Jon Drever’s charming and funny 2009 accidental-superhero short gets the full-length treatment
Adapted from writer/director Jon Drever’s terrifically cute and pithy 2009 short film of the same name, this uneven but gently amusing expansion follows meteorically transformed Bob Kenner as he spends his day off on the streets of Peckham (“people say it’s a bit stabby”) and clocks in at the MoD, where his invincible flying powers are in bureaucratic demand. An inventively witty low-budget British riposte to Hancock, SuperBob doesn’t quite negotiate some of its tonal shifts between mock-doc rom-com and traffic-accident tragedy, but co-writer and star Brett Goldstein holds it all together very amiably, while Catherine Tate, Natalia Tena and Ruth Sheen provide solidly entertaining support.

Following a character with supernatural powers living out an ordinary, monotonous life was the running theme – and overriding joke – in the deadpan, New Zealand comedy What We Do in the Shadows. Now we have Britain’s answer, with Jon Drever SuperBob, also presented in the mockumentary format. To be comparable to one of

Britain's first superhero heads to the screen - and SuperBob is an absolute treat. Here's our review...
It could hardly be said that the British film industry has been matching the current rate of production of American superhero movies. A Bananaman movie has been in the works for a couple of years, but until Marvel decides to greenlight a Captain Britain movie, the domain of caped crusaders and comic book action largely belongs to Hollywood.
It's therefore quite fitting that SuperBob is about Britain's first superhero, because it's functionally Britain's first superhero film, at least since Marvel Studios got going. While Marvel diversifies its films by setting them in different genres and is about to start turning out three movies a year with that model, even they haven't thought to make a low-budget romantic comedy yet.
That idea comes instead from director Jon Drever, who adapts his...

From “Condorman” to “Hancock,” from “Blankman” to “My Super Ex-Girlfriend,” the history of the superhero comedy is a less than illustrious one. Sure, the Marvel movies are pretty funny, but it’s surprising given the dominance of the comic book hero at the box office right now, that we haven’t seen more successful comic riffs on the underwear-over-tights genre. But one might have finally arrived. “SuperBob,” from director Jon Drever, hits cinemas in the U.K. in a few weeks, and it’s being billed by some as a sort of superheroic “Shaun Of The Dead.” Co-written by and starring “Derek” breakout Brett Goldstein, with “Doctor Who” and “The Office” star Catherine Tate, “Game Of Thrones” actress Natalia Tena, Laura Haddock from “Guardians Of The Galaxy,” and David Harewood from “Homeland,” among various familiar faces in support, the film focuses on the titular superhero, the only one in the world,...

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a trailer for one of the year’s most unexpected delights – the British superhero comedy, Superbob. Click below to take a look.We know what you’re thinking. But fear not – Jon Drever and Brett Goldstein’s movie avoids all the pitfalls that a low-budget superhero comedy can fall into, opting instead for a touching, often hilarious day-in-the-life of the world’s only superhero, Bob Kenner (Goldstein, who also co-wrote), a postman from Peckham whose life is forever transformed when he’s struck by a meteorite. The film tracks him through his day off, as Bob tries to go on a date while avoiding pressure from his bosses at the Ministry of Defence. Trust us on this – the entire budget of Superbob probably wouldn’t cover the Avengers’ catering, but Superbob is a warm, funny, touching treat. Check out...
