Goodnight Burbank, the critically acclaimed original web series all about awkward workplace chemistry of the cast and crew at a Southern California local area news network, just joined the likes of Childrens’ Hospital, Sanctuary, and In the Motherhood in the pantheon of web shows picked up by TV. Hopefully it will fare more like the former on its new medium than the latter. Mark Cuban’s HDNet acquired the rights to Goodnight Burbank creator and star Hayden Black’s fourth and most recent 30-minute iteration of the five-year-old online original. Lacey Rose at The Hollywood Reporter broke the news and notes the deal came to be after Cuban reached out to Black via Facebook message. The cable television channel will broadcast Goodnight Burbank's season one in full beginning October 12. Until then, you can still catch the episodes on Hulu. This isn’t Cuban’s nor HDNet’s first foray...

Hayden Black is a one man powerhouse in the world of New Media web series. Hayden Black first channeled a local area news anchor with career ambitions far beyond reporting on your local area Chuck E. Cheese’s way back in 2006. Gordon Winston-Smythe, Black’s Manchester-born news man trying to make it in a city that’s not quite Los Angeles, is one of just two major components of the web series Goodnight Burbank that haven’t changed in the past five years. The other is the sereis’ premise. The show is still about all the awkward workplace hijinks that take place in, around, and about the newsroom before, during, and after daily news broadcasts. And the focus is still on the back and forth banter between the anchors, who compete for attention from the camera and affections from their crew. But the other major components of the series (namely the cast, the length of the episodes, and the distribution platform) have changed. Today, Goodnight Burbank...

Babelgum has been on a web series roundup of late, and these guys are moving fast. With news coming just two weeks ago of indie sci-fi series The Crew jumping ship to the online network as its news home for season 2, a fresh new batch of sci-fi series have followed suit. Today Babelgum announced three new original series, several of which are helmed by some web series notables, to make up the bulk of the sci-fi/horror comedy channel. Launching today is a new series from Goodnight Burbank creator Hayden Black—no not The Cabonauts, which we're still waiting on—but a hastily assembled paranormal comedy The Occulterers. The "interactive comedy and horror series" stars Black as one of his inventive characters, Hervé Villechez, this time part of a four-person Transylvanian ghost hunting crew. Black's new series took just two weeks from concept to production, and that includes inking the deal with Babelgum.

What happens when a divorcee "acquires" her ex-husband's marketing research company and asks her best friend, a beauty editor-turned-bestselling author, to help her run it? On the surface, it seems almost plausible. But when those two best friends are Cynthia and Pillar, two of the most self-obsessed women in the San Fernando Valley area, then things get interesting…and often hilarious. Especially when you bring in actors such as David H. Lawrence (Heroes, Goodnight Burbank) and Sandeep Parikh (The Guild, co-creator-director The Legend of Neil) to play some of the crazy cast of characters that participate in the focus groups for the horrible products that result from this "acquisition". Groupthink was created by two former cast members of Goodnight Burbank, so the writing-directing-producing-acting team of Angela Espinosa and Wendy Rosoff have a lot of web series experience to bring to the table. I had the pleasure of sitting down and...

More news on the casting front for Hayden Black's sci-fi musical romp The Cabonauts. Longtime Star Trek star Nichelle Nichols will be joining the cast as a series regular. Known largely for her role as Lt./Cmdr. Uhura in both the original TV series and follow-up film versions, Nichols is also quite the singer. This should come in handy in the series, which is set in an intergalactic space taxi in what Black and crew are promising to be a full-on "singing and dancing" musical. Nichols is slated to be in every episode joining fellow singing cast members Black, Norm Thoeming and Monica Young. The first of three behind-the-scenes interviews with Nichols is posted on The Cabonauts site: Possibly Related News:‘Cabonauts’, Hayden Black’s Musical Sci-Fi Romp Locks Dailymotion‘Goodnight Burbank’ Spins ‘Hollywood’, Shacks Up With BabelgumEd Asner Signs on for Crackle’s Racy David Faustino ‘Star-ving’ Series...

Babelgum has been stepping further into the web television waters lately, adding two notable comedy web series to its catalog in a distribution deal for A.D. Miles' comedy Horrible People and Fun Little Movies' dating comedy Turbo Dates. This comes fresh off the heels of the site's recent signing of Hayden Black's Goodnight Burbank for a fresh 20-episode run. Either way, Babelgum and Fun Little Movies sound like they are going to be teamed up for a while. Turbo Dates has already shot a second season, Chindamo tells us, with guest stars including Elisa Donovan of Clueless, Len Lesser of Seinfeld, Todd Grinnell of Desperate Housewives amongst others. Babelgum is said to be "very interested in licensing those new episodes." Flm also has a 22-episode series called Mr. Wrong that it is planning on releasing via Bablegum as well. Well it's official, in case you haven't noticed, sci-fi is hot right now. Rumors had been flying around town about Goodnight Burbank and Abigail's Teen Diary creator Hayden Black's new upcoming musical comedy sci-fi series, The Cabonauts. Set in an intergalactic space taxi cab, episodes will feature various characters busting out into original song while on their cosmic trips. Numerous celebrities are expected to be in the series including some sci-fi staples— Star Trek (its various incarnations), Buffy, Alien Nation, Buck Rogers and Dr. Who. The 15-episode first season is said to be quite a sizable production, exceeding that of last summer's indie runaway musical hit Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. Helping to offset that of course will be an exclusive deal with Dailymotion, which will release the series exclusively on site for the first month of each new episode.

Goodnight Burbank is back. The popular long-standing faux news web series from creator Hayden Black has been releasing 20 new episodes under a slight spinoff dubbed Goodnight Burbank: Hollywood Report. The only problem is, unless you're hanging out at Babelgum on a regular basis, you might have missed it. In fact, you can't even watch it on the show's own well developed site. There's nothing wrong with exclusive distribution deals, in fact there's a growing belief that in fact may be the only way to secure maximum value for video content. The Guild's recent renewal of its exclusive deal with Microsoft which locked it up on its triumverate platform - MSN, XBox and Zune.
