The Magnolia Pictures-Participant Media documentary Rbg already has lured crowds with targeted buyout screenings and looks ready for a strong debut as it begins its regular run in theaters this weekend. Julie Cohen and Betsy West’s Sundance premiere about U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is opening Friday in nearly three dozen locations, ready to peel off some audiences looking for an alternative to the second weekend of Avengers: Infinity War and other big holdovers. New limited releases this weekend also include foreign-language fare. Music Box Films is opening The Guardians, a drama starring Nathalie Baye from French filmmaker Xavier Beauvois that begins its stateside run with an exclusive showing in New York this weekend before heading to select markets. And KimStim is opening Vivian Qu’s Angels Wear White at New York’s Metrograph before heading to other cities. The film was the only feature...

Jean Denizot‘s feature debut La Belle Vie will have it’s world premiere at this year’s Venice Film Festival, which runs from 28 August 28th to 7 September 7th. Today, we’re here to share the first image and to give you the most important details from the film which is based on a true story that shocked France. We definitely recommend you to take a look. Derniere Seance (Last Screening)
Directed by Laurent Achard
Screenplay by Laurent Achard and Frédérique Moreau
2011, France
If Last Screening’s greatest flaw is the silliness of its premise, it’s greatest success is director Laurent Achard unflaggingly earnest commitment to that premise. It won’t be spoiled in this review, but it may have something to do with a series of one-eared female corpses. And maybe with cinema. And it definitely has something to do with the troubled, introvert of a cinema projectionist who is responsible for said corpses.
Sylvain (Pascal Cervo) manages a classic Parisian cinema and screens the French Can Can daily to anywhere between one and three patrons. Naturally, it’s not a profitable venture and the owner arranges for the cinema to be sold and reconfigured. Sylvain proves more than just resistant to the idea–he is in complete denial and continues to arrange screenings well after the scheduled close.
