark, which ran for three seasons.
Warning, potential spoilers to follow
1899 follows a steamship, carrying immigrants from London to New York, whose passengers become entangled in a mysterious riddle after they discover a second vessel adrift at sea.
With similar fixings to bo Odar and Friese’s previous programme, which included an intricate puzzle of characters uniquely intertwined, viewers are convinced the two shows are somehow connected.
“Okay so Dark started with a missing kid and 1899 started with a kid being found,” one user wrote on Twitter, alongside the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia conspiracy meme.

Netflix users might struggle to understand a new series unless they change a particular setting.
Earlier this month, a new series titled 1899 was released on the streaming sevice, a thrillingly baffling series that you should probably be wary of getting too attached to.
The show follows an international cast of characters forced to work out a hellish riddle after discovering a missing ship while on the open sea.
Created by Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, the duo behind the acclaimed German series Dark, the show is notable for featuring several different languages, ranging from Spanish and French to Cantonese.
Due to the subtitles, some viewers might have decided to watch with the audio dubbed into English – however, be warned: this might make the already complex series far more confusing.
Those who have enjoyed 1899’s twists and turns with the subtitles are warning people against watching with the dub function,...

[Editor’s Note: The following interview contains spoilers for “1899″ Season 1.]
There’s a point in the first episode of “1899” when two characters are introduced in a very particular way. As the boarding party from the giant steamship Kerberos returns back to deck with news from the nearby, abandoned Prometheus, they carry a young boy (Fflyn Edwards) with them. Meanwhile, closer to the ship’s hold, a mysterious figure Daniel (Aneurin Barnard) climbs on board, soaked wet from his own journey to get there.
For anyone who’s seen writer Jantje Friese and director Baran bo Odar’s previous series “Dark,” it might as well be a neon sign. And Friese and bo Odar know exactly how they’re using it.
“There are a lot of people who watched ‘Dark’ who are used to the way that we code things and how we hide things. We had lots of readers on the scripts already saying, ‘Okay, so Daniel is actually The Boy.
